Unsellable Houses Season 3 Episode 8 - Colorfully Crafted - 5/31/22
The house was built in 2002 and is in good shape in fact personally I think it is in move in condition except that it has the beige walls, beige carpet, beige tile, and honey oak cabinets that are the typical finishes of the time. Everything is clean and the carpet and paint is in good condition.
The budget is $50,000.
So what needs to be done? Update the finishes.
New vinyl plank flooring through out the house.
Paint the kitchen cabinets a medium sage green with a pink tile backsplash. Yes, PINK is the new millennial neutral. It is a pale blush and it looks good.
New stainless steel kitchen appliance package.
Paint all the walls.
Update the lighting.
Update the tile on the fireplace.
Hall bathroom, painted the old honey old vanity but new counters, sink, faucets, tile floor, not sure about the bathtub they did not show it.
Master bedroom, updated semi custom master closet, and updated master bathroom, new floors, new modern vanity, mirror, lights and absolutely wonderful updated tile shower.
Updating the finishes totally transforms this house. The little touches of green and pink in the staging furniture mirror the green fireplace mantle, and kitchen cabinets. That touch of color is enough, the ladies did know not to go over board with it.
I noticed all the door handles and hinges and closet door pulls were black. Very consistent through the house.
Unsellable Price: $475,000 New List Price: $575,000 Sell Price: $675,000

Windy City Rehab Season 3 Episode 7 - From Greece to the Gold Coast - June 2, 2022
The Alison Victoria Redemption series continues.
Wow, I wish I had millionaire friends who are wine importers who hire me to help design their condo penthouses with a million dollar budget and want to make a signature wine for me. For as much as Alison complains about money she does fly to Atlanta, Paris, and Greece a lot. I shrieked when I filled up my car's gas tank this week and had to pay 54 dollars.
Alison seems to be everywhere on HGTV this year, with her own series, with hosting this year's Dream House, with being on Battle on the Beach, judging on Rock the Block. I am amazed she has time for her IVF treatments to get her eggs frozen. Seriously the woman will be 80 before she slows down and has time to raise a child. Also does she have a professional photographer follow her everywhere for all the posts on her Instagram page. When does she have time in the day to even have that glass of signature wine?
This weeks project seemed a bit bland but Alison and the other designer were designing to the clients taste. The renovation of a condo that is an entire floor is amazing. Thankfully, Alison and the other designer were able to convince the client, Ted, to make some better choices in the countertops and with the sconces. While we saw the finished product with the owners furniture I cannot picture that space without some kind of window treatments. Some curtains would have warmed up the space.

Windy City Rehab - it's starting to get like Christina on the Coast, way too much personal stuff and not enough renovations/design. I mean, yay for you if you're able to jet around and have someone design a signature wine, but I'd rather watch tiles and colors being chosen. Renovations being done.
The condo/apartment was okay, overall it seemed kind of cold and the kitchen just looked all beige to me. Not my favorite, but I guess millionaire wine guy liked it. Meh.

Battle on the Beach Season 2 Episode 1 - Clash of the Kitchens - June 5, 2022
For some reason I am not impressed with the three new teams or their designs. Renovation TV burnout? Don't know.
Looks as if the judges for the season will be Bryan and Sarah Baeumler from Renovation Island. Bryan looks great as if he has lost about 30 to 40 pounds. He looked great before just fitter now. Sarah is more relaxed and her voice is not as high pitched as it normally sounds.
Ty - frustrated with his team (the male and female business partners), they installed a pine wood ceiling then painted it white. So what was the point of doing all of the install work? Liked the green cabinets. Didn't like the floating shelves, seem an afterthought.
Tanyia - (father and son) - she is the one that convinced them to do the banquet seating and they messed up the butcherblock countertops and the too large table. It was nice to see something other then the standard L shaped kitchen with an island.
Alison - (Canadian realtors and flippers, husband and wife) - that kitchen looked like a cheap copy of Egypt's kitchen from season 2 of Rock the Block. Bryan wondered why they nailed the shiplap. You are supposed to nail shiplap on it's lip or groove that is then covered by the next strip of shiplap.

Part of being underwhelmed was that first contest stipulating once you bought an item only you could use it. My main pet peeve was the beverage/wine refrigerators. This property will be either be a vacation house, a rental property, or both. If there are groups of people or extended family it makes sense to have a wine or beverage refrigerator one for adults, one for kids.

Ever notice on the majority of house renovations they never address crappy driveways that have cracks, holes, and oil stains. It is not that expensive getting a new asphalt driveway, seal an old one, or put a skim coat on a concrete one.
It drives me crazy when I see flippers spending $100,000 on the interiors but do not address the exterior of a home, the landscaping, the exterior lighting, or the driveway.

Unsellable Houses - Timeless Elegance - June 7, 2022
I would not buy this house as it seemed so boxy.
Hated they did not fix the outside at all especially the cracked driveway.
At the beginning of the episode it seemed very strange to hear them budget $24,000 for a kitchen that all they were going to do was change the countertops, and paint the cabinets, new backsplash and maybe new appliances. It made no sense. Later they decided on new cabinets that made sense. However for such a small kitchen that stilled seemed pricey.
These homeowners thought it would be Ok to sell a house that had no sink in the powder room. They simply had not installed a new one. They thought that was OK? What world people are you living in?
The biggest surprise was how new finishes can totally transform a home. New floors, fresh paint on every surface, new cabinets in the kitchen and bathroom, new tile, slight configuration change in the kitchen and new furniture for staging the house went from ugly brown 1970's to fresh, light, feeling like a airy cottage instead of a teardown.

Bargain Block is back for season 2
Instead of 30 minute episodes featuring 2 homes the episode is now 60 minutes long still featuring 2 homes.
Luv seeing that Keith and Evan have expanded their design business "Ninth" into a new location that includes a workshop and warehouse for their thrift finds.
Keith and Evan are still living in one of the homes they renovated last season.
Again two amazing transformations, one home they purchased for $1000 the other for $7000. Both homes were uses as dumps for trash. Keith and Evan stated that Detroit has free garbage service so it never makes any sense for people to dump their trash in abandoned homes.
The boys do minimal landscaping for the homes their renovate however the second home looked as if the yard was still messed up from having the dumpster parked in the front yard during the renovation. The one property also had a garage but nothing was done to update it, even painting the garage door a deep teal like the new front door on the house would have been an improvement.
I am however totally amazed how Keith and Evan can rebuild these homes for $80,000 when they look like total teardowns.

I really liked the "Hamptons" house they did on Bargain Block, so pretty. The teal walls and gold ceiling on the "Gatsby" house was a bit much for me, but the kitchen was nice. Didn't love the penny tile in the shower, though. I'm sure the neighborhood is happy those eyesores are fixed up! No Demo Reno is coming back on June 23rd, I believe.

Bargain Block Season 2 Episode 2 - The Hamptons and Gatsby - June 8, 2022I do like that Keith goes full out on color. I don't know if I would like living with that much color but it is fun to watch. I could see doing one room in the house that way, like an office or powder room. I have seen some really nice rooms done with one solid color but they had really high ceilings and fabulous moldings on the wall. Keith and Evan are a gift to that area, and to be able to renovate and provide a furnished home at that price is incredible. Yeah, to No Demo Reno, that show just gives me ideas for my house.

Windy City Rehab Season 3 Episode 8 - Surburban Stunner - June 9, 2022
The home is located in 8938 S. Hoyne Ave, the Beverly area in Chicago and built in 1912.
The house was bought for $491,000. Wow that is low.
Renovation budget: $250,000.
Outside, paint the house white, with black accents, and new black windows.
Added arches, found antique pieces to use in the home.
I did like the antiques painted the muted green that Ari then makes them built ins. Thankfully Alison did not paint any pieces black. I do wonder about the hall connecting the kitchen to the rest of the house that these green built ins were placed. Is the house that large they can just use a room as a hallway?
Luv'ed the original staircase hand rail and yes it looked better painted green. Although the little tantrum over the red portions of the stained glass windows was a little much. However we all now know Alison loves green and hates red.
I found this weeks and last weeks homes rather bare, with no art on the walls, and I wonder why?
The episode shoots more like a documentary behind the scenes how was something done, created, solved. You do see Alison paying a lot of attention to details, and you see that interior design in not a fluff job. I did like the one scene when they found out the house was landmarked and they needed to resolve that and that Alison had other jobs lined up and that in construction you need to do things in a certain order or else there is a huge domino effect that affects not just you, but the homeowners, and the trades you have lined up, and potentially other clients.
What kinda shocked me was the master closet and bathroom. You have this huge room for the closet and you only use one wall for the custom closet. It is tiny and the bathroom is this small area. I don't understand why they didn't make the master closet the master bathroom and the master bathroom the walkin closet.
On a second viewing the master closet actually has customer shelving on both walls it's that it is basically not shown except for a tiny peek during the reveal.

Battle on the Beach Season 2 Episode 2 - Main Suite Face-Off - June 12, 2022
Ugh! Have these teams NEVER watched HGTV before, NEVER looked at a magazine? The showers were terrible. The main reason for the terrible showers were the lack of shower heads, hand held wands, and extra shower heads.
Alison's team had a huge wet room shower and bath and they had one hand held wand? What? Why? The arch sucked a bit.
Taniya's team also had a wet room shower and bath, they did have a rain shower, and a hand held wand but again it did not scream luxurious vacation rental. I also wonder about the father of the team. Did he not know what he was signing up for?
Seriously, if you are doing a wet room, have a rain (overhead) shower, have a regular one, maybe two, have at least one hand held wand, maybe two, think about having some body sprays.
Ty's team had a separate shower, bath, and double vanity and it looks like a shower head and hand held wand that made sense in that size shower. This bathroom did seem more complete than the other two.
The reveals show some sloppy painting and incomplete craftsmanship.
Still not impressed with any of the teams.

Battle on the Beach - ugh is right. I thought the baths looked good on the promos until I got a really good look. The tiling on that arch was awful. The father/son team put that huge trough sink in and took away all the counter space. The winning team's vanity was too close to the shower, I'd be bumping into the glass while I did my hair. Maybe it's just me, but I've never taken a bath on vacation. Give me a big fancy shower with body sprays and rain heads, though, and I'm happy.

Bargain Block - that first house was lovely, and they made a decent profit too. I liked the second one until I saw the shiny gold sink and mural on the shower tile. Er...not my thing. But someone liked it, it sold pretty quickly and they made a smaller profit. I might not like all the design choices, but I do enjoy watching the guys transform these junky houses.

Maybe it's just me, but I've never taken a bath on vacation. Give me a big fancy shower with body sprays and rain heads, though, and I'm happy. I watch Vacation House Rules Friday night on HGTV and one thing I have noticed is that in the majority of the renovations Scott will take out a bathtub and replace it with a shower. In fact the majority of the homes, even the ones folks plan to retire to, have showers and no bathtubs. That is why the notion of having a big luxury bathroom in a beach vacation rental makes no sense to me. The entire premise of renovations in a vacation home is more beds more bodies not luxury bathrooms for one couple. If I am on vacation and getting out of the beach or lake I can see having an outdoor shower to rinse off, having a nice steam shower, having body sprays, and relaxing in the hot tub late in the evening after a nice dinner. Even watching Maine Cabin Masters, the entire notion is more beds more bodies not fancy bathrooms. PS: I have noticed in many Canadian homes that are remodeled there is a faucet lower to the ground in shower specifically to rinse feet, what a great idea.

But someone liked it, it sold pretty quickly and they made a smaller profit. I might not like all the design choices, but I do enjoy watching the guys transform these junky houses. I totally agree with you, but their business model is affordable housing with high design. For someone who never had a home or living in section 8 housing the Bargain Block houses are once in a lifetime jewel boxes, fun to live in, and a conversation starter. Starting my career if I could have purchased a home at that price in my 20's I would have it is such an opportunity. Bargain Block Season 2 Episode 3 - French Country and Chez Shea - June 15, 2022 I luv'ed the kitchen in House Shea, the one with the gold sink. The gold sink was a bit much but Keith and Evan understand their target audience and I liked the "Coming to America" reference that Shea's husband Terry made. Too true. While not a huge green fan I liked the paint color on Chez Shea, but was it really necessary to paint brand new vinyl siding? Luv'ed the green kitchen cabinets. That was an adorable kitchen and well laid out. During the initial walkout at first glance everything looked OK until the camera closeups and you saw the sloppy workmanship on the cabinets, the backsplash, the electrical outlets. They let people sell homes in Detroit without heat/furnace? Don't homes need certificates of occupancy to say they are livable? The French Country house looked adorable on the outside. I do assume that none of these homes have air conditioning.

Unsellable Houses Season 3 Episode 10 - Old Ranch to New Nest - June 14, 2022
I do like the changes the ladies made to this home; again paint and new finishes and new lighting can transform a home.
The converted garage into den/laundry room/workout room, the vaulted cedar ceiling was left alone everything else was painted white. However the texture of the concrete bricks from the old garage wall, the brick from the back of the fireplace and the wood paneling add so much depth to the room.
While I like concrete tiles, I don't like the extra maintenance of sealing it. The patterns may not be my favorite the overall look in bathrooms was amazing.
Like absolutely luv'ed the subway tile in the shower stall and bathtub shower combo. Both tiles were blue, one was over large and had a textured surface and looked amazing, as did the other which again was over long and a bit skinny.
I totally appreciated the tile in the foyer by the front door, it is the wet Pacific North, under the washer and dryer, and in the kitchen.
So glad they were able to refinish the floors and really liked that medium to light brown stain they used, the floors looked fabulous.
I always like their staging, the patterns and texture in their fabrics, but must say I felt the ladies over staged the rooms with too many little tchotchkes (a small object that is decorative rather than strictly functional; a trinket.).
Liked painting the pigeon coop from white to the same green as the house and garage.
I was very concerned seeing the ugly square terra cotta tile Lyndsey suggested as the kitchen backsplash. I hate stacked square tiles, and I hate square tile put on a vertical slant. I see too much of it as it was so popular and cheap in the 80's and 90's kitchens and bathrooms, that beige looking tile is everywhere, there fore terra cotta square tile placed to be place in a diamond pattern was a hideous vision. It did look much better finished.

Windy City Rehab Season 3 Episode 9 - Ground Up - June 16, 2022 - Season 3 Finale
When I first started watching Windy City Rehab Alison Victoria came across as intense, focused, angry maybe, a bit narcissist, greedy, after all she always claimed it was about "the money".
Watching her now Alison seems in a much better space, happy in fact.
Alison adores what she does. At times she claims artistic one of kind moments a bit too much that reminds me of blowhards like Trump who claim everything they do is fantastic, amazing, one of a kind that I tend to be leery of that kind of self promoting.
What I did get out of this episode is that Alison loves lighting and there is a ton of it in this home.
Alison is very knowledgeable about home construction and she gets along with the trades.
They showcase a lot of businesses this season and this episode, so you can see there is more then shopping trips to antique malls and Ari's barn. I appreciate that she appreciates the craftsmanship behind the items and finishes she buys.
Luv that Alison shouts out about her design assistant/partner this episode.
It is nice to see everyone working together to get a project done unlike many of these flipping shows where there is a lot of yelling and throwing.
I must admit I wonder about people who live in the houses Alison creates, do they really use all the spaces? Jim, the client in this episode seemed to have an understanding of the pieces Alison found for him and incorporated in this house. I do like the little touches like making sure the stone walk to the house from the sidewalk is heated so there will be no ice. What a great idea. If nothing else both Alison and her assistant narrate the reveal for the client very well. You can tell that Jim the client is very pleased with the finished product. I felt that this home was more complete than the client homes in the last two episodes.

Battle on the Beach Season 2 Episode 3 - Living Room Showdown - June 19, 2022
The teams were given $1000 budget and taken to a nautical antique market to find nautical items to incorporate into their living room builds. The team mentors did say that these items may not fit into the themes there are using but that vacationers will expect them.
Ty's Team purchased teak deck boards and added legs to create side tables and a coffee table, you could tell they were not excited about the challenge.
Tanyia's Team of father and son were also not thrilled to be doing the challenge and bought an old chest, wooden pegs, and an old beam from a boat. The chest and pegs were transformed into a coffee table, big stretch there. Dad totally shutdown Tanyia's idea to attach the pegs on the outside of the chest instead of underneath.
Alison's Team thrived, partly because Alison loves to antique shop and transform pieces on her show. They found two old brass lamps and used them as sconce lights on the fireplace. They looked really good. They found three brass portal holes with the glass. They built a window bench and placed the portal holes on the side so you could see into the bench. This was very creative and very Alison. The last piece they used was something called a day shape which is used on a navigation light.
per wiki
The day shape was a huge cylinder made of black netting hung from the ceiling and had a string of outdoor lights hung inside to create a feature chandelier for the living room.
Paige and Corey, Alison's Team won the living room challenge as this is where they are separating themselves design wise from the other teams. They deleted the side windows as the view was another cottage and created a wall to ceiling fireplace using the same stone as in the kitchen, matching built-in cabinets and shelfs with the same arch as in the kitchen. Overall looking at their kitchen, dining, and living room it looked cohesive and better built and designed them the other two teams.
Ty's Team also did built-ins using the old kitchen cabinets all in white. They continued the white wood ceiling, had a white sofa and two white arm chairs, and added an antique fireplace mantle but no fireplace. Overall it is white, on white, on white, with the only pop of color the green from the kitchen cabinets. Ty used his photography as three art pieces.
Tanyia's Team, the father and son, did an electric fireplace with a floor to ceiling concrete finish which looked nice. They also did wood beams and a decorative sho shugi ban burned wood accent at the top of the ceiling. They incorporated their wine frig in this makeshift rough wood console. Tanyia had them crate a stretcher for a shower curtain to use as a piece of art but the Dad was so against it but that art peice really made the room and created the link between the kitchen and the living room.
Lots of sloppy craftsmanship from all the teams.
Alison's Team won. It really was the best put together.
Both Ty and Alison's teams installed powder rooms but they will not be considered until the final appraisal.

As an avid House Hunters junkie I have a few pet peeves: 1. What is the big deal about double sinks in the bathroom? Nobody has to brush their teeth side by side. If I hear that not having double sinks is a dealbreaker again, I will scream. 2. Those looking for a vintage house but then complain about lack of 'open concept' (another pet peeve) or lack of closet space! Old house were not built like that and if thats what you want you don't want vintage.3. People who tour a newly remodeled house and still want to rip out the kitchen because its not their taste! Such a waste. Just walk away and find a fixer or a kitchen you do like. The term 'total gut job' ARGHHHHHH 4. And the 'ugly Americans' on HHI that complain about room size and other such horrors when looking for a home overseas. Maybe you should stay stateside. I am sure there are more but thats it for now. Still love the show but not always the buyers. That drives me crazy too, they want character and open concept, well then live in a cave.

Battle on the Beach - Alison's team did the best with their nautical stuff, for sure. At least their house looks beachy.
I agree with Ty and his "cauliflower soup" comment. Would it kill those two to add some color? They're annoying.
The dad on Taniya's team is annoying, too. He gets pouty and shuts down at the slightest challenge and doesn't want to listen to anyone else. There are too many shades of wood in their house, and the unfinished wine table thing was awful. Bleah.

He gets pouty and shuts down at the slightest challenge and doesn't want to listen to anyone else. There are too many shades of wood in their house, and the unfinished wine table thing was awful. Bleah. At least the white on white on white color palette allowed the black and white photos Ty added to pop. This couple's design philosophy reminds me of so many of the wives on House Hunters or the renovation shows that are so scared of color that they want all white kitchens, all white counters and backsplashes, an all white house. Right up there with the ones who don't like carpet because there are full of people's discarded skin cells and lets not forget toilets that are used by other people. I fondly remember a British designer who mainly did gardens having a client who had a home with a white or neutral palette but was full of textures, and shades of white and I wanted that home so much because it was visually treat and you could also touch the different textures the entirety was such a Zen moment. However, Ty's Team has not reached this nirvana of excellent. I would have been slightly impressed if they had painted the backboards of the built in the same green they had used for the kitchen cabinets. Or gone even further and painted the entire built in green. That and if the ceiling had been left the raw wood color would have made this the winner or close to it. While there are many people who are not fans of the black and white farmhouse style it can be done well. In fact Alison is a great example of doing broad strokes of material, it is simple but she places it next to another kind of material and the cohesive whole has synergy not like the blah of Ty's Team. Let's get to Tanyia's Team dad ... those wooden pegs. Cutting the tops of them defeated the purpose and expense of buying them as you could have gotten a less expensive pegleg from the hardware store. If he doesn't want to do creative fine. Let the son do it. But then make sure the craftmanship of the other items is spotless. Dad complains about the silly creative stuff taking away from the build, yet the build ain't that great. The attitude of two of the teams is to the point I don't know their individual names or care to learn them. I only know the names of the couple that is Alison's team.

I really wish they'd stop trying to beat this dead horse of Tarek and/or Christina. They have left a bad taste in my mouth for a while, both together and apart. They were never going to be the next Chip & Joanna, no matter how hard HGTV pushed for it.

Bargain Block - loved both of the renos this week. Somehow they ended up getting two more houses side by side - the neighbors were so happy to see them renovated.
And I'm so glad No Demo Reno is back, I love how she changes the rooms without tearing everything up. Plus she gives actual design tips.
