Is this a season that is available on Netflix, or is this an older one that is new to Americans? The three seasons that are on Netflix are the ones that have aired on PBS in the previous years. The one airing on PBS now, is considered season 4 to us but was actually aired in the UK in 2012, I believe. In the UK where the show is called The Great British Bake Off there have been 8 series or seasons that have aired starting in 2010 thru 2017. What is confusing is that PBS did not start the series with season 1 but season 4 (2013 this is when it aired in the UK), then aired season 5 (2014), then aired season 6 (2015), as season 1, 2, and 3 here in the USA. These are the seasons that are on Netflix. What we are now watching on PBS as season 4 in the USA is actually season 3 (2012) from the UK.

Wow! Is this also on you tube for those of us in the States? I actually watched the UK season 1 and 2 on Youtube, not the easiest thing to do but possible.

I am thoroughly enjoying what's currently being shown (Britain's actual Season 3) here in the U.S. I have loved every season and hope we, in the U.S., will eventually be able to see all of the seasons whether they're out of order or not. I've yet to see the new judge and hosts.

I just watched the last episode and I don't think I have ever seen a tougher technical challenge. They had to do a crème caramel … a bit like a crème brulee but the caramel is on the bottom of the ramekin and it has to be turned upside down and the ramekin removed so that the caramel then is on top but not crunchy. I have never seen so many disasters. I think at most three people had a fairly descent one and the rest a mess, including two who didn't get theirs to set. They were a runny mess. The final challenge had them making all different types of meringue cakes. So yummy looking...even the ones the judges weren't keen on.

I guess the Brits ( or maybe just Mary) love meringue. They do a lot of it on this show.

Almost everyone messed up on it. I'm not too keen on the bakers this time around, but I do like the guy that was in trouble last night and was very glad he didn't get sent home. I also like the young kid who got star baker last week, and the girl whose father and brothers make her cook for them.

I noticed that the PBS person who was asking for contributions to the station said that this would be the last season of the Great British Baking Show that would be telecast in the US. I was surprised as I know they are showing a new season in the UK with the new cast (except for Paul Hollywood, who is still around). I saw 4 episodes of the new season on a flight home from the UK and quite enjoyed the new cast, even though I was prepared not to. The tent, the challenges, the lovely contestants etc. etc. look like the original premise of the series, which is great. The change in cast was pretty seamless.

Oh, I hope that isn't true. I mean there are still two episodes with the original cast we haven't seen on PBS. I thought there might be a problem with future episodes with the new cast as it is also on a different network - not BBC.

I think that Netflix will pick up the first season with the new judge and hosts since Channel 4 has a deal with U.S. Neflix. A good time to release it would be next month, because that's when the new season starts on Channel 4.

Episode 4 - Desserts
Wow, I was surprised and have been surprised that so many of the bakers are having trouble with so many of the challenges since the beginning of this season. I was glad to see Brendan do so well this week even with the judges getting him numerous times for being "too 70's". I mean it is retro to be 70's at the moment.
I am not surprised Stuart was sent home. I am surprised he lasted this long as it seemed he had disasters every week.
Some of the showstoppers seemed overly ambitious and maybe that was the problem, I would still luv to have a piece of each one as I am sure they all taste fabulous.

Yet, once again Paul mentioned in passing that the winner of bread week wins. That was the young man who has now gone back to middle of the pack.
I was surprised (as was Stuart) that he didn't go home last week, or the week before. He always forgot an ingredient, Remember he tried to add simple syrup to his treacle tart while it was still in the oven?

Does anybody know the audition process for this show? They advertise it as some of the best bakers in Britain....but frankly, it don't always see that.

Well, weird things can happen with a stove that you're unfamiliar with. Apparently, the process is a drawn out affair now which I can see because the quality of the bakes gets better with each season.

I read somewhere that there are local, then regional contests and the contestants are drawn from that.
Oh, the winner of bread week was John. I don't know (don't want to be spoiled) whether that actually means anything this season.

It might be a bit different but it is a custard. And she would make large ones. I remember always hoping the flan she was making to take to an event would crack so we could have it. Still tasted good.

So I was watching something on CBC tonight and there was a commercial for the new season of The Great British Baking Show. It showed a new cast and it is listed as 2018. It starts Wednesday at 8pm. I'm not sure if those outside of Canada can view it, but they have episodes up of the Canadian version that I can view, so if anyone is interested they might give it a try.

I just love those SMEG appliances! I've seen the SMEG toaster in a kitchen shop & it's sooooo cute. $150.

I laughed at how disdainfully they regarded "American" pie---apparently too sweet for British tastes. I can't imagine what the pretty dark haired girl did to her peanut butter and chocolate pie that made them hate it.....that is a favorite combination here...maybe that was the problem....too American.
Have we ever seen a star baker be last in one of the challenges and get to be the star. His pie must have been spectacular.

What did she do to it to strip away the flavor? They really must have a different palate because I notice they use fruits with added flavor a lot. Also more spice type flavors than American bakers might use. But, then, I'm old fashion with with liberal use of brown sugar. I don't notice brown sugar on their benches, mostly treacle instead. I mean ginger in a key lime pie?

I had already seen the first 4 episodes of the newest season while flying with British Airways last spring. Super good. The new judges and hosts fit right in. Seamless.
