Thought you all might enjoy seeing this picture of Prue "back in the day." Did you realize she is 81 now????? View Attachment Wow, she is lovely, but she is lovely now too. I agree. So nice to see a mature woman on television who can still move her face.

Great Episode this week. The theme was "Biscuits" and for the opener they had to make Brandy Snaps, and while most of the bakers were able to make a great tasting snap the actual construction of the snaps weren't great (with the exception of the man who looks like Weird Al with shorter hair). The Technical was a jammy biscuit. I've had the American and Jewish version of these with different fillings and they are amazing! Very good, but kinda tricky to make, as some of the bakers found out. The Showstopper was to create a movable childhood toy and I felt really bad for people like Jurgen who had a very poor childhood and didn't have toys. I felt really bad for the people whose works broke. Star Baker is no surprise, and neither is the person who went home. And Jurgen's phone call finally went through. He is my fav; apparently he has a Masters in Physics as well as being a great baker and musician!

I think several of them are very talented, but Jurgen just stands out to me too. Hopefully I didn't just jinx him...
I felt bad for the lady whose rocking horse fell apart, it was really pretty for the short time it held together.

I am kinda cringing at the cast this season because of the messes that are being created. Guiseppe and Jurgen are the standouts currently with Crystelle also up there. Seeing some of the brandy snaps made me wonder are they running out of bakers in the UK?

Our local PBS re-runs former seasons of GBBO on Saturday. Today we started the season with Nadiya and Paul (of lion-head bread fame). Happy Fridays AND Saturdays for me for the next several weeks.

If they keep going like this, both Jurgen and Giuseppe could make the finals unless they have a bad week. Hopefully the rest of the bakers step up, otherwise it could get kinda boring with the same two bakers almost always at the top. At least they're all likable. Maggie may be my favorite, her peppy demeanor and hearty laugh are just so contagious.

Well of course Guiseppe crushed it on bread week, I expected no less. I thought Jurgen would do better than he did, though.
And I don't know where Freya is from but I love listening to her accent!

The showstoppers turned out nicer than I thought. With the exception of Guiseppe it was opposite land; people who were lagging did better, while people who have been doing well did worse. This group is so nice you feel bad seeing anyone go home; the person who left was a sweetheart but it was their time, I think.

It's episode 3, I am getting used to everyone's personality and accents and bonding with them all. Even the contestants seem to be more relaxed and gotten into the rhythm of the tent. Bread week is always fun and educational.

I don't know who does the casting for this show, but dang what a great job they do of gathering interesting, lovely bakers There doesn't seem to be a clunker in the bunch....as is the case most seasons. I like watching them all. Every elimination is tough to watch. Maggie with the big smile and rosy cheeks is adorable. She smiles and laughs her way through and seems to be having such a fun time in the tent!

It is hard to see anyone go.

I always wondered about the illustrations. Thanks for the link, the illustrations make the show, giving it that elevated but still homemade "bakes" look.

Dessert Week made my fillings ache -- every dish was so super-sweet. Among the front-runners, I loved Jurgen's musical jaconde dessert (with the black pepper after-blast, lol). That was next level. S.B. Chigs got a handshake for his pretty pavlova, but Giuseppe was the mere mortal this week with some imperfect bakes. But even his mistakes were better than most of the other desserts in the tent. Crystelle and Lizzie had pretty good weeks as well. Poor loveable Maggie smiled and laughed her way through failure after failure the past couple of weeks -- it was time. But her sweet demeanor will be missed. And you know she will never forget to add the flour again. I have a sinking feeling that Freya is going to hit a wall sooner than later if she keeps trying to do all-vegan bakes. I would miss her vocal fry if she left... Next week is German Week. I'm assuming they didn't know Jurgen was going to be in the cast when they made the schedule...

Next week is German Week. I'm assuming they didn't know Jurgen was going to be in the cast when they made the schedule... I read somewhere that the bakes are decided upon by production before the contestants are selected. Between the Italian-themed bakes (won by Giuseppe) and the German week coming up, that must be true. Too bad there weren't any flourless bakes this week . . . poor Maggie.

Nice to see people trying new things and working on their health. However, talk about very heavy, stodgy, flavorless food.

Luv'ed Maggie and her attitude. I do think the pace of tent baking flustered her a bit, and it seemed just a bad day for her. I will miss her.

Sweet, swwet Maggie. I felt so bad for her when her cake was leaning to the side. However, she took it in good spirits. Also happy for someone else winning Star Baker this week because not only were they obviously shocked and thrilled, it's a lot better for us viewers that one person doesn't dominate.

I couldn't see a clear pattern at all. I do think it is great she is doing it and she might just get somewhere with it, but I don't think, in the end, she will win.

Episode 6: Pastry
Wow, thought George was going home this week but he must have done something to save himself.
Like the other contestants I was holding my breath for both Amanda and George when their showstoppers were in danger of total collapse. I love how Chigs helped Amanda. Unfortunately, I have read that George is experiencing a lot on online hate and trolling. OK, I may laugh at George a bit, his bakes do come across messy at times, but he wouldn't have make it on the show if his stuff didn't taste good. It is OK to express like of dislike on posts like this but to go the next step and directly send hate filled messages to someone's online social media is just wrong on so many levels.

Why are people hating on George? He's not THAT bad, and he's done well enough to stay in the competition. People can be so gross sometimes. Chigs was such a sweetheart, jumping in to help Amanda like he did. Crystelle's face when she got that handshake was hilarious.

There are people online who delight in contacting people directly with hateful things that they wouldn't dare say to their faces, and it's terrible.
My opinion of Chigs goes up every week. I love it when they help each other out.
Congrats to Crystalle!

Crystelle's face when she got that handshake was hilarious. Paul is getting more crafty with his handshake setups -- that was a nice fake-out he did with her pastry.

I couldn't a fraction of what he bakes! And he seems like a delightful person.

By the way, for those who are able to view/access the episodes, there are new seasons of The Great Canadian Baking Show and The Great Kiwi (New Zealand) Bake Off airing now as well. Canada is on week 3 and Kiwi is on week 2.
(EDIT to correct my geographical flat brain tire, lol)

Um, Kiwi is New Zealand not Australian. For shame. Lol.
I’m saving the Canadian version until after British is done. I am watching Kiwi - such a beautiful locale and it’s always interesting to see bakes that are different from our North American ones.

Watched this week and blimey, Caramel Week was hard on everyone.
I did not agree on who went home. Creating a practically inedible Showstopper should be grounds for leaving.
