I was hoping for a James win but when he did poorly in the 1st challenge and then his was they only cake they found fault with in the 3rd round I knew he was out of the running. I'm not surprised by John winning. I liked his final cake better than Brendan's.

Brendan was the fussy baker who stuck to "traditional" desserts because he didn't think you should mess with tradition. I think it hurt him in the end. He was fun to watch...such a perfectionist. I imagine he'd be horrid to live with. I thought John's final dessert was pure perfection, so elegant and beautiful. I am glad he won. It's nice to see a young person get the accolades he deserves.

I kind of thought Brendan should have won, but I'm not upset that John did. I think Brenden being more traditional (and older) was going to keep him from winning.

I was really glad that John won after his family pretty much dissed him in their little interview during the show. They were making fun of him, but not in a fun way, I thought. And I could have done without his mother's cleavage.

Episode 10 - The Final I was hoping Brendon would win, but after the last several episodes it looked for sure as if James would win the glass serving dish. It was going to be a close finale and really I would be OK with any of the bakers winning. Evaluation James | Great flavors, and experimentation | John | Very up and down over the weeks | Brendan | Consistent, knowledgeable |
I luv the way this show throws out little tidbits about the bakers: James - grandmother taught him to bake growing up on Shetland. Girlfriend and roomie put James up to put in an application as a lark John - family seems a bit hard on him, and poke at him for never having won or succeeded at anything. The way his sister and mother poke at him it comes across as if they don't expect much from him. Rather sad. Brendan - we get to meet his partner, and find out he is Buddish per Google: Day 1 Signature Challenge - 2.5 hours - create a savory pithiver. per wiki: Judging: Brendan | Excellent, well done | John | good flavor, excellent, well done | James | looks good, soggy bottom, bit unbaked, good flavor, filling cooked well |
Technical Challenge - 2.5 hours - create 25 fondant fancies - 25 squares of lemon sponge, a bit of apricot jam, marzipan, the sides covered in butter cream, with a small dome on butter cream on top, covered in pink fondant that is flavored with rose water with a bit of chocolate stripes for decoration. Judging: Paul comments that all don't look good Brendan | tastes good, application of butter cream poor, fondant looks bad | John | small squares, fondant wet, chocolate neater, too much buttercream | James | fondant thicker, nice sponge, rosewater too strong |
James wins but Mary's points out that all three bakes were not to a high standard for all the bakers. Day 2 Showstopper Challenge - 4 hours - make a chiffon cake based on a theme that means something to you per wiki: Paul, Mary, Mel and Sue evaluate the bakers: Brendan - traditional, has good flavors John - technically good, new techniques James - great innovator Judging: John | looks good, rich, lovely, well done | Brendan | elegant, all gasp after Paul's cut a slice it looks so good, good layers, sponge is like a cloud, have a hit of raspberry with a bit of almond after, gingerbread cookies - delicate and crispy, well done | James | 5 cakes do not meet criteria of the brief, which to judge, dry, it's cake like not spongy, (better) to make one cake with different flavored sections, "it's a shame that, James" |
Afterward: Paul, Mary, Mel and Sue evaluate the bakers: James ... (it's) difficult ... James has been star baker 3 times, Brendan 2 times, and John once. John - started off strong, then he went off (there were several times I thought he could have been eliminated and was surprised he stayed), he is emotional Brendan - consistent, very good, very strong signature and show stopper challenges (he could practice) After all three bakes these are the standings. James is in third place and it's neck and neck between John and Brendan. | John | James | Brendan | Signature | yes | no | yes | Technical | no | yes | no | Showstopper | yes | no | yes |
The Winner is: John Per Paul & Mary, John nailed it, he had high standards, a modern twist, and very passionate about baking.

I hope they eventually show the UK TGBBO season 1-3 on PBS as PBS season 5, 6 & 7.
The UK Season 8 will be dropped on Netflix August 31, 2018.

Agree. Even the repeats on PBS are over so I have not had any GBBS all this week.

Here's a link to the ORIGINAL FIRST SEASON!!!!! I haven't watched it yet, but I've read a lot about how different it was, in that the tent moved from location to location, etc.

It was announced on Thursday that the next three seasons of this baking show will be shown on Netflix. Personally, I'm sorry to hear that as I'd prefer it be kept on PBS, but at least it will be accessible to us here in the States. The first show begins August 31, without Mary Berry and Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroye as hosts. They're also planning on broadcasting holiday specials for the next three years. Because a commercial TV network in England outbid the public broadcaster BBC, this prevented our PBS stations being able to show it here.

I’ve been watching the season with the new British hosts on Canadian TV, and they’re very good! It’s been a seamless transition.

I can't wait to see the new season on channel 4, and I'm glad that everyone can see last year's season on Netflix once it's released. The new hosts and judge are rather good.

I watched the Mary Barry episode of Who Do You Think You Are UK on YouTube last night, and it was lovely. The UK version seems to be much better, in my opinion. The number of documents they unearth is just uncanny. And oh-my-gosh... Mary’s house is divine, and her husband is gorgeous.

Wait until the new episode drops, though. You've already seen the three that are currently there.

Guys, Season 8 of the Great British Baking Show, with the new judges (and Paul Hollywood), is also on YouTube. I noticed that episode 1 of season 9 has also been posted. Season 8 is most enjoyable; however, there are some annoying 30-second commercials that play twice, back-to-back, interspersed throughout the series. My iPad allowed me to move the timeline bar at the bottom to fast forward through them, though. Also, while there are a lot of contestants, they only do 2 challenges per episode. When there are fewer contestants, they show the typical 3 challenges. www.dailymotion.com/video/x5zhicyAnd as a sidebar, if you haven’t seen the UK version of Who Do You Think You Are that features Mary Barry, it’s a must for any fan. And her husband is gorgeous!

The new season of GBBO aired earlier this week! Loved the opening "Back to the Future" skit at the beginning of the show; not sure of what to make of Noel Fielding's new haircut. This week's theme was biscuits, which was interesting because we generally get them later in the season. The Signature bake was to make a biscuit from any region in the UK/where you are from originally from and it made for some very interesting (and tasty) bakes as a lot of the bakers put their own spin on regional favorites. The Technical was a Wagon Wheel (something that looked like a Moon pie with jelly and cream in the center instead of marshmallow). Lots of bakers got this one wrong; it seemed difficult to fabricate. The Showstopper was a 3d biscuit self-portrait of the baker in a location that meant something to them. This seems like a good start to the season!

As promised, season "7" has been added to the GBBS on Netflix. It reads as season 5. I'm into the first episode. While I did watch four episodes on Daileymotion, on Netflix I have closed caption for everything so I can more easily understand.

The wagon wheel has marshmallow as well as jam, no cream. The Brits love to put jam on things. We have Wagon Wheels here in Canada; not a big fan. I was a fan of the showstopper -so many great biscuit “selfies”.

Thanks for the correction; I thought it was a creme and jelly filling! Now it REALLY sounds like a moon pie with jelly in the center.

I've seen UK S6/PBS S3, which I loved. And the last half of the last season that just finished. Now I'm watching S5 UK/S1 PBS, although I've already seen the final few episodes a while ago, but luckily I forgot who wins. I think I'm going to have to keep out of this thread for a while until I get caught up to the latest season.

This week is bread week, and once again, Paul Hollywood created a minor controversy when he criticized an (older, of course) contestant on their continued use of Bakewell in her Chelsea Buns. Apparently, his comments did not go over well with the British public. For the first bake, they made different types of Chelsea buns and some of them looked delicious. Paul even gave out a handshake to one lucky contestant. For the Technical, they had to make naan and the results were...unpredictable in a lot of cases. The Showstopper was korovai, a traditional bread in Eastern Europe that’s mainly associated with weddings which is notoriously difficult to make. I was very happy for who got Star Baker (two in a row!) and equally sad to see a certain contestant leave. This season has the usual sweet mix of people who are very supportive of each other.
