I was watching Best Baker in America or whatever it's called, and to my surprise Mr. "Oh lawd honey, yes Jesus, chile" is on there as a judge, lol. He's really toned it down on the sayings, and is actually good.

This is season 2. Jason was also on season 1 along with the female judge. I like that this year they have a 3rd very well qualified judge for the main challenge.
Adam was on a Spring Baking Championship show a couple of years ago. I had to go looking because he looked so familiar. I love watching the French Pastry Chef work...divine.

I thought Adam looked familiar! There are some seriously talented bakers on Best Baker this season. Those cheesecakes....if we still had the drool smiley I'd put it here.

This week on Best Baker, Marcella and Jason were dressed like twins! It was hysterical to me as they both had on a Chinese red with Jason wearing a patterned jacket. Adorable. Once, at the tasting table she leaned over with her napkin and dabbed crumb off the side of his mouth.
Adam is still in it. They finally got rid of Matt who has been the weakest link since the beginning.
Finale next week.

I'm excited. I like everyone who is left (plus they are all excellent bakers) so I'll be okay with whoever wins.

A lot of this group of bakers were on the Spring Baking show. If not all at one time or other.
I do love Jason , he was on Food Network Star or something like that last year and won. They people just keep moving around to different shows.

Jason is the previous Food Network Star winner as well as a Holiday Baking winner. Marcella is on The Kitchen. Adam is the only one I recognize as being a previous contestant on a baking show. He came in second two Spring Baking Championships ago.

She was good at chocolate work when she was on her season.

Before I congratulate the winner, I would like to congratulate the judges and host for their color coordination of outfits this episode. Marcella has really stepped up her game to keep up with Jason's colorfully patterned jackets, and Scott Conant even wore a tie that was in the color theme - I enjoyed every minute of the three of them this season. The adjunct judges for the second bakes have really been the creme de la creme of the baking world. Kudos Food Network for your casting. Hello ADAM!!!!!

I'm happy for Adam, that last cake of his was crazy. It had a little bit of everything! And now I want chocolate cake. That was a fun season, looking forward to the next installment.

Anyone catch the new Halloween Baking Championship Monday night? Baking season has officially started. I did! I look forward to it every year, that's my start of the Halloween season!
I love Carla, Lorraine, and the male judge. I liked the concept of the main bake (having a candy shell that you melt, revealing the surprise inside) but the reality was a lot of the bakers had issues with it. The guy that went home didn't even bother to put his candied skull inside the candy shell, he left it outside. The GBBO had a similar bake for their Showstopper last week that was more successful.

I love the judges' costume reveal for the main challenge. Carla goes all out. Yes, the chocolate melt (white or dark) has been done before, but it is always fun to watch them hold their breath.
Sunday starts the show where teams of three with the carvers, bakers and sugar workers pulling out all the stops.

I liked the top two the best. Loved the caged one with the pomegranate seeds, and the "tombstone" one with the candied hearts inside.
The judges costumes are always great. Carla always has so much fun with hers!

Next week there's going to be TWO Halloween Baking Championship shows; one at 8, the other at 9. The 8pm will be the regular show. However, the 9pm show is a "Best Of" which will showcase the best scary bakes over the years. Don't forget to watch both!

This show is so much fun! For the preheat, they had to make a scary desert using yams. For the main heat, they had to create a pumpkin patch out of mini bundt cakes. The add on was an edible scarecrow. One contestant made her pumpkins into zombies with green food coloring and ooze, while another contestant's scarecrow broke at the last minute forcing him to slop up decoration that displeased the judges. The costumes were really amazing; Carla was Robin Hood, Zac was Ghost Mozart, and Lorraine was a midsummer fairy. I liked the eliminated person but I liked the person he was up against more so I was okay with it.
The Special that came on after the show was really good and highlighted many of the bakes done over the years. What was really interesting was the judges costumes; they literally went from Party City cheap in the first year to great, detailed costumes. Carla's also been the only judge that has been there since the beginning, but I like the current team of Carla, Zac, and Lorraine and I hope they stay.

I love the Halloween Baking Championship! Not only for the show itself but also because it means more baking championships are around the corner. I love this trio of judges as well. I was a little disappointed in the mini bundt cakes. I felt sorry for the guy who's scarecrow broke.

In his case, I think he was saved because his Vanilla mini cakes were delicious and he won the preheat with an elaborate design. The judges could tell that something went wrong with the scarecrow and he was forced to improvise. Not only did the other guy's cakes look bad, they lacked the taste of ginger (which was his assigned spice). The only thing that tasted like ginger was the cake that made up the head of that stylized scarecrow he made.

He didn't want to use fresh ginger as he said it is so overpowering. He should have used fresh ginger.

I've watched enough of these shows that it is etched into my brain... if you want the taste of ginger to come through, you gotta use fresh ginger :D At least that's what the judges keep saying. :D

Interesting enough on The GBBO last week they said to always use another form of ginger in addition to fresh because fresh ginger has a habit of dissipating during the baking process. It was a bake where the contestants had to make a ginger cake, so it made sense to me.

I'm loving all the Halloween programming on Food Network!
Last night, a new show aired after Halloween Wars. It's a new series with the best gingerbread artists in America doing different Halloween themes. The winner from each week is invited back for a grand finale competition and the opportunity to win 25k. Last night's theme was to do something related to the 30th anniversary of the release of Beetlejuice and the contestants went all out; the artistry they put into their creations was amazing. I also didn't realize that there are different types of gingerbread for different effects. This show is definitely worth a watch, I think it's called "the Haunted Gingerbread Showdown."

This week's episode was in two parts. For the preheat, a "monster" had wrecked the kitchen, leaving bits and pieces behind. The contestants were then assigned different body parts, which were then combined to make a 3D sketch of the culprit. They had to make the body parts out of pate a choux with whatever filling they desired. In the main heat, the monster is caught, but had an enormous appetite so they had to make giant versions of smaller desserts (whoopie pies, cupcakes, pies, etc). The same person won the pre and main heats and I was glad since I like that person's bakes. The costumes were fab; Zac was a lifeguard, Carla a vintage ghost, and Lorraine a Viking Warrior.

I caught the second (?) episode of best Gingerbread. Jason was a judge this week. Is he a judge every week? Sandra Lee is host. This week Elvira was the guest judge. Anyway, I think they said 70 percent has to be gingerbread and 90+ percent edible. The guy who advanced has been on a previous cooking show or even FNStar - seen him somewhere before. Interesting series.

OK, I watched Best Halloween Gingerbread show again this week and Jason was on it again, so I think he's a regular judge for that show.
It's getting to be that time on the Halloween Baking Championships where people you like will be in danger of going home. For the pre-heat the bakers had to make spooky petit-fours. The main heat consisted of weird monster pairings (ie: ghost and werewolf, zombie and witch, etc) that the bakers had to make a cake featuring them. The winner of the preheat got to have Zack's help for ten minutes at any time. The twist was each baker got a surprise flavoring they had to feature in the cake (ie: rosewater, lavender, orange blossom, elderflower, etc) This bake was like a role-reversal, as people who up to this point had done well were floundering, while folks who had been struggling did extremely well. Most of the trouble came from having too much (or too little) of the special flavoring. I was very happy for the Top Baker this week as they have been struggling up to this point.
