Clinton Kelly has a new TV job after losing out mid-day to Strahan and Sara...he is the HOST of Spring Baking Championship. It was so weird to see him on a Food Network show. I hope he gets into the fun of hosting one of these baking shows.

I binged on two seasons of SBC----one with Bobby Deen and one with some guy named Ali whom I did not recognize. Are they changing hosts regularly now? Didn't get to watch Clinton ( whom I do like) but hope that he does well.

It looks like they regularly switch the hosts of SBC. Clinton did a really good job.
I liked the main heat challenge (making a watercolor cake). So far I like the top three contenders in the Main Heat and the Italian guy.

Those rhubarb pies messed up a lot of the bakers on SBC last night. And why did the home baker make simple waffles on a stick? That was never going to fly. I've never heard of a St. Honoré cake/pastry before, but it sure looked tasty...

I'm still having trouble reconciling this Cory with Michael Simon's Iron Chef sous chef. He has put on weight and gotten older.
Rhubarb was a tricky challenge - particularly in pie - where its sourness would have to be countered. However, I had a few very good Rhubarb pies in my childhood. It grew wild against the fence and I loved chewing on it.
In Buddy vs. Duff they did a pie challenge and Duff insisted on putting together a butter layered dough - you know the one on GBBS where they fold and refrigerate. Anyway, I'm surprised he didn't put more emphasis on "flakiness" while critiquing.

I'll make waffles...on a stick!" when the challenge was to reconstruct the fairground treat you got into something else I knew she was going home.

I can't believe they came up with so many different things to make from canned biscuits! All I could think of in the beginning was a cobbler. And to the guy who couldn't open the can. He sure wasn't thrilled about using those things. Lots of great bakers this season, but I think Saber might be my favorite. He's adorable and creative.

I think Saber is my favorite as well. So far, only smiles and giggles from him and nice bakes. Yeah, the guy from Italy can get rather snooty about processed baked goods, but I loved when even Clinton couldn't get it open. (Reminded me of a recent Thanksgiving attempt at opening the crescent roll tube.) Someone did as he presented an offering.

In the Italian guy's defense they don't have that type of biscuit in Europe, while Saber is married to an American and had more experience with them. I laughed when he tried to open them with a can opener. II loved Tracey's peach and nectarine cobbler and wish the Food Network would include a recipe for it on their site because my cobblers always turn out watery while her juice was nice and thick. I felt really bad for her when she forgot the key item on here cake because it prevented her from being in the top two.
My favs are Saber, Tracey, Karina (smiley Latina lady), Riccardo (Italian guy), and Marqessa (lady with blonde streak in her hair). They did a really good job of casting this year.

Kao add a little all purpose flour to your fruit and it will help thicken the juice. A 9x13 cobbler I would use at least 2 tablespoons. You can mix it in your sugar and it won't lump.

Restaurant Impossible is back. The first episode was last night. Robert helped a place in Escondido, CA. I loved the makeover.

I was a bit put off by last night's Spring Baking Show. You have one contestant that didn't even bother to follow the brief that did a good cake with someone that did follow the brief and made a decent cake and you kick off the person who followed the brief? I realize that Saber is a great baker and a really nice guy but if they're playing by their own rules they should have sent him home last night, especially since they have sent people home in the past for not following the theme. I felt horrible for Tracey last night.

I'm guessing Saber's flavors saved him this go around - and I wonder if he just didn't understand what they meant by "enchanted forest" cake. He didn't even know what moss was. Tracy has struggled with decorating several times now, and that cake last night was not pretty, even if it did fit the theme. I loved Ricardo's idea of using bubble wrap to make the honey comb decorations, that was really neat. He sure redeemed himself from last week's mess.

We might not have enchanted forests but we do have moss. Even in the city. I think what saved him was taste.

Tracy struggled with application of decoration and taste even though the she was in theme; but Saber made his forest a meadow - a beautiful basket picking up meadow stuff and the taste of his cake outweighed that of Tracy. I think the right person went home.

The owner of Filomena's on last nights's Restaurant Impossible had a lot of anger issues. Her stepmother was mean to her and she was taking it out on everyone else, even her customers. I'm surprised they didn't just delay the opening in stead of having people wait for 3 hours. With social media, if would be easy to contact people. I wonder if the owner/chef will ever start changing menu items to fit customer requests. The show didn't mention that at the end.

Was that the episode where a lady cursed Robert out for "insulting her food" and he was like "F you; if you don't want my help I have better things to do?" I was half asleep when I heard that exchange and was just wow. I know Robert can be very abrupt but in no way did he deserve that.

I don't remember that, but there were multiple heated exchanges. I may have just missed it. I do remember the owner cussing Robert out and storming out of the restaurant. She snapped when he said her meatballs were dry.

It was such fun to see Adalberto from Spring Baking Championship and Best Baker in America appear on Buddy's new show "Bake You Rich". HE WON! He made a savory Cuban filling in a flaky sweet crust (Cuban Meat Pies). It will be massed produced and sold on Buddy Velastro's website. www.carlosbakery.com/

I KNEW he was on one of those Baking shows, lol! One of the nicest things about Food Network is if you're a good chef, cook, baker, etc they will have you on more of their shows so you can possibly win a big prize. That's what happened with Adam from Best Bakers in America, Darnell (who was on several Guys Grocery Games episodes) who ended up winning last year's Ultimate Thanksgiving Challenge, Julia from Brazil who was on the Christmas Cookie Challenge who later showed up on the Holiday Baking Championship, Jason (Oh honey yes Jesus chile) showing up and winning EVERYTHING, etc. It's a nice way of seeing familiar faces.

The dude with the glasses? Yes, he looked familiar.
I knew the moment he grabbed the horse that had "grapefruit" on it tonight that Riccardo was going home. Grapefruit is such a notoriously hard flavor to work with, and combined with the rose it was impossible. Last week was the point where it started to get truly sad to see any of these bakers go. Hopefully the Food Network gods have enjoyed him enough that they will put him on a future show. I'm surprised that the guy who had pink lemon did great, but then again I think it's more sweet anyway?

Aw, I hated to see Riccardo go home, I figured he'd be in the finale. That grapefruit flavor really did screw him over. Hopefully he'll pop up on another show in the future, he's very talented (as are all the finalists this year!).
One day I'm going to have to figure out how to do a mirror glaze on a cake. It looks so pretty!
