Loved, loved, loved "All Creatures Great and Small." Was intrigued . . . and then frightened . . . by "Elizabeth is Missing." As a woman in her 70s who is becoming forgetful, Glenda Jackson's characterization of the reality of Alzheimer's terrified me. It is my worst fear. I reminded hubby that if I get like that, I do NOT want him trying to deal with me at home without a significant amount of professional help. And if it gets much worse, I figured I wouldn't be aware of it, so he should put me in a care home. Glenda Jackson really was superb. It was like being inside someone with dementia, a wonderful portrayal but frightening. I reminded my hubby of the same things you did. His uncle , was a teacher, has dementia, it's extremely sad.

I know! I feel everyone in both of our countries should watch it, to soothe our hearts over the past year, and this past week. I need to escape to a place of sweetness, humor, compassion and kindness. I loved it, we loved it. The scenery was beautiful, and all the animals. I cried when the calf was finally born Jess is a beautiful, beautiful dog..💓 Mrs Hall is my fave..but I really enjoyed them all. Did you like it? I love James of course, Jess is so smart and adorable, but I really love Mrs Hall! Honestly, every one of these actors does an excellent portrayal of characters you love, or grow to love. I couldn’t stand just watching the first episode. I wanted more, and more....I used my PBS passport and watched all of the episodes! I couldn’t stop myself and will watch them all again each week. This is a wonderful series, and the final episode was the “2020 Christmas Special” , and it is memorable and very special. My favorite actually, although until I got to it, I said every episode was my favorite. Well done! I’m ready for another season, please, as soon as covid is no longer a threat.

So happy to see "All Creatures"! I read Herriot's books in middle school and adored them. It's so nice to see them brought to life.
And wouldn't you know, I married a man who's from the same area! "Darrowby" is actually the small town of Thirsk, which is about 20 miles from my husband's city of York. When we lived over there, he took me to the Herriot Museum, which is inside the original house where Herriot lived and worked with Siegfried. Oh my, if you want to appreciate how far we women have come, go to this museum! The entire house is set up just the way it looked when Herriot lived there. The kitchen is huge. If I remember correctly, it had a big coal-burning stove. I definitely remember that it had this big wash tub with a wringer (Hubby said they called a "mangle") attached to the side. Hubby said he could remember his grandmother doing the laundry by hand in a tub like that.
Overall, I enjoyed this first episode. I could kind of sort of understand Siegried's anger after the cat mix-up, though. What if he had actually operated on that poor ginger cat? Or heavens above, given some poor cat a medicine it didn't need? I can't imagine a modern vet would be happy about a mix-up like that, either.
It's so sad to think that this was Diana Rigg's last role. I am old enough to remember when she hosted "Masterpiece Theater". (Or was it "Mystery"? I loved both back in the day.)
In their cast profiles for PBS, it says that Nicolas Ralph's uncle lived right near Herriot as a boy. In fact, Ralph's uncle actually got Herriot to autograph his copy of Herriot's book! Ralph's family was ecstatic when they found out he had gotten the part of Herriot in this adaptation. Callum Woodhouse (Tristan) adores animals, so asked if the golden retriever could appear with him whenever he was alone in the infirmary.

babbred . . . THANK YOU for sharing your experiences in the area where the books were set. How wonderful it must be for you to mentally relive your visit while watching the show. We've always said that we didn't want to go back to Great Britain because of the 10-hour flights it would involve. But between watching "Last Tango in Halifax" and "All Creatures Great and Small" and "Howard's End" . . . if Covid ever goes away, we might make one last trip over. Your post is making that desire even stronger.

All Creatures: I find the views breathtaking. Each episode makes me want to pause, and see the landscapes in slow motion. I also love how they made sure that each episode ends on a heart-warming note. That is something we each need right now, I need it every day actually. Wonderful to bring a show like this to our screens at such a time. Thank you Masterpiece, Thank you PBS! Babbred, YES Thank you so much for sharing! I love the actor for his gentleness, and he does a perfect job of standing up when it is needed. I can't imagine anyone else giving a better performance now.

Absolutely, we love Kate Phillips very good in peaky blinders and the crown. It's a nice lead in to all creatures great and small. I love the banter between miss scarlet and the Duke

Last night Hubby and I just gazed in wonder. He worked for the National Trust, which oversees many historical properties in Britain. His job involved traveling to properties around North Yorkshire. He said the scenery from last night's episode brought back such fond memories. Thank you, PBS and BBC.
He was wondering if the waterfall was in Goathland, a small village famous for its woods and waterfall. There's a hiking trail you can take through the woods to get to the waterfall, which is so pretty and peaceful. Typical British, you first have to hike across a field. It's so cute, though. The locals let their sheep wander everywhere. I remember when we parked our car in the public lot, there was a grassy area right in front of us, complete with sheep grazing. They also filmed a long-running British TV show there, so it's well known in their film industry.
I did feel a tad bit sorry for James regarding the cow incident. I'm assuming the farmer had separated the calf and was perhaps bottle-feeding it since the mother couldn't get up? Anyway, shouldn't the farmer have mentioned that the cow gave birth just before she got sick? That seems like a rather important thing to mention if you're talking to an animal doctor. And I'm somewhat confused about how Tristan will fit in from now on. Surely it's illegal to practice animal medicine without a license? So is Tristan going to continue to tag along and pester James, instead? Although I must say that I do kind of agree with Tristan and Siegried. I know poor James is nervous and trying to establish himself, but it might not hurt to smile a little and not lecture the owners about how backwards they are.
I love the accents. They are spot on for northern England! Hubby grew up in a village like Darrowby. However, he went to university and afterwards lived in the big city for years, so his accent is understandable. When I first met his family, though, I could not understand a blessed word they were saying. Poor Hubby had to translate.

On Tristan, I could answer all of your questions as a spoiler, BUT, I really think it is much better if you watch and see how it plays out. Vet qualifications were much different then, notice that no one is referred to as "Doctor". I almost die each time I watch Harriott ask for water, then goes in to examine without gloves, than washes arm briefly afterward. I mean Hello! (Now they wear humongous disposables gloves that go clear up to the shoulder). Vet Medicine has changed considerably since then. I will say that at first, I thought of Tristan as some annoying fly, but grew to love him. The characters grow more charming with each episode.

Harriott describes these things in detail. So, for example, that poor cow who couldn't get her calf out. He describes in graphic detail what it was like having his hand up there, trying to find and grab the calf. It's not for the squeamish!

Watched Miss Scarlet and the Duke.
Was able to watch episode 3 live/DVR.
Was able to watch episode 2 ON Demand ... that was tricky to figure out as it looked like I had to pay $1.99 for the episode through FIOS On Demand.
Episode 1 was not available FIOS On Demand even though it aired only 3 weeks ago. I was able to watch it On line through PBS and I hate watching On Line ... chair is not that comfortable and it is on my monitor, ugh.
The other option was to sign on to PBS +, this PBS's streaming service available for $4.99. I am so fed up with this option as I already pay over $200 per month for cable and internet to have to pay for an episode on a cable network I already have access to is annoying. It is like paying for the same thing twice.
It is a good series.

Me too, I mean living through those horrific times is unbearable to watch at times. I ended it when her mother was being led up to be hanged. My sister texted me today about what happened after that. So, I will try to watch part 2, I hope it will be easier to watch. I have such respect for the women of any race that went before us seeking equality, freedom, right to vote, right to anything for women! Where would we be without these strong women who gave everything to make a change?
Acting was wonderful. I mean watching July carefully remove each button, take her good ole sweet time getting to her shouting mistress, then run breathlessly into the room, was perfect!

Poor James Herriott, one minute euphoria saving that beauty and making senior Vet.....the next minute he is heartbroken. I loved how they all came together to support him in the end. Next week is the finale, and it is the best episode of the season!
Also, am enjoying Miss Scarlet and the Duke which also has finale next Sunday. I want more!

Final episode, last 10 minutes is so heartwarming. I’ve watched the episode, well entire season three times and can’t wait to watch it again on Sunday! My love for Mrs Hall this season is enormous! I mean she could easily win MVP if they were given to actors in a series. Tristan, what a rascal he was at the start and now, don’t you just love him? Great Series! I hope there will one day be a second season.
I guess we need to add actors to a priority list.......
Miss Scarlet and the Duke, love these two. What I don’t understand is if they are cousins, why do they not share the closeness you would expect?. Was William only dealing regularly with her father. Has Eliza been away? They act as if they are more recently reacquainted. I assume the relation is more second cousin. Sparks of attraction are definitely there!
I don’t want either of these shows to end!!!

Loving All Creatures. I like Miss Scarlet, but her clamped mouth talking is distracting. The Long Song- that was brutal. I was not prepared for how harsh it would be. The actress and actor playing Caroline and Robert must be really good cause I absolutely hated them both. I wish July had found Emily at the end though.

Yes, Bearcata they are cousins according to the Duke when he explained his relationship with Eliza.... was that last week or the week before? That's what confused me. I know back then, cousins marrying within the family was OK. But, I thought it odd that while he was very close to her father, Eliza acts as if he just recently came into her life.
