I loved the Durells in Corfu. It's getting closer to WW2; I hope it's not going to end sad and dark.
Poldark- um yas, Elizabeth! Haunt George into madness; it's the perfect fate for him. And I hope G. Charles and the mahogany heiress will get together.

I chuckle every time I see Valentine........George has to know Valentine is Ross' son! I mean come on he is Ross' mini-me! George is so angry. ugh. I hope Valentine does not have to stay with him much longer its just not healthy for him around George. Geoffrey Charles is so grown up. I love Cecily the Mahogany heiress. Yes they would be a perfect couple. So who set the house on fire?

It was either Tess or one of her cronies. I don't get why she's mad at Demelza; jealously probably. But geeze, the woman is throwing jobs at you. she should be mad at George and go burn his house down.

I actually thought Tess was going to push Demelza off that cliff at the opening of the episode but then Ross appeared. I am curious when Ross asked what Tess wanted Demelza did not tell him the truth. Because Tess is out for Demelza. And now the house is on fire and Ross is not home.

We'll just have to agree to disgaree. I was eager to see the final season of The Poldarks took, but now it's like meh. They've thrown out the books and (except for the Drake/Morwenna plot) are making it up out of whole cloth. Winston Graham wrote a dozen Poldark novels, all of which are very good, and they only made it through about the first four books so far. When the original TV series aired in the late 80's, they tried to do the exact same thing and Graham withdrew his permission to use his characters. That's why TOS stopped at about four seasons. The genius of the original novels was that they stayed grounded in history, so that you felt like you were experiencing the times through the eyes of a real family. All of this taking off for la-la-land with bizarre conspiracy theories is just terrible.
The books jumped ahead a few years after Elizabeth's death and shifted focus onto the younger generation. Jeremy (Ross's son) falls in love with a daughter of the local nobility. She loves him back but won't marry him. Her brother has gambled away the family fortune, and she feels it's her duty to rescue her family by marrying a wealthy man. In emotional agony, Jeremy runs off to join the Army and fight in the Napoleonic War. He and Geoffrey Charles both go to war, and only one of them returns. Back on the homefront, Clowance (Ross's daughter) falls in love with a man that her parents don't like. Being as headstrong as her mother she marries him, anyway, and finds out that maybe she should have listened to her parents. Now THAT'S good writing. Oh, and George Warleggan is meaner and more wicked than ever. He never finds out the real reason for Elizabeth's death, but he can't stand the fact that Ross still has everything George wanted. He and Ross remained enemies throughout most of the books.
And obviously, the Poldark writers didn't see the movie Amazing Grace from a few years back. The abolitionist movement in late 18th century Britain was a Christian movement. It was ordinary Christians (especially women) who led the grassroots campaign, and it's most ardent supporter in Parliament was William Wilberforce, a devout Christian. In fact, one historian said that abolitionists back then were roughly the equivalent of anti-abortion crusaders today. They were seen as religious nuts who wanted to abolish a perfectly respectable institution. Many of the products in British households, such as sugar--and mahogany furniture!--came from slave plantations, so Britons were perfectly happy to turn a blind eye as to how those products were produced. And Lord knows, the slave system generated a ton of money, so the Crown and nobility were perfectly happy with it. Trying to rewrite this history does a tremendous disservice to Wilberforce, who fought for years to end the slave trade and suffered much for it.

I love the durrells but I am getting tired of the whole " let's trick Spiro s wife into adultery so Louisa can be with him". At this point I hope she takes the high road and just goes back home to England at the onset of war.

This Durrells final season is not a happy one is it? Everyone in the family is upset or miserable most of the time. I enjoyed governess Margo with her young charge, but I don't know why (as of the last show) she thinks she has to drop everything, and return to Corfu. I guess she believes she needs to be there in person, to convince everyone to return to England with her?
Anyway, I agree that the nearness of WWII is motivation to change the dynamics for the Durrells in this final season. Darker yes, but each member is still endearing.

I’m so glad Masterpiece has offered this Press mini-series. I binge watched the first 4 episodes and will finish the series Friday. I wonder if there will be a Season 2? I guess it aired on Friday evenings in my area and just finished. Who knew? Thanks again Fanny!

I've searched and searched and am disappointed to say there is no season 2 of Press on Masterpiece. Mike Bartlett's writing was very good, fast paced, covering all angles of photo-journalism. The competition of both magazines was exciting, even the "your sensationalistic and your just as bad" telling of the ruthless truth. I would have loved a season 2, but leaving it to my imagination is acceptable. (I guess). Actors were all very good, fine acting on every level and it was great seeing Alex Weaver (Leonard on Grantchester) as the honest, "man of integrity" reporter. He contrasted and harmonized beautifully with the ruthlessness of other characters. If you have PBS Passport and overlooked the recent release of Press on Masterpiece, I suggest you give it a try. I don't think you will be disappointed. On some PBS stations, it may still be available even without Passport.

Press aired in the UK in the Fall of 2018. There hasn’t been a second series filmed, nor has there been talk of a second series being ordered. So it is quite possible it is a one and done show. Unfortunately as I quite liked it too.

Jane Austin's unfinished novel Sandition comes to Masterpiece: Charlotte Heywood sets her sights on Sanditon… but what will she find there? Starring Rose Williams and Theo James, Sanditon premieres January 12 on MASTERPIECE on PBS.

The Durrells was sad; especially with Gerry and the animals. I wish they had done a flash forward since these were all real people; and told that Gerry became the remembered writer in the family.

Agreed Mina, and since they were all writers, some mention could have been made of the zoo.....and Margo I think had some success running a B&B. Even if they had done a summary at the end of the show as the credits were running. I thought it was a sad season and disappointing series finale.

Next Sunday PBS will air "What the Durrells did Next" (I think is the title) and tell about the real life Durrells (which was a bit different from the series). But, I still feel they should have done a brief afterward of the characters on the show. I mean I cared about Sprio and Theo and Lugretzia, what did the writers envision for them during the war? Instead it was just "bye!" the end. They could have shown an older Gerry sitting to write down his stories about where he grew up to tie it all together. It was a sad season and a sad way to end. What happened to Basil was a shock.

I finally watched this week's Poldark. Snore. I never really cared about Ned but it was sad for Kitty when he died. I'm bored with all the other stories except for Miss mahogany and G. Charles. I'm glad she didn't have to marry George. It was SAVAGE what she and G. Charles planned to disrupt the wedding.

“What the Durrells did Next” was delightful! Larry missing out on a Nobel Prize for writing..... because his books had to much sex. Free spirit Margo running a racy boarding house and then spontaneously running off to work on a Greek Cruise. (So “Margo”!) I loved seeing Gerry’s real life wife Jackie, and later Lee. A beautiful tribute to world renown Zoologist Gerald’s life and work, his years of dedication and revolutionizing conservation and wildlife. His passion for animals, his tribute on This is your Life...beautiful and satisfying conclusion to another great series! Thank you Masterpiece and PBS.

I was disappointed with Poldark all season and the finale was just "eh". A better ending would be if Ross indirectly got scheming Tess a job with George and she tormented him and his uncle daily or something.

I really enjoyed The Chaperone. There should be a feature film of Louise Brooks; she was very interesting. I didn't understand the ending with Norma- she and the German man and his daughter just lived in her family home WITH her husband AND Raymond and Greta and her sons never figured it out or asked questions?

Not sure where you are. On the Buffalo PBS it shows as being on at 9 pm on Christmas Day; not sure how much variation there is between stations as to timings. Description says they are going to the Outer Hebrides - different climate to their African excursion of a couple years back!

Except, when they were actually filming in March, the weather was exceptionally warm. But, the cast is such good actors that we will think it is cold weather. I meant to post the reminder a week ago, but never got to it. I’m looking forward to it! PBS at 9/8 central.

My Early Reminder from PBS: Get ready to visit the finest seaside resort! Sanditon premieres with back-to-back episodes on January 12 at 9/8c on MASTERPIECE on PBS.
Sanditon: An eight-part period-drama adaptation of Jane Austin's final novel, written only months before her death in 1817. Rose Williams and Theo James play the lead characters of Charlotte Heywood and Sidney Parker. The story follows Charlotte as she moves to the quiet fishing village of Sanditon for a fresh start, only to meet Sidney, a charming man who has ambitions to turn the tranquil seaside residence into a luxury resort. Written by Emmy and BAFTA award-winning screenwriter Andrew Davies.
