The royal wedding got me thinking about The Crown and what it must have been like for queen Elizabeth's father, who was the equivalent of Prince Andrew with his two daughters--living a comfortable life mostly out of the public eye--and then was suddenly thrust into being king.
I was thinking that Elizabeth was older than she was when her father became king, but she was only 10, which begs the question: "Given that she was next in line for the throne, why didn't they start immediately educating her so that she would be prepared to take over as monarch should her father die?" He was almost 60 when he died sixteen years after becoming king. That would be plenty of time to teach her everything she needed to know, so why was she (according to the tv show) so woefully unprepared? That doesn't make sense to me.

Interesting comparison, MG, between George VI and Prince Andrew. One thing I've read that MIGHT be the reasoning behind the lack of more education for Elizabeth . . . George and the Queen Mum were still within their fertile years. They might have been trying for a son, who would have gotten the throne instead of Elizabeth under the rules of succession that were then in effect. Even so, it is inexcusable that they didn't provide a better education for Elizabeth as a potential "Plan B."

For those who may be watching "The Crown" . . . Prince Philip for Seasons 5 and 6 will be played by former "Game of Thrones" actor Jonathan Pryce. Meh. He wasn't even on my short list.

Jonathan Pryce is on my list for ANYTHING. I adore him. I think he'll be a terrific Phillip. He's fantastic in everything he does.

I am thrilled to hear about this casting! Pryce and Imelda Staunton, I am doing an internal happy dance. I was very meh on Diana's casting (what I have seen thus far) so this makes up for it to me
