(NOTE: New episode tonight, since the show was pre-empted by the Oscars last night)
Hollywood Week: Genre Challenge - 'Hollywood Week' begins, with some of the most prolific alums in 'American Idol' history. Jordin Sparks, David Cook, Lauren Alaina, and more, return to mentor the contestants. Fan favourites from auditions will take the stage for the 'Genre Challenge.'
Enjoy the show!

I'm loving the mentors being a part of this step. But we haven't seen this first group get anything from Lauren except the initial speech. Maybe they will later....
Mike was awesome! Sorry to hear about his mom being so sick though. Must be stressful.

Ruben!!! He looks GREAT! I'm so impressed. I love his voice, even bought his first album.

This indie folk group cracks me up, saying they're the oddballs, weirdos, etc., and they have the "look." (and a guitar!) It may seem true, but some are really good singers! Fritz has so little confidence, but wow! He was great.
Lee Dewyze was another winner I liked! Good advice to tell them to make the audience FEEL something, be themselves, embrace it. Seems like a good guy.

Ugh, Christian's story!!!! His vision loss starting when he was a baby, being in dark places, getting help and more vision at 13, etc., just makes me cry -- then, he can really SING too! What a guy.
Don't care to see Haley again, but hey, they all can't be my favorites right?

I love this Cole kid, he seems so young and unsure, but I like his voice. He did a great job, much better than his first audition! Not sure what Luke's comment was about, can't always get through on dice rolls?
Can't imagine being the judges and liking contestants personally, but then having to cut them!
And, I'm LOVING seeing David Cook on my screen again. Wish he'd sing for us, but at least they played a little of him in 2008. ❤

LOL, OMG guys, it's the young Pop girls going next!! Squee!!! They're all under 18 in this line. Their long hair, styled almost the same way, and pretty face are deceiving. Some are great singers! Did I miss who their mentor was?

Hmmm, Chayce and Betty make quite a cute couple! I'm not sure if either are single, but that would be a fun duo!! I like his voice. (Nevermind, I saw Betty's wedding pictures online.)
Lauren Alaina is so cute and sweet, she cracks me up. Ryleigh did great.
Noah is a good singer, and his voice is the type that appeals to me. Another WGWG though?

They're barely showing us any other contestants besides the ones they feature. That whole line of people in the last country group got to go through, but who were they? Seems like they're rushing through, and deliberately not showing us things. Even if someone doesn't go through, it's nice to hear them sometimes, and follow them if you like them. That's how I got to know Laine before the season he won.

Ohh sure, it's Jordin doing the Pop genre! She's so sweet.
I don't remember seeing this girl whose dad is a drummer for Red Hot Chili Peppers, before. Must have missed that episode. She sings Roxanne by the Police, which would be much better if she didn't extend every single syllable into a run (or whatever), it took away from the song itself. She has a good voice, but that was annoying.
Oh here comes Sam! Good for him for getting out there and trying something new. It wasn't his best singing, he did better in his first audition, but it was moving. And he's the only one the show decides to show us get cut (that we've had featured). Aww, poor guy.
Now they gave us a glimpse of others we "knew" that were cut. I wish we could've seen what they did and why they didn't make it.

Tristen did a great job this time! He wasn't so wild and over the top, and we got to focus on his voice.

Oh don't tell me poor Douglas will be cut!!
Jacob didn't do that great either this time, but they'll give him a chance and not Douglas? boo
Nicolina's doing well, and I love how the audience/other contestants support each other even though it's a competition. That's so heartwarming.
Phew, they all went through, from the line. Douglas was so relieved.

That "Don't Stop Believing" song the platinum trio sang was less than stellar, to me. None of them sounded superior to the other strong singers, so I wonder if the "regular" contestants were wondering the same thing. Why them? They weren't terrible, but they definitely didn't sound like the best of the best, to me. Maybe it was the song.
They get to choose their partners for the duets first, though, after hearing everyone else sing. Hmm that's an interesting twist. I almost wouldn't want to be chosen, knowing that the judges already think the platinums are the "best." On the other hand, if you're not picked by the "best" what if someone approaches you that you think is NOT good? How do you manage that? Be happy that you can show off and be better, or be scared that the other person will bring you down? Well, at least there aren't super terrible singers this season (SheBangs-level), maybe just others you wouldn't mesh with as well. I like that they get to choose, but it seems that choosing might be tricky. I wouldn't want to hurt anyone's feelings either.
I'm off to watch the show that aired last night. Here, they put the news on first, then Idol, so it was too late for me.

Niccolina… dayum! I like her, kooky Leah, and Emyrson for the girls and Fritz and Noah for the boys based on tonight.

I wasn't a fan of the girl from Nashville that got the platinum ticket and last night proved why. I think the guy was the only one of the three that I really liked. There were so many better singers.

I agree completely and I don’t think it’s fair that they get to pick their duet partner. That wasn’t part of the deal.
