Rock the Block is just a summer show.

Well, they are airing it starting October 21st, so maybe they decided it would do better in the Fall...

Flip or Flop - yuck, it's that Pete DeBest guy again. I just don't like him. The house they did wasn't terrible, just stuck in the 90's...looked very nice when done up in black and white. Loved the herringbone tile on the fireplace.

Did anyone else see Rock the Block last night? In the 1st episode, the ladies had to remodel the master bedroom suite. Leanne was the only one who thought to blow out the wall that went into the garage storage area to make the already fairly large bathroom huge. It looked spectacular, but, for me, it was way over the top. Personally, I am not fond of having the tub and the shower smack dab in the middle of the floor and the first thing you see when you walk in. Tarek was the judge of this episode and gave her the win.

I watched it and enjoyed it. I have to admit that I liked Leanne's master suite more than a little bit. I loved the free standing shower in the middle of the room. I also liked Victoria's black wood accent wall and almost everything about Jasmine's master. I found something in everyone's efforts to enjoy. The Good Bones lady's baby is huge now, and so cute.

Kao, I agree that the winning bathroom was spectacular it is also impractical. Neither the awesome looking shower nor the freestanding tub had any place for "stuff". No place for soap or body wash or bath sponge or washcloth or shampoo or conditioner. No place for a scented candle and a glass of wine and a book. And, that bathroom would quickly lose it's Wow factor if not kept spotlessly clean and uncluttered. If I was looking for a house in that market I would love seeing a master bath that beautiful but my practical side would keep me from ever wanting to own it.

I have to agree, the winning bathroom was beautiful to look at, but impractical to use (I did love the pearly tile she used). There was just nowhere to put things. It needed a shelf or nook or something in that shower. And I didn't like her bedroom, it was too plain and cold for me. But, that's her thing. I liked Mina's rooms, but wasn't a fan of that wallpaper (not a fan of wallpaper in general ).

Plus you have to walk all the way to the back to simply wash your hands. People spend more time at their sinks then they do in their showers or tubs. From the view in the bedroom, it looked like a half a mile walk.

Am I crazy, or did I see a few seconds of an ad promoting a new season of Love It Or List It yesterday? I've looked around the web for news of a premiere date since then but haven't seen anything. And I haven't seen the ad again on HGTV.

I know that Eric the contractor won't be part of the new season, I read about that a month or two ago. I think he's getting his own show somewhere else. But they've really kept quiet about any other details so far.

Rock the Block
A competition show where 4 designers try to add value to builder grade homes.
What I liked: The ladies instead of the Property Brothers or the Property Brothers leading teams of wannabes. A decent renovation budget of $175,000 for each house.
Questions: A builder grade home that costs $750,000?
What I didn't like: Leanne. Leanne's design. Leanne winning.
Why: The brief for this round of the competition was to redesign the master suite which includes the master bedroom, the master bathroom, and the master closet. Leanne completely ignored that the entire master suite needed to be redone and concentrated on the master bathroom. The other ladies followed the brief and tried to upgrade the entire master suite. I do think Jasmine's design with all the mixed materials did not come across well. I have watched her show Hidden Potential and she does a good job of updating homes and making them look unique. Luv'ed Alison Victoria's black feature wall. That is bang for your buck. Mina did a great shower and closet.
While Leanne's bedroom looked pathetic and after thought. A bit of styling would have gone a long way. I hated those barn doors, they looked awful. The bathroom at first glance is a wow moment and would look good on a magazine cover. What was telling was that she could care less about the toilet, I guess she never poops. On second glance of the bathroom, Leanne created this huge space and one step into the bathroom you stub your feet on this bathtub blocking your access to the room. The open double shower looks great at first but where do you hang your towels, where do you put your soaps and shampoo? Again with the vanity where do you plug in your hairdryer, your shaver etc... There simply was no storage in that bathroom and for me it was big fail.

Here's her bath again - nowhere to put anything. No shelves, medicine cabinet, hooks, towel bars, nothing. I've got way too much crap in my bath, I need storage. This is a showpiece, not something to live in.

Flip or Flop - I just did not like the fireplace tile thing she did. And honestly I'm tired of so much black and white cement tile everywhere. But I guess it's popular there. *shrug* Also - Tarek needs to lay off the Botox or whatever he's doing, his face looked weird last night.

This is a showpiece, not something to live in. There are no outlets. How do you brush your teeth (I luv my sonic toothbrush), how do you shave, how do you dry your hair? This bathroom does not work in real life. Are you supposed to parade naked through this bathroom and pose languidly against the walls? Guaranteed someone breaks their toe on the bathtub trying to get to the bathroom in the middle of the night. I thought Alison Victoria was arrogant about her design but Leanne beats AV by a mile. AV spent $7000 on a toilet, Leanne doesn't need a toilet and thinks neither should the homeowner.

I'm glad I was not the only one seeing the flaws in this bathroom! In the still photos on the HGTV page I did notice 2 towel hooks on the outside righthand wall of the shower. But, no toilet!? Or, if there, you have to walk a mile to get to it? Why was Tarek dumb enough not to see the flaws in this design?
The good news is, Leanne spent so much on this she will likely run out of money very quickly!

I have to admit that you guys are right. As lovely as the bathroom was it's just not user-friendly.

She left it plain and didn't update around it much.

I just rewatched the ending, where they showed the money each lady spent. And, I did see that very forgettable toilet "room".
Jasmine spent the least: $25,800. Mina spent $28,750. Alison spent $35,250 (the $7,000 toilet!) and Leanne spent $37,500. I think Alison and Leanne are going to have to really be careful with spending from now on.

That is the most impractical bathroom I have ever seen. Like one for a show house not everyday living.

Considering how there's a 4 month waiting list for their B and B I can see this doing really well. Their fans are legion, and tons of people come to Waco every year now to shop at Magnolia store and market, eat at the restaurant, get goods at the bakery, etc. Might as well get MOAR of their money and provide a place for them to stay! Apparently the Magnolia store has furnishings, etc handpicked by Joanna during her shopping for staging houses that aren't on the website and they ship too, which is nice.

As an avid House Hunters junkie I have a few pet peeves: 1. What is the big deal about double sinks in the bathroom? Nobody has to brush their teeth side by side. If I hear that not having double sinks is a dealbreaker again, I will scream. 2. Those looking for a vintage house but then complain about lack of 'open concept' (another pet peeve) or lack of closet space! Old house were not built like that and if thats what you want you don't want vintage.3. People who tour a newly remodeled house and still want to rip out the kitchen because its not their taste! Such a waste. Just walk away and find a fixer or a kitchen you do like. The term 'total gut job' ARGHHHHHH 4. And the 'ugly Americans' on HHI that complain about room size and other such horrors when looking for a home overseas. Maybe you should stay stateside. I am sure there are more but thats it for now. Still love the show but not always the buyers. That drives me crazy too, they want character and open concept, well then live in a cave.

I've been watching reruns of Hometown in the morning and I really miss them and their style, lol. They really make their town look like a great place to live. Has anyone heard any renewal news?
