The show follows 12 people who are 20 to 61 in their experiences being dropped off on South Pacific islands.
They came with bags that were given to other castaways. The bags have journals telling their stories. There are a couple of family caregivers, questing do gooders, a wandering singer, a young person who lived at a sheltered and an overweight man.
The overweight man saw some one on a neighboring island. He tried to swim across and got caught in a current which carried him to a part of the island with a swanky open air shelter. A day later he met the singer who chose to go off after two days to garner more reality tv exposure to push her career.

I find the show to be interesting, but haven't figured out the purpose. It's not a contest where people are voted out and there is money to be won. They stay on the various islands until they are "rescued" or decide to quit. It was funny that Robbie, the heavy guy, was so happy to have found the singer for company because she was bellowing out "Hello" "Hellooooo", seemingly looking for company as well. He told her all about his abandonment issues. And two days later... she abandons him to go it alone. Of course, none of them are actually 'alone'. They all have at least one cameraman with them at all times. I think it's worth giving it a try, so I'll be watching.

It is part like Naked and Afraid. Hopefully they have equipped everyone with bug spray. They win if they do not tap out. Maybe there is a money pot they divide.

What got me was that she told him she was going off to explore and said she would be back. Why lie about it? It just seemed so mean and inconsiderate.

To me, It's unique. There isn't a competition. It's not really about surviving the elements in harsh environments. It is about 12 people who, in dealing with personal struggles in the real world, choose to be 'marooned' on a series of interconnecting islands. They don't know how long they will be there. Each person is unaware of who else is marooned as they have been stranded individually on different parts of the islands. Also, each participants one suitcase is given to the other castaways. Each suitcase, besides containing personal items, contains personal diary entries. Which is how each participant knows about the others existence. And who that person is, based on their diary entries. A journey like this is not about competition or forming fake alliances. It's not a game. These people are at crossroads in their personal lives-Castaway is about evaluating your life, figuring out how to work with others (or not)and working out where you go in life once you return home.

More like Survivor but without the money. Throw in a bit of Alone. Doesn't seem like Survivor though if you're not voting people out? It's Survivor like as they are abandoning people who don't know each other with limited supplies on a desert island and they still have to be/play the social game with each other or not just like in real life and in Survivor and they still have to battle the elements, make fire and get water.

I really feel sorry for Robbie, the heavy guy. His backstory is sad, and he's really struggling with being alone and deserted by that young girl.
Some of these people really seem to want to be alone and fend for themselves. By getting each other's backpacks, they know others are around, and get a glimpse of who they are by looking through their bags, which is an interesting aspect to the show.
I like how they feature a few people at a time, giving us their backstories, but I am finding it hard to keep track of who is who and what their story was (except for Robbie).
I worry for that Angel guy too.

MrCoz, who never likes reality TV shows, came in as I was watching this. He's hooked. He likes it a lot because there are more real survival elements. He likes that no one is getting voted off. He even asked how one finds about getting on a show like this because he would like it. When he went to Panama he and his buddy explored an uninhabited island and found an abandoned canoe and found parrots nesting under it.

I actually like the time they spend on "backstories." One of my frustrations with Survivor is that it has evolved into a majority of healthy, "hot" young people whom (rumor has it) are found in bars by production assistants who then invite them to be on the show. The earlier seasons featured people who applied (some multiple times) and wanted the experience. The newer seasons have had a lot of people who just want to be on TV in bikinis/boxers. And we know nothing of these Survivor contestants except brief bios.
The folks on "Castaways" seem to be more like "us" . . . real people with real struggles.
And I love that the young woman came back for Robbie.

All the ladies were attractive, but mostly all were 'real', ie. no post surgery body parts. Not that I'm judging! I have to catch up on this show!

There were two episodes on tonight, but I missed part of the first one. WHY did Matt go back to those two guys who didn't want him? I can't believe how badly they treat him, like he's an intruder on THEIR camp, eating their food, etc. Didn't they all get stranded on their own? So they decided to let each other "in" but no one else, and they treat everything they found as all theirs. Then they had that conversation about realizing they were isolating him, and they felt bad about it, but still kicked him out of … what, their group, their camp, their friendship? Mean guys. I felt for Matt, because he really was trying, and he always felt not quite good enough. He really handled it well, considering how they treated him, I would've been a lot more angry. I can't stand Sawyer and Richard now for being jerks. But I still wonder WHY Matt went back to them at all. Robbie looks like he's considering leaving!! No!! He's been such a great inspiration, really helping keep the young girl going, and helping Matt too. I hope he sticks it out; I don't want him to be so sad and discouraged now. I don't know how it ends, but I have seen pictures of Robbie now, and he's so much slimmer - - it's amazing! Good for him. Wow. Terri looks like she might get some visitors: she might have to share her snacks! It would serve them right for her to treat those boys like she was doing them some huge favor by rationing them a tiny bite of a granola bar. Like that little sip left in the glass that Matt got, and rec'd a hard time about finishing, when the boys each had a full swig. I hope Terri's okay, she's been alone for a long time and is starting to break down. Stuck in the same camp for weeks. Tomorrow night's the finale, so I guess we'll see how this all ends. I've enjoyed this show.

Good to know the finale is tonight
I have a better impression of the singer than I first did. I think she might make an ok friend.
I felt that the blonde was missing important time with her mother being on this show.

I saw a picture Matt posted with Robbie (wish I knew how to share it here). Robbie looked AMAZINGLY good!

I've been watching... really enjoying the slow moving quality of this show. Great for winding down at night. I like the editing with the journal text and piano music - it's very relaxing to watch.
I agree with you guys about Matt! Okay, I understand that he returned to the "mean guys" camp because he said he would, but why did he stay so long? He was so clearly never welcome there while Kensie and Robbie welcomed him with open arms and he would've had a nice experience there. (That said, Matt did come across as a bit lazy and entitled, but who knows what the editing did.) I also couldn't believe how mean the girl from Hawaii and the military guy were to Eric when he was alone and needing help! They didn't welcome him and it made me really sad to watch. People's true colors really come out in a situation like this...
Naked and Afraid with clothes (and some more random supplies!) is a good way to put it! They all seem to be struggling with emotional issues and needed some time away to reassess their lives.

I enjoyed the show as well. This was a life-changing experience for several of the participants. Here's an interesting article about Robbie. Prepare to have your mind blown when you see the picture at the end of the article.

Wow, what a change!! Good for Robbie!! I found the show's ending by 'rescue' very satisfying. And, yes, I cried.

Just watched it, agree it was definitely satisfying. I wish Terry had stayed to meet up and depart with the rest of the group though! She was a trooper there alone... I wonder if she had her DNA tested to see if she would develop Alzheimers too.
Robbie and Kenzie were the most awesome team. I bet they'll be lifelong friends and check in with each other for years to come. :-)

We finally had time to watch the finale. Absolutely loved this show. Robbie and Kenzie are amazing examples of how kindness. Their kindness over and over helped others in turn to be more kind. We were so glad to see all of them growing and maturing from this experience. Too bad Terry couldn't last just 3 (4?) more days. Kudos to her for sticking it out by herself most of that time.
Any news if there will be a second season?
