From time to time, I'll see an actor from a long-cancelled soap and want to post about it, but it feels silly to start a whole thread for that show just to say, "Hey! I saw so-and-so on [insert show name]." SO, consider this the thread to talk about all soaps that are no longer on the air - news, memories, interviews, etc.
For fans of All My Children, Tonya Pinkins, aka Livia Frye, is now on Fear the Walking Dead, playing a baddie. Articles/interviews about her casting on the show all mention her impressive Broadway career, but I always remember her on AMC.
Does anyone else remember Sunset Beach? I spent WAY too much time over the last day watching clips on YouTube. God, I loved Ben ( ) and Meg. I never understood why Clive Robertson didn't go on to be a big star.

Some of my favorite soaps go way, way back! My top favorites are/were: 'Another World' - 'One Life to Live' - 'Days of Our Lives' - and General Hospital' (and its' spinoff, 'Port Charles'). Even now, I still watch and love GH, and I frequently check in on Days. And like Critical, I always enjoy seeing these familiar faces on other shows. I also enjoy the 'shock' of seeing how old some of these folks currently look, after we first knew them in their youthful heyday, which was many years ago. And that goes for visiting older celebrities too, who join soaps or do short cameo roles. (Probably cause it lessens the shock of my own aging!!! )

I happened to turn on the TV while I was on the phone yesterday and B&B was on. I saw at least three actors who'd been on other soaps that I watched. That was in just 5 minutes. With only 4 soaps left, it's not surprising to find familiar faces on other shows. There are only so many options! The other day, I found this interview with Susan Lucci. I think I was wondering what Walt Willey is up to now and ended up finding this interview. I always loved WW and SL together. Skip to just after the 10:00 mark for Walt www.youtube.com/watch?v=6S4E1qVYSx4One of the things I've always liked about Nathan Fillion is that he never tries to sweep his time on OLTL under the rug like some actors do - as if it's something to be embarrassed about. He always says that his time on that show taught him so much and he credits those actors for helping him learn the ropes. I liked also that, when he starred on Castle, he made sure lots of soap actors were cast in guest roles.
I grew up on ABC soaps. My mom watched OLTL and GH on her lunch break when both were only 30 minutes. As a kid, my babysitter watched AMC when we were there for lunch. At one point, I think I was watching ABC soaps from about 11:00 until 3:30! For a while, before Ryan's Hope and Edge of Night were cancelled, IIRC, it was RH, Loving, All My Children, One Life to Live, General Hospital, and EON . During the summer, my days were SET!
I never saw him on Guiding Light or As the World Turns, but Tom Pelphrey is a former soap actor who's really killing it on "regular" TV. He was awesome as a former neo Nazi turned sheriff on Banshee and, even though Iron Fist isn't such a great show, he's been really good in it, especially the second season.

The only one I really, really got into was Days of Our Lives back in the 80's and early 90's. I was all about some Patch and Kayla back then. I'm trying to remember why I lost interest...I know I hated the Billie character they brought in to cause drama with Bo and Hope. Ugh.

When I was really little, I would be home with my mother and she would watch General Hospital, so I have flashbacks of the show from the early 70s in my head. Then later, during summers off from school, my older sisters were heavily into All My Children so I got caught up in that for a couple of years -- when Chuck rescued Donna from her life as a prostitute and married her, to Phoebe's objections of course. Then for a short time in the early 90s, I was laid off and unemployed, and I got back into General Hospital and One Life To Live. This was when Ryan Philippe was on OLTL as a teen who was struggling with his sexuality. Such a fuss was raised about that storyline, and we didn't even have the internet back then to talk about it 24/7. But then i got a job around the same time Philippe left the show, so it all timed out well.

And then Jack and Jennifer! For me, Days lost my interest when the Marlena being possessed thing went on so long. I could handle Roman dying and coming back multiple times, but those possessed yellow eyes of Marlenas? Ugh!

^^^ I watched Days for a while because my bff loved it, but that's exactly when I stopped watching. I never was much of a fan of Deidre Hall (my friend's husband worked for her husband for a time - oh, the stories!), but that storyline was worse than usual. I tapped out on that one.
I remember that summer back in the 80s when Luke and Laura were on the island. IIRC, they showed that storyline on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, so we all would hop out of the pool at 2pm on those days and pile onto the couch for that hour.

I watched As the World Turns religiously until 5 years or so before it was cancelled. When I was younger, I watched Y&R and B&B for a little while. My college roommate got me on to All My Children in the late 80's and I watched that until the end.
One of my uncle's many wives (it was only one at a time) got me started on GH when Luke and Laura were getting together. I think the first episode I watched was when Luke and Laura jumped off of Frank Smith's yacht. I was hooked immediately. I have gone for a period here and there where I didn't watch, like the period when there was nothing going on beyond the relish wars.
I also watched Santa Barbara for a little while and Loving.
I miss all of the soaps so much.

I grew up on all the ABC soaps. Loving, All My Children, One Life to Live especially. Fun fact. Before I was born, my mom had graduated high school at 17 in 1976 and moved to NYC to fulfill her dream of being on Broadway. Her brother seven years older than her already lived out there and was a trumpet player trying to make his own living so she stayed with him. Because she was still 17, she lied about her age in order to get auditions. She went to many auditions for anything in order to try and get her foot in the door. One of the auditions she got lucky with was due to a casting director saw her standing outside of a deli and she was able to audition for a role on All My Children in 1976. She was told it was going to be a small role that might turn into a big character down the line. She said it was her and several other ladies that kept getting called back and she ended up being offered the role for Brooke English. But a few days later lost the gig because of her age. My mom always talked about the job that got away. The role she lost ended up eventually going to Julia Barr, which was one of the ladies my mom auditioned with. Funny how life turns out.

GREAT IDEA FOR A THREAD Critical My first SOAP was RYAN's HOPE........OMGosh, I LOVED that SOAP!!! I could not wait day to day to catch the next episode. Sad when it ended. DELIA was a piece of work and I loved everything about Mary. (I loved seeing DELIA when she showed up yearssss later on GH)!!!! Then my BFF and I had our babies together and we spent all our time together and BFF was totally into every Soap on ABC. So our days were AMC, OLTL, and GH. I do not remember her liking or interested in RH or Loving. But I watched those as well!!! But basically, at some different points in my life I watched many many Soaps.....not necessarily from the beginning but "hit or miss" viewing!! I loved watching ANOTHER WORLD esp Anne Heche, who was not known at all but her acting as Marly and Vicky was outstanding!!! I watched bits and pieces of AS THE WORLD TURNS back in the day and loved Maura West then and now she is Ava Jerome on GH!!! I enjoyed SB, Critical but I barely remember it now.......I do not think it lasted long? I watched LOVING as well and I can remember thinking......wow, a SOAP I am watching from the VERY FIRST EPISODE!!! Later on like around 1988 I got hooked on everything CBS, The Bold and The Beautiful and The Young and The Restless!! I basically left ABC!!! To those who watch DAYS.....wow, so many actors from back in the day are always coming back to DAYS!!! Its really exciting when they do that for us OLD TIME VIEWERS!!! Oh Lord, how sad is my post here..........appears my life centered around SOAP OPERAS!!!!!!!!!!

I remember sick days as a kid, being home from school and watching tv with my Mom. We'd start out with The Price Is Right and we'd watch tv together straight through until 4 o'clock. My personal favorite was always As The World Turns and I faithfully watched it up until the very end. Guiding Light was another good one .... during high school, if I didn't hang around after my last class, I could get home in time to see the last half hour.
I like this thread. When I see someone "familiar" it will bug me until I can figure out who they were. I do occasionally watch General Hospital to catch a glimpse of Roger Howarth (he was Paul Ryan Stienbeck on ATWT) but I just can't get into it on a regular basis. I think there are far more people I'd like to see again who are not on tv than the other way around.

Did anyone else watch The Story of Soaps on ABC last night? If you were a soap fan from the early days, especially, I highly recommend it. Since it was on ABC, the focus was more on ABC soaps, but there was definitely footage and discussion of other soaps as well. Kind of a bummer to relive the decline of soaps (Thanks, OJ ), but there were SO many clips of things that I'd forgotten. Lots of interviews with various actors, writers, journalists, producers, etc. about soaps. Really fun, even though it made me miss the good old days when there were HOUR of soaps on ever day.

I watched it and I loved it! I recorded it thinking it would be one of those things I watched a segment or two and then deleted, but I watched the entire thing. I thought they did such a great job of explaining how the storytelling evolved and why, the impact that soaps had on stories they told, and the influence they had on other types of programming. I had not thought about the rise of nighttime soaps coming from women entering the workplace, but it made total sense.
It also made me really wish that in this time that networks are challenged with programming and production that they'd bring back some weeks of rerunning some of the classic times of the past. I would certainly watch a month of the Liz Taylor summer of General Hospital!

I would certainly watch a month of the Liz Taylor summer of General Hospital! I'd love a summer of Luke & Laura on the run - both at Beecher's Corner and on the island. That was appointment TV when I was a kid. I remember that the island story line aired on MWF, so I'm sure the ratings were higher on those days. We'd all pile out of the pool and crowd around the TV at 2:00 for our L&L fix. Nothing like that any more.
I thought the special was well done, although I really didn't care about the reality TV aspect. Did NOT need to hear Andy Cohen's opinion on anything.
Sad to see so many actors in those clips who have passed. The showed that classic shot of Grandma Kate in the kitchen really got me misty. And Fra Heflin, James Mitchell, Ruth Warrick, David Canary, John Beradino, Emily McLaughlin....so many classic soap actors actors who've since passed. Yeah, I went through some Kleenex watching that special!

I thought the reality elements were relevant because of the point being made that reality TV did kind of replace soaps. But I agree with you that Andy is not enough of an expert on soaps to have been featured as much as he was. He's a fan ... that's it.
I also really liked the way they edited the segment that led into the rise of reality TV - where they combined scenes from Pedro on Real World with scenes from the Robin and Stone storyline. That they could do that and have it not seem cheesy shows just how well done the whole Robin and Stone story line was.

I mean, I understand why they included the stuff about reality TV, but I just didn't want it taking time from the soap stuff. The freaking Kardashians the stupid housewives are ubiquitous. It's like you can't get away from them.
I did like how they handled Pedro's story and the Robin/Stone/HIV story on GH.

I really welcomed Andy Cohen's presence and comments! I think he has a lot of credibility in the world of tv, as he was a producer and an executive producer on CBS for many years before he became one of the most prominent figures of reality tv. I'm sure he had a wealth of knowledge and experiences to draw from, and if anyone has read his books (which are taken from his personal diaries, that he's kept over the course of many years), he has tons and tons of anecdotes that are both interesting and informative (and many of which are totally hilarious).

Did anyone watch Reunion Road Trip last night on E!? They reunited a bunch of actors from All My Children. It was awesome!
Eva LaRue (Maria), Jacob Young (AJ), Cameron Matthison (Ryan) and Rebecca Buddig (Greenlee) all reunited in person and then they Zoomed with some other cast members and had pre-taped clips from others.
It was so fun to see everyone and hear them talk so lovingly about a show I loved so much.
The only thing that bothered me is that they didn't acknowledge the Prospect Park reboot of the series. They kept talking about how the show ended with a cliffhanger and we never knew who JR shot.....only we did find out who got shot when the show re-started. They kept talking about what a mystery it was, but it WASN'T!
I watched it OnDemand, but I think it's going to re-air Monday late (I think it was 11:59).

I've never watched The Young and the Restless, but I've been watching Evil Lives Here on max and just saw the episode with Thom Bierdz (aka Phillip Chancellor III) and OMG, that story! His younger brother, who struggled with mental illness, beat their mother to death with a baseball bat. Then, and this isn't covered in the show, his other brother died by suicide. It's just horrible. I'm pretty sure it happened when he was still on Y&R. I didn't watch the show, but I definitely read Soap Opera Digest back then. I wonder if they ever did a story about this or if that was just too dark for that mag. It was a pretty upsetting story, but the episode was really well done. Even though I didn't want Y&R, I immediately recognized his name. The episode is from 2018. Did anyone else know about this? www.investigationdiscovery.com/crimefeed/murder/exclusive-video-soap-star-thom-bierdz-on-when-his-brother-killed-their-mom
