An old tape shows Clarke trying to destroy the artifact but failing. Cleo inspires Hope and Alaric: Hope to astral project into the prison world to make a deal with the Necromancer which would destroy Malivore, and Alaric to make an excursion to Triad's old headquarters to find out what they knew about the artifact. In the prison world, a monster capable of entering the astral plane bites Hope. When approached by Landon and Josie, Wade reveals that the monster is a Berbalang from Filipino legend (adapted by Dungeons and Dragons) which replicates through physical contact. After a conversation with her subconscious (which manifests as Dark Josie), Josie takes back her magic and enchants a pearl-bladed dagger, which she and Landon use to bring Hope back. Alaric finds out the artifact was created by Leonardo da Vinci. Lizzie and MG discover that Finch unwittingly killed her grandfather when she became a werewolf. Kaleb opens up to Cleo and Cleo agrees to go out with him. Hope and Josie reconnect. Perturbed by Landon's odd behavior, Wade tells Hope he suspects that there's something wrong with Landon.

“Hope’s suspicion is piqued after Wade shares some startling news with her; to uncover the secrets of a mysterious artifact, Alaric must work with an enemy from his past; MG is forced to make a difficult decision.”

Cleo invites first Kaleb and then Josie to enter her mind to see if she's malevolent. They learn how she sacrificed herself to Malivore and how she was trapped in a cave alone with him for centuries before she finally managed to trap him in a vessel she controlled and escaped. Alaric releases Cleo after learning that Cleo was trying to get Hope to kill Malivore and that for Malivore to be defeated, Hope would have to die. Hope struggles to reconnect with the recently returned Landon, which triggers her anxieties even as his erratic behavior leads to him beating up a former bully at Mystic Falls High. Landon finally reveals he learnt to fight and kill to protect himself in the prison world and he and Hope take down Malivore's vessel together. The artifact gets destroyed in the scuffle. Hope confesses that she doesn't want to become a full Tribrid but Landon is convinced that it's bound to happen and they're doomed to destroy each other no matter what they do. He breaks up with Hope and leaves for the bus station, where he meets and bonds with Cleo. Finch fits in well with Jed and the pack and decides to stay with Josie at the Salvatore School as girlfriends.

In tonight’s episode of Legacies, Rick doesn’t know what to do with Cleo. He wants to be her back in the artifact. Kaleb wants to talk to her before she goes.

Hope visits with Landon. Jo brings Finch to breakfast at school. Finch is nervous. She is a loner and won’t fit in. Hope brings Landon breakfast. He has been a little jumpy since living in the prison world. She has a lot of questions. Meanwhile, Kaleb also wants answers from Cleo. She would rather show him, transporting him back to Nigeria when she was younger.

Kaleb watches her as a young girl talking to her grandmother about being a witch and how the village is being threatened by a monster. Her mom must go to protect them all. Cleo cries. Kaleb comforts the young Cleo who then offers herself to the monster. Kaleb is in disbelief.

Not acting like himself, Landon attacks a former bully. Hope walks up just as Landon is punching the boy in the face at school.

Kaleb begs Rick not to put Cleo back in the artifact. Rick tells him he needs to look into this. She could be lying. They decide to find an impartiality person to decide. Rick heads to see Jo for help.

Landon reveals to Hope that he had to fight for his life every day. She also learns he has been back a lot longer than she knew. Meanwhile, Jo meets with Cleo.

Cleo pulls Jo into her past. She shows her what it was like living with Malivore. She shows her how she helped him get into a vessel. She wanted her freedom and she got it. She had control over him.

Landon tells Hope he was protecting her and that is why he stayed away. He also had to learn more about Cleo. Meanwhile, Jo tells Rick not to condemn Cleo. She has been through so much.

Landon and Hope realize they are not alone. A monster comes out behind a tree. They try and fight him. Rick visits with Cleo. She shows him how she made a monster and how she has made many.

Landon and Hope manage to take out the monster. Back at school, Cleo tries to explain to Rick how she tried to protect them all but was forced to make decisions she didn’t like. Rick decides that Cleo must decide her own fate. She definitely cannot try to kill Hope again if she decides to stay.

Jo returns to find Finch making friends and kicking ass with the wolf pack in the gym. Jo tells her how she learned she is somewhat spoiled. She shouldn’t have pressured Finch into coming to the school. Finch tells her she wants to. She also wants to be her official girlfriend. Jo kisses her.

Landon tells Hope he is done with her. They cannot be together. They are doomed. He is the son of Malivore and she is the one who is supposed to kill him. Landon leaves. Hope is upset.

Rick tells Kaleb that Cleo has left. He needs to know if she really liked him. Meanwhile, Cleo and Landon end up at the same bus stop. He offers her help in killing Malivore.

Hope struggles to control her negative emotions and Josie, to help her, convinces her to accompany Josie to the wellness retreat Lizzie is attending. Alaric and Dorian search for MG, who has been missing for a few days. At the Salvatore school, Finch confronts Jed and challenges him to become Alpha since she is fed up with the oppressive rules of the pack; but instead of the usual fight to the death between wolves, Finch proposes a game of pool, and Jed accepts without thinking twice. Ultimately Finch, seeing how much Jed cares about his pack, decides to let him win. Josie and Hope arrive at the witches's wellness retreat and begin to suspect that it is a cult; these suspicions are confirmed by Lizzie, who discovers her "inner peace" is a result of a magical drug, developed by Triad, that removes the negative emotions of witches so they can be controlled. Andi, a witch pretending to be an empath who is running the "retreat", had been freed from Triad on the condition she perform a ritual that needs the magic of several witches and a human sacrifice. After her defeat by Hope, Josie, and Lizzie – during which the three end up overdoing on the drug – Andi decides to complete the spell by sacrificing herself, leaving the three witches hallucinating they are pandas.

Cleo and Landon rob a museum and steal an artifact from Leonardo da Vinci, which she melts down and combines with a vial of Hope's blood in an attempt to kill Malivore. After Alaric hears about their messy actions, he sends MG and Kaleb to cover their tracks. Hope teams with a now human Clarke, feeling she has no other choice to defeat Malivore. Hope leaves Josie and Lizzie at a gas station and are brought back to school by Ethan, who Lizzie later gives a tour of the school to while setting him up with Hope. Hope uses a Locater Spell to find Landon and Cleo. She takes Cleo out to discuss their plans to defeat Malivore, while Landon and Clarke are left to discuss their father. When Hope returns, she finds Clarke bleeding out from a wound to his neck but is able to save his life. After cleaning up the museum mess, MG and Kaleb save a man from a fire, realizing they can use their powers like superheroes and do good. Outside the hotel, Landon tells Cleo he had hoped it would not come to this. As Alaric pulls up, he sees Cleo being eaten by Landon. Alaric shoots Malivore, subsiding him. Hope and Alaric realize that this is not Landon, it never has been, and that Landon has been Malivore all along. Hope visits Clarke in the hospital and tells him Malivore has been hiding in plain sight, while promising to take down Malivore once and for all. Ethan asks Lizzie out. Hope, Alaric, and the Super Squad confront Malivore and tell him they want their friends back, while he replies that there's something he wants too.

Legacies Recap: Did Hope Finally Go Full Tribrid in Season 3 Finale?

Legacies closed out its third season on Thursday with a pair of unlikely team-ups, the start of a new relationship, and an abrupt ending that probably had a lot of viewers wondering, “Wait, was that really the finale?”

The season’s final hour began with Landon helping Cleo swipe a sculpture from her ex-boyfriend’s art exhibit — that ex, of course, being Leonardo da Vinci. (Real talk: I know that this show revels in its own absurdity, but Cleo’s genuine relationship with da Vinci somehow feels like its most ridiculous twist of all. Like, that fight between Krampus and Santa Claus doesn’t even register in comparison.)
 
Anyway, Cleo melted her work of art down into a fine goo, which she combined with a stolen vial of Hope’s blood to complete her Malivore entrapment spell… only it didn’t work for some reason. After a bit of bonding — you know, swapping stories about their days as Malivore’s prisoner, yadda yadda yadda — Cleo was convinced that she could trust Landon, infusing him with the inspiration he needed to take down dear old daddy.

Elsewhere, Hope ditched Josie and Lizzie after they made it clear that they were never going to team up with Clarke. The way Hope saw it, joining forces with Landon’s brother was her only shot at defeating Malivore, aside from going full tribrid — and as we all know, that’s a hard Plan B. Hope was surprised to discover that Clarke had become human, and she was even more surprised by how adamant he was that she and Landon are still “destined” to end up together. Frankly, I never pegged Clarke for a ‘shipper, much less a “Lope” fan.

Hope and Clarke’s search for the Malivore portal led them straight to Cleo and Landon’s hotel room. And because this is The CW, she arrived just in time to see them staring into each other’s eyes — context be damned. Things went from bad to “oh, s–t!” when it was revealed that “Landon” was actually Malivore, which Hope didn’t figure out until after he absorbed Cleo and put Clarke in the hospital.

Clarke reminded Hope that despite feeling like she’ll be facing Malivore alone, she still has her friends and family in her corner. And that’s exactly who was standing by Hope’s side when she confronted Malivore in the episode’s final moments. “We want our friends back,” Hope told him, to which he replied, “There’s something I want, too. Fate’s a bitch, isn’t it?”

The… end? Sadly, yes. As showrunner Brett Matthews explained in a tweet earlier today, this episode is the “unintentional” season finale. Additional episodes were filmed — in fact, Thursday marked the show’s final day of production before going on hiatus — but they will be held for Season 4 this fall.

Also worth discussing…

Legacies Recap* Lizzie inexplicably decided that it was her and Josie’s “sacred duty” to find a rebound guy for Hope, lest she once again try to get back with Landon. And Lizzie saw no need to be picky. To quote her, “anyone who won’t dissolve into a puddle of goo when they have sex will do.” Enter Ethan, who just so happened to bump into the Saltzman sisters while they were hashing out the probability of fixing Hope’s fractured love life.

Unfortunately, Hope wasn’t the girl Ethan had his eye on. “I’m kind of into someone else,” he told Lizzie after a night of tossing the ol’ pig skin around on the wickery field. “Whoever she is, she doesn’t hold a candle to Hope Mikaelson,” she replied — a sentence I never thought I’d hear her say. Like, ever. And much to the surprise of absolutely no one, Ethan’s real crush ended up being Lizzie.

Legacies Recap* MG and Kaleb took a brief detour on their hunt for Cleo and Landon in order to help the victims of a nasty car wreck. Legacies is really leaning into the idea of these vampires moonlighting as full-blown superheroes, which I do enjoy, but my heart also breaks for poor Kaleb. If he hadn’t stopped to save those people, he might have made it to Cleo in time to keep her from getting nom-nom-nom’d by Malivore.

* In happier couple news, Josie and Finch had a very mature conversation towards the end of the finale. Finch explained that coming from a family who hid her true nature makes her especially sensitive to secrets. So Josie came clean about everything — and I mean everything — that has happened to Ethan because of their magic. No wonder Josie spent the entire hour worrying about Ethan getting hurt again. He’s always getting hurt!

In a flashback, Cleo watches her grandmother perform a powerful transfusion spell to transfer a poison from an infected warrior into someone who is immune. Cleo's powers give Hope that memory and Hope recruits the Super Squad (minus Lizzie) to use the spell to transfer Landon into Clarke's body, thus freeing him from Malivore, while Lizzie goes on her date with Ethan, volunteering at a fundraiser for the school. Clarke initially refuses to help the Squad, but finally agrees out of a desire for revenge. Hope is unable to complete the spell in a simulation in the therapy box eleven times; Josie warns her that she can't focus on the spell if she's worrying about Landon, and takes her place when they finally perform the spell. Malivore subverts the spell and transfers a Dybbuk into Clarke, who attacks the fundraiser, knocks Ethan out and kidnaps Lizzie. MG takes Ethan back to the school, while Kaleb shows up to rescue Lizzie. Kaleb momentarily lets his guard down, but Hope arrives, rescues Lizzie and transfers the Dybbuk out of Clarke. Back at the school, Malivore manipulates Alaric into letting him go with Ethan, who he converts into a drone. Hope learns of Alaric and Kaleb's deception regarding Landon.

Hope awakens in Limbo, where she is asked to give her necklace to cross over into Peace. She finds Ted, who cannot remember if Klaus will find peace if she does. Hearing this, she forgoes peace, waking up as a vampire. Ethan and Kaleb have been turning townspeople into Malivore drones, which Alaric has to fight. Ethan now has supernatural powers – invisibility, strength, and teleportation. Possessed by Malivore, Ethan almost kills MG until he is saved by Lizzie. Hope feeds off Alaric, completing her transition into the tribrid. Hope makes a blade of her solidified blood to kill Malivore, but as she prepares to do so, Malivore returns control of Landon's body to Landon and he and Hope share a final goodbye. Malivore attempts to fool Cleo into providing him an escape but she outwits him and is rescued by Josie. Hope seemingly kills Landon, ending Malivore; Landon finds himself in Limbo with Ted, who reminds him that they have both found their way out of worse situations. Both Ethan and Kaleb retain their Malivore-granted powers, with Kaleb remaining part dragon. Overwhelmed by having had to kill Landon, Hope turns off her emotions and calls Alaric to meet her. She tells him she does not want anyone looking for her and approaches him menacingly.

Cleo and the Super Squad work toward helping Hope but they find that every one of their simulation attempts failed. Lizzie finds a spell in Alaric's journals meant to resurrect someone using a human sacrifice and tries to talk Josie into helping her with the spell but fails to do so. She almost completes the spell but cannot go through with it. The Super Squad works on their teamwork out in the field but Kaleb decides to take matters into his own hands and loses control of his powers when Jed provokes him. Hope finds Clarke and tries to find the originators of the Triad bloodlines (one witch, werewolf, and vampire) and attempts to turn Clarke over to the dark side. Hope sets a monster free ("Argus") and the Salvatore School receives a call from Clarke warning them about Hope. Cleo finds that her stake that can kill Hope. Clarke reveals his secret life to his new girlfriend, Trudy, and surprisingly, she seems interested to know more. Landon and Ted prepare to head to Peace and are greeted by Alaric's arrival.

In the therapy box, Josie and Hope are surgical interns at the Mikaelson Memorial Hospital, an analogue of the Salvatore School. Josie secretly struggles with the expectations of her family, friends and superiors, while Hope seems to be perfect even under the most intense pressure. But one day, Hope makes a terrible mistake in the OT; Josie and Hope's superior diagnoses Hope with CMT and states his intention to fire Hope. Desperate to protect Hope, feeling the hospital would lose "the best of us", Josie goes behind her superior's back and uses an attending physician's access card to retrieve a report signed by her father stating that Klaus did not have CMT. Since CMT is passed down from father to daughter, this proves Hope couldn't have CMT, but while Josie manages to get her superior to agree to keep Hope as an intern, she gets fired instead for going behind her superior's back to access the report. Josie discovers CMT medication in Hope's locker and confronts Hope, who reveals that Alaric cleared Klaus because he knew Klaus would be an enormous asset to the hospital, just like Josie knew losing Hope would hurt the hospital immensely. Hope states her intention to ask the board to reinstate Josie, but Josie realizes that even Hope isn't perfect under the pressure and the pressure is making Hope lose sight of who she is, which is what Josie fears will happen to her if she stays. Josie's experience in the therapy box indicates that she must figure out this next chapter of her life alone, which is confirmed by the anguished look she displays when Finch says she never wants Josie to leave her like that again. In Limbo, Alaric tries to make amends to people he's hurt in order to get a coin, but fails. Ted suggests he make amends to the only person he's hurt who's likely to forgive him i.e. Landon. This leads to Alaric getting a coin and the three lost souls plotting to steal the boat from Charon and make their way back to the land of the living. Meanwhile, Hope tracks down and swiftly dispatches the witch and werewolf members of the Triad, but the vampire - Aurora - outsmarts Hope, Freaky Friday-ing them. Hope leaves in anger while Aurora smugly congratulates herself. At the school, Cleo refuses to inspire Lizzie with a way to take down Hope; she keeps the possibility of a stake from the tree Hope and the twins planted possibly being fatal to Hope a secret and even burns the tree down, but Lizzie finds out anyway and fashions a stake from the ashes. The last scene of the episode shows Lizzie sharpening the stake in preparation for confronting Hope.

Hope visits Vardemus, hoping he will destroy the artifact she has placed Lizzie in (who she is trying to kill). Vardemus realizes the artifact has ties to the Gods. He then tricks Hope, placing her into a chambre de chasse. He awakens Lizzie and she feeds off him. Lizzie tries to kill Hope but realizes she can’t because she’s sired to her. The trio finds that one of Vardemus’ students, Jen, is stealing the artifact. Hope confronts her but she flies away, and they realize she’s a God. Ben tells Jed his story: he is a God who was estranged from his father. When his boyfriend became ill, he begged his father to save him, but he refused. He stole the fire (magic) from the Gods to save him, but it was too late. Magic was released into the world, and he was cursed. Cleo creates a band that will protect Ben. Hope tells Lizzie she must come with her to take down Aurora, realizing that she’s become careless and especially now that she’s up against Gods. Jed tells Ben he realizes Ben is Prometheus and that he wants him to stay at school, with him. Alaric, Ted, and Landon head to the clocktower where they find a genie and ask him for three wishes.

Hope and Lizzie track down and capture Aurora. Hope uses methods that get increasingly violent to extort the information she wants about the Gods out of Aurora, but each of her attempts fails; Lizzie gets progressively more disgusted with Hope's methods and her natural empathy shows strongly as she pushes back against Hope's methods and attempts to treat Aurora with compassion, resulting in Aurora telling Lizzie everything she knows, although under the impression that Lizzie is her brother Tristan. Ultimately, Lizzie frees herself of the sire bond and escapes with Aurora; she bonds with Aurora over their shared experience of being treated as unstable and dangerous because of bipolar disorder and asks for her help in locating the God Vulcan, who can manipulate time and who Lizzie notes can possibly bring them back to a time with Tristan alive and her life not in shambles, who she knows as Jen. Meanwhile, the Jinni grants Landon and Alaric's wishes, resulting in Alaric coming out of his coma and Landon staying in Limbo with Ted, who is the Necromancer again. Hope starts to feel her humanity slowly coming back due to Lizzie's efforts to get through to her, and lashes out, killing a man who nearly hit her with his car.

Jen reveals that her family, the Gods, treated her terribly, and her father, their king, Ken, cast her out. But the Gods' power came from belief, and they faced a mortal threat in Malivore, who could make the world forget them. Jen locked them in sarcophagi and planned to leave the key with Ben because she trusted him. But she was forced to abandon him when she realized the Gods wouldn't be neutralized unless the key was in Malivore with Ben. She says that Chronos, the God of Time, was a better God. Lizzie and Aurora decide to wake Chronos up, and they abduct Ben. Vardemus helps the Squad wargame a battle against the Gods, but Hope's conscience forces her to realize that they'll lose unless she turns her humanity back on. A final simulation with Hope's humanity on is a success. But the struggle between Hope and her conscience comes to a head and she screams at her friends to stop her when she realizes she's about to kill them. Alaric snaps her neck and locks her in the werewolf transition cell before making a call. In Limbo, Landon and the Necromancer are taken captive by bandits.
