Gonna be a bad weather day for the Golden State today. Silvertide is a rock band from Philadelphia, formed in 2001. After completion of their debut album in 2003, they hit the road and toured straight until 2006, most notably in support of Van Halen, Velvet Revolver, and Mötley Crüe in the summer of 2004, and Alter Bridge in 2005. In 2005 M. Night Shyamalan featured their music in his film Lady in the Water. Featured on the soundtrack were their covers of Bob Dylan’s “Maggie’s Farm” and “It Ain’t Me, Babe” Show and Tell is their debut album. It seems to also be their only album. It was released in 2004. This song was released as a single but did not chart on any of the Billboard charts. It even avoided the Mainstream Rock chart, but maybe it was just overlooked? The album was a commercial success, with 3 singles becoming top 20 rock hits, this song was the exception. But it seems as though they might have been victims of their own success. The members of the group were still in their teens at the time & may have just burned out to soon. California Rain by Silvertide www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmyUgAk0YIQ

Tony! Toni! Toné! was a soul/R&B band from Oakland. They were popular during the late 1980s and early to mid-1990s. The group disbanded after the release of their fourth album House of Music in 1996. This song comes from their 2nd album, The Revival. It was released in 1990 and has been certified as a Platinum seller. The album charted for 64 weeks on the Billboard Top Pop Albums, peaking at number 34. It included four #1 R&B hits with "It Never Rains (In Southern California)", "Feels Good", "The Blues", and "Whatever You Want" all getting to the top. "Feels Good" was the group's first single to breach the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 and went gold. The 4th single "It Never Rains (In Southern California)" became a number-one R&B hit and also peaked at number 34 on the Hot 100. This video was directed by actress Lisa Bonet. Long time since I heard that name. It Never Rains In Southern California by Tony Toni Tone www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yNibj8LW-Q

ZZ Top is a rock band formed in 1969 in Houston. For 51 years the band comprised vocalist-guitarist Billy Gibbons, drummer Frank Beard and vocalist-bassist Dusty Hill, until Hill's death in 2021. Dusty Hill's guitar tech, Elwood Francis, is the new bass player for the band. The name of the band was Gibbons' idea. The band had a small apartment covered with concert posters and he noticed that many performers' names used initials like B.B. King and Z. Z. Hill and thought of combining the two into "ZZ King", but considered it too similar to the original name. He then figured that "king is at the top" which gave him the idea of naming the band "ZZ Top" The band has released 15 studio albums and sold an estimated 50 million albums worldwide. The members were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. They have earned 4 gold, 3 platinum, 2 multiple-platinum album certifications, and 1 diamond album. This song was included on Tres Hombres, the 3rd studio album by the band. It was released in 1973. It was the band's commercial breakthrough; in the US, the album entered the top ten while the single "La Grange" reached number 41 on the Billboard Hot 100. According to Billy Gibbons, he got the idea for this song when he was a teenager. He was talking on the phone to a friend who was known as "R&B Jr" who had lots of strange sayings in his lexicon. One day Billy was talking to him on the phone when he blurted out "Jesus Just Left Chicago!". Gibbons also explained: "We took what could have been an easy 12-bar blues and made it more interesting by adding those odd extra measures. It's the same chords as "La Grange" with the Robert Johnson lick, but weirder." "Jesus Just Left Chicago" is the band's third most played concert song. Luther Allison was a blues guitarist, he was born in Widener, Arkansas. He moved with his family to Chicago in 1951 and attended Farragut High School where he was classmates with Muddy Waters' son. He taught himself guitar and began listening to blues extensively. Three years later he dropped out of school and began hanging around outside blues nightclubs with the hopes of being invited to perform. He played with the bands of Howlin' Wolf and Freddie King, taking over King's band when King toured nationally. During his tour in the summer of 1997 he checked into a hospital for dizziness and loss of coordination. It was discovered that he had a tumor on his lung that had metastasized to his brain. Her died on August 12, 1997, five days before his 58th birthday. He was posthumously inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1998. Seems like he was a bit ahead of his time. In 1957, he formed a band with 2 of his brothers, Ollie and Grant, they initially called themselves The Rolling Stones, but later changed to The Four Jivers. This song comes from his Rich Man album, it was his 14th studio album & came out in 1987. Chicago by Luther Allison www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfSCJPuNq1Y

Devo is a rock band from Akron, Ohio, formed in 1973. Their classic lineup consisted of two sets of brothers, the Mothersbaughs (Mark and Bob) and the Casales (Gerald and Bob), along with Alan Myers. The name Devo comes from the concept of "de-evolution" and the band's related idea that instead of continuing to evolve, mankind had begun to regress, as evidenced by the dysfunction and herd mentality of American society. They had been releasing singles into the market for 4 years prior to their breakthrough hit Whip It. That song made it to #14 & it became their 1st & only top 40 hit. It was also their 1 & only Platinum selling hit. The band has been nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018, 2021 and 2022, but so far have not broken through. During their career they have released 9 studio albums, 6 Live albums, 12 compilation albums, 1 soundtrack & 25 singles. This song comes from a 3 song EP that consisted of 2 different versions of the song. It was the theme song to the 1983 movie starring Dan Ackroyd, Howard Hessman & way down the list, Fran Dresher & Glenn Hedley. It was the 1st movie for Dan after the death of John Belushi. The song peaked at #59, the movie did not do much better. Doctor Detroit by Devo www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaWcVczcbi8

Their most recent studio album came out in 2021. Evidently this song has not been included on any of their albums, but it does appear on an album that they released under the group name of The Wildbunch. Lucius Venable "Lucky" Millinder was a swing and rhythm-and-blues bandleader from Anniston, Alabama. Although he could not read or write music, did not play an instrument and rarely sang, his showmanship and musical taste made his bands successful. His group was said to have been the greatest big band to play rhythm and blues, and gave work to a number of musicians who later became influential at the dawn of the rock and roll era. He was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in 1986. He died of a liver ailment in New York City in September 1966, he was just 56. In the late 30’s he discovered singer and guitarist Sister Rosetta Tharpe, with whom his ensembles performed for many years, and first recorded with in 1938. The Apollo Theater is a music hall at (Seventh Avenue) and (Eighth Avenue) in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. The Apollo grew to prominence during the Harlem Renaissance of the pre-World War II years. Billing itself as a place "where stars are born and legends are made," the Apollo became famous for launching the careers of artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, who made her singing debut at 17 at the Apollo, on November 21, 1934. Other performers whose careers started at the Apollo include Billie Holiday, Pearl Bailey, Sammy Davis Jr., James Brown & The Famous Flames, King Curtis, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Parliament-Funkadelic, Wilson Pickett, The Miracles, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Stephanie Mills, Dionne Warwick, The Jackson 5, Patti Austin, Patti LaBelle, Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Ben E. It seems like if there is ever a tribute concert planned, Gaga is one of the artists they pick to perform. Here is one of those performances. From the 100th birthday celebration of Frank Sinatra, she takes on one of Frank’s biggest. This was December 2015. I am always in awe of this woman’s talent. Christian Kane is a actor and singer-songwriter. He says that he is of Cherokee (Native American) ancestry. The family moved around the South and the Midwest because his father was in the oil business, and they finally settled in Norman, Oklahoma where he spent most of his youth. He is the lead singer of the country-southern rock band Kane which was formed in 1998 in Los Angeles. Other members of the band include Steve Carlson (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Jason Southard (lead guitar), Will Amend (bass guitar), and Ryan Baker (drums). His filmography & list of TV appearances largely outdistances his list of released records. They have released just 2 albums, 1 studio album & 1 Live album. This song appears on their studio album called Kane, it was released in 2000. Even though this appears to be a Live performance the song is not included on their Live album. Bob Wills was a Western swing musician, songwriter, and bandleader born on a cotton farm in Kosse, Texas. He is considered as the founder of Western swing, & was known as the King of Western Swing. The Country Music Hall of Fame inducted Bob in 1968 and the Texas State Legislature honored him for his contribution to American music. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted Bob and the Texas Playboys in 1999. He suffered two strokes that left him partially paralyzed, and unable to communicate. He was comatose the last two months of his life, and died in a Fort Worth nursing home in 1975. He was 70 years old. There is a long, long list of his recordings. His 1st album seems to have been released in 1949 but whether or not this song ever made it to an album of original material I have no idea. It did appear on a Greatest hits compilation in 1992. This was evidently recorded during his 1st studio session in 1935 & was the “A” side to his 3rd single which was backed by a song called Get With It. Even though the Billboard Country Charts date all the way back to 1939, these guys did not have their 1st charting single until 1943, despite the fact that they had released well over 50 singles before that. This will be the final song from the state of Tennessee. Waylon will sing us out. The name on his birth certificate was Wayland. It was changed after a Baptist preacher visited his parents and congratulated his mother for naming him after the Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, Texas. She had been unaware of the college & changed the spelling to Waylon. Jennings later expressed in his autobiography, "I didn't like Waylon. It sounded corny and hillbilly, but it's been good to me, and I'm pretty well at peace with it right now." Waylon started playing guitar at the age of eight and performed at age 14 on KVOW radio, after which he formed his first band, The Texas Longhorns. In 1958, Buddy Holly arranged Waylon's first recording session, and hired him to play bass for him on the Winter Dance Party Tour, which began January 23rd, 1959, in Milwaukee. That led to this weird bit of history, & ya gotta wonder what went through his mind in the following years. Waylon gave up his seat on the plane that crashed killing Buddy Holly, J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson and Ritchie Valens. The Big Bopper who was suffering from the flu, asked Jennings for his seat on the plane, and Ritchie Valens asked the same of guitarist Tommy Allsup. When Jennings told Holly that he was going to take the bus, Holly jokingly told him he hoped the bus broke down, to which Jennings replied, “I hope your ol’ plane crashes.” In 2001, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. In 2007, he was posthumously awarded the Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award by the Academy of Country Music. Nashville Rebel was his 3rd album. It reached #4 on the Billboard country albums chart & it was released 1966. It was also the soundtrack to a movie in which Waylon played Jay Sheridan. The movie also starred other Country music luminaries like Loretta Lynn, Tex Ritter, Sonny James, Faron Young & Chet Atkins who also produced the album. John Kirby was a jazz double-bassist, who also played trombone and tuba. In addition to sideman work (prominently with Benny Goodman), he led his own band caller The Biggest Little Band In The Land. He was born in Baltimore on the last day of 1908 & raised in Winchester, Virginia. In 1928, he met trombonist Jimmy Harrison, saxophonist Coleman Hawkins and composer Duke Ellington in Baltimore. Harrison persuaded Kirby to switch from trombone to tuba. Shortly after his arrival in New York, Kirby played tuba with Bill Brown and His Brownies at the Star Ballroom on Forty-Second Street. Later, he performed with pianist Charlie Sheets at the Bedford Ballroom in Brooklyn and then with John C. Smith's Society Band at Harlem's Alhambra Ballroom. After the war, Kirby got the surviving sextet members back together, with Sarah Vaughan as vocalist, but the reunion did not last. A concert at Carnegie Hall in December 1950, with Bailey plus drummer Sid Catlett, attracted only a small audience, which "crushed Kirby's spirit and badly damaged what little was left of his career. As his career declined, he drank heavily and was beset by diabetes. He moved to Hollywood where he died in 1952, aged 43, just before a planned comeback. The Pump Room was a restaurant established on October 1, 1938 by Ernie Byfield. It closed in 2017, then reopened under different names. It is located in the Ambassador Chicago hotel, formerly known as the Ambassador East, on the northeast corner of State Parkway and Goethe Street in Chicago's Gold Coast area. The lobby of the hotel, including the entrance to The Pump Room, is seen in Alfred Hitchcock's 1959 North by Northwest. Evidently this song was recorded in 1940. Mathew Kearney is a singer/song writer musician born in Eugene, Oregon, now living in Nashville. He attended California State University, Chico in Chico, California, on an athletic scholarship to play soccer. He majored in literature, playing soccer until his junior year. He first became interested in music after traveling to Nashville with music producer Robert Marvin. The two began to make music together, but Marvin had plans to move to Nashville, Tennessee. Marvin asked Kearney to help with the move and he accepted. Kearney says, "I helped him pack up his trailer and we put a mattress on the back of his truck. We basically drove cross-country and slept in the back. When we pulled into Nashville we slept in a school parking lot for three days until we finally rented this apartment where the roof was caving in and mice were crawling all over." Kearney decided to stay in Nashville to record a few demos with Marvin and after a few months, Kearney had no plans on returning. "By the end of the summer, we had three or four songs and I realized this is what I wanted to do. It just clicked. So I called home to Oregon and said, 'I'm not coming back' and I never left Nashville. During his career he has released 7 studio albums with the most recent one happening in 2021. This song 1st appeared as an acoustic Itunes Bonus Track on his 2nd album called Nothing Left To Lose. It came out in 2006. The album landed at #109 on the Billboard top 200 Albums Chart, but got to #4 on The Christian Albums Chart & #2 on the US Heatseekers Chart. It has been certified as a gold album, selling over 500,000 units. Chicago by Matt Kearney www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wjiXGoLvCQ

Bob Dylan is regarded as one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Someone has compiled a list of songs written by Bob, it goes on & on. This song was written under the title of Bob Dylan’s New Orleans Rag, even if that isn‘t what it says here. It goes back to 1963 & was originally recorded at the sessions for his The Times They Are a-Changin album on 24 October 1963 but it did not make the cut for that album. It went unreleased for 50 years. It finally came out on an album called The 50th Anniversary Collection 1963. It was the second Dylan collection released by Sony Music to prevent the recordings from legally entering the public domain in Europe. The album was issued on vinyl only in November 2013, they released just 100 copies of the six-LP set. This was the last song on side A of album 1. Delta Twins are a Blues Band from Farmington Hills, MI. They are another band that doesn’t have much info, so this comes direct from their website & it may be a bit flowery. The band features the powerful vocals of Bob Young (plus his keys and harmonica), the tasteful tones and scorching fire of guitarist Terry Birkett, and the rock-solid rhythm section of Tom Kozanecki (bass) and Doug Austin (drums). It appears as though they have released just 3 albums so far, with the most recent one coming in 2017. But they are still out there, so I reckon there is still a chance for new stuff in the future. This song comes from their 2nd album. It was called Nothing Left but Hope & it came out in 2014. To me this harkens back to the blues rock of the 60’s & 70’s. You don’t hear as much of it anymore. James Horner was a composer, conductor, and orchestrator of film scores he was born in Los Angeles. He died on June 22, 2015, when his turboprop aircraft crashed into the Los Padres National Forest near Ventucopa, California. He was the only occupant of the aircraft, three days later, on June 25, the Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the crash an accident. His big break came in 1982 when he was asked to score Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. It established him as an A-list Hollywood composer. Director Nicholas Meyer quipped that Horner was hired because the studio could no longer afford the first Trek movie's composer, Jerry Goldsmith; but that by the time Meyer returned to the franchise with Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, the studio could not afford Horner either. James's biggest critical and financial success came in 1997 with his score for James Cameron's Titanic. At the 70th Academy Awards, he received the Oscar for Best Original Dramatic Score, and shared the Oscar for Best Original Song with co-writer Will Jennings for "My Heart Will Go On". The film's score and song also won three Grammy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards. He has also been nominated for Oscars for his scores from Aliens, Somewhere Out There, Field Of Dreams, Appollo 13, Braveheart, A Beautiful Mind, House Of Sand & Fog & Avatar. This song comes from the 2010 remake of The Karate Kid. The movie starred Jackie Chan, Taraji P. Henson & Jaden Smith. Movie scores are as close to classical music as we will ever get around here. Mostly because Beethoven never wrote anything called Leaving Detroit. Leaving Detroit by James Horner www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-CHkj7hkqY

Today is a day for exploring some of the “lettered” streets in NYC. Red Rider, is a Canadian rock band formed in Toronto in 1975. The band originally consisted of Peter Boynton (keyboards, synthesizers, vocals), Ken Greer (guitars, keyboards, backing vocals) and Rob Baker (drums) joined up with Arvo Lepp (guitar) and Jon Checkowski (bass) and began playing around Toronto, performing both original and cover music. In 1978, their manager at that time was contacted by Capitol Records about adding singer/guitarist/composer Tom Cochrane to the group. Cochrane was invited to one of the band's gigs in London, Ontario to rehearse with them. Boynton, Greer and Baker were impressed with his playing and songwriting but Lepp and Checkowski were not as enthused and decided to leave the band. The band later became known as Tom Cochrane & Red Rider. Ken Greer is the only original member remaining. While they achieved significant success in Canada, the band never had a song in the top 40 in the United States, although "Lunatic Fringe" from their second album, 1981's As Far as Siam, became popular on US album-oriented rock radio. Avenue A is a north–south avenue located in Manhattan, New York City, east of First Avenue and west of Avenue B. It runs from Houston Street to 14th Street, where it continues into a loop road in Stuyvesant Town, connecting to Avenue B. Below Houston Street, Avenue A continues as Essex Street. This song comes from their 1st album "Don't Fight It" from 1980. It sold more than 100,000 copies in Canada and earned them their 1st gold album certification award and was later certified platinum. A United States version with a modified track list, dropping "Talkin' to Myself" and reordering the other tracks, was released in 1980, it eventually came in at #146 0n the Billboard Top 200. This lady is another one of those obscure artists. Even though it is hard to find current info on her, her voice deserves a listen. I copied this info from the only source I could find, www.sonicbids.com/band/lexipierson/Lexi Pierson grew up in the little town of Gauley Bridge, West Virginia, now living in Tampa Bay. She was raised by her grandparents in a family environment that fostered and encouraged her love for music. She attributes her musical ear to her Mom, who can play anything by ear on the piano. A trio of mentors---Uncle Dan, Daddy, and Pop---showed her the guitar basics on a 1963 Sunburst Epiphone, (which has yet to be retired), and she was on her way. In her teens, Lexi was part of several rock bands, playing drums, bass, and rhythm guitar. After high school, she spent two years playing up and down the East Coast before joining the U.S. Air Force for a four year hitch. While serving her country, she found time to perform not only across America, but Europe as well. This gave her valuable experience in exposing her music to people of many countries, backgrounds, and cultures. When Lexi's Air Force enlistment was up, she decided to move on to following her music career. Since moving to the Tampa Bay, FL area in 2005, she has established herself on the music scene there, while pursuing a Bachelor's degree at the University of South Florida. She still finds time to perform for audiences both here and in Europe. Her most recent European tour included stops in Germany and the Czech Republic where she received an enthusiastic response both from the audiences, and the musicians she met and worked with. The self-titled acoustic album showcases a dynamic artist who posesses all the elements---truly standout vocals, intense well-crafted lyrics, and superb acoustic guitar musicianship. Many of her songs reflect her exploration of the intricacies of personal relationships, with all the joys and the difficulties they contain. She also considers larger social issues of life in the world today, but with a deft touch which captures the way these issues affect personal lives. In addition to the talent she brings to her recorded work, Lexi is an absolutely engaging live performer, developing a rapport with all types of audiences. People sense quickly that she is the real thing, and feel connected to the whole experience. In a musical landscape which abounds with solo female acoustic artists, Lexi Pierson stands out as an uncommonly seductive talent. I believe this was the only album she has ever released. It was self titled & it came out in 2007. Somebody needs to give this lady another chance. Oklahoma Sky by Lexi Pierson www.youtube.com/watch?v=8869uddnms0

"Big Boy" Crudup was a Delta blues singer, songwriter and guitarist. He was born in Union Grove, Forest, Mississippi. His real name was Arthur William Crudup. He died of complications of heart disease and diabetes in March 1974, he was 68. He began his career as a blues singer around Clarksdale, Mississippi. As a member of the Harmonizing Four, he visited Chicago in 1939. He stayed in Chicago to work as a solo musician but barely made a living as a street singer. The record producer Lester Melrose allegedly found him while Crudup was living in a packing crate, introduced him to Hudson Whittaker, better known as Tampa Red, and signed him to a recording contract. He is best known, outside blues circles, for some of the songs he wrote like "That's All Right" (1946), "My Baby Left Me" and "So Glad You're Mine", later recorded by Elvis Presley and other artists. One of the experts who consider his song "That's All Right" to be the "first rock and roll song" is Southeastern Louisiana University rock historian Joseph Burns. He adds that "this song could contain the first ever guitar solo break". Another source is equally definitive, stating that the recording "stands as a convincing front-runner for rock ‘n’ roll’s ground zero". An article by The Guardian in 2004 refutes the suggestion that Presley's version should be considered one of the first records of the rock'n'roll genre. It was simply one of "the first white artists' interpretations of a sound already well-established by black musicians almost a decade before. It was a raucous, driving, unnamed variant of rhythm and blues" Evidently this song was 1st recorded in the year 1942 & released as a single in 1943. It was included on an album called Rock Me Mama that was released posthumously n 2002. Mean Old Frisco Blues by Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6d2GTYG4lc
