Well, after all this time & hundreds of songs about all parts of this country, we are now down to 2 remaining states with music left. It is a standoff between New York & California for the dominant spot. So, as they battle it out, we will follow the sun & begin the day in the East & end in the West. Which state will be the last one standing? There are still tons of songs from each one, so it may take a while to figure it out.
Let us begin. Country Weather is a psychedelic rock band that was closely associated with the San Francisco music scene of the late 1960s.
Originally named The Virtues, the band was formed in 1999 in the San Francisco suburb of Walnut Creek by high school students Dave Carter (vocals, bass),Denny Rogan (lead guitar) and Steve Derr (vocals, rhythm guitar). They were eventually joined by Greg Douglass (lead guitar) and Bill Baron (drums).
In 1967, the band changed their name to Country Weather, at the suggestion of San Francisco music promoter Chet Helms. Chet also suggested that the band stop playing cover versions and concentrate on writing their own original material. Soon after, they began opening for various psychedelic bands at key counter-culture venues in San Francisco, including the Avalon Ballroom, the Fillmore Auditorium, and Winterland.
They never signed to a major record label or released any singles or albums during their 1960s heyday, but they did record a five song promotional demo in 1969 to help them get gigs. 50 copies of this demo record were produced (making it a much sought-after rarity among collectors) , the song linked to here was included on that demo, so it is indeed a rarity.
They disbanded in 1973 when Greg Douglass left the band to join Mistress. Later he joined the Steve Miller Band and has also played as a sideman to established artists, including Van Morrison. Dave Carter went on to play with Quicksilver Messenger Service and also played with former Moby Grape member, Skip Spence.
They reformed in 2000 for a benefit show & that led to them getting the band back together & they were finally given the opportunity to release 2 albums. This song was included on the 2nd of those albums. It was a self – titled album & came out in 2005.
This has become their signature song.

Jesse Fuller was a one-man band musician, from Jonesboro, Georgia. He died in 1976, from heart disease, at the age of 79.
In the 1920s, he lived in southern California, where he operated a hot-dog stand and was befriended by Douglas Fairbanks. He worked briefly as a film extra in The Thief of Bagdad (1924) and East of Suez. In 1929, he settled in Oakland, where he worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad for many years as a fireman and a gandy dancer. During World War II, he worked as a shipyard welder, but when the war ended, he found it increasingly difficult to secure employment. Around the early 1950s, he began to consider the possibility of making a living as a musician.
This is considered to be his most famous composition. He first recorded the song in 1954, which was released by the World Song label in 1955. The song appears on a Smithsonian Folkways compilation, Friends of Old Time Music.

Calabasas is a city in the southwestern region of the San Fernando Valley, between the foothills of the Santa Monica and Santa Susana mountains. Calabasas was the name given to a ranchería in the Los Angeles area in 1795. The Leonis Adobe, in Old Town Calabasas, dates from 1844 and is one of the oldest surviving buildings in greater Los Angeles. Calabasas is also the place that is sadly known as the location of the helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant & others in 2020.
I believe this is the 1st foreign language song I have ever posted. It would do Carlo Santana proud.

Daniel Merriweather is an Australian R&B recording artist from the Melbourne suburb of Sassafras in the Dandenong Ranges.
He signed with Marlin Records, which led to work with UK guitarist Mark Ronson, who was a member of David Bowie's band, on the latter's debut album, Here Comes the Fuzz, ("She's Got Me" and "NYC Rules") in 2003.
Merriweather's debut solo album, Love & War, was released in June 2009 & produced by Mick Ronson. It entered the UK Albums Chart at number two. It was preceded by two singles, "Change" and "Red", which both made the top 10 on the related singles chart. None of those songs charted in the states.
Merriweather has won two ARIA Music Awards, Best Urban Release in 2005 for "She's Got Me" and Best Male Artist in 2009 for Love & War.
This was the lead off song from that 2009 debut album, which also became his only album. The album charted in the top 10 in many countries, but failed to land here in the states. It did chart on the Heat Seekers Albums chart on Billboard, but that didn’t translate to success on the top 200. It was certified Platinum in the UK with sales over 300,000.
I don’t remember ever seeing the name of Sean Lennon associated with any other musician, yet he plays lead guitar on this song.

Silver Jews were a indie rock band from New York City, formed in 1989 by David Berman along with Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich. Berman was the only constant band member in the group & they disbanded in 2009.
Berman was living in Hoboken, New Jersey with two University of Virginia friends, Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich, and recording discordant tapes in their living room. Around this time, he worked as a security guard at New York's Whitney Museum of American Art, which influenced their music. Berman said, "We were working at the Whitney with all this conceptual art, and we were learning about it [...] And so I thought, "Well let's just make this record that looks like a record, and has song titles and everything, but the songs would be the ones we make at home that sound terrible.
Their musical style has been described by AllMusic as "a beautiful mess of indie rock, country-rock and lo-fi with lyrics both witty and profound", while Billboard described them as a "lo-fi mixture of noise rock and country music".
This song comes from their Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea, album. It was their 6th & final release & it came out in 2008.
Despite those reviews, this is pretty fun.

"Chu" Berry was a jazz tenor saxophonist during the 1930s, he was from from Wheeling West. Virginia. His full name was Leon Brown Berry. He died from injuries suffered in a car accident in October, 1941, he was just 33.
According to music critic Gary Giddins, musicians called him "Chu" either because he chewed on the mouthpiece of his saxophone or because he had a Fu Manchu mustache.
Chu Berry is the unofficial name of a series of saxophones produced by the C.G. Conn company during the 1920s, though it is more accurate to refer to them as the Conn New Wonder Series II. Some saxophone owners use the term "Chu Berry" in reference to any Conn saxophone made between 1910 and the mid-1930s, including soprano, alto, baritone and C melody saxophones, none of which Chu actually played.
This song was the “B” side to a single called Sittin In, released in 1938.

Today, Blue is generally regarded by music critics as one of the greatest albums of all time. The album featured 2 singles, Carey which stalled out at 93 on the Hot 100 & the song linked to here, which didn’t chart at all.
She wrote the song while living in France, but longing for the creative climate she had experienced in California. The Lords are a German rock band, formed in Berlin in 1959. They are one of the longest-running beat groups from Germany, covering the past 60+ years.
They began life as a skiffle band in Berlin using partly homemade instruments. In 1964 when Beatlemania and the British Invasion swept across the world, they turned into "Germany's First Beat Music Act" and developed their classic style for which they are still known in Germany today.
They had the opportunity to be a supporting act of The Kinks and The Who on German tours of the two English bands, and performed on the contemporary TV music program Beat-Club several times.
In 1967 their success allowed them to make an appearance as the main band in the Legia Stadium in Warsaw in front of 25,000 spectators; they were the first western band allowed to perform in a Soviet bloc country.
The band is still active & still touring. It is difficult to pin down exactly if this song was ever a hit single. It certainly never charted in the US but it may have done so in other countries. I can say that I have not been able to confirm it was ever included on any albums. The video says it comes from 1969, but none of the sites I checked even included it as a single.
But it is truly amazing that someone has made it available on youtube. What would we do without that repository of musical history?

He was associated with the Cotton Club in Harlem, where he was a regular performer and became a popular vocalist of the swing era. His career spanned over 65 years.

Once again, I have to take the word of the person who posted this video who says that the song was originally recorded in 1947. He didn’t release his 1st album until 1953 & this song was not on it & I can find no info on it being released as a single. The song was included on a compilation album called Hi De Ho Man in 1974.

Mighty Sparrow, is a Trinidadian calypso vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist from the fishing village of Grand Roy, Grenada, West Indies. His real name is Slinger Francisco. He is still with us & will turn 88 in July.
Known as the "Calypso King of the World", he is one of the best-known and most successful calypsonians. Interest in calypso was sparked largely by Harry Belafonte's 1956 album Calypso, the first such album to sell over one million copies. In January 1958, Sparrow, along with longtime rival Lord Melody, travelled to New York City seeking access to the American music audience. He did not achieve the success he had hoped for; he said in a 2001 interview, "When nothing happened for me, I went back to England and continued on with my career."
Despite his lack of success in the states, he has been recognized by his local government for his accomplishments with the following honorariums:
In 1987- Honorary Doctor of Letters (D. Litt.) from the University of the West Indies, In 2013 – Lifetime Achievement Award, Trinidad & Tobago Government, 2015 Birthday Honours – Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE), & Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
This guy has released so many albums during his career that in 2000 a company released a compilation of his music called The Millennium Series. It consisted of 40 separate albums.

Victoria Spivey was a blues singer and songwriter from Houston. She died in 1976, at the age of 69, from an internal hemorrhage.
During a recording career that spanned 40 years, from 1926 to the mid-1960s, she worked with Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Clarence Williams, Luis Russell, Lonnie Johnson, and Bob Dylan.
In 1918, she was hired as a piano player to accompany silent films at the Lincoln Theater in Dallas. She was all of 11 years old!
In 1926 she moved to St. Louis where she was signed by Okeh Records. Her first recording, "Black Snake Blues" (1926), sold well. Beginning with that song, she continued to release new songs with a “blues” theme. There was Black Snake Blues, No More Jelly Bean Blues, Spider Web Blues, Garter Snake Blues, Christmas Mornin Blues, & on & on it went for the remainder of her career. I could safely say, that of the songs I saw listed, easily 75% if them contained the word Blues somewhere in the title.
This song was originally included on her 1962 album Victoria & Her Blues, she was never too far from “The Blues”. The song was released as a part of a 4 song 45 that included Playing With The Keys, Turpentine & Buddy Tate.

They were named after a 1961 B-movie called The Phantom Planet. They are best known for the track linked to here, which became the theme song for the TV series The O.C..
As a touring band they have opened for many well-known artists, including Guns N' Roses, Sting, Elvis Costello, Incubus, Guided by Voices, Blink-182, The Zombies, The Hives, Sloan, American Hi-Fi, Maroon 5, Ludacris, Panic! at the Disco, The Rocket Summer and Paramore.
During their career they have released 5 studio albums with the most recent one coming in 2020. This song comes from their 2nd studio album. It was called The Guest & it came out in 2002. The album landed at 133 on the Top 200 albums & produced this song which has become their biggest hit. It hit #25 on the Alternative Rock charts & has been certified as a Gold Record.
The estates of Al Jolson and his songwriting team are co-credited for "California", presumably because the title and chorus bear strong resemblances to his own "California, Here I Come". Some websites refer to the Phantom Planet song as a cover of the Jolson tune.

In 1977, the melody from "Mon Pays" was reworked into the disco song "From New York to L.A." & recorded by Patsy. This song with English lyrics by Gene Williams unrelated to the original French, was an international hit for Patsy. The song charted in the UK (#6 in the UK Singles Chart) in August 1977, Ireland (#5), Australia (#10), the Netherlands (#15), Norway (#7), South Africa (#5) and Sweden (#17). Chris Kenner was a R&B singer and songwriter, born in Kenner, Louisiana. He died from a heart attack in 1976, at the age of 46, triggered by alcoholism.
During his career he charted 3 singles between the years 1957 & 1963. His biggest hit came in 1962 when the song "I Like It Like That" charted at #2 on both the pop & R&B charts & went on to sell over a million copies.
His alcoholism caused distress during his career & his life. Hw was affected by unpredictable behavior – he drank and spent heavily, and he sometimes missed shows or forgot the words to his songs. He continued to record until 1968, with diminishing success. In 1968, he was convicted of statutory rape of a minor and spent three years in Louisiana's Angola prison.
This song was released as a single in 1967 with a “B” side called Wind The Clock but it was long past his sell by date & neither side charted.

The Mamas & the Papas were a folk rock vocal group from L.A.
They were relatively short lived being together only between 1965 & 1968. Group members were Americans John Phillips, Cass Elliot, and Michelle Phillips, and Canadian Denny Doherty. The group was a defining force in the music scene of the counterculture of the 1960s.
Michele Phillips is the only one that is still with us, she is now 78. Denny Doherty passed in 2007 at the age of 66. Cass Elliot died in 1974 at the age of 32 & John Phillips left us in in 2001 at the age of 65.
They released 5 studio albums and 17 singles over four years, six of which made the Billboard top 10. They have sold close to 40 million records worldwide.
The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 for its contributions to the music industry.
The version of the song linked to here was the 1st hit single for the group. It hit #4 for them back in 1966 & has been installed into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, but they provided backing vocals to Barry McGuire who was the 1st to record the song in 1965 without any chart success.
John wrote the song while he and Michelle were living in New York City during a particularly cold winter, and Michelle was missing sunny California. At the time, they were both members of the folk group the New Journeymen, which evolved into the Mamas and the Papas.
The song was included on their 1st studio album called If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears. The album got to #1 on the Top 200 albums chart. This song was the 2nd single released. It was preceded by Go Where You Wanna Go which did not chart for the group, but did become a hit for The Fifth Dimension in 1967. The 3rd song released from the album was Monday, Monday & that one would become the 1st & only #1 hit for the group.

Rick Nelson was a musician and actor, born in Teaneck, N.J. He was a graduate of Hollywood High in 1958. He died on December 31, 1985, when the Douglas DC-3 on which he was a passenger crashed into trees, poles, and electrical wires, while attempting an emergency landing while in flight between Guntersville, Alabama and Dallas, where he was to perform a New Year's Eve concert, he was 45.
His discography includes 24 studio albums, 1 live album, various compilation and archival projects, and 94 singles.
This was the title song to his 1972 album, it was his 20th studio album. The album got to 32 on the Top 200 chart. The song itself was a multi – chart hit. It landed at 44 on the Hot Country Singles chart, 6 on the Hot 100 & #1 on the Easy Listening Chart.
The song tells the story of him being booed at a concert at Madison Square Garden. He started playing his older songs like "Hello Mary Lou", but then he played the Rolling Stones' "Country Honk" (a country version of their hit song "Honky Tonk Women") and the crowd began to boo. While some reports say that the booing was caused by police action in the back of the audience, Nelson thought it was directed at him. Nevertheless, he sang another song but then left the building and did not appear onstage for the finale.
