I'm generally not a fan of Billie Eilish's whisper vocals (being fair, I realize I'm not her demographic audience) but I give credit where its due and her new album "Hit me Hard and Soft" is absolutely amazing. It's an incredibly personal album of someone who has seen some things romance-wise and has come out safely on the other side, plus the production values on it are amazing. This is what growth in both person and craft looks like. Even if you're not a fan give it a listen; as a sometimes hater I LOVE this and I've been rotating this album with Willow Smith's (another fantastic new release deserving of some shine) all morning!

The original version of this song was written by Harold Arlen & Johnny Mercer for the 1943 movie “The Sky’s The Limit,” which starred Fred Astaire and Joan Leslie. Joan sang the movie version of the song. It was nominated for the Oscar for Best Music, Original Song but lost out to “You’ll Never Know” from Hello, Frisco, Hello.
The version linked to here reached #4 on the national best-sellers chart in 1943.
It is sung by Eugenie Baird. She was a big-band, jazz, and radio singer from Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania. She became the vocalist for the Casa Loma Orchestra in 1943. In a 1944 review, jazz writer George T. Simon described Baird as "the prettiest girl I've ever seen in front of a band, and, in addition, the possessor of one of the prettiest voices I've ever heard in back of a microphone."

Dinah Shore was a pretty determined lady.
After failing singing auditions for the bands of Benny Goodman, and both Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey, she struck out on her own & became the first singer of her era to achieve huge solo success.
She had 80 charted hits between from 1940 & 1957, and after appearing in a handful of feature films, she went on to a four-decade career in television. She starred in her own music and variety shows from 1951 through 1963 and hosted two talk shows in the 1970s. TV Guide ranked her at number 16 on their list of the top 50 television stars of all time.
She released her 1st solo albumin 1941 & her final one in 1979. She was in her 1st movie in 1943 & her final one in 1980. She was the headliner in multiple seasons of The Dinah Shore Chevy Show.
This song was originally written by Cole Porter for the 1932 musical Gay Divorce. Fred Astaire sang it in the original production, but it as been covered many time over the years from Billie Holiday in 1939 to Ringo Starr in 1970 & as a duet by Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga in 2021.
This version appears on an album called Dinah's Showtime '44 - '47. Not sure when she recorded it though.

We have heard this song many times from many different types of artists, but I don’t think we have ever heard anyone turn it on its head quite like Sarah Vaughan does with her version.
She recorded it for her 1982 album Crazy And Mixed Up. She was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Female at the 26th Annual Grammy Awards for her performance on this album, but she lost out to Ella Fitzgerald & The Best Is Yet To Come.
The folks you hear on this song are Sarah Vaughan - vocals, Roland Hanna - piano, Andy Simpkins - double bass, Harold Jones - drums & some incredible lead guitar work from Joe Pass.

The Jayhawks are an alternative country and country rock band that emerged from the Twin Cities music scene in the mid-1980s.
They are like a lot of the bands we have seen in the past, they breakup & reform over & over. They have been a band again since 2014. There have been many members over the years, but at this point vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Gary Louris is the lone remaining original member.
During their career they have released 11 studio albums, 3 Live albums & 12 singles. This song comes from Tomorrow The Green Grass. It was their 4th studio album & was released on February 14, 1995. It peaked at number 92 on the Billboard 200 chart.
At the time of this album, the group included Mark Olson – vocals, guitar, Gary Louris – vocals, guitar, Marc Perlman – bass, & Karen Grotberg – piano, organ, Wurlitzer, background vocals (her first recording with the band). Don Heffington plays the drums but he was not a full member of the band. The album also includes organ by Benmont Tench from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.
This song was written by Mark Farner of Grand Funk who had previously recorded it for their album All The Girls In The World Beware.

Ray Charles was a singer, songwriter and pianist from Albany, Georgia. He died on June 10, 2004, at age 73, of complications resulting from liver failure.
He is regarded as one of the most iconic and influential musicians in history, and was often referred to by contemporaries as "The Genius". Among friends and fellow musicians, he preferred being called "Brother Ray".
In 1979, he was one of the first musicians born in the state to be inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. In 1986, he was one of the first inductees to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame at its inaugural ceremony. He also received the Kennedy Center Honors in 1986. In 1991, he was inducted to the Rhythm & Blues Foundation and was presented with the George and Ira Gershwin Award for Lifetime Musical Achievement during the 1991 UCLA Spring Sing. In 2015, he was inducted into the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame.
Ray won 17 Grammy Awards & in 1987 he was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
During his career he released 62 studio albums, 7 Live albums & 127 singles.
The Genius Sings the Blues was his 11th studio album & was released in October 1961. The album landed at #73 on the Top 200. They originally recorded the song in 1958.
The song seems to have a bit of a long history. It was recorded in 1957 by Nappy Brown, but Blues pianist Roosevelt Sykes recorded "Night Time Is the Right Time" in 1937. In 1938, Big Bill Broonzy recorded the song, as "Night Time Is the Right Time No. 2," with slightly different (and more suggestive) lyrics.
According to Nappy Brown, "The difference between me and Ray Charles's ‘Night Time Is the Right Time' ... is he had it up-tempo with Mary Ann and them behind him—the ladies. I had mine in a slow tempo with a gospel group behind me. That was my gospel group. But he got everything just like mine, note for note". Margie Hendrix with Charles' backup singers the Raelettes provided the accompaniment to Charles' vocals.

The Guess Who was a Canadian rock band formed in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1965.
Their debut album Shakin' All Over released in January 1965 was the band's first major hit, reaching no. 1 in Canada, no. 22 in the United States, and no. 27 in Australia, but it was recorded under the band name Chad Allen & The Expressions. Their Canadian label, disguised the single by crediting it to Guess Who?, as a publicity stunt to generate speculation that it was by a more famous British Invasion band working incognito.
The Guess Who's original members, were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1987. In 2001, the original members received honorary doctorates from Brandon University in Brandon, Manitoba. For Burton Cummings, this was a special honor because he had not graduated from high school.
The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame still has not installed the band.
This song was a part of Canned Wheat. It was their 5th studio album & was released in September 1969. The album landed at #91 on the Top 200. It included the singles Of A Dropping Pin, which did not chart & the double sided hit Laughing #10 & Undun #22.
This song was released as a single only after it was rerecorded & added to the American Woman album. At that point it got to #5.
The song is basically a reverse Dear John letter stating, "No time left for you." Of the song, Randy Bachman said, “That was our country-rock song... Me and Burton trying to be like Neil and Stephen Stills."
The band still included all the original members; Burton Cummings – lead vocals, rhythm guitar, keyboards, flute, harmonica, Randy Bachman – lead guitar, backing vocals, Jim Kale – bass, backing vocals, & Garry Peterson – drums, backing vocals.

And now for something completely different.
Begin the Beguine is a popular song written by Cole Porter. He composed the song during a 1935 Pacific cruise aboard the Cunard ocean liner Franconia from Kalabahi, Indonesia, to Fiji. In October 1935, it was introduced by June Knight in the Broadway musical Jubilee, produced at the Imperial Theatre in New York City.
The song has been recorded many times over the years but this version comes from the movie Broadway Melody of 1940. The movie starred Fred Astaire & Eleanor Powell & this is the two of them dancing together to the song. Pretty incredible stuff.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is a rock band formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1964. They originally called themselves My Backyard. They adapted their new name after guitarist Gary Rossington's high school gym teacher Leonard Skinner.
After releasing 5 studio albums and 1 live album, their career was halted on October 20, 1977, when their chartered airplane crashed, killing Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and backup singer Cassie Gaines; and seriously injuring the rest of the band.
They were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2005. The inductees included Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins, Gary Rossington, Ed King, Steve Gaines, Billy Powell, Leon Wilkeson, Bob Burns, and Artimus Pyle. Of that group only Artimus Powell is still with us, he will turn 76 in July.
This song comes from Street Survivors. It was their 5th studio album & was released on October 17, 1977. The LP is the last Skynyrd album recorded by original members Ronnie Van Zant and Allen Collins, and is the only Skynyrd studio recording by guitarist Steve Gaines. Three days after the album's release, the band's chartered airplane crashed en route to Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
The album peaked at #5 & has been certified 2 X Platinum. The song linked to here was added to the album, after two other songs were dropped. However, the song was originally recorded in 1971 as a Muscle Shoals demo; it was not re-recorded for this album. The song features Greg Walker, Rickey Medlocke, and Ed King in place of Leon Wilkeson, Artimus Pyle, and Steve Gaines.
Out of respect for the deceased (and at the request of Teresa Gaines, Steve's widow), MCA Records withdrew the original cover with the flames on it and replaced it with a similar image of the band against a simple black background.

Roger Williams was a popular music pianist from Omaha, Nebraska. He died of Pancreatic Cancer on October 8, 2011, one week after his 87th birthday. His real name was Louis Jacob Weertz.
During his early years he was a Navy boxing champion & during his later years he would eventually play for nine U.S. Presidential administrations.
We have heard a few variations of this song, but this one is probably the most successful.
Roger had released an album called The Boy Next Door, which failed to make an impact, and then the song "Autumn Leaves" came along. "Autumn Leaves" was recorded at the suggestion of Dave Kapp of Kapp Records who requested it on a Friday. Roger, who had previously thought that the song was titled "Falling Leaves", said: "The first thing that came to mind was to play all those runs down the keyboard, I tried to make it sound like falling leaves." He created the arrangement that Friday and the following Saturday night, and recorded the song on Monday.
They released it as a single in 1955 & it became the only piano instrumental to reach No. 1 on Billboard's popular music chart. It stayed at #1 for 4 weeks & went on to sell over two million copies and was awarded a gold record.

Shep Fields was a bandleader from Brooklyn. He died on February 23, 1981 from a heart attack at the age of 70. His real name was Saul Feldman
He led the Shep Fields and His Rippling Rhythm orchestra during the 1930s. They were featured on big band remote broadcasts from historic hotels nationwide and remained popular with audiences from the 1930s into the early 1960s.
He got his 1st contract with Bluebird Records in 1936. His hits included "Cathedral in the Pines", "Did I Remember?", and "Thanks for the Memory". His performances at Broadway's Paramount Theater consistently broke attendance records. While appearing at the posh "Star-light Roof" atop the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in 1937, Fields replaced Paul Whiteman with his own radio show, The Rippling Rhythm Revue, which featured a young actor named Bob Hope as the announcer on the NBC network.
At various points in the career of his band the group included vocalist Ken Curtis (Festus from Gunsmoke) & a saxophone player named Sid Caesar.
The band also performed a series of USO tours to entertain the troops during World War II.

Otis Rush was a blues guitarist and singer-songwriter from Philadelphia, Mississippi. He died on September 29, 2018, from complications of a stroke, he was 84.
His sound became known as West Side Chicago blues and was an influence on many musicians, including Michael Bloomfield, Peter Green and Eric Clapton.
Otis was elected to the Blues Hall of Fame in 1984. The Jazz Foundation of America honored him with a Lifetime Achievement Award on April 20, 2018 "for a lifetime of genius and leaving an indelible mark in the world of blues and the universal language of music."
This song comes from his 1976 album called Right Place, Wrong Time. The music on this album was originally recorded in San Francisco in 1971 for Capitol Records, who declined to release it at the time. It was finally released on the independent Bullfrog label after Otis bought the tapes.
Eugene Chadbourne of Allmusic compares Capitol's decision not to release the album to a decision to turn down The Doors on the grounds that Jim Morrison had "no charisma", and says that "one can imagine the tapes practically smoldering in their cases, the music is so hot".
This song was a big hit for Brooke Benton in 1970, but you can’t go wrong with this version, it’s simply a beautiful song.

We got hit with multiple tornadoes on Saturday night. It is a pretty devastated area around here, so we need a bit of music to get us back on track.
John Hartman was a jazz singer from Houma, Louisiana. He died in 1983 at the age of 60.
He was known for his baritone voice and recordings of ballads. He sang and recorded with Earl Hines' and Dizzy Gillespie's big bands and with Erroll Garner.
But he is best remembered for his collaboration in 1963 with saxophonist John Coltrane, John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman, a landmark album for both him and Coltrane. And that is where this song comes from.
The album charted at #57 in Germany, but seems to have avoided the charts elsewhere.
Other than Coltrane on Sax & Hartman on vocals, the other players are McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison double bass, & Elvin Jones on drums.

Sound Sun Pleasure!! is an album by Sun Ra and his Astro Infinity Arkestra. The album was originally recorded March 6, 1959, but it remained unreleased until 1970 when it was issued on the Saturn label.
The album is unusual amongst his early albums for predominantly featuring jazz standards.
For instance, the song listed here goes back to Thelonious Monk & his recording in 1943. It is one of the most recorded jazz standards composed by a jazz musician. Monk himself has recorded the song multiple times & one of his versions was inducted into to the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1993. Other folks like Dizzy Gillespie, Charley Parker, Miles Davis, Mel Torme & Ella Fitzgerald have also recorded it.
The vocalist on this version is a lady by the name of Hattie Randolph.

For Van Morrison the Hall of Fame inductions began in 1993 with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was the first living inductee not to attend his own ceremony, – Robbie Robertson from the Band accepted the award on his behalf.
He was the 1st person inducted into the Irish Music Hall of Fame, Bob Geldof presented him with the award. His 3rd big induction was into the Songwriters Hall of Fame for "recognition of his unique position as one of the most important songwriters of the past century".
Three of his songs appear in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll: "Brown Eyed Girl", "Madame George" and "Moondance". The Songwriter's Hall of Fame awarded him the Johnny Mercer Award on 18 June 2015 at their 46th Annual Induction and Awards Dinner in New York City.
Hard Nose the Highway was his 7th studio album & was released in 1973. The album got mediocre reviews at best but it still charted at #27 on the Top 200.
Reviews in The Rolling Stone Record Guide (1979) and The Rolling Stone Album Guide (1992) were less than sterling. In the former, the album was listed as Morrison's only one-star album to date; reviewer Dave Marsh called it "a failed sidestep, a compromise between the visionary demands of Morrison's work and his desire for a broad-based audience." In the later edition, Paul Evans called the record the "vaguest and weakest" of Morrison's 1970s output.

The Bay City Rollers are a Scottish pop rock band formed in Edinburgh in 1964. They have been called the "tartan teen sensations from Edinburgh".
They are once again active after many breakups & reformations. The lineup has changed many times over the years with only Stuart Woods still around & even he didn’t join until 1974.
According to the BBC, the group has sold 120 million records.
In March 2007, six former members of the group announced a lawsuit against Arista Records in hopes of claiming what they described as "tens of millions of dollars" of unpaid royalties. Gordon "Nobby" Clark threatened to sue the other band members if their lawsuit was successful, stating that he was the creative force behind the band's success, even though he left the group in 1973, before the bulk of their fame and fortune began.
After almost a decade, the legal battle came to an end with an out-of-court settlement in 2016. Arista' parent company Sony Music is believed to have paid $3.5 million, with each band member receiving £70,000.
During their career they have released 13 studio albums, 2 Live albums & 31 singles. This song comes from their debut album called Rollin. It was released in October 1974. The album did not chart here in the states, but that was because it was not released here.
The original version of the song was recorded and released in the UK in 1973 with vocals by Nobby Clark but did not hit the charts. At the end of 1975, "Saturday Night" was released in the US and hit #1 in January 1976. The song had been re-recorded with lead vocals by Les McKeown, Nobby's replacement. This is the band's only #1 hit in the US.
At this time the lineup of the band consisted of Les McKeown – vocals, guitar, Eric Faulkner – guitar, violin, mandolin, bass, Stuart Wood "Woody"– guitar, bass, piano, mandolin, Alan Longmuir – bass, accordion, piano, & Derek Longmuir – drums, congas, tambourine.

The Eternals were a 5 man doo wop group from The Bronx. The members included: Ernie Sierra, Carlos Girona, Fred Hodge, Alex Miranda and Anibal Torres. They were all teenagers when they were discovered.
This was their 2nd single & featured Carlos Girona’s Latin lead, Alex Miranda’s bass and a hot sax solo by King Curtis.
They never had a single to land in the Hot 100 so that makes it a bit difficult to find any info. This song was released in 1959.
The Eternals is a pretty popular name though. They should not be confused with the super hero movie starring Angelina Jolie, or to the British Girl Group, or to the Australian Rock Band or to the British Doom Metal Band.

Walter Huston was a Canadian actor and singer from Toronto. He died on April 7, 1950, of an aortic aneurysm in his hotel suite in Beverly Hills, two days after his 67th birthday.
Once talkies began in Hollywood, he was cast in both character roles and as a leading man. His first major role was portraying the villainous Trampas in The Virginian (1929), a Western that costars Gary Cooper and Richard Arlen.
He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, directed by his son John Huston. He is the patriarch of the four generations of the Huston acting family, including his son John, grandchildren Anjelica Huston and Danny Huston, as well as great-grandchild Jack Huston. The family has produced three generations of Academy Award winners: Walter, his son John, and granddaughter Anjelica.
He is certainly known more for his acting, but like many actors across the years he got the chance to sing as well.
This song was composed by Kurt Weill with lyrics by Maxwell Anderson. It was introduced by Walter in the 1938 Broadway musical production Knickerbocker Holiday.
In "September Song", a man now recognizes the "plentiful waste of time" of earlier days, and in the "long, long while from May to December", having reached September, he is looking forward to spending the precious days of autumn with his loved one.

Billy Ward and his Dominoes were an R&B vocal group out of New York City.
They were one of the most successful R&B groups of the early 1950s & were active between 1950 & 1965. During those years the group included many different members but two of the most notable early members were Clyde McPhatter and Jackie Wilson both of whom went on to very successful solo careers.
This song was their 3rd released single but 1st one to hit the Pop charts. It reached #1 on the R&B chart in May 1951 and stayed there for 14 weeks, and crossed over to the pop charts, reaching #17 and voted "Song of the Year" of 1951.
This was an important record in several respects—it crossed the boundaries between gospel singing and blues, its lyrics pushed the limits of what was deemed acceptable, and it appealed to many white as well as black listeners. In later years, it became a contender for the title of "first rock 'n' roll record".
The recording "opened the door for other sexually forthright records, planting the seed for songs like Hank Ballard's "Work with me Annie", Etta James' "Roll with Me Henry" and other future hits".
The song was their biggest hit single on both the Pop & R&B Charts.

George Benson is a jazz fusion guitarist, singer, and songwriter from Pittsburgh. He turned 81 last March.
He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music from the Berklee College of Music in 1990.
George has won 10 Grammy Awards and has been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
His recording history includes 36 studio albums, 5 live albums, 21 compilation albums, & 72 singles. Not to mention his 115 appearances on albums from other artists.
This song comes from an album called Irreplaceable. The album was 1st released in 2003. The song was not included on the original but they re released the album in 2004 & they included the song at that time.
Tom Hull called the album a "dud" in his "Jazz Consumer Guide" for The Village Voice in September 2004. In a commentary published on his website, he explained, "The three instrumentals are minor groove pieces for uninspired guitar and synth beats, but at least they don't have to carry the exceptionally lame lyrics of the other seven songs. The songs come with neatly groomed layered voices. We tend to classify this sort of soul fluff as easy listening, but easy playing is more like it. It's not like anyone can actually listen."
The song itself was written by Sigmund Romberg and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II for the 1928 operetta The New Moon. It has been recorded hundreds of times over the last 96 years.

The Foundations were a British soul band founded in London.
They were primarily active between 1967 and 1970. The group's background was: West Indian, White British and Sri Lankan. Not only was there a diverse ethnic mix in the group, there was also diversity in ages and musical backgrounds. The oldest member of the group, Mike Elliott, was 38 years old. The youngest was Tim Harris, who, at 18, was barely out of school.
The group was the first multi-racial group to have a number one hit in the UK in the 1960s.
This was the 1st single they released & it was also the 1st of 2 Top 40 hits they would have in the US. The song landed at #11 in 1967 & it would be topped by Build Me Up Buttercup which hit #3 in 1968.
