Dr. Feelgood is an English pub rock band formed in 1971, from Canvey Island, Essex.
Their sound was centered on Wilko Johnson's choppy guitar style. Along with Johnson, the initial band line-up included singer Lee Brilleaux and the rhythm section of John B. Sparks, known as "Sparko", on bass guitar and John Martin, known as "The Big Figure", on drums.
Evidently there is a band still touring under the name, but it includes none of the original members. However, 3 of the 4 current members joined the band in 1983 & have been there ever since.
During their career they have released 17 studio albums, 8 Live albums & 35 singles. This song was included on Malpractice. It was their 2nd studio album & it came out in 1975. I don’t see any evidence that they have ever charted an album or a single here in the states. They did land at #17 in the UK with the album. They released the song as the 3rd single from the album but it didn’t chart.
All the original members were still involved on this record.

Sheldon "Shelly" Manne was a jazz drummer from Manhattan. He died of a heart attack in 1984 at the age of 64.
He is mostly associated with West Coast jazz. Known for his versatility he played in a number of other styles, including Dixieland, swing, bebop, avant-garde jazz, and later fusion. He also contributed to the musical background of hundreds of Hollywood films and television programs.
In the early 1950s, he left New York and settled permanently on a ranch in an outlying part of Los Angeles, where he and his wife raised horses. He was married to a Rockette named Florence Butterfield (known affectionately to family and friends as "Flip"). They remained married for 41 years, until his death. From his arrival in California he played an important role in the West Coast school of jazz.
This song was included on The West Coast Sound (subtitled Volume 1) it was recorded at sessions in 1953 and 1955. The album includes contributions from a lot of different musicians. On piano is a guy named Marty Paich he is the father of David Paich, a founding member of the rock band Toto.
The song itself is a 1938 song composed by Richard Rodgers, with lyrics by Lorenz Hart for the musical I Married an Angel where it was introduced by Dennis King and Vivienne Segal.

Graham Parker is an English singer-songwriter from Hackney, London. He turned 73 last November.
He is probably best known as the lead singer of Graham Parker & the Rumour.
He has had many different lifetimes in the music business. He has released 5 albums with The Rumour, then 2 solo albums. 1 album with Graham Parker & The Shot, then 8 solo albums. 1 album with Graham Parker & The Figgs, then 3 solo albums. 2 more albums with The Rumour followed by 1 album with The Goldtops then a solo album & another with The Goldtops.
This song comes from his 2nd set of solo albums. It was called The Mona Lisa's Sister & was released in 1988. He seemed to have a bit more luck on the US charts than in his native Britain. The album landed at 77 here & failed to chart at all over there. In fact, he charted for the final time in the UK in 1982. He had his biggest chart successes in both the US & UK when he was involved with The Rumour.

Elvis received a notice from the Memphis draft board on January 8, 1957. The board announced his 1A classification and his possible draft before the end of the year. This album & this song marked his return to music after his discharge.
Elvis Is Back! is his 4th studio album & was released on April 8, 1960. It was his first album of new material since 1958's King Creole soundtrack, as well as his first to be recorded and released in stereophonic sound.
The session personnel were guitarist Scotty Moore, drummer D.J. Fontana, pianist Floyd Cramer, guitarist Hank Garland, bassist Bobby Moore, percussionist Buddy Harman and the backing group The Jordanaires. To prevent possible disruption by fans, the musicians were initially told they were going to play on a Jim Reeves session. The Colonel had them bussed to Nashville from Memphis for the recording sessions.
The album landed at #2 & has been certified Gold. This song was released as a single & landed at #16, but it wasn’t released until 1964. The song had previously hit #2 on the R&B charts back in 1954 when Clyde McPhatter & The Drifters had a hit with it.

Dave Edmunds began making music with his 1st band back in 1954 as a 10 year old kid. He is still with us, still making music & he turned 80 last April.
Despite what this video says about this album being released in 2020, it actually came out in 1977. It was his 3rd solo album.
He was a member of the group Rockpile with Nick Lowe ,Billy Bremner and Terry Williams. Because Edmunds and Lowe signed to different record labels that year, they could not record as Rockpile until 1980, but many of their solo LPs were group recordings. Terry Williams & Nick Lowe both play on this album. It can all get confusing but music contracts always seem to be that way.

Summertime was composed in 1934 by George Gershwin for the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess. The lyrics are by DuBose Heyward, the author of the novel Porgy on which the opera was based, and Ira Gershwin.
The song was recorded for the first time by Abbie Mitchell on July 19, 1935, with George Gershwin playing the piano and conducting the orchestra. But it is one of the most covered songs ever.
The number of recordings vary by source; while older data is restricted to commercial releases, newer sources may include versions self-published online. The Jazz Discography in 2005 listed 1,161 official releases, ranking the song fourth among jazz standards. Joe Nocera in 2012 said there were "over 25,000" recordings. Guinness World Records lists the website's 2017 figure of 67,591 as the world record total.
I have quite a few versions lined up, but I promise to keep it fewer than 67,000!
Billie Holiday released her version as a single back in 1936. It landed at #12 on the US Pop Charts. Other than Billie on vocals, this version includes Pete Peterson on bass, Artie Shaw clarinet, Cozy Cole drums, Dick McDonough guitar, Joe Bushkin piano, & Bunny Berigan on trumpet.

Ben Webster was a jazz tenor saxophonist from Kansas City, Missouri. It’s pretty incredible how many times we see something similar to this happen. He suffered a stroke in Amsterdam in September 1973, following a performance at the Twee Spieghels in Leiden, and died on September 20, he was 64.
Early in his life he studied violin, learned how to play blues on the piano from Pete Johnson, and received saxophone lessons from Budd Johnson. He played with Lester Young in the Young Family Band. He recorded with Blanche Calloway and became a member of the Bennie Moten Orchestra with Count Basie, Hot Lips Page, and Walter Page. During the 1930s, he played in bands led by Willie Bryant, Benny Carter, Cab Calloway, Fletcher Henderson, Andy Kirk, and Teddy Wilson.
He used the same saxophone from 1938 until his death in 1973. He left instructions that the horn was never to be played again. It is on display in the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey.
He recorded tons of solo albums, other albums as a part of someone else’s orchestra, & still more albums as a sideman on other artists records.
This song comes from an album called Ben Webster Meets Oscar Peterson. It was recorded on November 6, 1959 and released the following year.
Other than Ben on Sax, the Oscar Peterson Trio were, Oscar Peterson – piano, Ray Brown – double bass, & Ed Thigpen – drums.

This was the 1st charting single from The Crickets, it was also the only #1 hit for the band. It topped the charts in August 1957. It also hit #1 in the UK & landed at #2 on the US R&B Charts & in Australia & Canada. It was their biggest hit on all of those charts.
At this point in their career due to contractual issues, Buddy Holly got top billing when singles were released on The Coral Label, The Crickets got billed on songs released on the Brunswick label, like this one.
The song was song written by Buddy and the drummer for the group, Jerry Allison. The band’s producer, Norman Petty, was credited as a co-writer, although he did not contribute to the composition. Norman Petty was pretty famous for grabbing credits for himself on a lot of stuff he didn’t write. There were royalties involved after all.
In the film The Searchers, starring John Wayne, Wayne repeatedly used the phrase "that'll be the day". This line of dialogue inspired the song.

XTC was an English rock band formed in Swindon in 1972 & ending in 2006. The group was founded by Andy Partridge – vocals, guitar & Colin Moulding – vocals, bass guitar. They were the only members to remain in the band for its entirety.
Despite their "Englishness", the group's fanbase has been more concentrated in the US than the UK. They refused to conform to punk's simplicity, we were trying to push music into a new area. And so we had to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous name calling because we refused to just play stupid.
During their career they released 14 studio albums, 2 Live albums & 40 singles. This song comes from Skylarking, it was their 9th studio album & was released 27 October 1986, it landed at #70 here in the states & #90 over in the UK. The album was produced by Todd Rundgren.
At this point the two original members were joined by Dave Gregory – vocals, guitar, piano, & synthesizers.
There was an argument over the lyric "silent film of melting miracle play". Rundgren was unaware that "Miracle Plays" were biblical performances from the Medieval times, and thinking that Partridge was mistaken, requested that it be changed to "passion play". Partridge refused because he wanted to maintain the alliteration in "melting miracle".

Graham Parker had his most commercially successful period during the 80’s. Unfortunately this song comes from his debut album called Howlin' Wind, it was released in 1976. The album finished fourth in The Village Voice's 1976 Jazz & Pop critics' poll of the year's best albums, but it didn’t chart anywhere.
Graham wrote all the songs & The Rumour were the backing musicians. The group was Brinsley Schwarz – guitar, Hammond organ, backing vocals, Bob Andrews – Lowrey organ, Hammond organ, piano, backing vocals, Martin Belmont – guitar, backing vocals, Steve Goulding – drums, backing vocals, & Andrew Bodnar – Fender bass.
On this particular song we also have Noel Brown on slide guitar & Dave Edmunds on guitar.

Way back in the dark ages of 1973 a band named Pink Floyd released an album called Dark Side Of The Moon. It was their 8th studio album. The album hit the top 3 on multiple charts all around the world including a #1 position on the Top 200 here in the states. It has sold 45 million copies worldwide with over 8 million in sales here in the states.
The album went on to set records. It remained in the Billboard 200 albums chart for 736 nonconsecutive weeks (from 17 March 1973 to 16 July 1988). Of those first 736 charted weeks, the album had two consecutive runs in the Billboard 200 chart: 84 weeks (from 17 March 1973 to 19 October 1974) and 593 weeks (from 18 December 1976 to 23 April 1988). It made its final appearance in the Billboard 200 albums chart during its initial run on the week ending 8 October 1988, in its 741st charted week.
But it wasn’t finished yet, on the week of 5 May 2006 it charted for the 1,716th week. Don’t believe anything will ever come close.
Engineer Alan Parsons received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Engineered Recording, Non-Classical for the album.
Drummer Nick Mason said in an interview that when they finished the album, the band felt confident it was their best work to date, but were surprised by its commercial success. He said it was "not only about being a good album but also about being in the right place at the right time".

The Ever Popular Tortured Artist Effect is Todd Rundgren's 10th studio album, released in December 1982.
Considering it a contractual obligation, he spent little time working on Tortured Artist (hence the title). However, the album was generally well-received, and he had a hit with the song linked to here.
The album landed at #66 & the single got to #63.
The whole album was Todd. He produced it, engineered it, played all the instruments & sang all the lyrics.
The song is played in Lambeau Field after the Green Bay Packers score a touchdown. A tradition that officially started in 1995, the song has become an iconic part of the Packers fan experience.

Pretty Things was an English rock band formed in September 1963 in Sidcup, Kent. They were named after Bo Diddley's 1955 song "Pretty Thing".
This band has been up & down & had a lot of different members, leading to their history being broken up into incarnations. They were last active in 2020.
During their career they released 14 studio albums, 14 Live albums & 34 singles. This song comes from their 4th studio album, It was called S.F. Sorrow & came out on Dec. 6, 1968. They had just 2 albums to chart here in the states & that doesn’t happen until 1974 & 1976,they had the same lack of chart success in the UK.
This album was known as one of the first rock operas ever released. It explores the life of a single character "from rural birth to Prodigal's Oliver Twist freakout”.
The album got relatively positive reviews from here in the states except from Lester Bangs at Rolling Stone who had this to say: He termed it "an ultra-pretentious concept album, complete with strained 'story' [...] like some grossly puerile cross between the Bee Gees, Tommy, and the Moody Blues" and suggested that the band "should be shot for what they've done to English rock lyrics."
The album was produced by Norman Smith who had previously engineered all the Beatles albums up through 1965. He also had a hit single recording as Hurricane Smith, with "Oh Babe, What Would You Say" in 1972.

Gene Gunnels – drums, percussion, vocals, Randy Seol – drums, vibes, percussion, vocals, Mark Weitz – keyboard, vocals, George Bunnell – bass, rhythm guitars, vocals, & Steve Bartek – guitars, flute, producer , have all been there since 1967. Guitar player Ed King, who is probably best known for being a member of Lynyrd Skynyrd passed away in 2018.
This song comes from their 1968 album "Wake Up...It's Tomorrow". It was the 2nd studio album from them.
This song was released as a single & made it to #23. It was their 2nd & final top 40 hit following Incense & Peppermints. Ed King & Mark Weitz wrote it. The album did not chart.

The Platters are a vocal group formed in L.A. in 1952.
There is still a group calling themselves The Platters & still touring, but none of the originals are still alive. Over the years there have been multiple groups using the name at the same time & multiple lawsuits ensued over who had the right to call themselves The Platters.
At the time of this recording the group consisted of Tony Williams Lead singer (passed away in 1992 aged 64), Herb Reed (passed away in 2012 age 83), David Lynch (died in 1981 age 59) , Paul Robi (died in 1989 age 57), & Zola Taylor (passed away in 2007 age 69).
They are one of the most successful vocal groups of the early rock and roll era. They have gone through multiple line-ups over the years, earning it the branding tag "Many Voices One Name". The most successful grouping were the folks named above.
They had 40 charting singles on the Billboard Hot 100 between 1955 and 1967, including four #1 hits. In 1990, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Platters continue to perform around the world with Herb Reed Enterprises (an LLC set up by Reed in response to numerous fake Platters groups) owning the rights and trademark to the name.
This song hit #1 for them in 1958. It was the 3rd of 4 #1 hits for the group.
