Leo Kottke was born in Athens, Georgia but his family moved so frequently that he was raised in twelve different states. He will turn 79 in September.
He was influenced by folk and delta blues music, notably that of Mississippi John Hurt. He learned to play trombone and violin before trying the guitar and developing his own unconventional picking style. And we are all the better for his decision.
Greenhouse is his 5th album, & it was released in 1972. It was recorded in three days. From the liner notes: "In the sense that my guitars were once plants, this record's a greenhouse.” It reached No. 127 on the Billboard 200 chart.

The Coasters are a rhythm and blues/rock and roll vocal group formed in L.A. in 1955. These old time black vocal groups seem to go on & on. There is still a group of folks calling themselves The Coasters that are touring today.
That means there have been multiple members of the group over the years. Leon Hughes, the last surviving member of the original Coasters, died of natural causes on March 1, 2023, at the age of 92.
There were several different groups using the name in the 1970s, touring throughout the country, though original member Carl Gardner held the legal rights to the name. Gardner continued to tour with the Coasters and made many attempts to stop bogus groups with no connection to the original group from using the name.
During their heyday they had 10 top 40 hits, 6 of which landed in the top 10. Their hits included "Searchin'", "Young Blood", "Poison Ivy", and "Yakety Yak", their most memorable songs were written by the songwriting and producing team of Leiber and Stoller.
In 1987, they were the first group inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
This song hit #37 for the group in 1961. It was written by Bobby Darin & Don Kirschner, Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller were the producers.
At this time in the history of the group they included :Baritone Vocals: Billy Guy (he passed in 2002 at the age of 66), Bass Vocals: Bobby Nunn(died in 1986 at the age of 61), Lead Vocals: Carl Gardener (died in 2011, he was 83), Tenor Vocals: Cornell Gunter (died in 1990, he was 53), & Tenor Vocals: Earl Carroll (he passed in 2012 at the age of 75).

The McCoys were a rock group formed in Union City, Indiana, in 1962 & active until 1969.
The original band members were guitarist and lead singer Richard Zehringer (later known as Rick Derringer), his brother Randy (later known as Randy Z) on drums, and bassist Dennis Kelly. This first line-up was known as The Rick Z Combo, and later as Rick and the Raiders. When Kelly left for college, the Zehringers were joined by bassist Randy Jo Hobbs, saxophonist Sean Michaels, and keyboardist Ronnie Brandon. This was the line-up that took the name of "The McCoys".
After Hang On Sloopy, the band was labeled as a bubblegum pop act, much to the disdain of the band. They ended up signing a deal with Mercury Records and recorded their last two records, Infinite McCoys (1968) and Human Ball (1969), for the label. The albums were The McCoys' attempt at making psychedelic music, neither album caught on & both failed to chart basically ending the tenure of the band.
Rick Derringer,Randy Z and Randy Hobbs went on to become Johnny Winter's band for the albums Johnny Winter And and Live Johnny Winter And in 1970 and 1971 respectively. At first, the band was supposed to be called Johnny Winter & The McCoys, but was changed due to management warning Winter about their bubblegum past, and how it could hurt his reputation as a serious musician.
This song was released as a single & hit #92 in 1967. It was a non album track. They have just 1 more song to chart after this one.

It included the hit singles Still The Same #4, Hollywood Nights #12, Old Time Rock & Roll #28 & the song linked to here #6 on the Hot 100 & a #1 hit on the Country Chart.
His original band members had been leaving due to him using studio musicians for the records he had been doing. This song is an example. The backing musicians were the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section or as they became known, “The Swampers”. Venetta Fields, Clydie King, and Shirley Matthews provided the backing vocals.
The song was originally recorded for the Night Moves album but and was held off that album because it was felt to not be a thematic fit.

Tori Amos is a singer-songwriter and pianist from Newton, North Carolina. She will be 61 next month.
As a kid won a full scholarship to the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University at the age of five, the youngest person ever to have been admitted. She had to leave at the age of eleven when her scholarship was discontinued for what Rolling Stone described as "musical insubordination".
Early in her professional career, she befriended author Neil Gaiman, who became a fan after she referred to him in the song "Tear in Your Hand" and also in print interviews. Although created before the two met, the character Delirium from Gaiman's The Sandman series is inspired by Tori.
She has been nominated for 8 Grammy Awards, but has yet to breakthrough for a win.
During her career she has released 16 studio albums, 2 Live albums, been a part of 12 soundtrack albums & released 40 singles. This song comes from her debut solo album, Little Earthquakes. It was released in 1992. The album got to #52 on the top 200 & has been certified 2 X Platinum.
In 1998, Q readers voted Little Earthquakes the 66th greatest album of all time, and in 2002 the same magazine named it the fourth greatest album of all time by a female artist. It was also voted number 73 in the third edition of Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums in 2000, and was ranked number 233 in the 2020 version of Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list. Little Earthquakes was included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
This was the 4th song released as a single. It didn’t chart here in the states but it did land at 25 in the UK making it the 1st time she hit the top 40 anywhere.
Professional wrestler Mick Foley penned an essay for Slate about how the song "changed his life"; he listened to it before a bout with Terry Funk on the IWA Japan tour in Tokyo to relieve his stress.

Captain & Tennille were a husband-and-wife team featuring "Captain" Daryl Dragon and Toni Tennille,
The two have a Beach Boys connection.
In 1972, Toni was the co-writer of an ecology-themed musical, Mother Earth. At that time, Daryl Dragon (son of composer Carmen Dragon) was working as a keyboardist for the Beach Boys, where he got his name "Captain" because he wore a ship captain's hat while performing. When her show was preparing to move from San Francisco to Southern California a call was put out for a replacement keyboardist. Daryl was between tours when he heard about the opening, met Toni in San Francisco to audition, and landed the gig.
He later recommened her to the Beach Boys when the band needed an additional keyboardist, and they hired her. She toured with them for a year, and has since been known as the Beach Boys' one and only "Beach Girl.
The two divorced in January 2014, after 39 years of marriage. He was unaware of the termination of his marriage until he was served with the divorce papers. The two remained close friends until his death from complications of kidney failure on January 2, 2019, in Prescott, Arizona. She was at his side when he died at the age of 76.
This song comes from their 4th studio album. It was called Dream & was released in 1978. The album was their lowest charting album, landing at #131. This was the 3rd single released & it just broke into the top 40 by hitting #40 exactly.

Fleetwood Mac is a British-American rock band formed in London in 1967 by guitarist and singer Peter Green.
Peter recruited drummer Mick Fleetwood, guitarist and singer Jeremy Spencer and bassist Bob Brunning, with John McVie replacing Brunning a few weeks after the band's first public appearance at the 1967 National Jazz & Blues Festival in Windsor. Guitarist and singer Danny Kirwan joined in 1968. Christine Perfect, who initially contributed as a session musician, married McVie and became an official member in July 1970 on vocals and keyboards, two months after Green left; she became known as Christine McVie.
The group has won just 1 Grammy, that was for the album Rumors, but they have been given a Grammy Hall Of Fame award.
During their career they have released 18 studio albums, 10 live albums, 23 compilation albums, 1 extended play and 62 singles.
This song was included on Then Play On. It was their 3rd studio album & was released on 19 September 1969. It was the first of their albums to feature Danny Kirwan and the last with Peter Green. Although still an official band member at the time, Jeremy Spencer did not play on the album apart from "a couple of piano things" (according to Mick Fleetwood in Q magazine in 1990).
The album charted at #109 here in the states, #4 in the UK.
At the time of this record the group members were Peter Green – vocals, guitar, harmonica, six string bass, percussion, cello on "Oh Well (Part 2)", Danny Kirwan – vocals, guitar, John McVie – bass guitar, Mick Fleetwood – drums, percussion, & Jeremy Spencer – piano on "Oh Well (Part 2)". Christine Perfect is uncredited but does play piano.

Blue Öyster Cult is a hard rock band formed on Long Island in Stony Brook, New York, in 1967. They are still together & currently on tour.
Their longest-lasting and the most commercially successful lineup included Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser (lead guitar, vocals), Eric Bloom (lead vocals, "stun guitar", keyboards, synthesizer), Allen Lanier (keyboards, rhythm guitar), Joe Bouchard (bass, vocals, keyboards), and Albert Bouchard (drums, percussion, vocals, miscellaneous instruments). That is the lineup featured on this song.
The band's current lineup still includes Eric Bloom and “Buck Dharma” Roeser.
Their hook-and-cross logo was designed by fellow Stony Brook student Bill Gawlik for his master's thesis in January 1972, and appears on all of the band's albums. In Greek mythology, "... the hook-and-cross symbol is that of Kronos (Cronus), the king of the Titans and father of Zeus ... and is the alchemical symbol for lead (a heavy metal), one of the heaviest of metals.
They have released 16 studio albums, the most recent one being released earlier this year entitled Ghost Stories. This song comes from their self - titled debut album from 1972. The album came in at #172, the only single released was Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll, it did not chart.
Guitarist Buck Dharma explains this song as originating in an event witnessed by lyricist/manager Sandy Pearlman in which a drug was passed between partners during a kiss. The term "redcap" was supposedly slang for a type of barbiturate; however, "redcap" usually referred to the drug Dalmane.

Creedence Clearwater Revival was a rock band formed in El Cerrito, California. The band was first called the Blue Velvets and later as the Golliwogs, before settling on Creedence Clearwater Revival in 1967.
They disbanded acrimoniously in late 1972 after four years of success. Tom Fogerty left the previous year, and John Fogerty was at odds with the remaining members over matters of business and artistic control, all of which resulted in lawsuits among the former bandmates.
But they had some pretty spectacular successes during their short time together. On their 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list, Rolling Stone included "Fortunate Son" at number 99, "Proud Mary" at number 155, "Who'll Stop the Rain" at number 188, and "Bad Moon Rising" at number 355.
"Fortunate Son" was added to the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry of sound recordings that "are culturally, historically, or aesthetically important" in 2013.
"Fortunate Son", "Proud Mary", and Cosmo's Factory have all been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
The band was inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1993.
Between July 1968 & April 1972 they released 7 studio albums & 29 singles. All of their albums have been certified Gold or better. This song was a part of Cosmos Factory. It was their 5th album & it was released in July 1970. The album spent 8 weeks at #1 & has been certified 4 X Platinum.
From the album they released 3 double A side singles. Travelin Band/Who’ll Stop The Rain hit #2, Up Around The Bend/Run Through The Jungle #4, Lookin Out My Back Door/Long As I Can See The Light #2.
Strangely enough the band never had a #1 hit single on the Hot 100.

Rudy Vallée was a singer, saxophonist, bandleader, actor, and entertainer from Island Pond, Vermont. He died of cancer on July 3, 1986 while watching the televised centennial ceremonies of the restored Statue of Liberty. His wife Eleanor said that his last words were: "I wish we could be there; you know how I love a party." He was 3 weeks shy of turning 85.
He was the first male singer to rise from local radio broadcasts in New York City to national popularity as a "crooner".
In 1929, he began hosting The Fleischmann's Yeast Hour, a popular radio show with guests such as Fay Wray and Richard Cromwell in dramatic skits. He continued hosting radio shows such as the Royal Gelatin Hour, Vallee Varieties, and The Rudy Vallee Show through the 1930s and 1940s.
For his work in radio, he was inducted into the Vermont Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2011.
This song was released as the B side to a single called Weary River. It landed at # 2 in 1929. He wrote the lyrics & recorded the song with his orchestra The Connecticut Yankees. These were his first recordings for RCA Victor.
The song was also part of the sound track of the films My Own Private Idaho, "Tomorrow Is Another Day" and Bonnie and Clyde.

Johnny Copeland was a blues guitarist and singer from Haynesville, Louisiana. He died July 3, 1997, aged 60, from complications of a heart transplanted six months earlier.
In 1983, he was named Blues Entertainer of the Year by the Blues Foundation. In 2017, he was posthumously inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame.
He was a solo artist but he also recorded with Albert Collins and Robert Cray, winning a Grammy in 1987 for Best Traditional Blues Album, for the album Showdown!.
This song comes from an album called When The Rain Starts Fallin'. I have found 3 different sources for this album, 1 says the album came out in 1981, another says 1988 & the 3rd one says 1991. Pick your poison.

The music industry sure does have some strange goings on.
Even though this song was released by a group called The Rinky Dinks, it was actually Bobby Darin.
Bobby took the song to Brunswick Records, but he was under contract with Atco Records. Brunswick released a recording of it crediting the "Ding Dongs". New York disc jockeys liked the record, and when Atco discovered the deception Brunswick was forced to turn over the masters to Atco, which released the record, crediting the "Rinky Dinks".

Billy Stewart was a R&B singer and pianist from Washington, D.C..
He died in a car accident in January 1970, at age 32. The accident happened when his car left the highway, ran along the median strip at a slight angle to the highway, struck the bridge abutment, and then plunged into the river, killing Billy and three members of his band instantly.
Bo Diddley has been credited with discovering him playing piano in Washington, D.C., and inviting him to be one of his backup musicians. This led to a recording contract with Diddley's label, Chess Records and Bo played guitar on Billy's 1956 recording of "Billy's Blues".
He was inducted into the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame in 2021.
He released this song as a single in 1967. It hit #79 on the Hot 100 & #41 on the R&B Chart.
The song goes back to 1935. It was written Pinetop Sparks and his brother Milton. It was first performed in the taverns of St. Louis by the Sparks brothers and was recorded July 28, 1935 by Pinetop with Henry Townsend on guitar.
The song was inducted into the Blues Hall Of Fame in 2019. The induction statement includes:
"Everyday I Have the Blues" is one of the most ubiquitous of all blues songs, a required number in the repertoires of the countless bar and lounge bands of many genres. Its late entry into the Blues Hall of Fame reflects the fact that no strong consensus emerged as to which of the hundreds of recorded versions was most deserving. But it often is associated with B.B. King, and so the first of his own many versions gets the honors.
