ack, this ended up longer that I anticipated lol.. sorry..
Kate Barnette / Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo – Benatar’s Heartbreaker
First of all, wow Pat can still belt it out! She and Neil look amazing too, their story is so touching. They have been together for like nearly all my life that says something in this industry. Had a small giggle when she walked in and I saw her “sensible shoes” then her rock diva boots on stage.. you go girl! Secondly.. Kate is quirky, cute, and she has talent but has a long way to go. You can’t expect someone that you would see in coffee shops or festivals to go toe to toe with Benatar. Pat has a 5 octave vocal range and a lot of grit, not to mention she is operatically trained. This song was simply too big for Kate. When the best things the judges can say about you is “you were a nice complement to Pat” or “you looked good playing the guitar” you just know she’s not moving on. I DO however think that She should have been kept over someone that did stay.. but more later.
Walker Burroughs / Jason Mraz – Jason Mraz’s Have it All
What can I say, this kid is too cute for words at times! He and Mraz sang well together, there was no reason he shouldn’t have been moved along. Love this ginger Potter! I want him to do well, I really do, but I can see him more at home on a Broadway Stage than a concert stage and I mean that is the best way I could. He is so expression filled and has such a clear voice. If Glee wasn’t been and done, he would be such a great addition to that show, again I mean that is the BEST way. I can see this kid acting, singing, playing, all that… he has so much to offer, not a one note kinda guy.
Riley Thompson / Brett Young – Brett Young’s Like I Loved You
I am not a big country fan, so I didn’t know who Brett was.. had to google I admit. I really have little to say about her. She is just someone I have not warmed to. It was a good song for her, it was one of her better songs and performances (happy to see she wasn’t smiling all the way through it) but to me it just feels like she is a kid playing dress up and there is nothing unique or special about her. Cute kid, good voice, but no “star power.” She would have been my choice to go over Kate just based on over all showings and lack of distinctiveness. Kinda reminds me of Hannah Montana in a “she needs a Nick Kids show or something” kinda way.
Uché Ndubizu / Shaggy – I Need Your Love by Shaggy, Mohombi, Faydee and Costi
I still do not have the love for this guy that a lot have. For me it is all gimmick and less substance of who he is at his core. He goes out and plays a part, and over plays it at that. I honestly felt that Shaggy, who I guess IS still relevant (??), overshadowed him vocally. I am really kinda over seeing him grab his crotch in every performance. I remember seeing someone compare him to Lenny Kravitz, here or somewhere or something, but ouch.. poor Lenny! Uché is NO Lenny. I think besides his family, he is his own biggest fan, comes off very self absorbed on stage. That being said, off it he has a bit more of a natural air about him, maybe if we saw more of that than the turnt up wedding singer he would be more appealing to me. To each their own on this guy.. he is just not my cup of tea, and i have VERY diverse musical tastes.
Madison VanDenburg / Pat & Neil – Benatar’s We Belong
I like Madison, a lot, but this to me was not her best. Again, it is next to Pat Benatar so one has to factor that in. Had she sang alone it may have hit me differently or maybe it was the arraignment, but it was just good for me, nothing over the top spectacular. She did far better holding her own than Kate did, that is for sure. I think I would have rather Madison sang Heartbreaker, or another Benatar song We Belong wasn’t the best choice.
Shawn Robinson / Elle King – CCR’s version of Proud Mary
Ok, there is so much wrong in this showcase I don’t even know where to begin. Oh yeah I do… I do not blame Elle King for him going home like much of twitter does apparently. There was fault for the train wreck of a set on both sides that I do acknowledge. They both messed up verses. However, Shawn was one of the weakest in the field of 20 overall. I didn’t think he should have moved on to begin with, there were others with more versatility that were sent home. Was this the best song choice for him??? No it wasn’t. I DO think Elle did him a small favor by going with the CCR version over the Ike and Tina one, he would NOT have been able to pull that off at all and she clearly took note of that. Slowing it down was good for him. I get the issue with changing something last minute, but the lyrics and melody are the same, there wasn’t anything new to learn there.. but I think his not wanting to do the song in the first place hurt him more than anything. He went into the set with a chip about it. I lost a little respect for him in that as well, I thought he came across badly after hearing the choice of song. It was almost like he wanted something safe, and was being a baby about not getting a safe song. This is top 20 Buttercup, step out of your box a bit. It was doomed form that point on. I will be honest, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Elle King, if you don’t know who she is listen to the song Kocaine Karolina off Love Stuff, gets me every time. Even in all my love for her, I didn’t see why this pair even happened. It was a total mismatch for me from the beginning. Not that I can say who I would have paired Shawn with, again out of the 20 left he is in my bottom 5, I just was not drawn to his voice and his cringing openly at the song choice and clearly not knowing who Elle was on top of the fact they had her doing someone else’s songs both times.. meh… Yeah bad all the way around, but not solely Elle’s fault her was sent home, it was his time and his inability to roll with the punches only exemplified that.
Ashley Hess / Jason Mraz – Mraz’s I’m Yours
I love this girl more and more every week.. this was near perfection. I have nothing else I can say about it except maybe just yay. So YAY!
Bumbly / Shaggy – Angel by Shaggy & Rayvon
Heh, again how is this guy still relevant? He hasn’t had a top 40 single in like 20 years.. ok I take that back Angel was like 18 years ago.. and it is one of my most guilty of pleasures (next to 1D, don’t judge me please) in music, I like me some Angel. Anyone who can sing so lovingly about his girl standing there for him and waiting while he did his time (oh excuse me, use of the more poetic term ‘incarceration’) gets big props form me. This was probably one of her better showings if I may say so, and I DO like her singing in Spanish but her departure was not shocking for me, and frankly put her out of her misery early. There are far too many big talents in the field at this point.. like Shawn, she was one of the weakest. And yay for me for making it through a whole post about her and saying she looked like a low rent escort attending Romi and Michelle’s High School reunion!!! Oppps.., damn, well there goes that.
Laci Kaye Booth & Brett Young – Mercy by Brett Young
Laci is another one I am not on the bandwagon about, but this is mostly about her facial expressions that just kinda skeeve me out while she sings. She has so much teeth and gum going on its super distracting for me, and I HATE saying that because she does have an interesting voice and can sing. I am coming around on her talent but I have to not watch her.. gawd, I'm a bad person for saying these things.. but I am taken back to the Friends episode “The One With Ross's Teeth” every time I see her smile or sing... again, driving that bus to hell... She did well and did deserved to move on, she does have something about her unlike Laci, which will set her apart from other country singers.
Laine Hardy / Elle King – The Weight by The Band
This song has so many good memories for me. I like The Band, I like the song, and damn it, I like Laine. In fact, he and 2 MAYBE 3 others, are the reasons I am STILL watching (damnit!!!!!!) this season. I wasn’t sold on the arrangement and think Laine has been better in how he showcases his talents. Maybe it was the inclusion of the partners that gave me such lackluster opinions of most of the 10, because they are not partners, they are solo performers. Laine has been compared to Elvis, Johnny Cash, but I almost feel more of a Bruce vibe from him. Sure Elvis and The Man in Black were southern boys.. but the way he plays and carries himself I feel so much Bruce. I never felt Johnny sounded good next to someone else, his wife aside they were perfect together (need to listen to Jackson now) lol, so that may be my issue with the duets portion of the show they don’t blend as well as they could have with their assigned partner. Elle and Laine were ok together, but apart I love the heck out of both of them. Elle and Shawn, not good together.. still shake my head at that pairing.
Kate Barnette / Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo – Benatar’s Heartbreaker
First of all, wow Pat can still belt it out! She and Neil look amazing too, their story is so touching. They have been together for like nearly all my life that says something in this industry.
