I am slowly rewatching The Crown on Netflix since season 5 is supposed to be starting in a few months. On Season 1 now. Cannot watch an episode on the same day I watch HOtD without either wondering either why Daemon is all dressed up for a formal 20th century dinner or why Prince Phillip is riding a dragon.

FireWoman - that’s all I saw for the first two episodes. It was better in the last episode, but his voice also pulls me out of the story. It’s so distinctive. I keep hearing, “Bow ties are cool.”

Much like the other "Crown Prince" I could only see Jack Randall when I watched Toby Menzies when he took over for Matt as the Duke. Both are wonderful actors but soooo distinct in who they are and look and sound.. and Toby nailed Black Jack on Outlander.

When Daemon wants to contribute to the delinquency of a minor, he really goes all out. Yikes. Viserys is looking like that rotted old lady in the bathtub from The Shining. And Alicent isn't looking very happy. When Daemon and Rhaenyra were running the streets and the fortune teller asked her "Do you wish to know your death, child?" and the dragon statue spit fire, I may have squealed. Also: they had a quick shot of a couple rats out in the street, so we're getting the Blood and Cheese storyline, right? *crossing fingers*

Blood and Cheese, what a brutal storyline I am happy that they have made the show interesting enough in the moment to keep me wanting to watch, since that lil bastard Joffrey already spoiled the whole thing for us years ago. Meh. It is still an fascinating, even if sordid, tale.

Also: they had a quick shot of a couple rats out in the street, so we're getting the Blood and Cheese storyline, right? *crossing fingers* Well, we knew (those of us who read Fire & Blood or like spoilers) this was coming. I think the way was paved by Cersei and Jaime, and all the talk in GOT about how the Targaryens often wed siblings and other relatives. I was expecting a lot of pearl clutching online, but really haven't seen much of it. I actually thought that brothel scene was pretty hot. You can definitely tell a woman filmed those sex scenes. At least I could. Milly Alcock and Matt Smith really have chemistry. I'll be curious (although a bit sad) to see if he has the same chemistry with Emma D'Arcy when they age Rhaenyra.
I thought that was a nice dichotomy between the scene with Allicent and Viserys and the brothel scene with Rhaenyra and Daemon. It reminded me of that scene in Banshee where they flipped back and forth between Hood and Siobhan in a really passionate sex scene, and Hood's "son" with Rebecca doing what Carrie Bradshaw described as "masturbating with a woman." I thought it was a nice way to make what we "should" feel is wrong feel maybe....not so wrong. Allicent was having se with her husband, but we know she had little (no?) choice in that marriage. WIth Rhaenyra, she was a willing participant. I felt sad for Allicent as she just laid there, letting it happen. She clearly cares for Viserys, but also clearly isn't getting what she needs physically.
I read a recap that said Daemon stopped with Rhaenyra in the brothel because she did something that turned him off. I thought that was a really strange take. I thought it was pretty clear that he forced himself to stop and not take things any further, not because he didn't want to, but because he felt he shouldn't. Maybe he didn't realize he was going to have quite the reaction from her that he did.
I wonder if MS is still wearing a wig or if they bleached his real hair. In that first scene in the throne room, it looked like a wig, but later on, it did look more like actual hair. I don't know which one I'd prefer - not having to sit to have a wig put on every day or having my hair bleached into oblivion! At least men can easily just shave their heads and start over.
At this point, Viserys just has parts falling off him like an old car That arm is looking pretty dire.
Poor Otto overestimated his own. Like no one would notice all of his machinations.
I seriously have to finish Fire & Blood!

I felt that he was turned off too. Almost like at first he was the one in control, and he wanted that control. After he turned her toward the wall and she tuned back and advanced on him it put her in control and that is not want he wanted. I too did feel he forced himself to stop but it was because it was no longer on his terms, but hers. He may still have wanted to go forward but it was a new set of rules.

In spite of it all I got sucked into this messy show via Matt Smith and two things:
- Thank goodness the guys from GOT are nowhere near this show, and
- Wigs.
I'm about to start the third episode.

I think we're mostly in agreement on that. I felt like he initially was in control of that situation and then, when it turned out that Rhaenyra was into it and wanted to keep going, he wasn't expecting that. He probably didn't think she'd react the way she did. I just didn't see it as being turned off. Maybe he expected her to push away at a certain point, but when she didn't, he didn't know how to react. I think it was less turned off than freaked out.

Sadly, I think this Sunday's episode is probably the last one with Milly Alcock and Emily Carey as Rhaenyra and Alicent I know they cast Milly after Emma D'Arcy and chose her, in part, because of her resemblance to Emma. From what I've seen, Emily looks a lot like Olivia Cooke, who'll play the older Alicent. Both of the younger actresses have done so well. I hope this show has given the a great career boost! I've been listening to the official podcast- new episodes drop every Sunday night after the new episode airs - and it's gotten good. Every week, they have an interview with someone from the series, either an actor or a director/producer/etc. This past week, they talked with Fabien Frankel, who plays Ser Criston Cole. He was just as lovely and charming as you'd expect.

After this episode and the previews for next week, it really does seem like a HUGE reset is coming next week! The lines seem to have been drawn really sharply between Rhaenyra and Alicent, we'll get new actresses, and it looks like Viserys will be even weaker. Frankly, I'm surprised he's even alive at this point. Poor guy can hardly stay upright.
I know that GRRM and the showrunners have referred to Ser Criston Cole as a "thug," but we didn't really see that until this episode. That murder was brutal.
I'm sad we didn't get more time with Rhea Royce before Daemon killed her. She was awesome! Clearly, his description of her wasn't actually accurate. I would totally watch a show with her character.

Joffrey seems to be an unlucky name to have in this realm. Was there something in particular that set that insanity off, or did Criston just stand there until he'd had enough and flipped? Alicent and that green dress - wow. And again with the blood and rat on the floor...I wish we had all of the episodes to watch because I'd stay home and watch them ALL.

I swear if I lived in Westeros I would NEVER attend a wedding.. or make a point to attend them all. I don't know which is more advantageous or entertaining.. :/
That green dress on Alicent was everything. All she had to do was show up and walk in, and she did just that. It was my second fave scene, the first was Rhea and Daemon. It really fills in what the book leaves out, in a good way.. well unless you are Rhea.

Alicent and that green dress - wow. And again with the blood and rat on the floor...I wish we had all of the episodes to watch because I'd stay home and watch them ALL. It felt like he was already seething at having to stand there throughout the pre-wedding celebration, after he'd made that declaration to Rhaenyra and she turned him down. Joffrey talking about the "arrangement" Rhaenyra and Laenor made was probably the final straw. He didn't want to be her side piece, so that proposition felt like a slap in the face.
The green dress was a gorgeous declaration of war!
That rat. Ick. Still, great shot.
I'll miss Milly and Emily, but they're clearly too young to play any older than they have been. Milly, in particular, is VERY young-looking. In the right clothes and makeup, she could pass for a young child. Heck, she looked like one when she and Daemon took their little tour or Flea Bottom. Someone did a graphic of the younger actresses alongside the older actresses and the resemblances are quite striking.

This show is terrible. That is all. The regurgitated themes. The sex and violence. I guess I can only stomach so much of the gore and I draw the line now. Yup, that gore, incest, mistreatment of women and the LGBTQ community is part of the franchise. In this case, I don't care enough about any of these characters to put up with it.

This is a good, and slightly spoiler-y (so, beware!) article about the characters who have been and will be recast with older actors (it's more than I thought):
Nice that Matt Smith is in the sweet spot, age-wise, that they won't need to recast Daemon. Not that they would - he's a big draw!
The official podcast is growing on me. I don't find the hosts annoying like I did in the beginning. Plus, once I listen to them discuss various parts of the episode, it makes me want to go watch it again.

Poor Ty Tennant. He finally gets a big break and steps out of his father's considerable shadow, but it's playing the most detestable character on this show, Aegon, aka Joffrey 2.0
Am I supposed to hate Alicent this much? I wonder, would she be this much of a moralistic prude if she was getting her cookie from Viserys? I mean, at this point, maybe he's leaving her alone, since parts of his body continue to fall off. Is his left arm missing now or just useless? I think Olivia Cooke is doing what she needs to do to play the role; I just don't like Alicent. I'm amazed at how gross Paddy Considine looks as Viserys when, IRL, I find him quite attractive. Viserys though, sucks.
I think Emma D'Arcy is terrific as Rhaenyra. As much as I liked Milly Alcock, it was clear the was too young - and looked even younger - to continue in the role. That first scene of the episode was really good and, I didn't realize until they were discussing it on the official podcast (guest this week: Miguel Sapochnik!) that it was all one continuous shot. I'm going to have to go back and watch again. I cringed (winced?) as Rhaenyra made her walk to Alicent, but love that she refused to give her the satisfaction.
Man, they're killing off characters left and right! The new Laena lasted less than an episode. Harwin Strong, we hardly had time to lust after you before you went up in smoke. Same with dear old dad. Larys is turning out to be a pretty evil little man. I think Alicent knew exactly what he was going to do, but is now going to pretend she didn't want him to commit murder...and also be SUPER happy that this means the way is cleared for Otto to return as Hand of the king.
Laena went out like a badass. I actually like that they changed her death from the books. Yes, many women died in childbirth, but we don't necessarily want to see it over and over again. What will happen to Vhagar now? Did I catch someone in the previews saying that someone had stolen her?
Those poor little girls. I don't have much faith in Daemon as an attentive father. Maybe they will go live with their grandparents.
That moment when Rhaenyra reached Dragonstone was pretty great.
Only four more episodes left in the season. Boo!

I had no idea that was David Tennant's son! I need to go browse the GoT wiki, I can't remember all these kids and what happens to them. Alicent is SO high and mighty. I've always seen Olivia Cooke play such sweet characters, but I think she'll do great with this one. Emma D'Arcy is perfect. Viserys can't last much longer, poor guy is looking like the CryptKeeper at this point. And again with the rat sighting...

This feels like a big step up, at least in visibility, from that. Not sure how long he'll be on the show, based on how fond they are of skipping forward in time. While David Tennant had that HUGE role as The Doctor, he's really a working actor. He does stage, movies, TV, animated stuff, which is kind of what many British actors do - it's all work. Hopefully, Ty is going to emulate his father's work ethic.
On the podcast they pointed out that the window he was "standing" ( ) in front of when Alicent interrupts him is likely the same window Tommen jumped out of. I find I'm getting so much out of the podcast. I always need to go back and re-watch the episode so I can catch all the things they talk about. Next week's guest is, IIRC, Olivia Cooke.

They sure don't give us any reason to cheer on Alicent, do they? She's pathologically jealous of Rhaenyra...wait til she finds out she married her uncle Daemon. Yikes. Aemond is turning into a little jerk, too. Stealing dragons and beating up toddlers, what a guy. Interesting reveal at the end with Laenor and Qarl! Different from the book but I'm not mad at it.

Ok, pretty much summed up all I had to say, lol. I really wanted to like Alicent, and I cannot find any reason to at this point. Her supreme righteousness has become so vile and loathsome at this point I don't think there will ever be a redemption in my eyes for her. I mourn that Laenor Rhaenyra relationship... not the fact that it wasn't going to be best for the throne and all, because it was not. But there was something almost beautiful about their understanding, openness, actual love, and mutual respect. It really showed the type of people they were deep down. I did not hate the ending either I want them both to have their happiness, and now he will have the chance. My only complaint, I still need more Graham weekly, the snippets I get are simply not enough!

I normally don't like it when shows change events from books, but I'm totally okay with them giving Laenor a (possible) happy ending....or at least the chance of one. Him still being alive changes nothing, as long as he stays "dead." The only person it hurts is whoever that was in the fireplace.
Yeah, Alicent is just getting worse and worse. I think a good amount of her hatred of Rhaenyra is also jealousy. Rhaenyra's off doing whatever (and whomever!) she wants, while Alicent is stuck with dried up old and dying Viserys.
Based on the previews, it looks like we're getting yet another time jump next week. Again, I really hope we're going to settle into one time frame at some point. This feels like a sprint through the whole book. They could have taken several seasons to get where they are and I don't think anyone would have a problem with it. The ratings have been very good, so it feels like they could take as much time and as many seasons, within reason, as they want to tell the story.
Aemond is definitely an example of the bullied becoming a bully. I don't think you can steal a dragon as large was Vhagar. The dragon chooses the rider at that point. If she didn't want him to ride her, she would have just burned him up and gone back to sleep. The fact that she followed the ships back to King's Landing says she's okay with a new rider. I still think he's a little jerk, but I don't think he stole the dragon. Who's to say Vhagar would have let one of the girls ride her?
There were stills released from a deleted scene from last week's episode that show Daemon hugging and comforting his daughters after Laena's death. I'm bummed they cut that scene. It would have added a little softness to his image. As it was, he looked pretty unfeeling.

This season really does feel rushed. There's a lot going on and they're just flying through it...

This season really does feel rushed. There's a lot going on and they're just flying through it... Well, Aemond is indeed a little turd ( - one of my favorite insults!), but I can't blame him after how he's been treated....at least up until he started beating on his little cousins. You know, bummer to lose your eye, dude, but this feels like a case of "f*cked around and found out." I think there are some vagaries with dragon riding, so I'm going to give him a pass on that part. I'm always going to feel like Targaryen beats our Velaryon on that front.
Speaking of dragons, what's going to happen to Seasmoke, Laenor's dragon? I wonder if we'll see him again. I've read about what happens in the book, but we know that's not necessarily what will happen on the show.
I know I shouldn't feel this way, but it's a fantasy TV show, so whatever, but the chemistry between Matt Smith and Emma D'Arcy is so good! it was great with Milly too. I think he just has great sexual chemistry with everyone. We're not supposed to cheer for incest but, like I said, fantasy. I'm here for it! I think Daemon and Rhaenyra will make a powerful team.
