We just saw it.
If you've read the "Talk About Your Troubles" thread, I've mentioned the hellish week we've had.
Let me just say that I enjoyed EVERY SECOND of the Downton Abbey movie. I've always been a big fan of the show, and was afraid the movie would disappoint. It didn't. It was just what my soul needed to give me something wonderful to focus on after all the literal and psychological s**t we've dealt with this week.
When we were walking out of the theater, I looked at Mr. AZC and he just smiled and said, "Yes, we can come and see it again."

I agree, AZChristian it was very enjoyable. They wrapped everything up so nicely, it was gorgeous in every way, and emotionally fulfilling. I even got a bit teary during one point. It was so nice to see all our old friends/characters again; I feel like we just picked right up after the last season. I'd like to see it again too.

I laughed and I cried and it made me feel so happy that they were all back on the BIG SCREEN even if it was just for 2 hours!!! They left so many thoughts for me that possibly and maybe and hopefully we might see all of them AGAIN!!!

When Violet's cousin said to her that the last time they spoke, they were not feeling like kissing cousins . . . I thought of this scene from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Do you have to have seen the series to watch the movie?

|
Post by AZChristian on Sept 23, 2019 13:12:33 GMT
I can now answer that with more confidence than I could have before I saw the movie.
Think about it this way. A friend invites you to a party at their house, and everyone else there has known each other for years . . . the good, the bad, and the ugly. It's a wonderful party. Some famous people are the guests of honor. There will be excellent food, a live band, and everyone is going to be all dressed up.
Will you have a wonderful time at the party? ABSOLUTELY. But on the way home from the party, your friend starts filling you in on the other guests. You've had an amazing time - the party itself was absolutely perfect. But as your friend is telling you later about the other guests, you can only think, "Wow. I wish I had known THAT before I met those folks."
That's the difference between watching the movie and watching it AFTER you've watched the whole series. The movie (the party) was fantastic all on its own. But the movie AFTER watching the entire series is like going to a family reunion where you already know almost everyone there.

If you don't have time to binge the whole series before going to the movie, check this out for a 14-minute amusing summary. At least you'll know who some of the characters are.

Thanks for the link. I'd heard of this, but not seen it yet. It was wonderful . . . as is everything Downton in my book.

Finally got to see this today! I was waiting to go with family members. They enjoyed it to. I, like several of you, left wanting to see it again. I loved it. I hope it does well enough that they'll do another. I didn't watch when it was on PBS. I started binge watching it when I visited my mom earlier this year. I've watched the whole thing 3 times since April! I knew I wouldn't remember enough if I didn't watch it more than once. I never do. Especially this year though, my memory has been more spotty after my concussion. I'm already trying to figure out when I'll go again and with whom! I don't love seeing a movie by myself but maybe a second viewing by myself would be okay.

If I lived nearer, I'd go with you.. wouldn't a FoRT day at the movie be so much fun! There were a couple of things I missed the first time I saw it, so we're definitely going back next week to see it again to pick up on some of the clues. I'm so delighted that everyone I know who has seen it has loved it. The world needs more beautiful clothes and sisters who have stopped fighting with each other.

There were a couple of things I missed too. I was trying to be nice and take family members I thought would like it. They did like it, but they talked, and not that quietly. I was distracted a couple of times by their talking. At least they were mostly talking to each other and not me. I cannot listen to two things at one time. Usually I go with my daughter. It's not that we never whisper things to each other, we do, but we don't talk out loud. I may never take these family members to another movie!

I'm so excited to see it but just haven't had a chance yet. I'm planning to go by myself to a matinee soon. To be honest, I actually prefer going to movies alone. It's dark, you sit quietly watching. I don't want any talking. A friend who has never watched DA wants to go with me - just for something to do - but I'll find it more aggravating to coordinate going with her than it's worth.
AZ, your description of the movie after watching the series and the movie without watching the series is PERFECT. Thank you for that! It will help me explain to my friend. She asked me if it was necessary to have watched the series first and I didn't know how to respond...

AZChristian and justCoz What were some of the things you missed? I probably missed them too! Not sure I will get back again soon, just busy with school and babies! I dont know what I missed! I just know I'll notice more things the second time. I just can't remember too much about anything the first time I watch it. I'm definitely not a visual learner! My MIL and daughter on the other hand are. They remember so much about movies and shows from seeing them once. My MIL once told me all about a movie that she had watched as a teenager. I think it had been 30 years since she'd seen it. Sometimes I can barely remember things when I watched them yesterday.

Don't want to spoil things for those who haven't seen it yet, so . . . {Spoiler} I didn't remember seeing the downstairs staff actually slip the king's chef a sleeping potion - I thought he just fell asleep and they didn't wake him up.
And I remember Violet telling Mary she had been to London, but I just wanted to see if there were any "hints" in what she was doing there that would lead to her revealing her terminal illness to Mary later in the movie. And basically - I just want to see it again!!!!

While watching the movie, we were REALLY happy to watch the scene where Bertie and Edith were talking in the "folly" near the castle. Because this is US . . . THERE!!!! Attachments:

I never saw that either as in they did not show hence (I can't remember who) but Anna getting asked in the end of the movie and Anna saying what she did. (I don't think you missed anything).
On VIOLET ...... I saw NO hints at all from her as far as illness.
So IMO you missed nothing.

I even told my friend as the movie was starting, that I want to go there someday. Bucket list, I guess! You got to wander the beautiful grounds? Yes!! There were no "official" tours. You walked through the house at your own pace, and you were then free to walk around the grounds, and they WERE beautiful. They weren't quite as fancy as the royal palaces, but they were wonderful nonetheless. But -of course - the best part of the grounds was getting out of our taxi at the "car park" and walking down that pathway that we'd seen so many times on the screen. I almost expected to see one of the members of the family or staff heading towards the house. I'm so enjoying the memories of our visit there that the movie has triggered. And when you go, don't miss going downstairs to the tea room and having a scone with clotted cream and a "cuppa."

I went to go see it again today I went by myself and loved it! I realized I had seen most of it the first time, but I did miss the reveal of princess Mary to Tom, so I was glad to catch up on that part. It's such a good movie and I would love to see it a third time.
