I knew CeCe Moore from Finding Your Roots, and it's really cool to see her using genetic genealogy to solve crimes. The idea that she solved a cold case from 1987 in 2 hours is crazy! I hope what she's doing encourages people in law enforcement to utilize this technique. I don't know how else they would have caught the murderer from the first episode.

I'm probably the only one watching this show! Really though, it is EXCELLENT! I wish more people would tune in. It's like a true crime show with genealogy/DNA research thrown in. She's literally using info from commercially available DNA tests, along with genealogical research to find killers.
This, of course, only works if the investigators on the cases took evidence from which DNA can be extracted, but there are a lot of unsolved cases just sitting because the original tests run by police didn't point to a suspect in a law enforcement database. CeeCee's techniques make it possible to sort of "triangulate" to a suspect on a family tree, based on both DNA tests from Ancestry and others AND by doing the genealogical research. SO, if the killer's 2nd cousin took a DNA test, a certain amount of DNA will be shared with the killer. She can construct a family tree AND based on how much DNA is shared with the suspect, can figure out which generation/relationship they share. It's absolutely fascinating to watch and so cool to see the detectives finally be able to bring killers to justice after so many years.

I'm also watching this show. It's interesting to see how she is able to solve these crimes this way. She is likable, thorough & intelligent. I love watching how she figures it out. I'm really impressed how DNA research and Geneology have advanced in the last few years. Gives me hope for the future of crimesolving.

Count me in as someone who is watching this. Following CeCe Moore's research and investigation is positively fascinating.

I have to think these techniques could revolutionize cold case investigation, at least if biological evidence was taken and is still viable. We saw with the one case that the DNA in the sample had degraded, but she was still able to pinpoint who the murderer was.
I just keep thinking about all of those rape test kits and cold case murders sitting in evidence lockers all over the country.
I wish my science education was better than it is because I'd love to go into that field! I only did a few years as a Biology major in undergrad, so my education about genetics was pretty paltry. I was more into wildlife biology (that's where I worked before changing course in my education). I'm a crack genealogist though. What a cool career path that would be and SO fulfilling!
CeCe used similar techniques on Finding Your Roots. When Andy Samburg was on the show, he was interested in finding his mother's parents (she was adopted). CeCe used genetic genealogy to identify both of Andy's grandparents and his mom even got to meet several half-brothers. It was very cool.

This week's episode felt more like it should have been the first episode. They spent SO much time explaining CeCe's background and how her process worked. It was nearly half of the episode. It seemed like it would have fit better at the beginning of the series, although maybe they felt that the case in the first episode would grab viewers more. Maybe that's also because the case this week was a slam-dunk
The case featured this week was just sad all-around. That poor little girl. Also, the killer turned out to have a sad life. It made me wonder what might have happened if someone had intervened and gotten him some help, like a group living situation or if public mental health had stepped in when he was very young.
That family tree was bananas! Multiple families with SO MANY children. Kudos to CeCe for her skill and determination.
