The Drew Barrymore show( yes, another talk show) says Tyra is on tomorrow, I'll be interested to see how Tyra thinks it went down..😉 ^^^^ It's not like she's going to say, "Yeah, I laid a big, self-centered turd on live television." We know she's beyond delusional, so it's going to be all false modesty while Drew fawns all over her.
My mom never watches DWTS, but she tuned in Monday because there's NOTHING else on (clearly the reason the ratings were good, although I'm sure Tyra will take credit) and she thought Tyra was terrible. In the case of a new host, maybe you'd cut them some slack and say that they'll grow into it, but she's been hosting reality TV shows for over a decade. Nothing has changed. She's terrible at it. The mugging for the camera and the stupid accents and the hyperbole ("The best IN the entire world!") - we've seen it all before.
I read a review that felt like lipstick on a pig as far as Tyra's performance and the writer actually said something about how Tom probably wouldn't have been able to handle the changes due to Covid. REALLY? Who better? After all the chaos we've been dealing with, it would have been so nice to tune in Monday and have Tom there as a reassuring presence. Instead, we got The Tyra Banks Show I'm either going to DVR and ffwd or watch the dances on YouTube. One episode of her was enough.
ITA about the costumes not being great. I thought Justina's was SO unflattering. The cut out on the front hit right under her tummy and made her look like she has a gut. That color wasn't great either. She didn't let it stop her though - she was terrific. I liked her, Johnny, Skai, Kaitlyn, and Nev (who knew he had THAT in him?). We'll see how they do in week two with a lot less time to rehearse.

It's been interesting to see post-show interviews with the cast where they were fawning over Tyra. Guess they know where their bread is buttered.
I don't have live TV, so I always just watch the dances on YouTube. It works pretty well, and I won't have to see the Tyra part. I do miss seeing the feedback and scores, though. I just have to combine the videos with a recap article and try to get the full-effect.
(I did watch the full show the next day on Hulu because I was curious. Tyra wasn't as bad as I expected, but she's definitely no Tom, and that reviewer is nuts saying that Tom wouldn't have been able to handle the changes. Please!)

Honestly, I don't think Tyra did a terrible job for a first episode. So many things could have gone wrong and thrown her off balance, because hosting 2 hours of live network TV and getting it off the air on time is incredibly hard for ANYONE to attempt. There were moments where she was a little rushed, and moments where she was a little too "Tyra" -- but given everything that was going on, the show still flowed pretty smoothly.
Do I want Tom back? Hell yeah. But if Tyra learns to strike more of a balance over time and keeps the focus on the dancing, she may do okay. It's not the same, but at least the show is still going.

She admitted she was nervous, then settled in. I'll watch, because I love dancing ( and some snark) I think some of these dancers might surpise us.

This is exactly why I'm giving it another week. She wasn't terrible. She just wasn't Tom. Everything else about the show was fine and I just don't want to quit on an initial judgement of Tyra. She deserves a chance.

MFWalkoff I've had the same feeling about Tom being replaced because he dared to speak up. I can't explain the ratings increase, other than they never considered in that article that it's one of the few shows that's new right now on network TV. Very telling that producer spoke about all their updates when most were made in direct correlation with the pandemic. I also find it telling that they replaced Tom, who's 65, to make it new and fresh. It seems like ageism to me. Certainly code words for it, in my opinion. You don't see Survivor getting rid of Jeff and he's been on Survivor longer than Tom's been at DWTS. Eta: FWIW, Tyra has made the show nearly unwatchable for me. I can't fast forward enough. I am interested in what the dancers want to say so it's nearly impossible up skip her portions altogether, although I am giving it my best effort.

I'm shocked that a website that focuses on TV and presents itself of somewhat of a TV expert would write an article like that right now and ignore the reality of lack of content on TV! TV ratings have levelled out somewhat but were up BIG time due to the pandemic. Normally when DWTS premieres, it's up against The Voice, sitcoms on CBS, etc. Thanks to production schedules being delayed, it does not have any of that right now. People are discovering new content on streaming - but people who are used to "regular" tv still are hungry for new content. Couple that with people being home more these days and therefore watching more TV, and I can offer up a very simple reason that DWTS ratings are up that has nothing to do with the changes!

Also, another reason for the ratings bump could be that it's not up against The Voice. Voice has been sucking away viewers for years. Voice's new season starts Oct. 19th. We'll see how the ratings hold up then... ( EDIT: acookertv and I posted at the same time )

Yeah. I've seen no substantive changes to the show other than the ones having to do with the pandemic as others have mentioned. And Tyra isn't going to bring in any new demographic. Her demographic is/was much the same as Tom's middle-aged to older people (of which I am one) are the ones who used to watch her on Top Model, and we don't even like her much any more. I'm sure she's not bringing in any young 'uns. I have no idea what they were thinking, but none of the reasons he gave made sense. It likely did have to do with Tom speaking up about Spicer.
