Just watched the first two episodes and wow, this series is grim. A sad-eyed Matthew Rhys plays the title character in what's supposed to be an "origin" story, but this is nothing like the polished attorney Perry Mason from the original series.
Still, the cast is fantastic so I'll keep with it for now.
I was half-watching the first episode but it didn't hold my attention. My husband watched the second episode and agreed it was pretty grim. I am not sure he will continue to watch. Maybe I should give it another chance when I'm not so distracted. Oh, and why is Perry a private detective in this remake and not an attorney?
Okay, now I can see where they're going with this. *poof* You're a lawyer!
Good episode, though. Also, Della is awesome.
I think this was the episode where it all started to come into focus. I wasn’t sold on why there needed to be another Perry Mason series, but watched because the cast is terrific. Now I’m totally on board. ITA about Juliet Rylance’s Della (incredible acting genes in her family!). That scene where she finds EB just broke my heart.
I’m curious to see what’s going to happen with Sister Alice. I’d she going to pull off a miracle or be unmasked as a con artist? I’m sort of horrified that Lily Taylor is old enough to play Tatiana Maslany’s mother because that means *I* am old enough to be her mother too! (although I’m younger than LT <— just had to get that in there!)
