Flower Power - Contestants are faced with exotic challenges that produce surprising results on the runway.
(Or, is it a repeat of the Season 2 flower challenge?)
Enjoy the show!

Nice twist on what would have been a repeat of Season 2's Flower challenge. So far, every challenge this season has been great.
I have to admit I'm intrigued by the guest. Being an artist whose medium of choice is flowers (organic in nature and beautiful until decay)? That's fabulous!

Project Runway: Lets have a challenge where they have to create their own floral pattern!
Also Project Runway: I know! Let's award the person who did the absolute least towards the theme!
Ugh.

I had a problem with the winner, too. Not that the outfit wasn't impressive and well-made, but unless you were practically on top of that print, you couldn't tell it was floral at all. There were other ways she might have made the floral print more abstract if she didn't care for florals. I also thought they were supposed to be inspired by the flowers that were there. She ignored that entirely and based it on a trellis she remembered from childhood, which she basically just turned into a big check with tiny flowers/leaves on it. For a different challenge, I'd have no problem with her winning. But it seemed like she just ignored the challenge altogether and wasn't penalized for that at all. On the other hand, I also thought there were others who might have made the top three who didn't make it at all, so I'm not sure who I'd have had win instead of her either. I still like Aaron's work--his designs and his tailoring--and he seems to be ignored. He took Christian's suggestions and ran with them, reworked his look to make it more youthful, and I liked how he used that bordered print in different ways.
I also noticed the same designer asked for a model change who asked for the first model change--no high-toned reason for it this time. He just wanted a different model than the one he got. This time he got shot down, too. They really need to stop that nonsense. Go back to the button bag, so it's not about who rushes the table first and grabs the model they want. Just let it be luck of the draw as it should be. Or rotate the models so everyone knows that eventually they're going to get model X and until then, they just have to wait. Anything so they don't have to be pushing and shoving to get to the model cards and then start negotiating to get the model they actually did want.

Nina answered the issue about the floral. It really wasn't written that it had to be a loud , bold floral. The winner had flowers on her material and it was perfectly tailored so I don't see how they could have given the win to either of the other two. I was surprised the woman with the flowy "nightgown and robe"...so to speak, got all of that outfit out of 5 yards of fabric. I know they could use mini Mood to supplement the self designed fabric, but she used a lot for the robe.
Now Rajje's gown should not have been in the top. He gave us a mermaid gown----many styles of which are available in any bridal salon---in white and strapless. He used a not- especially- pretty fabric and attached sleeves but it was still just a standard mermaid.
I also liked Aaron's final outfit. He really did a great job of using the border print in interesting ways.

Rajje's gown belonged at the top because as Nina pointed out his tailoring on it was divine. Yes, it had a mermaid silhouette but he elevated it with the petal like sleeves and the money moment was how he lined up the pattern in different directions for the sleeves, main part of the dress, and the "tail." I would have swapped out the Pyjamas lady for Aaron's dress because it was lovely.
Found out tonight that the Rainbow Brite lady is originally from Japan and then all of a sudden everything about her aesthetic makes sense. There's a certain Tokyo street fashion genre that is brightly colored with different prints used together with slightly juvenile tailoring and I feel uncomfortable that she's being judged under more Western standards, especially considering the dress she made wasn't that horrible. In fact, no one was absolutely horrible this week; I'm just upset because everyone in the bottom three used more florals than the winning garment.

The petal like sleeves were unlined, though, and that bothered me. I could picture a scarlet or fushia lining so when her arms moved that is what flashed not the backside of the print.

I agree about Aaron. Every one of his designs have been solid.
As for Rajje, I have to say I was shocked that he was on top. They always complain about designs not being fresh or new and IMO there was nothing fresh or new in his mermaid dress. I liked nothing about it.

She’s not originally from Japan - she’s from Florida. She only moved to Japan a year ago after her military husband was stationed there. The winning designer should not have won - for a floral challenge you should be able to see the flower(s) from more than three inches away.

For a design-your-own-print in a floral theme, that winning look was such a let down for me. I could not believe they chose it to win. VERY disappointing.
I loved how many of them were taking photos from different angles, such as throwing them up in the air and photographing them against the blue sky. They had such creative ideas! Even the black and white print, though shocking at first, turned out pretty (though the final look wasn't as pretty to me). I love the border print too, and would have never thought to do that myself!
The robe and nightgown look was gorgeous. I loved that print so much!

I have to admit, Darren turned out to be a good egg. It seems like he went on the show more for experience's sake and I love people like that. He was very gracious when he lost and had a good outlook on the whole situation. I'm glad he had a good experience and will continue to learn and create.

Prajje's dress was well tailored, and he did some interesting things with the direction of the pattern, but they were supposed to make something high-fashion, and I thought it missed the mark from that perspective. I was shocked when he was in the top. I think the show knew that lots of people would think his was a bottom look, and that's why they saved him and print lady for last.
I was sad that the woman from Afghanistan didn't listen to Christian when he suggested she lose the overskirt. It was so much better without it

As soon as I saw that first look come out onto the runway, I felt it was going to win. I saw it had next-to-nothing to do with the theme of the challenge, and so I knew the judges would gush all over it. It was pretty and well-tailored, but why give the contestants a theme if the judges themselves are not going to adhere to it? The lady who designs grown-up children’s clothes needs to be sent home. This show is out of her league. I sewed better garments in my 8th grade Home Economics class. My favorite design this week was the one that I pictured below. I thought it was creative. I also loved the one that looked like pajamas, as well as Aaron’s beautiful design. I’m going to make an early guess that Aaron wins the season. He’s consistently talented.

Katie, as a fabric designer was edited to be on top on this one. I think it's noteworthy that she (and everyone else) had to work with people who interpreted their designs. She is used to creating her own prints. I am not a fan of her scallops and collars and the shapes she created for this episode.
The clothing shop that I work at does have leather cut out shape necklaces that are are really cool and add an interesting accent to the tops and dresses they are styled with so I sort of get her thing with those leather scallops but they were a miss for me and clearly a miss for the judges. She is not a traditional type of designer and will have a tough time making it much farther unless she can figure out how to get her proportions worked out.
