It's not like I need MORE stuff to watch, but I couldn't resist Hulu's 99 cents/month for one year deal. At least I can catch up on The Handmaid's Tale (I've only watched the first two seasons) and whatever else Hulu has to offer...

Only Murders in the Building with Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez season 3 - love the nod to Bob Fosse in season 3, love seeing Meryl Streep in anything. Does it get corny, silly at times? Yes, but it’s an easy to watch cozy mystery, with some laughs thrown in. I’m enjoying this series. Haven’t been on Hulu since the final season of Veronica Mars was released a few years ago….was that pre-Covid? Anyway, an enjoyable, fun, Murder Mystery series.

Is anyone watching Feud: Capote and the Swans? Demi Moore was totally unrecognizable as Ann Wentworth. I watched the whole first episode and didn't realize that was her until I looked at the cast list. I went back to watch the segment where she had the biggest part, and I still couldn't tell it was her. I wonder if they did some makeup tricks or prosthetics of some sort to change her appearance. It was very strange to look right at her and not see "her."
I'm still deciding what I think of the show in general. I think it's interesting, and it's certainly fun to see the big hair and fashions of the '60s. I need to watch another episode or two to decide what I think for sure. There's certainly interesting intrigue involving historical people, which is fascinating.

I also just watched the documentary Dior and I, which follows Raf Simons as he produces his first collection as Creative Director at Dior starting in 2012. It's a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the world of couture. Kind of like Project Runway on steroids.

Oooh! I have to watch that!
I watched the first episode of The Swans, and I wish that Capote was more likeable in the show. Because it doesn't make sense with his dialogue and manner that he charmed people. So I have to just go with it. Also, poor Happy Rockefeller - how she is portrayed in this! (I just finished a book on the Rockerfellers, so this was very jarring!)
Great to see Treat Williams again. Absoultly love the fashion and jewelry! Makes me so nostalgic. My parent's friends dressed like that and went to Le Cote Basque and even as simple as a close-up of the wire to the restaurant's table lamp made me nostalgic and brought back so many memories. Although it's a little annoying that they didn't get the restaurant's layout correctly. But nailed that mural though.

There's certainly interesting intrigue involving historical people, which is fascinating. Yes, and I am HOOKED! I am completely here to see nasty toerag people get their comeuppance for a change, and I love seeing beautiful older women with actual wrinkles faffing about and being fab. Ryan Murphy might be messy, but one thing I've always applauded him for was giving older actresses meaty roles. Judging by this show, Capote was one of those fabulous b****y queens who are highly entertaining and fun...until they point their venom in your direction. Good on the Swans for freezing him out because he was their friend and confidant. They told that man things that they wouldn't tell a soul, and he betrayed them in the worse way possible. He was both loving and incredibly cruel to his lover as well and I might not be a good person because I laughed every time his BF would smack him after saying vile things about him and his family. Even so, hitting someone is terrible, so I hope he eventually just has enough and leaves him. That's not even the speculation that he printed as fact about poor Ann Wentworth, who ended up killing herself over it.
Demi Moore had a bit of a mishap at the plastic surgeons office a few years ago so I think it's 1/3 makeup, 1/3 prosthetics, and 1/3 new face. It was good to see her though, along with the "special guest star" playing the hallucination of Capote's mama. I'm mad that I have to wait until tomorrow for the new episode because I want it now!

Kao, I watched the second episode last night, and I’m hooked, too, for many of the reasons you said. Looking forward to the next episode. The cast is fabulous! EDITED TO ADD: beerbelly, i didn’t see your post before I posted this. I agree that, while amusing,Truman doesn’t seem likable enough for Babe to adore him as much as she does. That’s fun that you have memories of La Côte Basque restaurant.

Just finished the third episode about the Black and White Ball, and it goes a bit deeper into why the Swans were so drawn to him. He gave them what their husbands and so many in their circle didn't provide; honesty and trust. I LOVED how this episode was shot like a documentary, and how Capote got away with not having any of the swans as his guest of honor in a way that was both classy and face-saving. He knew exactly what to say, and how to say it. While Murphy took some liberties (Ann Wentworth and her son weren't the ones who crashed the party, it was another social climbing couple) everything was pretty much as it happened.
FX has been doing some behind the scenes looks at how the show is filmed on Youtube and resourcing old footage, and there's a great clip from CBS Morning about this episode, including the designer who sourced most of the Swan's outfits and real guests at the ball, including Candace Bergen (Note: each video is only around 5 minutes long and is interesting so watch. ) and actual footage from the ball itself.
Zac Posen was also the designer who was tasked with creating the costumes that the Swans and others are wearing in this episode, and he did a lot of research and resourcing materials to make sure everything was authentic to that period. A video of his process can also be found on YouTube.

Also, it was normal to have a 'walker,' which was a gay man who escorted you to things that one's husband didn't want to go to. And to have someone as accomplished as Capote? As your walker??? That's a huge draw. I remember my parents telling me they fought over who got to read the next New Yorker when they were excerpting In Cold Blood. Talk of the town, indeed.

Shogun starts Feb 27 can't wait. I have such fond memories of watching this. It was such a huge event as it was one of the first limited series airing multiple nights during the week.
Glad to see it will also be airing on FX for those who have regular cable as well as on Hulu and Disney+. It's smart to air on multiple platforms.

Thanks, Kao! I look forward to watching those videos. I really enjoyed this week’s episode. I, too, loved the documentary style. I felt bad for the Maysles that Truman decided to bag the documentary after they shot so much film. Does anyone know if that documentary eventually got made? (Guess I could look it up. LOL) I find myself stopping to look up characters while watching, and in the process, discovered a big goof. They referred to the woman who stole Slim’s husband as Pamela Harriman, but at the time of the Black and White Ball, she was still married to Slim’s ex. She didn’t marry Averell Harriman for another 10 years. Oops! P.S. it looks like there was a documentary that came out in 1966. A short one about half an hour long called With Love from Truman.

I've gone down the Capote rabbit hole over the past 24 hours and have read a bunch of stuff and watched a few videos including the The Capote Tapes documentary. One of the articles I read was "What’s Fact and What’s Fiction in Feud: Capote vs. the Swans" from Slate. (Link below.) You'll be happy to know, beerbelly, that according to this article, "... this story may well have some basis in truth. However, the lady in question is unlikely to have been Happy Rockefeller." It goes on to say: "In fairness, the Answered Prayers material does not mention Happy Rockefeller by name but merely refers to “the governor’s wife.” Laurence Leamer’s Capote’s Women, the source material for Feud, theorizes that the deceived husband was the former governor of New York, Averell Harriman, and the vengeful mistress his wife, Marie, another old-money aristocrat and an acquaintance of Capote’s. "Or the 'governor’s wife' may have been an amalgamation of different Bill Paley girlfriends. What is very odd is that, having decided to identify 'the governor’s wife' as Rockefeller, the show depicts her as rather zaftig and blowsy, complete with very 2024 pillowy lips, when the actual Happy was a rangy WASP who didn’t even dye her gray hair, much less resort to tweakments." slate.com/culture/2024/02/feud-capote-swans-black-white-ball-true-story.html

Feud seems very comfortable rewriting history, so I don’t know what to believe and not believe, but if Slim really had an affair with her dying best friend’s husband there’s a special place in hell for her. And if she didn’t, Ryan Murphy should be ashamed of himself for besmirching the reputation of someone who is dead and can’t defend herself.
On a different note, is anyone watching Chrissy & Dave Dine Out? So fun, and the food looks fabulous! It reminds me of a show that was on a few years back where a bunch of diverse celebrities were brought together for a meal and conversation. I can't remember who hosted it (can anyone help me out here?), but it was sometimes pretty interesting. But this time, there's the added dimension of Dave hanging in the kitchen and talking with the chef while the others chat over dinner. I've only watched one episode, but I liked it.

But this time, there's the added dimension of Dave hanging in the kitchen and talking with the chef while the others chat over dinner. I've only watched one episode, but I liked it. Not sure about the Slim/Bill thing but that scene at the end (when Capote sees Babe on the street and they have a nice chat) never happened. I agree, these are REAL people, and people watching this will automatically think it's true. Don't smear dead people for ratings! While I can't understand Slim's motivations, I can understand Babe's acceptance of it because she knew she didn't have much time left, and she wanted someone around to take care of Bill, and who better than an old friend? Which made their discussion and dance at the end more meaningful; she knew, understood, and forgave.
I googled, and one source said while a lot of stuff in the show is fictitious, some of it is based on truth. Here's an interesting article that goes into it a bit more:
They sure aren't pulling punches to make Caputo as nasty as possible. I don't blame Slim for spoiling his party plans because I was horrified when she confronted him about the story and he told her "I never let the truth get in the way of a good story." Truly a child who does awful things to the people who care about him, but yet wants to be forgiven. :/ Also, can we have a scene with Capote and his boyfriend without the boyfriend beating the crap out of him? If someone taunts you to the point that you even think of giving them a smack maybe that's not a relationship you need to be in.

I love James Baldwin and his work so this week's episode of Feud was a treat. Chris Chalk does an amazing job at bringing Baldwin to life and giving Capote his "come to Jesus" moment even if they gave him a bit of the old Magical Negro treatment on the show. Like last week's Capote/Babe interaction it never happened in real life (the show treats the entire episode up until the end like a dream sequence) but Chalk's performance is charismatic and absolutely dominates this episode. In real life, While Baldwin and Capote had a grudging respect, they didn't particularly like each other, and by the time the fictionalized visit between Baldwin and Capote took place, like many Black creatives before him Baldwin had already retired to southern France. www.esquire.com/entertainment/tv/a46927092/feud-capote-vs-the-swans-truman-capote-james-baldwin-true-story/

I enjoyed it too. I wondered while it was happening whether or not this was a real thing, so it was interesting that at the end they showed Capote in the same position in his bed as he had been in when the phone initially rang—indicating that it was, indeed, a dream.
It seemed like a clever way of getting more information, including the swans’ racism and classism as well as having Truman admit to his love-hate relationship with them, into the story without having it feel like straight exposition.

Sigh! I just watched the final episode of Feud, and what a waste of time! It was as if they contracted for a certain number of episodes and had to find some filler to use to create the last one since everything had already been said. I didn’t even watch the last 10 or so minutes of it, and I wish I’d quit a lot sooner. Definitely not worth spending time on.

I admit, I did like the closing scene with all the ladies looking on while admitting that their era was over, and walking off while the screen faded to black with the titles showing their death dates. There was a lot of scandal involved with the ashes they didn't show; apparently Jack requested his ashes but Joanna Carson only sent him half (keeping the other half for herself) and when he found out he never spoke to her again. At one point she claimed the ashes were stolen but there wasn't proof and she mysteriously "found" them days later? She also claimed to have a key to the safe deposit box where Truman allegedly placed the "Answered Prayers" manuscript but it was never found. Mess!
While the B/W Ball and Baldwin episodes are definitely worth a rewatch I'm going to pass on the rest of it.

I am reading Cecil Beaton's diaries from the 1960's and he speaks about Capote. To put it mildly, he was none too pleased with him for all the lies Truman made up almost to cause drama amonst all of his friends, especially about Cecil. They were all concerned he was taking drugs (Lee, Vreeland etc.) And Cecil thought that the B&W ball was in poor taste and all the success of In Cold Blood made Truman narcissistic. I also didn't realize that there was a movie made from In Cold Blood. (Or that Cecil Beaton abhorred Elizabeth Taylor!)
