While I wasn't opposed to Mila going home, I thought it should have been Laurence, who voiced nothing but distaste for the challenge from the very beginning and whose resulting design struck me as more depressing than whimsical. At least Mila tried to go for something a little more whimsical, although the execution did't come off as she'd hoped. Had she been able to make the skirt work, perhaps she wouldn't have gone home, as in that case, she'd have made a greater effort to use genuinely non-traditional materials than Laurent did.
I do agree with the judges that this was a more successful non-traditional materials challenges they've done, however. And I really do want to see Nina sweep into work some day in Kayne's Panda de Ville gown.

I thought there were some good looks.
I am not a vocal environmentalist but the show generated over $20,000 of waste added to the landfills. I recall that they have used recycling warehouses in the past as well as other things but never a fancy store with very expensive products that got ripped to shreds.
Glad that V. went from bottom three to the winner and Kayne is the only person to be in the top tier both shows.
While Rami told his poignant story about his joy in seeing kites, I think he teared up more because he was in the bottom three- he really looked shocked when his name was announced. I can't remember the details of his journey to coming in second on season 4, but he may never have been in the bottom before.
Korto, Hester and Anna are the only three not for have been in either the top tier or the bottom tier.

Such whimsy, such imagination! I really enjoyed this episodes’s “unconventional materials” challenge because these are really talented folks. There were several people in the middle who had a very fun look; Korto, Bishme and whoever did the look with cards stuck out in particular. I like how there’s more shots at the actual art construction this season; I always enjoy information on concept, so this is enjoyable to me. LOL @ Christian taking Anna aside and telling her “It’s not about the baby, your look is a mess?” Everyone in the top three truly belonged there, I loved Prajje’s explanation that his design originated in not having toys growing up, because it forced him to be creative in other ways. The teacup design of Brittany’s was really cute, and the “Cruella de Panda” look of Kanye was marvelous! The winning look gave me such joy. I could see it in a Fellini film easily. Those Dino shoulders, those scales…so chic and flawless!
It’s sad to say, but everyone’s look said “I put an effort in this” while the bottom two were seriously lackluster. The people in the bottom…there was a certain lack of care that landed those two people there. To be honest, I would have been okay with either one going home except one person had a better explanation for their work than the other.

It should really have been Anna going home. Looking at that dress (mess), it was not whimsical, fun, toy-like at all, and what was HER point of view? Isn't that what they said was missing with Mila's? At least Mila's skirt had an actual idea, used actual toys. Anna's mess before Christian talked to her was sending her home most certainly, but just because she fixed it in a way, she ended up "safe"??? It was horrible. She's a mess this year herself; I'm not caring for her or her designs. She should go home to that cute baby.
I liked the winning look! It was so cute! And it was funny how Christian reacted negatively at first when hearing about the plan, but then after seeing the way he designed that dinosaur jacket, he was impressed! LOL! I didn't mind Fabio's card dress either, especially how he created a new shape and just didn't do a basic dress form. Korto's rollercoaster or track was super cute too! I wasn't a huge fan of Prajje's outfit, but I understand that he did work a lot on it. Brittany's dress should've just been safe, not really a top 3 or 4 look, IMO. It was fine, cute, but it was not at all innovative, nothing new there. I think one of the judges (or someone else?) even said that she just put things onto the muslin. Laurence did a lot of putsy work on her outfit too, and painted on it, and I didn't think it was all that bad. Maybe not her best, but she had an idea and executed it.
Kayne's was impressive too, because of the new shape of the hips and all the work he did on the front of that dress. I like his "reveals" too, they make for a fun runway; those pandas were hilarious. Hester's model threw off her jacket which amused people, but her keychain skirt wasn't much better than the puzzle skirt. Guess she had a point of view? Weird judging irritates me with this show, though I just love seeing what they all come up with.

I suppose what Mila and Laurence have in common is not fully developing their looks. Mila's unicorn fur top is considered an afterthought, and Laurence's painting of the body of her dress wasn't. Perhaps the judges are focusing on eliminating the technically challenged?

I agree with you about Anna and Brittany, Navybelle. The fabric for Anna’s less than spectacular dress could have come from anywhere. There was no evidence that any toys had been used. I thought for sure she was toast! Same with Brittany’s. It was pretty, and conceptually more interesting than Anna’s, but I thought the point this time around was to let the use of toys be obvious and have that be part of the whimsy rather than showing how you could make the unconventional materials look like regular materials.

I was wondering these things myself so I rewatched (not a hard chore, since the episode was so enjoyable) and while some of my impressions stayed the same, others changed. Kara Saun’s look was “Ugh, I’m a futuristic chick looking for some water” but was kinda okay, lol. While I admit Rami’s interpretation of kites was kinda rough looking, at the same time I could see the kites and the drama in his look, and I think that and the fact that he was able to tell the judges a story that saved him. As a creative, I know how it feels to have something that means a lot to you sentimentially not appreciated by your peers; that was heartfelt and I’m sure it influenced the judges. Upon a second look while I can appreciate the artistry and technique that went into Anna’s look it was like “Where are the toys? Where is all the fun?” I would have put her in the bottom for making such a joyless outfit. While yes, Brittany’s look consisted of stuff being “glued on the muslin” I have to point out that it takes not only a certain amount of artistic skills to have all the pieces of the mosaic boudice fit together harmoniously, the skirt also had a certain amount of sewing technique involved, so I had no problem with her being rated higher than others.
I think the difference in why Mila went home over Laurant was that Mila was basically describing what she did with the materials to create a look as opposed to relating them to the challenge. There was no story, no clear point of view, she basically said “I used X to get X effect.” After watching Laurant she also was like “Oh, I also did a thing” but the judges were able to pull a fully color story/consistent theme from Laurant’s in a way they couldn’t with Mila’s outfit; and I also noticed the detailing with the cap and back was tighter on Laurent's garment than what Mila did. I’ve noticed the judging goes more sympathetic towards people who have a strong point of view but maybe it wasn’t implemented well in the design over people who are like “I had some materials and did this.”

Kao, I agree, except for this: Was there that much difference between Anna's dress and Brittany's skirt technique other than color? Considering what Anna's dress looked like before she hustled to change it up, I think what she did was phenomenal. I like Mila and am disappointed that she was eliminated. But what the heck was she doing for two days that she couldn't have created more tiles to hang off her skirt? Didn't she have enough material to work with? I'm baffled. Just like Anna until Christian spoke up, Laurance's head isn't in the game for at least this challenge. Is it that she didn't have time to do more? I think the top three were selected, and after the judges conversed, Brittney's efforts were heavily discounted, for all she did was glue stuff on a muslin base. At least Anna sewed ugly gray gathered ruffles on an even uglier gray dress that the judges never saw. I still tend to believe the judges have decided to eliminate technically challenged contestants. They might have eliminated both Mila and Laurence, but they couldn't for the next challenge is a team challenge.

They might have eliminated both Mila and Laurence, but they couldn't for the next challenge is a team challenge. It's two different techniques (ruching for Britney skirt vs what Anna did for her dress) and both of them did a good job. My objection is while Britney's look was fun, colorful, and playful Anna's outfit was like a void sucking all the joy out of the room. Where was the fun, the whimsy, the color? If this was for a "Make a lovely evening gown" challenge Anna would have it in the bag because it really looked like she designed what she wanted to as opposed to using the challenge and the store itself as inspiration. Anna makes lovely dresses, however this particular challenge required a bit more than that.

First, I loved watching this episode. I thought it was great and became so disappointed that the judges actually eliminated a contestant. Yes, I've watched every episode of Project Runaway since Season One, Episode One, and I know they do that, but I thought there was a chance that for this episode, they wouldn't because I thought the episode was that good.
Anyway, I don't know if I'd go as far as to say Anna's dress took the joy out of the room. Was that the challenge? I'm not trying to be prickly, but I don't recall that it was, although I could be wrong. I suppose I will need to watch it again.

That winning look was absoulute genius. It gave me such joy to look at, and now I want that jacket!
You would think Anna would have taken this opportunity to use the joy she has with her child into something spectacular. Why she wasn't in the bottom was shocking. I thought Brittany was going to be pinged for using fabric, but the guest judge clearly loved it.
