It's time for KAYKO to go. When two of the judges said "WHAT are you doing??" I thought they'd criticize him, but no, they said he could win this. Umm, no, I don't think so. Not only was his performance just manic, his voice didn't sound good either during a part of it.
McKenna had some rough spots too, though she brought it at the end. Jack's was just "okay" to me, doing a Cher song was a strange choice. Mia started off the show, and did fine, but she's so extremely country that I am not her intended audience/customer.
Shania Twain? She's tiny! The blond hair looks a little off too.
Emmy did a good job with her Blink182 song. No weird notes like the others had, and I could hear her most of the time, while the background music tends to get so loud and I had trouble hearing some of the others tonight.

I thought Just Sam cut ties with Idol? Hm. I don't know anything about that, but she did sound wonderful tonight. They all said she deserved her moment, the confetti, etc., so if there was bad blood, it seems better now. I was impressed. AND she looked beautiful too.

Will's voice sounded good (though they tried hard to drown him out), and he threw a few smiles in there too. Interesting how he didn't take Shania's note to sing it a bit higher. Afterwards, Katy tells him it was the right key (I'm sure Shania didn't like that!). Either way, he sounded good! KaiBrienne's story about losing a childhood friend was sure sad. I liked her performance, and she didn't hit any weird notes like the earlier contestants tonight did. She's becoming my favorite female contestant, though Julia still is awesome too.

From what I heard, Just Sam had some mental problems after her win. Good on AI for sticking by her. I’m glad Kayko was tossed. He was fun and had his moment in the sun but time to tighten the ship. I was sorry to see Mia go. Julia has a big voice but it doesn’t seem like she understands that you don’t always have to belt it at full volume. She reminded Lionel of Aretha at her audition. Maybe she should study her a a little. I still like Jack best but his Cher song wasn’t stellar. I’m curious what the judges will choose for him to sing tonight.

April 28, 2024: The Top 10
1. Will Moseley: Travis Tritt is an anomaly to me. He’s anti-vaccines (which I find irresponsible) but is also one hell of a singer. I roomed with my best friend Walter back in college. His girl, Linda, was a Travis Tritt fan and would spend all her disposable income traveling to his concerts. One day Walter was sick and couldn’t travel so I took his place even though I'd never heard him sing before. When we arrived at the concert, Linda had front row seats. When Travis came out, he looked at her and recognized her immediately, waved, and said “Hi Linda”. No matter how famous they are, entertainers are just people that want to be loved and appreciated. In the end I was sorry I went because when Travis sang a song called Anyone. I thanked God is was dark because I was choking up. I remember that song as one of the saddest I have ever heard in my life. Tonight, Will chose one of Travis’ hard-rocking, toe-tapping, country anthems, Modern Day Bonnie & Clyde. It’s a story of boy meets girl at a truck stop. They hit it off and leave together. They stop at a convenience store, she robs the place, and they take off down the road. Ultimately, they got arrested and thrown in jail. In my mind, this was Will’s best performance of the season. It was a perfect song choice delivered with high energy and confident and genuine country swag. Will was on fire. It reminded me of a Casey James lyric via the song, Bulletproof: I can’t stop. I can’t quit. I’m like a stick of dynamite and my fuse is lit (a song from the best album ever recorded by an American Idol alum, Casey James’ wonderful Strip It Down, a blues masterpiece). Bulletproof is a song tailor made for Will’s voice and I hope he will one day add it to his stage set. Speaking of the best Idol contestants, Jacob Lusk’s new retro R&B band, Gabriels, is taking the world by storm. They were nominated for Best International Group at the 2023 Brit Awards and just finished Coachella. Elton John called their first EP, Love and Death In a Different Time one of the most seminal records I’ve heard in the last 10 years, and, The Guardian said of their second EP, Blame, Could this actually be the best album of the year?. I had hoped to see Casey James and Jacob Lusk’s as guest performers on Idol, but it wasn’t meant to be. To add to my discontent, Luke had to go and mention heavy Is the crown which made me yearn to hear Daughtry’s Heavy Is The Crown, from the second best album ever recorded by an American Idol alum, Dearly Beloved (I love that album). I had hoped Chris would come back and sing Break Into My Heart (my favorite track from Dearly Beloved) but that wasn’t meant to be either.
2. Jack Blocker: Jack did a fantastic cover of Ella Henderson’s wonderful adaptation of Cher’s Believe (Season 9 of X Factor UK (2012)). Alexa Wildish topped even that with her emotionally draining country version of this song on The Voice Season 24. However, the best version of Cher’s Believe belongs to Roby Gulton from X Factor Indonesia 2021. His version fuses both the ballad version and the original version with one of the purest, most beautiful, and powerful pipes you will ever hear anywhere in the world. While Jack’s wonderful performance is not as good as these three, it was absolutely one of the best Idol performances of the night (and there were lots of them). I never thought much of Believe before Ella got me thinking. After analyzing the lyric, I realized there is deep meaning in this song: do not wallow in the misery of a broken love affair because some relationships simply can’t be salvaged no matter how much you love the object of your affections, so, accept that it cannot be and open your heart to a new beginnings (said while musing the Semisonic lyric from Closing Time: every new beginning is some other beginning’s end). At this point, I’m not sure if Jack can do any wrong. This song was delivered straight up, vocals center stage, without any of the Jack-isms we’ve come to expect from him, and he still kicked butt.
3. McKenna Faith Brienholt: She told us she wouldn’t change the arrangement; that she would stay true to the original and perhaps she did for a bit but the second half had less to do with the Goo Goo Dolls than McKenna Faith Brienholt. The second half of this performance was beautifully sung and loaded with pure passion. It was classic McKenna. If you’ve heard the song, you know it’s a love song. Many consider it one of the best love songs ever written including Billboard, Rolling Stone, MTV, and the Grammys. It’s a song about an angel in heaven who falls in love with a beautiful earthling girl and is forced to make the difficult choice between love and immortality. He choses love and must leave his heavenly home. Followed by the smash hit, Name, Iris brought the band world wide fame and money but the band’s long time alternative and punk rock credentials were lost because of it. Rock fans abandoned them. The original Goo Goo Dolls' devotion to punk and grunge had been reduced to soft pop rock. But with millions of mainstream commercially friendly pop music fans, the band could only wave good-bye to their alternative rock fans. But as you know, some fans require genre-specific credentials and street cred before they accept you as one of them and once you lose that credibility, it’s hard to get it back because you’re stuck with labels like sell-outs. It’s a shame really. Goo Goo Dolls is a wonderful band. Who cares if they are alternative rock or pop rock? I love all genres of music but my broad love of music is definitely not shared by all.
4. Kaibrienne: Kaibrienne is right. Here Without You is about losing a lover but it also appeals to anybody missing a loved one; e.g., best friend, family member, loved ones serving in the armed forces, etc. Listeners take from this song what they need to fill a void pursuant to a need. Kaibrienne sang beautifully tonight. This was yet another wonderful performance. Incidentally, I do not agree with those who continue to classify 3 Doors Down as Grunge. Both 3 Doors Down and Three Days Grace are Post-Grunge, just like Foo Fighters, Nickleback, Creed, Matchboc Twenty, Shinedown, and Fuel. Our own Idol super band, Daughtry, is also 100% Post Grunge. Authentic Grunge bands utilize punk rock and heavy metal rock; e.g. bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and Pearl Jam.
5. Abi Carter: I knew it would happen this way. Abi and Cold Play is a match made in heaven. Both Abi and Cold Play personify and project pure emotion. There’s nothing in it for an Idol contestant as it’s not a competition song but Cold Plays' The Birds is a magnificent work of art. I’ll bet Abi loves it too. Clocks carry an age-old adage; e.g. time waits for no one so make the most of the time we are given. Clocks mark every moment of our existence from life to death. The poet Emily Dickinson summed it up this way: Because I could not stop for death, she kindly stopped for me. Do not dwell on the miseries of life. Find ways to cope until better days come again. With apology to Emily Dickinson and Cold Play, I prefer this alternate: Because I could not stop for Love, she kindly stopped for me. Surely this message, too, lies somewhere in the periphery of meaning. An Odd Decision: Why did Abi abandon the piano on a song famous for its very recognizable haunting piano riffs? But I won’t complain. Turns out, she’s got tons of stage presence and the camera absolutely loves her. The Idol makeup artists are working overtime. Give them more money.
6. Tristan Harper: Jason Aldean's She's Country is classic country rock. According to Jason Aldean, this is not just a song about a woman who loves country music. Rather, it’s an ode to strong, independent women who whole-heartedly embrace the country way of life. I can’t complain about Tristan’s dancing and wiggling tonight since Jason (and Luke Bryan) likes to wiggle too. Plus, he was encouraged to keep wiggling by Katy and Luke. Contestants must pay attention to the judges’ critiques. They can’t simply ignore them. If they do, they run the risk of invoking their ire and having to cope with negative reviews and the punishment that comes with that. Despite the wiggles, this was a very entertaining performance. Good vocal with lots of interaction with his adoring fans.
7. Emmy Russell: Blink182’s most commercially successful record, All The Small Things, was written by Tom DeLonge for his then girlfriend, whom he later married and after 18 years together, divorced her. Blink182 is an unapologetic and irreverent pop punk band specializing in fast guitar riffs and in-your-face lyrics. All The Small Things is a love song wherein Tom describes all the little things his girlfriend does for him. It’s hard for me to find similarities between shy and insecure Emmy and Blink 182, but, the contrast is jarring. Like System of a Down, Slipknot, Mudvayne, Korn, Disturbed, etc, Blink182 is loaded with testosterone. For example, System of a Down’s audience is 75% male and they jump, leap, bang heads, and fly all over the arena. So it’s kind of refreshing to hear a cute, ultra feminine, sugar sweet version of this punk ballad. Emmy will be successful in country music because there aren’t many singers out there like her. She’s a lot like our own Kelly Pickler, who is more outgoing and gregarious than Emmy but her instrument is almost identical to Emmy’s. Specifically, there's not power or muscle in it, only a soft sweet mellifluous tone that goes straight to the heart. Listen to Kelly Pickler's The Woman I Am. You’ll see what I mean.
8. Julie Gagnon: I am a huge Gagnon fan, but this was not her best performance. She is playing the game, I know, trying to mix in some pop songs with her R&B repertoire. After witnessing the dismissal of Nya, Jayna, Roman, and Aji, four very good R&B singers, it was probably a wise move to mix it up some, especially since it seems to have paid off. She’s been safe for two weeks in a row. But this is not the Julia Gagnon I’ve come to love. Here I Am is a song from the soundtrack for the movie, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron and tells the story of a young mustang as he fights for his freedom and his place in the herd. I’m guessing Julia connects spiritually with the meaning of these lyrics. Perhaps this is the reason she chose it. My worry is that switching lanes mid stream is never a good idea on Idol. It takes time to grow a fan base and develop a rapport with your audience so while it might be possible to expand your lane, there won't be enough time to change lanes permanently. R&B is who she is. That’s her home. Despite what happened to the other R&B singers, she needs to find songs in the R&B songbook that also have a wide audience appeal.
9. Mia Matthews: Shania Twain’s No One Needs To Know is a good song about a woman that falls in love with a man but wants to keep it secret from the world. She forgot a lyric. Just as I predicted several weeks ago, forgetting a lyric in a tightly bunched race like Idol, will get you sent home in the later rounds where one or two votes can decide who stays and who goes home. I agree with Katy though. Luke didn’t have to call her on it. He could have said something like And I loved that wonderful pause you added. It’s an appropriate comment because it has two meanings; e.g., it's a classic double entendre (just like I’ve never heard your sing better which also has a dual meaning).
10. Kayko. Wheatus' Teenage Dirtbag is a song about a boy with a crush on the most popular girl in school. I have heard a rock version of this song. The trouble here is that Kayko is out-gunned in this competition and has been for some time. But I think he made a mistake tonight. He certainly can’t imitate Wheatus but he might have fared better with One Direction’s (1D) version of the popular song. 1D is no more but Harry Styles is still going strong and Niall and Louis are famous judging panelists so they still have visibility and maintain a loyal fanbase that remembers them fondly. The funny thing is 1D fans didn’t know who Iron Maiden was. And I wouldn’t be surprised if Idol’s younger viewers are unfamiliar with Iron Maiden (Iron Maiden is mentioned in the lyrics several times). It's hard to advance with a song that even your fans are unfamiliar with. There was something cute about the Wheatus version of this song. He plays the part of a shy, empathetic young man in love with a girl clearly out of his depth. So you want to pull for him and hope he gets the girl. But what Kayko did neutralized all the cuteness and sympathy in the original version and replaced with something that was unlikable, unrelatable, and insincere. But Kayko went out on his own terms. He did things his way and was supported in his endeavor by the judges and by his fans. That's really all you can ask for..

A couple of opinions:
Did not know that Scotty has done so well in country music that he was invited to join the GOO--a big honor.
Just Sam was reported going back to singing in the subway as she went nowhere after winning. Hope this is a new start for her as she is a tremendous singer.
Did not like the styling of the women last night. Hair was almost completely the stiff strands hanging in their faces...except for Julia whose hair was just too severe. The only one with pretty hair was Emmy ( and also Will who looked like his was blown out).
Dresses were ugly-- overall. Emmy's leather skirt was way too short and Julie's outfit too severe---not a great look with her severe hair.

I agree about the clothing/hair - not the best looks. Makeup was on point, though! I'm glad Just Sam got her moment on stage that she couldn't have back in 2020. Not surprised about Kayko going home, he was all over the place. Literally. Now he can go back to doing originals, since covers don't seem to be his thing.

Tonight's show was good!
Interesting choices the judges made for them to choose from. I was surprised by some of their final decisions (Jack), but I enjoyed the songs and performances.
No men in the bottom 3, which was expected. Katy was the winner of the judges picks, so she got to choose who stayed and who went home. I was very surprised she didn't save KB! I thought KB did a beautiful job tonight.
The tribute to Mandisa was ...nice... but a little disappointing, I guess. I wished they had done more.

Last night sounded better all around - the band wasn't overpowering and (most of) the performances were really good. When Jack chose the Willie Nelson song I cringed, but...I kind of liked it! And Abi was my favorite of the night with the Evanescence song. She sounded just like Amy Lee, especially in the beginning part.
The styling folks must be confused as to what to do with Julia. That outfit last night wasn't it, she looked like she was going to sing at the Texas state fair.

April 29, 2024: American Idol The Top 8
1. Jack Blocker: For me, Always On My Mind wasn’t only the best performance of the night. It was the best performance of the season. But I thought Nya’s Georgia On My Mind was the best performance of the season and that song made no impact on voters. She still ended up in the bottom group. Let’s hope I don’t jinx Jack too. I knew this dude was a transcendent talent. He loves pop punk but can easily disappear inside a ballad and project it with passion and purpose. Surprisingly, when he stopped making faces, he showcased a voice that was both powerful and ranging. The deeper he goes into this competition, the better he sings. He’s a joker at heart but this was a truly magnificent performance, one of the best I’ve ever seen on the Idol stage. Below you will find the lyrics to two of the greatest apology songs ever written: Bruno Mars’ When I Was Your Man, and, Willie Nelson’s Always On My Mind. Both are apologizing to their significant other for the same mistake: spending too little time with the women they love.
When I Was Your Man by Bruno Mars: Too young, too dumb to realize…That I should've bought you flowers…And held your hand…Shoulda gave you all my hours…When I had the chance…Take you to every party…'Cause all you wanted to do was dance…Now my baby's dancin…But she's dancin' with another man. [Bridge] Although it hurts, I'll be the first to say that I was wrong. Oh, I know I'm probably much too late to try and apologize for my mistakes but I just want you to know…[Chorus]…I hope he buys you flowers…I hope he holds your hand./..Give you all his hours…When he has the chance…Take you to every party…'Cause I remember how much you love to dance…Do all the things I should've done…When I was your man…Do all the things I should've done…when I was your man.
You Were Always On My Mind Maybe I didn't treat you…Quite as good as I should have…Maybe I didn't love you…Quite as often as I could have…Little things I should have said and done...I just never took the time…[Chorus] You were always on my mind…You were always on my mind…You were always on my mind…Maybe I didn't hold you…All those lonely, lonely times…And I guess I never told you…I'm so happy that you're mine…If I made you feel second best…Girl, I'm so sorry I was blind…[Chorus] You were …Always on my mind…You were always on my mind…Maybe I didn't treat you…Quite as good as I should have…Maybe I didn't love you…Quite as often as I could have…Little things I should have said and done…I just never took the time…You were always on my mind…You were always on my mind…[Bridge] Tell me…Tell me that your sweet love hasn't died…Give me…Give me one more chance to keep you satisfied, satisfied…Little things I should have said and done…I just never took the time…[Chorus] You were always on my mind…You were always on my mind.
One man’s apology was accepted. One man’s apology fell on deaf ears. No matter who you love, cherish them with all your heart and never take them for granted. They need love too and you can't find the time to share your love with them, they will definitely look elsewhere for it..
Willie Nelson is the Romeo of apologies: Gotta love the guy. He’s got a way with words…“You always hurt the one you love. The one you shouldn’t hurt at all. You always take the sweetest rose and crush it till the petals fall. You always break the kindest heart with hasty words you can’t recall. So if I broke your heart last night, it’s because I love you most of all.”…You Always Hurt The One You Love.
2. Abi Carter: Evanescence’s Bring Me To Life is a love song about her future husband, Josh Hartzler, whose intense gaze seemed to pierce her very soul. In a depression at the time, she very much wanted someone or something to bring her back to life. This was clearly Abi's finest hour on the Idol stage. She keeps picking songs with popular piano chords but doesn’t play the piano at all any more. It’s just odd but no one really cares. As I stated last night, she’s got a hypnotizing stage presence which was augmented wonderfully by the Idol stagehands, cameramen, lighting techs, and set designers who must have worked diligently to create the dark satanic atmosphere for Abi’s redemption and transformation. Shrouded head to toe in solid black silk and lace, with hands and arms reaching for the sky (as if begging for relief) seeking resurrection and rebirth. The aesthetics for this performance were perfect. But it wasn’t just aesthetics. Abi embraced her character and played the part well. Her vocal was strong, soaring, and spot on. I kept thinking the performance could have used a bit of reverb (seems right for a song about rebirth) but reckoned the audio engineers were not allowed to do that since it could be deemed as unfairly assisting or influencing a contestant’s performance. Still, there’s no doubt in my mind that this too will go down as one of the finest performances ever seen on the Idol stage.
3. Will Moseley: The Big Guy rocked the house with a driving hard rock version of Johnny Cash’s Folsom Prison Blues. It seems odd to me that anyone would want to rock to these miserable lyrics (a man so done with life that he would kill his fellow man just to watch him die?) but I learned my lesson with Kayko. I had completely forgotten that I must always respect the artistic temperaments of others who interpret lyrics differently than I do and receive different information from lyrics than I do. In addition, I remembered my youth and realized I used to rock out to songs about death: Green Days’ Wake Me Up When September Ends, Metallica’s Fade To Black, Pearl Jam’s Last Kiss, Radiohead’s Videotape, and System Of A Down screaming obscenities at a dead friend who committed suicide in their angry anthem, Soil. Not to mention Eminem’s imagined homicide of his ex-wife’s new boyfriend and son in Kim. His miserable portrait of murder-suicide victim, Stan, is not much better. Rage Against The Machine’s Killing In The Name Of and Tupac celebrated the death of racists cops. Tupac recorded some wonderful rap songs (Ghetto Gospel, Sadie, etc) but was obsessed with death and dying because he knew the life of a gangsta was short and violent (If I Die 2 NIte, Letter To My Unborn, Thugz Mansion, and So Many Tears). I used to love all these guys so I’m in no position to lecture Will about rocking out to Folsom Prison Blues. Structurally, it’s a good song with cogent lyrics but not fun or uplifting at all. I’m surprised that Lionel picked this Johnny Cash song with so many wonderful uplifting and romantic songs in the Johnny Cash songbook. But I'm sure he had his reasons.
4. Emmy Russell: Loretta Lynn’s Coal Miners Daughter is, as we all know, a song about growing up in poverty and, much like Tristan Harper, somehow finding the personal fortitude to persevere, to work hard to feed, cloth, and sleep comfortably, and do all that with a sense of pride and self-empowerment. I am programmed to criticize contestants who don’t challenge themselves musically but it never even crossed my mind with Emmy. She will always be sweet adorable Emmy and I doubt that will change any time soon. She’s not a belter, doesn’t even try to negotiate glory notes, she’s never going to shred guitar or dance around the stage. And I’m not bothered by any of it. She’s perfect to me as is. I am reminded of the Little Prince: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly. What is essential is invisible to the naked eye. Meaning we should look beyond the surface (the visual, the auditory, the tactile touch) and focus our attention on the essentials, the things that actually matter. Only the human heart (our connections to each other) can do that. And Emmy is all heart.
5. Julia Gagnon: When she chose Somewhere Over The Rainbow, I came alive with expectation thinking we were going to get Patti Labelle's wonderful version of this song. Turns out we didn’t get a Patti Labelle, Judy Garland, or the Eva Cassidy version. This one was all Julia. It was beautifully sung with a lyrical flow I’ve never seen from her. She has a plan of attack now. That’s a good thing. And it seems to be working. She’s been safe three weeks in a row. I don’t like the new plan. It’s just that I prefer the old Julia. But its votes that matter and she needs them so I can only wish the very best for her. Contestants absolutely should do whatever they can to advance because they cannot win if they don’t advance. I hope her new plan of attack works out for her.
6. Tristan Harper: Morgan Wallen’s Sand In My Boots is loaded with symbolism but the one that stands out is the sand in his boots, which symbolizes a lost love. Obviously, he can’t continue wearing the boots without removing the sand but he’s hesitant to do that because he doesn’t want to acknowledge that the love he feels for his beloved is likely over; and proved to be little more than a fling. I have no complaints about what Tristan did. He sang well. But there were some wonderful performances tonight and I don’t think what was done here was as good as some others so I am proceeding with caution. On my 11 point criteria scale, Will is back on top, followed by Jack and then Tristan.
7. McKenna Faith Brienholt: I don’t know much about Lissie (don’t remember seeing her on the charts) and I haven’t heard her song, Everywhere I Go. I was surprised McKenna chose it. Idol viewers (and voters) are generally comfortable with songs they’ve heard and/or artists they know. I do agree with Katy and McKenna though, it is a beautiful song and Lissie is a wonderful singer with a beautiful voice. It’s just that I’ve watched this play out for years on the Idol stage. Familiarity matters. Have said that, I don’t know what the judges had in mind when picking these songs. Sometimes they want to experiment with a contestant’s range; perhaps they want to test their ability to adapt to different genres, or even to see how they respond under pressure and time constraints. In some situations, the judges will intentionally pick songs that contestants are likely unfamiliar with. I found this review of Everywhere I Go on oldtimesmusic.com and posted it below: “The song reflects the artist’s personal experiences of longing to escape the mundane and discover new horizons. Lissie’s powerful vocals and poetic lyrics capture the essence of her craving for adventure and exploration. It serves as a reminder to embrace the unknown and seize every opportunity that comes our way.” Anyway, I thought McKenna did a good job with it. She’s a good singer. So is Kaibrienne. I was disappointed but not really surprised they ended up bottom three. I had thought Tristan and Julia were most vulnerable but once they were announced safe, it was clear that either Kaibrienne or McKenna would be leaving. Clearly, Will, Jack, Abi and Emmy delivered the best performances of the night.
8. Kaibrienne. Olivia Rodrigo is a wonderful, Grammy-winning artist who is famous in her own rite but I’m not sure how many adult Idol viewers over the age of thirty listened to Drivers License and/or Sour. I say that because it could be the reason Kaibrienne ended up where she did. If given a choice, I think it’s better to pick a song that is well known to a wide range of Idol viewers, old and young, or, at least pick something that was recorded by an artist who is a household name. I thought Kaibrienne did a good job with this song too so it likely boiled down to numbers. Traitor is widely believed to be Olivia’s cathartic response to be dumped and/or cheated on by then boyfriend, Joshua Bassett, who left her for Sabrina Carpenter. Teenagers! Glad to be done with all that. Most adults accept that some lovers cheat, that some lovers simply fall out of love for reasons they don’t even understand, and that some relationships were simply not meant to be or need time to gel. It takes time for teenagers to learn about life.

I love your reviews, liedenfrost. Jack’s “Always on my Mind” was so good. I giggled a little at all his arm movements. I had to wonder if it was the first time he’s worn a fringed jacket and was just enjoying it a lot. 🤣
