I watched the Holiday Baking Championship in a marathon Thursday. What I noticed, watching the episodes one after another, is that they seemed to have much more "put in odd ingredients" rather than make a nice whatever. Granted the host always comes out with some oddity, but these all seemed to have that plus more. I really didn't care for this season's shows as much as previous years because of that.

The odd ingredients are to much to me. Maybe is is trying to make something that is tasty with the combinations they have to use. I like good plain ole food made to taste good. Jazz up a pie or potatoes or meat that has a different but good taste.

The poor young woman who got the green apple flavoring-----that was impossible to make taste good in anything. And the judges saying "I don't taste what ever". My reply would be "You weren't supposed to because I put a tiny bit in to prevent it from ruining my product."
Just let them bake their best and stop this silliness.

Yup; your ingredient can make or break you. I still remember the Italian guy with the mustache from the Spring Baking Championship. It was the show before the final, they sprung one of those surprise ingredients in as a twist and he got grapefruit, I think. Grapefruit doesn't go well with anything sweet and baked, and he went home. He was one of the better bakers too.

I love all these shows! And soon to start is Holiday Gingerbread, and some show with Blizzard in the title. I love the Big Bake when its this time of the year too!

Holiday Baking Championship: So much Sara. And I'm also sad about Cedric, he was a good egg. Watched Santa's Baking Blizzard and it was so much fun! While everyone was creative the Asian couple really stood out; the penguin mountain they made in the first heat and their depiction of Central Park was marvelous.

I thought Santa's Baking Blizzard was fun as well. Wow, the NYC lady had one breakdown/recovery after another. I didn't understand why the Asian team didn't win the preheat because those penguins were so cute. Happy they won the main heat and are moving on. The format for this show is a lot like Halloween Gingerbread Challenge where they sample taste the first offering (though with Gingerbread Challenge they had to create a separate tasting for an advantage), but not the second. Well this is CAKE! They are also recreating Halloween Wars into Holiday Wars and Jason will be a judge along with Shinmin Lee. This show debuts this Sunday, 12/1. There is also a Holiday Gingerbread show premiering the same night.

The penguin mountain was adorable but the cake was dry and not that tasty. Also, matcha is an acquired taste that people either like or don't and their cake was matcha flavored. I'm glad they are going forward as well because they were my favorite team.

I can barely keep up with all these shows. Santa's Baking Blizzard was neat, and the one lady made the most adorable figures I've ever seen on one of these shows. Those little penguins and the mini judge figures she made in the second round? Perfect. I'm glad they advanced too.

Despite being pissed off at the obvious ringer winning last year I decided to give Holiday Gingerbread another go last night. That blond woman was by far the most unpleasant person I've seen on any of these shows. The way she treated her partner was terrible, and I was glad she didn't win. However, I loved the Mexican Doggie Christmas and the other display of the cat doing crazy things to the dogs and the house.

On my breakfast watch list Did watch Holiday Wars in real time and boy was Jason almost subdued (except for his jacket). Sort of miss the pumpkin carvers.

I watched holiday wars too, but was a little underwhelmed and repulsed by the choices the teams made for the characters in the first round - A pig, a flamingo, and the ugliest cat I have ever seen.

I wouldn't have blamed the helper if she had walked out on her. What a witch. I would have been happy if either of the other two won, though I did like the doggie/pinata scene best. Nice to see Adam again, too.

I'm actually going to defend her. Her "assistant" has been a lead dog on cake wars and is not one to take a backseat in a competition. I thought, given the ego of the assistant, she did well not to smack her one. Not to say she wasn't also a huge ego, but that match-up of strangers was a horrible miss-match. It's too bad she relied on the network to supply the assistant.

There are ways to handle egos without becoming a giant douchebag yourself and she crossed that line many times last night. Sadly, I can see that horrible woman treating anyone who was her assistant that way, ego or no ego.

Watching the first heat on this week's Holiday Baking Championship and screaming at the TV!!! It's pronounced PANETONE with the e on the end sounding like eh. Every time someone miss-pronounces this Italian desert name I cringe, then scream...especially since Jesse has pronounced it correctly from the beginning. ARGHH

Ha, I said the same thing last night. I did hear a couple people besides Jesse say it correctly, but a lot of them didn't. I'm a weirdo who loves fruitcake, so I naturally like Panettone...they did come up with some creative things to do with it. I just wish they'd stop throwing twists on them at the last minute, sometimes the twist can really screw up an otherwise nice dessert (like the poor girl who had to use two fillings in her cupcakes ).

I love fruitcake too! And I love Panettone with butter for breakfast. I agree about the twists, have them at the beginning not half way through when the bakes are half done. I get it you want to see how they react and their skills but often it doesn't do the bake justice.

I've never had Panettone but it looks like a lighter, more delicious fruitcake.
Sweet Janet got the knife last night and her exit was both gracious and classy. No wonder everyone liked her.
Also loved this week's Christmas Cookie Challenge where they had to make cookie holiday cards. Two contestants were using the phrase "Let's get lit" and when Eddie mentioned it the other lady who was using it first simply said "It's okay...we're friends!" which I thought was really sweet. I felt really bad for the lady where everything went wrong with her cookies (from setting them up to bake to the icing) because sometimes you can't control that. I didn't feel so sorry for the guy who did the super simple ones because there's simple, and then there's lazy and his was the latter.

Maybe they finally put him on to get rid of him? They were rather simple. I could have done better.

Holiday Gingerbread: Much better than last week; all the teams worked together nicely. The theme was to create a Worst Christmas and one had a coffeehouse in the North Pole out of coffee so Santa and the elves went on strike, lol. It was so full of detail. The other one I remember was a package with tentacles coming out of it creating havoc; apparently Santa dropped off Cthulu instead of the puppy Timmy wanted? I forgot who won but all the submissions this week were good.

Cthulu won much to the consternation of the other two. His baker has been working gingerbread a very short time but the judges loved his humor and that it truly was three-dimensional.
The coffee shop was detailed but she did not place enough lights so it was difficult to see all the work she did inside...also that a lot of the work WAS inside. They liked the factory takeover by Gingerella, but she was not decorated on the back and looked sloppy.
You are right in that all were good, but the baker who made the octopus "present" also won the tasting treat. The least experienced, but really creative.

Holiday Baking Championship: I finally figured out why I'm so annoyed about Sara. She is very "Hey, I'm a Food Network personality! Pick me!" in a very over-the-top way. She's at 30 and I need her at 10; it's too much.
I really liked the igloos last night except for Melissa's. I really like her but she's really had time management issues the past couple of weeks and her igloo looked slapped together. If she doesn't step it up she's gone. Dwight's half macaroons were cute; I'm going to miss him. Jeffrey's cake pops were a mess but also charming in a way. Jennifer is getting better every week and she and Melissa is my choice for taking it all.
Christmas Cookie Challenge: Making Christmas masks was a good idea. Every week we see someone who does wonderful work otherwise bomb due to time constraints and this show was no exception; while I liked the Nutcracker idea the execution needed work. I really liked the "fire" bombs and was glad he won.

I loved that one judge's expression when she bit into the fire bomb. I expected her to go all dragon. I know heavy spice like Jalapeno or Habanero paired with chocolate is very in right now, but stay far away from me.

I LOVE Jalepeno paired with chocolate! And it particularly goes well with Dark Chocolate; the hotness melds very well with the heavy chocolate and gives it a lift.

They have some seriously talented people on Santa's Baking Blizzard - the finale next week should be fun. I hated to see another team's cake just fall apart like that, the one girl just stood and watched pieces fall off with that look on her face. Poor thing.

I felt so bad for her. Up to that point the tree was beautiful, and then it just...fell apart.
I'm really looking forward to the finale.

I've been watching Holiday Wars on Sunday night. My guy, Jason, has made it to the finals. I say "my guy" because his shop is just over a mile from my house and his stuff is so good that I only allow myself to go in there a maximum of once every 2 weeks. Not only does he make the best cakes and cupcakes I have ever eaten but he's super nice, as is all his staff. He's the leader of the Bah Hum Bakers team (green aprons) and the one they show in the previews dropping a cake. I guess that happens next week.

I am enjoying these Christmas themed baking shows so much! But they are all winding down now with 'Christmas so close. The gingerbread one is amazing to see with all the intricate details, the Big Bake is crazy and fun, the cookie one where we see the winner n each episode instead of at the end of a weeks long competition is so good! I love the baking one, the Blizzard and the Holiday Wars too!
