Has anyone chosen their Kindle First book for July? I keep looking and I can't decide. None of them really seem like my cup of tea, but maybe one of you has already chosen and/or read one of them and has an opinion.

I picked the crime thriller A Killer's Mind, but haven't read it yet. If you have Prime, you can get all six for free today!

Thanks for the heads up! I even had the Kindle First page open and didn't even notice that deal. For one month, at least, I can pick a bunch of the ones I can't decide between!

I had a hard time too! I settled on The Snow Gypsy and The Killer Collective after reading descriptions and reviews. Funny how, in some months, it's hard to even find one you want to read and then, in other months, you want to read ALL of them!

I haven't chosen yet. I'm waiting for some more reviews also, several of them look pretty good. I'm always amazed at people who can pick one, read it that fast, then post a review the same damn day it came out. Wow.

I've lived in this city for nearly twenty years and am embarrassed to say that I'd never gotten a library card. For part of that time, I was in school, so I'd just check out books from the university instead, but that's been over a decade. I don't do well checking out books because I never end up finishing the book in time OR I just forget to return it, so I pay fines. Anyway, my book club used a meeting room at one of the library branches and, since I was early, I thought I'd just go ahead and get a library card. I've already checked out two Kindle books. I don't know why I didn't do this sooner! They do only have X number of copies of each book, so there's still a waiting list, but there's plenty available. I read and returned a Michael Connelly book (one of the Renee Ballard series) and just got China Rich Girlfriend, the sequel to Crazy Rich Asians. The great thing is that, once the 21 day check out period is over, they will just remove the book from your Kindle - NO late fees! I'm a fast reader, so 21 days is more than enough time. I can also get free access to the NY Times online, which is a HUGE perk (you normally have to pay). So yeah, YAY for libraries!

The Mayor and two Council people were recently at our building to give high praise to our remodeled library. If I could walk, I could get there easily. Hmmm...I've had a card forever though I don't know where it is. Think I'll go online and have a looksee.

You should definitely look into getting a library card if you don't have one! If your library is like the one here, you can probably do all of it online. I was really impressed with how much online content is available. The nearest library branch (there are 18 branches) to my house is pretty small, but I don't really plan on checking out physical books. It's great to be able to check out ebooks and read the NY Times.

I did do some research online and found the website focused on activities rather than reader (other than juvenile) services. There was a link to an ebook lender called Hoop or Hooper or something like that. Oh, you can get a card online and, if I go there, I'll look closer at that.
Right now, I have so many freebie books in my kindle that I don't have a need for new ones. However, I do have some favorite authors in my Amazon Save list waiting for price reductions, so... I'll see.

I've always been a big supporter of the public library everywhere I've lived. And once they started offering e-books it was even better. There can be pretty long waitlists but I never find myself with nothing to read. And the library itself is convenient for me too so I also check out hard copies of older books that I've never gotten around to, or even the newer books are available more often because most people prefer the e-books.
The staff at my library also does a great job and curates many "lists" that help steer you towards other titles/authors that you might not have heard of, sort of an "if you liked ABC, then you might like XYZ"

Amazon is giving TWO Amazon First Reads for July because of Prime Day! I love it when they do that. Most months I have such a hard time choosing just one book. It's going to be hard enough picking two!

Right now, I have so many freebie books in my kindle that I don't have a need for new ones. However, I do have some favorite authors in my Amazon Save list waiting for price reductions, so... I'll see. My mom and I were talking about it the other day, so I checked the site for the OC Public Library and they use the same ebook lending platform as my city's library. It's called OverDrive. It's super easy to borrow books and to find them. I always save books in my Amazon shopping cart (never have gotten into using Wish Lists there) and I started looking on the library's site for those books. I just borrowed one and there's another I just found that I'm going to read next.
The OC Library also uses Hoopla too, but I'm not familiar with that platform. I'm sure it's similar to OverDrive
I have more books on my Kindle than I'll probably ever read, but I like having options! With the library books, I'm really working on not borrowing more than one or maybe two. It's not that I'll get fined, but it would be a bummer to only get halfway through a book and have it removed because the lending period was over....or to have to speed read a book before my time was up! I just borrowed one book that I had in my Amazon cart and was curious about. It looks like a challenging read, so I likely wouldn't get it finished in two weeks, but at least I can see if it's worth buying.
There are a few more days left in July and I still haven't chosen my second Amazon First Read. Anyone made their choices yet? I only got The Boy Between Worlds and can't decide on another one. None of them are really grabbing me.

Bookbub directed me to a site where you can pick up low cost audio books just like you can pick up ebooks at Bookbub. The name of the website is CHIRP. I picked up a sci-fi fantasy piece for $3.99 rather than the $9 - $11 you would pay for an Audible book. Of course, like Bookbub, if you are looking for cheap, like I am, the story quality might not be there. I'm just happy to have yet another alternative.

Go through the library!!! You can get great books for free on your Kindle! No sacrificing of quality for price. Life's too short to read bad books! Since you can apparently get an account at the OC Public Library if you live in California, I'm going to get one there too, so I have two options to find titles. In case anyone else has had this problem, I thought I'd post the solution here. Recently, my Kindle started showing a time remaining that was clearly wrong. For instance, with a 400 page book that I was 50% through, it showed I would finish in an hour and 15 minutes....for twenty pages without a change. I found the fix online. You go into the search field and type ;ReadingTimeReset It will return no search results, but when you return to the title you were reading, it will show that it is recalculating the reading speed and then you'll get an accurate number. It's not that big of a deal in the scheme of things, but sometimes I'll read a little longer if I know I can finish it right then. When I did this in the case I mentioned above, it recalculated to around 3 hours and 20 minutes left to read, which seemed like more like my reading speed and not, well Evelyn freaking Wood!

It’s that time of the month again! (No, not that one )Has anyone chosen their Amazon First titles for September? I’m leaning towards the one about Stieg Larsson and The Vine Witch, based on reviews. The Dressmakers Gift sounds like the same kind of “Holocaust Light” as Sarah’s Key, which I hated (I referred to it as “Maeve Binchy goes to the Holocaust”). Every Thing You Are looks good too and the fact that the one-star reviews complained about profanity kind of makes me want to read it more! Anyone make a decision yet?

I picked The Dressmakers Gift, Critical . Haven't started to read it yet. Have you picked a second title yet? They're giving two books to Prime members this month.
I think I've settled on the one about Steig Larsson, The Man Who Played With Fire, and Everything You Are. I'm just more likely to read contemporary fiction than fantasy (ie. The Vine Witch).

I hadn't realized that, Critical and I deleted the monthly e-mail I get telling me which are available. I went straight to Amazon.com/prime reading but it's so confusing that way b/c there are just so many titles to choose from. I wound up choosing A Trick of Light: Stan Lee's Alliances b/c my son is a huge Marvel fan. The only problem is that I can only download it to either my Android phone, the Kindle for my PC (which is what I usually do) or the Kindle Cloud Reader. I was looking to see if there was some way to change the option of sending it to my android phone to sending it to my son's I-phone. I know he'd love to read it and he wouldn't want to sit here at my desktop computer to have to read it.

Here you go: That Stan Lee book isn't on the list though. Wonder what list that was on. Are there free books I'm missing!? I have mine set to go to, I think, my Paperwhite. My dad's Kindle is on my account as well and he has his settings to see ALL titles (vs. just the ones on his device), so if I get something he'd like to read, I don't have to worry about sending it to him. I long ago gave up explaining to him the difference between those two things and that NO, all of those books are not his, they're mine! I still don't think he understands the difference between the books on the account and the suggestions from Amazon. More than once I've gotten an email thanking me for my purchase when he's gone and spent WAY too much (one time it was $14.99 ) for a title he saw in the suggestions on his Kindle. That's always a (not) lovely surprise! waywyrd - we're such rebels! As soon as you tell me I shouldn't see that movie or read that book, that's the first thing I want to do! I saw those reviews and said, "Too much profanity? Sign me up!"

Yep, don't tell me not to read or watch something, I'll hop right on it. That Stan Lee book is on the Prime free reading list. You can "borrow" up to ten books from the list (it changes occasionally) but I've already got ten checked out. I'm so behind on my reading.

So, kind of like an Amazon library? Since I started borrowing from my city's library, I've tried to not have more than two - and mostly just one - book checked out at a time. It's not like they fine you or anything, but I just won't get them all read - the last time I had two at the same time, I barely looked at one of them before it expired. IIRC, you can have over 30 titles checked out at once, which seems like madness to me. Maybe that's for families with multiple readers

Okay, I feel pretty silly now b/c I never realized that when Amazon First Reads sends me an email at the beginning of each month, that the list of books in the e-mail is only a few of many. Never bothered to read the entire e-mail which says this : " Below is a selection of titles new in Prime Reading. For more, browse the full Prime Reading collection." I've been only picking from the titles listed. I went to Amazon's site and just kept clicking the right arrow and that Stan Lee book popped up as a freebie. I guess that will count as my 2nd free read for September. But that wasn't what I was talking about. I get a free book from Amazon First Reads and then another free book choice from the Amazon Kindle. It is 2 separate emails and has different selections. The Kindle email is the one I deleted and I can't figure out how to access that from the Amazon site. I'm as confused as your dad, I am afraid. I'm only 62 but I'm not as tech savvy as you young'uns.

At nearly 51, I'm not feeling so much like a young'un any more! My dad, who is 84, was also LITERALLY a rocket scientist. I refrain from reminding him of this when he has trouble with the remote control He also has not-so-great vision, so I try to cut him a little slack and not get too upset when he's buying up books on my credit card! I'll admit I generally just delete all the Amazon emails. It's a rare month when I've already chosen my First title before the reminder email (ie. "the month is almost over...."). Often times, I'm waiting to see reviews from other readers. Usually, the negative reviews make the decision for me, either way.
