I do believe that after all this time, this is the 1st time we have had a father & son performing together. Carey Bell was a blues musician who played harmonica in the Chicago blues style, he was born in Macon Mississippi. He played harmonica and bass guitar for other blues musicians from the late 1950s to the early 1970s before embarking on a solo career. Besides his own albums, he recorded as an accompanist or duo artist with Earl Hooker, Robert Nighthawk, Lowell Fulson, Eddie Taylor, Louisiana Red and Jimmy Dawkins and was a frequent partner with his son, the guitarist Lurrie Bell. Blues Revue called Bell "one of Chicago's finest harpists." The Chicago Tribune said Bell was "a terrific talent in the tradition of Sonny Boy Williamson and Little Walter." Carey died of heart failure on May 6, 2007, in Chicago, 70 Lurrie Bell is a blues guitarist and singer. He is the son of Carey Bell. He was born in Chicago. In the mid 1970s, he joined Koko Taylor's Blues Machine and toured with the band for four years. He made his recording debut in 1977. In 2014, he won a Blues Music Award for his track "Blues in my Soul", in the 'Song of the Year' category. In 2015, he won a Blues Music Award in the 'Traditional Blues Male Artist' category. This song is from an album they did together called Son Of A Gun. It came out in 1984. I’ve Got To Leave Chicago by Carey & Lurrie Bell www.youtube.com/watch?v=zP0WAoDFwOI

Earlier today we had the 1st father & son, now we get what I believe to be the 1st group that has yet to release a full album. All of the info below comes from their own website. In the time since 2015, flipturn has mushroomed to reaches far beyond the walls of the Fernandina Beach garage they first practiced in. Built up by Dillon Basse (lead vocals/rhythm guitar), Tristan Duncan (lead guitar), Madeline Jarman (bass), Mitch Fountain (synth), and Devon VonBalson (drums), the band is walking proof that the DIY approach is still alive and well in the modern music world. Growing up and maturing as musicians in a way that can only be done by spending years on the road together, flipturn is primed to usher in the era of their debut full-length album. A flipturn live show is a complete and total release of inhibitions, from the band to the crowd alike. The fever dream energy of their live shows has positioned flipturn as a metaphorical musical sun, holding fans in a trancelike orbit. Basse has a quality to his voice that absolutely ensnares the listener and pulls them deeply into the moment around them. The overall magnetism of the band has allowed them to bring the intimate qualities of their small town roots to a global audience. Back in 2017, flipturn released their debut EP Heavy Colors, which introduced the world to enduring favorites like “Chicago” and “Vanilla.” The following year saw the release of the Citrona EP and some of the band’s most beloved music to date. Most recently, Something You Needed was released right before the world shut down. During the pandemic, the band released a variety of live performances of fan favorites to keep the feeling of live shows fresh, even from home. With over 40 million streams on Spotify alone, countless sold out shows across the US, and tours with Mt. Joy, Rainbow Kitten Surprise and Wilderado, the band has a lead foot on the gas pedal. This year, flipturn will be joining the prestigious lineups of Bonnaroo, Shaky Knees, SXSW, Hangout, Sunfest, and Treefort to name a handful. Fans can also look forward to the upcoming release of their debut album in 2022. This is from their debut EP Heavy Colors from 2017. They are on tour now & will be in Savannah Georgia next Thursday. The tour extends well into December & they will be at Lollapalooza in Chicago July 29. Chicago by flipturn www.youtube.com/watch?v=F60xIONnoP4

Houston Person is a jazz tenor saxophonist and record producer. He grew up in & still lives in Florence, South Carolina, he is now 88. Although he has performed in the hard bop and swing genres, he is most experienced in and best known for his work in soul jazz. He received the ‘Eubie Blake Jazz Award’ in 1982. He studied at South Carolina State College where he was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 1999. He has recorded more than 75 albums as a bandleader. That total doesn’t include his albums with other artists like the 16 he recorded with vocalist Etta Jones. He has been quite the prolific recording artist, I’d say. This song comes from an album called Moment to Moment it came out in 2010. Back In New Orleans by Houston Person www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtCb5PYv_WA

Sometimes the hunt for info on these folks leads to a brick wall, that is the case with this guy. Even his own facebook page omits any biographical information. I did find out that he is on tour & that his latest album contains a vocal from Mick Fleetwoods’ daughter. Here is the most info I could find. Erik Koskinen is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, whose music is not categorized by sub-genres. Stylistically he is on his own. Influenced by roots music of the Americas and the world, the rhythmic integrity and musical tone is as important as the lyrical content and the artistic intent. The song comes from his album Keep it To Yourself it came out in 2010. I think it is good stuff, maybe you will too? Detroit, Detroit by Erik Koskinen www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgmbj9pO6Io

The lack of info on the guy this morning, is not matched by a lack of info on the guy this afternoon. Alvin Lee was an English singer, songwriter, and guitarist born in Nottingham. His real name was Graham Anthony Barnes. He is best known as the lead vocalist and lead guitarist of the blues rock band Ten Years After. Alvin died on 6 March 2013 in Spain. He died from "unforeseen complications following a routine surgical procedure" to correct an atrial arrhythmia. He was 68. He burst into rock prominence with his performance at Woodstock. It was all captured on film in the documentary of the event, and his 'lightning-fast' playing helped catapult him to stardom. The film brought his music to a worldwide audience, although he later lamented that he missed the lost freedom and spiritual dedication of earlier audiences. As a member of Ten Years After he released 10 albums. As a solo artist he released 10 more. There were also albums from a group he formed called Alvin Lee & Company. This was the title song from his 7th solo album. It was released in 1986. The album got to #124 & the song was released as a single & charted at # 26 on the US Rock Charts. He had some help on this album from some pretty big names. His Ten Years After bandmate Leo Lyons plays bass on some cuts, while Boz Burrell from Bad Company plays on others. Jon Lord of Deep Purple plays the Hammond organ & George Harrison adds slide guitar. Detroit Diesel by Alvin Lee www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfJD-SBuVIU

This is yet another group that has very little biographical info available, but they have been around long enough to have released multiple albums & the members have worked on multiple soundtracks together. The group Dez Manku is the creation of Mike Boldt and Phil Gallo. Their first musical endeavor goes back to 1998 when they both worked on the music score for the film West New York, directed by Phil Gallo. That feature starred Frank Vincent and Vincent Pastore, veteran actors from Martin Scorcese’s Goodfellas and The Sopranos. Boldt and Gallo connected musically again in 2005 for the score of Mattie Fresno and the Holoflux Universe. Throughout both projects they kept discussing writing and performing together in a non-film genre. This song comes from an album called A Real World Of Make Believe. The Andrews Sisters were a close harmony singing group of the swing and boogie-woogie eras. The group consisted of three sisters: LaVerne, Maxene, and Patty. They were among the inaugural inductees to the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1998. Writing for Bloomberg, Mark Schoifet said the sisters became the most popular female vocal group of the first half of the 20th century. They are still widely acclaimed today for their famous close harmonies. They were inducted into the Minnesota Rock/Country Hall of Fame in May 2006. The Andrews Sisters became the most popular female vocal group of the first half of the 20th century. Some of their accomplishments include : They sold 75–100 million records & recorded a little over 600 recorded tunes. They charted 113 singles with 46 reaching the Top 10 (more than Elvis Presley or The Beatles) They starred in 17 Hollywood films (more than any other singing group in motion picture history) They were the most sought-after singers in theater shows worldwide during the 1940s and early 1950s, always topping previous house averages. The trio headlined at the London Palladium in 1948 & 1951. They recorded 47 songs with Bing Crosby, 23 of which charted on Billboard, thus making the team one of the most successful pairings of acts in a recording studio in show business history. This song was originally recorded in 1949. I don’t believe it was ever released as a single. The song was written by Al Stillman, Paul McGrane and Ray Bloch & includes Vic Schoen and his orchestra. It is kind of crazy that after all this time & all these songs, I am still coming across artists for the 1st time. Here is another. Gordon Lightfoot is a Canadian singer-songwriter and guitarist who achieved international success in folk, folk-rock, and country music. He is credited with helping to define the folk-pop sound of the 1960s and 1970s. His biographer Nicholas Jennings said "His name is synonymous with timeless songs about trains and shipwrecks, rivers and highways, lovers and loneliness. He is unquestionably Canada's greatest songwriter." The list of artists that have recorded his songs goes on & on & The Guess Who even recorded a song called "Lightfoot" on their 1968 album Wheatfield Soul; the lyrics contain many Lightfoot song titles. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2012. During his career he has released 19 studio albums, 3 live albums, 16 greatest hits albums and 46 singles. This song comes from Back Here On Earth it was his 4th studio album & it was released in 1968. The only single released from the album was a song called Bitter Green, but it did not chart in the states & only got to #44 in Canada. He didn't have his 1st top 40 hit in the US until 1971. Gordon is currently on tour & he is 84! Affair On 8th Avenue by Gordon Lightfoot www.youtube.com/watch?v=D05h4c_Nfks

As can be seen from the video, this song comes from an album called Steven Soles & Friends. It doesn’t really say who those friends are, but according to the info I could find it could be some very famous people. Steven Soles is an American singer-songwriter, record producer, and guitarist. Known also as J. Steven Soles, he was asked by Bob Dylan to join the band for his 1975–1976 "Rolling Thunder Revue" tour, he appeared on Dylan's album "Desire" and he also played with Dylan on Street Legal and the following tour, including the live album Bob Dylan at Budokan. When that tour ended, Soles and two other members of Dylan's band, T Bone Burnett and David Mansfield, formed The Alpha Band. Steven went on to produce or perform on albums by Dylan, Burnett, The Washington Squares, Bob Neuwirth, Steve Poltz, Peter Case, Elvis Costello, Roger McGuinn, Don McLean, The Monkees, The 77s, Olivia Newton-John, Roy Orbison, Tonio K, Victoria Williams, Steve Scott and others. He was part of the highly acclaimed Cinemax special Roy Orbison and Friends, A Black and White Night. As J. Elvin Bishop is a blues and rock music singer, guitarist, bandleader, and songwriter born in Glendale, California. In 1963, Elvin met harmonica player Paul Butterfield in the neighborhood of Hyde Park. He joined Butterfield's blues band, and remained with them for five years. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of that group in 2015 and the Blues Hall of Fame in his own right in 2016. Elvin's daughter Selina and ex-wife Jennifer Villarin were murdered along with three other victims in an August 2000 crime spree. The culprits were later identified as Selina's then-boyfriend Glenn Taylor Helzer, Helzer's brother Justin Helzer, and accomplice Dawn Godman. The murders reportedly occurred as part of a scheme to extort money from an elderly couple from Concord, California. Both killers were sentenced to death for the murders; Justin Helzer, blind and partially paralyzed from an attempt on his own life while incarcerated, committed suicide in San Quentin prison. During his career he has released 22 studio albums with the most recent one coming in 2020. He has also released 5 Live albums & 4 compilations. This song comes from his 10th album, it was called Big Fun & it came out in 1988. Oklahoma Country Girl by Elvin Bishop www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtjHPzuy9EY

Susan Herndon is a singer-songwriter from Tulsa. The Tulsa World has called her one of the "region's most talented musicians". Asked whether she considers herself a folk artist or a singer-songwriter, Susan said she sees herself as "definitely more a songwriter," explaining that her "songs dictate (the style)" and form taken by her music as a whole. It appears as though she has released 5 albums so far but the most recent one came in 2010. We have breaking news on that front, she has a brand new album called Big Blue Beautiful Dream, that has just been released in the past week. This song however, comes from an album called Cowgirls n Angels. It was a soundtrack to the 2012 movie starring James Cromwell & Bailee Madison (she was a young Snow White in the TV series Once Upon A Time). Sugarland is a country music duo founded in Atlanta, Georgia. The duo consists of singer-songwriters Jennifer Nettles (lead vocals) and Kristian Bush (vocals, guitar, mandolin). They were founded in 2002, at which point Kristen Hall (vocals, guitar) was also a member, she was still al member when this song & album were recorded & was a co – writer of the song. There always seems to be a money issue: Kristen left the band unexpectedly in December 2005. According to both Bush and Nettles, Hall's reason for her departure was to "stay home and write songs" and they both supported the decision. In July 2008, less than three years after Hall left Sugarland, she filed a lawsuit for $14 million against Bush and Nettles stating that she was being excluded from sharing profits as had been agreed upon after her departure. Hall claims to have coined the name of the band and allowed Bush and Nettles "to obtain equal co-ownership of the trademark and service mark"; Hall's name is listed on the trademark for "Sugarland". Both Nettles and Bush had countered Hall by stating that no profit-sharing agreement had been made with the duo before Hall's departure. The lawsuit was eventually settled out of court in November 2010, although the details regarding the settlement agreement were not disclosed; both parties were given until December 13, 2010, to complete the agreement. After Kristen departed they remaining two were nominated for 5 Grammy Awards & won 2 in 2009 for the song Stay. They have released a total of 6 studio albums, 1 Live album & 18 singles including 5 #1 hits. This song comes from their debut studio album, Twice The Speed Of Life, released in 2004. The album went to #3 on the Country albums chart & #16 on the Billboard Top 200. It has been certified as a triple Platinum seller. It included hit singles Baby Girl, Something More, Just Might (Make Me Believe) & Down In Mississippi (& Up To No Good). Tennessee by Sugarland www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEF1ebsY6sQ

The Lovin' Spoonful is a rock band popular during the mid- to late-1960s. Founded in New York City in 1965 by lead singer/songwriter John Sebastian and guitarist Zal Yanovsky. They added members Joe Butler & Steve Boone before they hit the big time. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. In 2006, they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. Just as an aside, John Sebastian’s godmother was Vivian Vance ("Ethel Mertz" of I Love Lucy), who was a close friend of his mother. If there aren’t money issues, something else is going to pop up: Zal Yanovsky left the band after the soundtrack album You're a Big Boy Now was released in May 1967, primarily due to a drug bust in San Francisco. He was arrested for possession of marijuana and pressured by police to name his supplier. He was a Canadian citizen and feared that he would be barred from re-entering the U.S., so he complied. The incident resulted in a public backlash from the counterculture against the band, with a full-page ad in the Los Angeles Free Press (according to music critic Ralph Gleason) "urging people not to buy Spoonful records and not to attend their concerts and, to the girls, not to ball them." The band released just 5 albums before the bottom fell out. This song comes from their 3rd album. It was called Hums Of The Lovin Spoonful & it was released in 1966. The album got to #14 & included the #1 hit Summer In The City, #10 Rain On The Roof & this song which got to #8. It was their 7th consecutive Top 10 hit but also the final time they would accomplish that feat. That whole rat thing took its toll. He also did the theme song for Welcome Back Kotter. interesting side note, he and Zal were in a group in NYC called the Mugwumps. The other 2 members were Denny Daugherty and Cass Elliot who would of course go on to their own famous group The Mamas and Papas.

We have heard from Emmylou a couple of times already, so her biographical info should be pretty well known by now. During her career she has won 14 Grammys & been nominated for 34 others. She became a member of the Grand Ole Opry in 1992 and an induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008. In 2018, she was presented the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1971, members of the Flying Burrito Brothers saw her perform; former Byrds member Chris Hillman had taken over the band and was impressed by her, and briefly considered asking her to join the Flying Burrito Brothers. Instead, Hillman recommended her to Gram Parsons, who was looking for a female vocalist to collaborate with on his first solo album, GP. Harris toured as a member of Parsons's band, the Fallen Angels, in 1973. Later that year, Parsons and Harris worked on a studio album, Grievous Angel. Parsons died in his motel room near what is now Joshua Tree National Park on September 19, 1973, from an accidental overdose of drugs and alcohol. Parsons's Grievous Angel was released posthumously in 1974, and three more tracks from his sessions with Harris were included on another posthumous Parsons album, Sleepless Nights, in 1976. This song comes from her album Elite Hotel. It was her 3rd studio album & it was released in 1975. The album became her 1st #1 Country album. It included the singles Together Again which went to #1 (& included her version of The Beatles Here, There & Everywhere as a “B” side), One Of These Days #3, & Sweet Dreams which also hit #1 for her. She co – wrote this song with Rodney Crowell. The two of them will write & perform together for years & in fact they still are. Amarillo by Emmylou Harris www.youtube.com/watch?v=t14dPleQ-5g

It never seems to be too difficult to find a controversy: This song comes from his 14th studio. It was called Old Ways & was released in 1985. Neil has referred to this album in interviews as Old Ways II, as he had originally planned to release a country album titled Old Ways in 1983. His record label, Geffen, objected to this, asking him for a "rock 'n roll" album, which Young would give them in the form of 1983's Everybody's Rockin'. After a lawsuit with Geffen ended in a settlement in favor of Neil, he proceeded to complete the unfinished Old Ways by writing a few additional songs to fill it out. Old Ways I would have contained many still-unreleased songs, one of which, "Depression Blues," would later appear on Young's Geffen-era compilation Lucky Thirteen. The title track and "Get Back to the Country" were released as singles with accompanying music videos, but like with his previous videos, MTV largely ignored them. The album was a near-total commercial and critical failure, and remains one of his lowest-selling albums to date. California Sunset by Neil Young www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_oIrKBmNi0

Stewart "Rhett" Miller II is the lead singer of the alternative country band Old 97's. He was born in Austin, Texas. He got the nickname "Rhett" because his mother liked Rhett Butler from the movie, Gone with the Wind. I see the statement to be kind to people because you don’t know what they may be going through. This guy seems to be an example of that: As a kid he attended St. Mark's School of Texas, a private boys' school in North Dallas. He has said that his time there was very difficult, and that he was ostracized and bullied. His depression culminated in a suicide attempt at the age of 14. As part of the process of recovery he turned to music and started to play in bands in high school and became a local folk performer, headlining in small venues and opening for such nationally touring artists as Rosanne Cash, Chris Isaak, and The Lords of the New Church. During his career he has been a part of 21 albums as a member of the Old 97’s & 8 more as a solo artist. This song comes from an album called The Instigator. It was his 2nd solo effort & it came out in 2002. The El by Rhett Miller www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6_iXmLjCcA

Walter Horton, known as Big Walter (Horton) or Walter "Shakey" Horton, was a blues harmonica player born in Horn Lake, Mississippi, he grew up in Memphis & lived most of his adult life in Chicago. He died of heart failure in 1981 at the age of 60, in a neighbor's apartment. His death certificate also mentioned acute alcoholism. Willie Dixon once called him "the best harmonica player I ever heard." Robert Palmer named him as "one of the three great harmonica soloists of modern blues", with the two others being cited as Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson II. Walter was posthumously inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1982. In 2008, he was honored with a marker on the Mississippi Blues Trail in Horn Lake It appears as though he released just 8 albums between the years 1964 & 1998, but 2 of those were released posthumously. This song comes from an album called Walter Shakey Horton With Hot Cottage & it came out in 1974. Joe Chicago by Walter Horton www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_ANX0Nsruw

Buddy Knox was a singer and songwriter, born in the farming community of Happy, Texas. He is probably best remembered for his 1957 rock hit song, "Party Doll". The single sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold record. It was his only #1 hit single & the 1st of just 2 top 10 hits for him. In 1997, he experienced a fall and injured his hip. The doctor informed him at that time that he had terminal lung cancer. He scheduled a farewell show, but died just a few weeks later on February 14, 1999, in Bremerton, Washington. He was 65. He said the fame took a toll on his family life. Traveling 250 days a year for 35 years, he was voted "the most traveling entertainer in the world" by Billboard magazine, but he said it cost three marriages for him. This song was recorded & released as a single in 1970, but it did not chart. It seems to have not been released on an album at the time, but it may have made it to later compilation releases. We get another chance today to hear two songs with the same name, but entirely different styles & approaches. Lorenzo "Laurel" Aitken was an influential Caribbean singer and one of the pioneers of Jamaican ska music. He was born in Havana Cuba. He died at the age of 78 from a heart attack in 2005 in Leicester England. His 1958 single "Boogie in My Bones"/"Little Sheila" was the first Jamaican popular music record to be released in the United Kingdom. Laurel was known as the Godfather of Ska, and led the band The Pressure Tenants. He was renowned as a major influence on bands such as Madness, The Specials and Bad Manners. It appears as though this song was recorded in 1962, but I don’t find any evidence of it ever being released as a single here in the states.
