Oh my Gosh!! I love this new show!!!
I've been watching the previews on FX for some time and have been intrigued. The show is so much more than I could have imagined. It's based in the 1980's and it is about a bunch of talented people who don't quite "fit in" to regular society. Lots of really complex characters. And Color! And Costumes! And Music! And Dancing! Along with great drama! I'm hooked!
Punkin I tried watching but I was not getting it at all. Did they really break into the MET and steal valuable museum clothing and then wear them??? I just was not figuring the purpose of all that. Then I changed the channel to Breaking Homicide as I had a few episodes to catch up on.

I didn't get the beginning either. I was disappointed and almost gave up on it. But then it started getting into the characters and perked my interest. A lot of them are transgender. By the end I was invested in the characters and costumes. But it's probably not for everyone.

I saw a poster for it today! Is it about NYC in the 1980's? Because I'm a sucker for anything that makes me nostalgic for my hometown.

I've loved ballroom culture from the 80s ever since I watched Paris is Burning so I decided to give this a shot. I liked the sense of family and belonging these characters have for each other. I'm rooting for House Evangelista. Not sure how the Evan Peters character is going to tie into all of this, but it doesn't look good. :/

I remember seeing 'Paris is Burning' with my mom. I was 17, we both loved it. I'd love to see it again to see what I think now.
Now I *have* to give this show a try!

It is NYC, Beer! I'd never heard of Ballroom Culture before this show. Now I'm fascinated with it! I found Paris is Burning on Netflix! Thanks for the recommendation, Kao!

It's too soon to tell whether or not I'll like this show. It's very much like the movie "Paris Is Burning," which MFWalkoff first told me about. I DO love the storyline between the business man who works for Trump (sorry, I don't know the character's name) and the transsexual hooker he picked up on the street. I hope they develop that storyline further and not just make that a one-time fling.
True, this show is not going to appeal to everyone, but I like diversity, so I'm going to give it a chance to grow on me. It's basically a story about the struggles that LGBTQ people face when rejected by their families and by society. The dress-to-impress balls they throw is their way of creating a society of their own where they feel they can belong. I'm probably not explaining this very well,....maybe MFW will see this thread and offer a better explanation .

I loved PIB but I don't think I can watch it again. I did some research on the people in it and literally everyone in the movie is dead now.

Because of the AIDS Crisis. NYC was decimated because of it. I was young, but I remember going to our our favorite restaurant and it seemed like everyone was gone. In an instant.

It was AIDS, a lot of cancer (probably from bad/illegal hormones), drugs, kidney issues, murder. You name it, it happened to them. I'm glad that they are immortalized thru the film, and from the people that knew them.

I have a weird love-hate thing for the Trump employee who's secretly involved with Angel. On the one hand, I think he's a scum bag for lying to his wife and sneaking around behind her back. On the other hand, I think it's endearing how he doesn't judge Angel because of her lifestyle, and even moreso because he admires her for having the courage to be her true self all the while admitting he puts on a facade just to get through another day since he hates everything about his stuffed shirt life. I don't know whether to cheer him on or boo.

Angel's just interested in being in a situation that is safer for her; that's why she switched from working the docks to the peep show. Not sure if the Evan Peter's character will be good for her because he's obsessed, yet repulsed. I haven't forgotten that scene where he was scrubbing his mouth out after kissing her. I felt really bad for Blanca last night (being thrown out of that gay bar and then being arrested). I wish I could say that things are better now, but unfortunately there are those who wish that the "T" from LGBT would disappear. :/ It was shady of Elecktra to bail her out and then direct her to the nearest subway stop as she hopped in her car, lol. I know Elecktra is supposed to be the bad guy but she's so beautiful and elegant looking; I could stare at her all day. Line of the night: "I can cut you, and all that will come out is dust...and rings to count." Ouch! Little Damon had his first kiss. I hope this guy doesn't distract him from his goals. I love this show!

I think Angel truly cares for Stan (I Googled the character's name so I wouldn't have to keep writing "the Trump employee"). I agree that Angel took the peep show job because it seems a safer bet than working the docks, but I also think she's torn between wanting to guard her heart and letting herself fall for a guy so seemingly different from herself. I had forgotten all about Stan's teeth brushing moment of disgust. I'm hoping their relationship doesn't end up with one of them killing the other. That would be such a letdown. I want to see their dynamic continue along the line that it's going, but getting messier and more complicated with each time they meet. Blanca is a second favorite character of mine. I don't care much for Elecktra, but Blanca is a nice ying to her yang. I'm not quite understanding why she wasn't welcome in the bar, but I guess that's a prejudice I may never understand. It's too soon for me to say that I love this show, but it is starting to grow on me. I'm not really feeling the ballroom scenes, but I can get why others may appreciate that aspect. I wasn't alive when AIDs was at its peak of mass hysteria. I wasn't around for Stonewall, Harvey Milk or any of the other groundbreaking moments in LGBTQ history. I wish, in a way, I was. But for now I'm more into the storyline of the character's lives. I want to see where everyone is headed. Off topic side note: Kao, did you see where they're talking about a QAF reunion? I absolutely loved that show, and all the original cast members are expected to return. I hope it actually happens. They're all 15 years older so it would be interesting to see where they would take the character's lives. It's not likely Brian, Justin and the gang would still be hanging around at Babylon. Heck, even baby Gus would be a teenager! Recent photo of the cast:

I never watched QAF, but I'm glad they're having a reunion!
Back to Angel and Stan: There is a certain type of man who is attracted, yet repulsed by transwomen. They want to be with transwomen, yet are ashamed of this desire. The best case scenario is like what Elecktra has: A loving sponsor who will take care of her. Unfortunately, that is rare. What is more common is that the man eventually turns on her and kills her. Transwomen (especially POC) have a 60% higher rate of homicide than any other group, and nobody cares when they are murdered because they are considered as disposable people. So while I would like Stan and Angel's relationship to turn into something real, if Ryan Murphy goes on historic accuracy Stan will kill her, then go on with his life. Which is a shame because Angel is so pretty and sweet.

At least we now know why the dance teacher has an issue with ball culture. Seeing her former student in that condition, along with getting that phone call, had to be heartbreaking.
I'm seriously appalled at Elecktra, and I'm seriously wondering why she has any girls in her house, because she treats them horribly. It's bad enough that you get them to help you knock off a SA bucket in front of Macys, but to then take all that money and use it only for you (while telling your children to expect Christmas gifts) is horrible. Contrast that mess to the House of Evangelista; their clothes designer was invited to the family Christmas dinner. Everyone got a gift that was not only tailored to them, but was also thoughtful in nature. And when the turkey burned, everyone went out to the restaurant where they ate and drank. Blanca's house operates as a family. Elecktra's does not.
And speaking of family, I understand why Stan did what he did. His boss is a creep, and his family must come first. However, I felt very badly for Angel as I watched her put on her face cream and bake cookies for a man who was a no call, no show. I have a bad feeling that this won't end well for her.

So many twists and turns this week! Last week's theme was womanhood. This week's theme was motherhood.
First you have Elecktra finally deciding to go through with the gender reassignment surgery. However, while in the hospital, her children are nowhere to be seen, and are even competing in balls without her. Blanca is the only person to go see her, and she brings up the fact that Elecktra should be surrounded by flowers and children but isn't, because she's a crappy mother. Truer words have never been spoken.
Meanwhile Blanca finds out that her mother died. Her sister doesn't want her to go to the funeral, even going as far as to say that their mother told people Blanca was dead. Blanca goes to the funeral anyway with all of her children and Pray Tell. After Pray Tell lets Blanca's relatives have it for talking about her, they invite her to the wake at her sister's house. What happens at the wake is one of the most cruelest and ignorant scenes I've seen on TV in a while, as both Blanca's sister and brother get verbally abusive and violent to her just because she wanted her mother's cookbook. What's really gross is that statistically you're more likely to be sexually abused as a child by a "straight" member of your family (hi, Duggars!) than by a gay or transperson, but the brfother accuses Blanca of molesting children just because she's trans. Apparently, Blanca's sister has a semi change of heart because she finds Blanca's address and delivers her mom's cookbook to her. She even calls Blanca Blanca instead of Mario, and treats her like a human being. What a concept! Blanca then makes pancakes with Damon. Awww.
The Stan/Patty/Angel triangle gets good this week when Stan does his job and the Big Boss gives him a promotion and a raise that cuts into his direct boss's pockets. Seeing this as some sort of betrayal, direct boss then goes to Stan's house and gives Patty Angel's name and the address of her love nest. Patty goes to the love nest only to find out that Angel moved out a couple of weeks ago. Patty somehow finds Blanca's address and goes there but the only person home is the child that's selling drugs, who offers to take Patty to the ball where Angel will be competing. Patty goes to the ball, and later confronts Angel on the street with the news she's Stan's wife! I can't wait until next week!
Is anyone else still watching this?

I'm watching and loving it!! I really hope it gets renewed for a next season, but I have my doubts. I absolutely adore the setting - I was a total club girl in the 80's (yes, I'll admit to it, lol, though not the ball culture). I lived in NYC in the mid 80's, and used to go to Danceteria, Limelight, The Garage....the fashion and music is just spot on! I'm definitely enjoying the soapy drama of the show - but I agree, gay culture in the 80's - it can't end well for most of these characters I do really like Angel though, and hope that somehow she ends up happy. And because it's the 80's, their end is inevitable, but I so don't want to watch either Blanca or Pray Tell die on screen.... ETA: Yikes! Thousands of posts at the old site, and I don't even have my picture here...I better get on the ball

The ratings rise every week, and they are probably going to do okay award wise, especially if they nom the actresses who play Angel and Patty.
Speaking of Angel and Patty, that was some confrontation! I was glad Angel put Patty in her place when she asked to see her genitalia. People have a way of focusing on the sex organs of transpeople that's really offputting. That said, Patty did everything that a woman in that sort of situation should do, and that's look out for herself. Go, Patty!
I felt really bad for Praytell this week. Everything from having that song on repeat to reading the entirety of House Evangelista during a dinnertime intervention was seeped in sadness for his own condition, and fear for this lover. I was glad that his lover told him not to mourn him for too long after he was gone, but to live his life to the most, and I especially felt for PrayTell when he got that phone call in the middle of the night.
Poor Bianca. Right when she thinks she's found a new beau, it turns out that he's slept with a lot of her friends/acquaintances and has a fetish for the transladies. I loled when they all confronted him at the ball. Interesting enough, the only person who seems to be having a decent relationship is Elecktra/her hot man, but that might change since she had the surgery; next week's previews hint heavily to him being pissed.
The ending scene between Angel and Stan had me feeling things. Hopefully he won't kill her. Stan's boss continues to be a jerk, and I hope he gets his comeuppance soon. Can't wait for Sunday!

I'm all caught up. Finally. These last 2 episodes were so emotional.
I wish they didn't cast Johnny Sibilly as Pray Tell's boyfriend. He's SO hawt -- !!!! They wasted his hotness in a character that dies after only 2 episodes. They should have cast him as someone else. I think he would have been good as a genuine love interest for Blanca. She deserves better than some creepy player guy. Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll bring him back for some flashbacks to the earlier days of his relationship with Pray Tell, before HIV ruined their lives.
I know I'm meshing two episodes here, but I was glad to see Angel get the cookbook.
I'd like to see 'Angel' and 'Blanca' both win an award for their acting. And while I'm handing out awards (lol) I want 'Stan' to get one too.
I probably shouldn't say this, but I still want him and Angel to see other. What is wrong with me? -- lol. The guy's a jerk for cheating on his wife and kids, but I just can't help myself. He has such good chemistry with Angel. There's such a raw honesty when they're together.
James Van Der Beek plays an a$$hole really well.
I can't wait to see how Christopher Meloni's character handles Elektra's big reveal.
