Fixer to Fabulous Italiano - Episode 4 - Marrs Family Take Tuscany - April 2, 2024 Oh wow, so much is packed in this episode, the trip to the marble quarry and Jenny having a panic attack due to her fear of heights. A trip to a tile maker. A trip to an old winery located inside an building that used to be a cathedral. A trip to an old friend and making "fat" pasta.
So much of renovating an old stone house has to be done by hand even pouring a concrete floor, partly due to modern cement trucks can't access the old homes on rural roads.
The focus is on the kitchen and a bit of the lounge. They decide to sandblast the varnish of the roof beams and return then to a matte wood look vs painting them white, which saves a good $10,000 of the budget.
The terra cotta floors are laid and you can see the difference between the old manufactured tiles vs the handmade one. The episode is full of some very good before and after shots of floors, and the plastered and unplastered walls.
Really like the soft green cabinets, carbon black stove and refrigerator, and marble counter tops. You also see them installing the new wood doors and windows. Very sturdy and thick. I do like that they left a bit of the original stable wall (now new kitchen) unplastered. Very simple lines, soft colors, it's new construction but it looks old. Very classic, timeless.
The timeline has moved from 6 months to 9 months but August is coming and everything shuts down in Europe in August as everyone goes on holiday that month.
I am really enjoying the Italiano series and the producers and editors and cast is doing a great job with the story, showing the trades that still exist in Europe, and they are narrating the show with care and respect to the homeowners, to the trades, and to Italy.

Episode 4: Italiano~
I can't get over how much I'm enjoying this show, and part of the reason why is because they show the attention to detail and the craft involved in renovating this villa. It's interesting how most of the electrical lines were running through sections of the dug out floor and they covered it with concrete before layering on the terra cotta tiles. Those tiles were very nice and I can see why they used them despite the added expense. The handmade kitchen tiles were amazing; I really liked the olive leaf illustrations and just watching the artisan hand paint them. Sandblasting the ceiling beams was a much better solution than painting them, and that project turned out rally nice (and saved money as well). The new windows looked great, and that finished kitchen looked so cozy and amazing; truly a dream kitchen that would be wonderful to cook in that looked right at home with the rusticness of the house. I loved the green cabinets and the marble they chose for the countertops.
I'm really glad the wisteria survived! I also enjoyed the various field trips to the winery and the marble quarry, and I'm glad they took the kids because they're going to remember that trip forever. I like the "slice of Tuscany life" this show provides in addition to the renovation stuff, and I enjoyed seeing their friend having the kids help her prepare an Italian dinner for everyone at her house. Really looking forward to next week! We already know the timeline is going to be pushed even further because a lot of Europe basically shuts down in August, lol.

I believe he had some sort of health emergency that prompted all of the weight loss. He looked good bigger, and he looks good now.

Rock the Block Season 5 Episode 6 - Surprise Bedroom Redemption - April 8, 2024 48 hours to finish a bedroom and bathroom. Tile the shower and the floor, grout it, paint both rooms, install a vanity, a toilet, lighting in both rooms, built-ins if any, wallpaper, hang curtains, carry furniture up 3 flights of stairs, unpack said furniture and accessories, assemble said furniture if needed, dress the set, iron and wrinkles, and clean up the room of all debris. Yeah, so easy and peasy, and so misleading to the viewer. The teams judged each others rooms. The teams were not allowed to judge their own rooms. S&B: did a craft room and nursery & young child room.
Liked the simple panels on the walls. Nice feature. With the 10 ft plus ceiling height they stopped the panels 3 ft below the ceiling and painted that area a very very pale pink and below that white given the affect of having wood railings painted white below. There was a nice black modern chandelier that paired well with the black single bed and the black crib. There was a white table for crafting and the side tables were in a blonde wood tone. Every calm and elegant. The bathroom had a grey vanity, grey rock inspired subway tile, the bathroom floor was white penny tile. They used black faucets and shower heads, black trimmed mirror and gold scones. The doors where painted a nice medium blue.
K&E: did a bedroom and meditation room.
Painted the entire bedroom and bathroom milk chocolate brown. They had a very beautiful textured wallpaper on one wall. They had a built-in bookcase and tufted pillows for a meditation center. The bathroom had a white vanity and they used black faucets and gold scones for the lighting. They used the same peddle tile for the floor and shower surround that they used in the master bathroom for continuity.
P&M: did a bedroom and social media room.
Painted the entire bedroom and bathroom black, including the ceilings. They used a trundle daybed for a sofa, installed a huge pull down screen, and had podcasting equipment around the bed. They did put in a small desk by the window. The bathroom shower surround was black subway tile in a matte finish installed in a herringbone pattern on the back wall and stacked on the side walls. The floor was a white or very light colored tile.
Twins: did a bedroom and music room.
Nice tropical graphic wallpaper on the window wall. Bed on one wall. Desk on the other with two computers on it to imply a music studio. There was paneling on that desk wall and some of the paneling was hanging from chains from the ceiling. This paneling was sound proofing. This confused me as I thought you would need to soundproof the entire room with acoustical foam. Besides if you use head phones why do you need sound proofing? They did their standard bathroom. I can't really remember at this point.
Paige dinged the Twins for using mixed metal (black faucet and gold scones) in their bathroom but everyone was mixing metals in the rooms. Everyone I am sure was told was to say there was one tiny thing wrong in each room. However I do agree with both Mitch and Bryan that K&E should not have used brown grout in the bathroom instead of white as it looked too reminiscent of poop and it did not hide that some of the squares of tile were not quite lined up to the next square.
I just thought this episode was so stupid. It was stupid for the teams to do all that and film and not sleep. It would have been more realistic to do the challenge in 4 8 hour days and have the trades come in and paint the walls, hang the wallpaper, and do the tiling. You need 24 hours for tile to set, you need 24 hours for grout to set, then clean all the grout off, install the faucets, lights, toilet, and vanity. This was such an unrealistic challenge it just screamed dumb. This is HGTV's fault not the teams.
Sarah & Bryan won.

Rock the Block:
No way they did all that in 48 hours. They didn’t sleep?
Twins: it was ok. That wasn’t sound proof those few panels . It was nice and bright too.
The guys: it was too brown for me. Who wants to meditate in front of the bathroom door. Didn’t like the tile at all in there bathroom. You really saw the grout lines in the floor and made it look choppy.
Paige and Mitch: no to black…lol really take all the mic’s etc out the room was pretty blah.
Sarah and Brian: their room was nice and bright and didn’t mind it. I wouldn’t call it a craft room , it’s a children’s room. Saying that first thing I said was where is the bathtub.
They voted so good for them for winning.
Question…do they sell the furniture with the house or when it’s over take everything out.

Use one of those small plastic tubs and put it in the shower stall. We had a bathtub growing up but my parents put in a smaller plastic one in the regular tub and put in two kids at a time to wash. You don't need a regular bathtub to wash a kid.

Rock the Block - so dumb to expect proper tiling and painting in 48 hours. At least I saw Bryan properly burning in the shower tile where the twins were just slapping tile into the thinset. Boo. And aren't mixed metals the new hot thing?
K&E - I'm not a fan of brown but that bedroom was so pretty. The bathroom? Not so much. The brown grout looked like dirt and ruined the whole look.
S&B - a little light on the "crafts", but a cute, airy kids room. Nice bath.
Twins - again, light on the musical stuff but it was okay. Something besides two guitars and a couple headphones would have been nice.
P&M - I wouldn't even want/need a "social media room" in my house, and I certainly wouldn't want it to look like a cave. My least favorite room.
The finale is next week. Yay.

Fixer to Fabulous Italiano - Episode 5 - Old Ways Make New Problems - April 9, 2024 Timeline: July & September: August - Italy is closed for business: Finish line: Moved to October.
Budget: started at 400,000 euros now at 515,000 euros
What got accomplished?Sheep shed - got permit and new location and mostly built. Sign on house restored. Bathrooms one, two, and three done. Olive wood floors laid. Walls plastered. New Windows in living room installed and completed.
Fun fact: The property used to be used to breed cows.
Also some marvelous shopping trips to Florence for vintage wallpaper and vists to local trade shops to get the wood trough from the old shed cut and made into a vanity. Watching Dave drive around in his mini 3 wheel work truck was fun and was him using the mini excavator to level the land for the sheep shed. So much of the work done on the house is by hand using some really old tools. They were not allowed to make a foundation for the sheep shed and have to hand level each post using cement and a trowel. The same for the new living room windows. The frame is concrete brick and stone and you see them using a mallet to shape a stone to fit around the frame. Later they tiled the roof using the same kind of clay roofing tiles that had been used during the Roman Empire. No cement or nails used. Jenny was going for an vintage vibe using very classic materials for the bathrooms. All the faucets and shower heads were handmade in the USA of brass and had a matte finish. The shower walls used handmade square tiles in a stacked pattern, not my favorite pattern and I tend to hate the look of handmade tiles as the Moroccan ones are so uneven. I guess the Italians do a better job with the thickness of the tiles then the Moroccans do.
The smallest bathroom was the pink one. They used the 1960's vintage wallpaper in this room and the small table Jenny & Dave picked up at a local flea market and transformed into a vanity. Add vintage scones and a vintage mirror. Dave really liked the towel warmer and I want one of those if I ever remodel my bathroom.
The next bathroom used green tile for the shower surround and the shower head came out of the ceiling. The green bathroom had the wood vanity made out of the trough. It was a double sink vanity with a light grey stone top.
The largest bathroom used white tile for the shower surround and had the terra cotta bathtub and whitewashed white oak vanity. It was a good size bathroom.
This show is so loving and respectful of the renovation process and of the centuries of tradition, and knowledge behind the building trades. It just makes me feel good watching.

There were going to be problems just because it is a stone building in a remote area, there are the permits and historical restrictions, there were going to be problems. I think Jenny and HGTV must have thrilled about sourcing materials in Italy. It is very obvious this was over a year long project more likely two years even with the Marrs starting the series in November 2022 and this episode being September 2023. Their friends obviously had contacted an architect and had floor plans drawn before they even started. I won't mind if this series maybe gives HGTV an idea of doing a renovation show in Europe.

I won't mind if this series maybe gives HGTV an idea of doing a renovation show in Europe.I would absolutely love this as long as it gets into the craftsmanship like this show does. A good part of what I love about this show are the little details like the knives, handmade tiles, and the wine holes. Houses like this are often a labour of love, and I'm sure there's people who bought a house in Italy/Spain/Budapest/France/etc for a song who would love to have their renovation televised. I also wonder if HGTV kicks in a little something for the reno as well; I know you have to start out with a renovation budget to even get on these shows but I can see them doing that. My partner has a coworker who was on HH, and while they don't pay people for appearing on the show one of their "yums" was having a poolroom in their new house and HGTV gave them $700 towards that.

Rock the Block:
Is it over yet? Does anyone even have any money left? These are supposed to be 4 bedroom houses but so far only the master suite and the flex area (which most of the designers turned into an extra suite) and this week’s bedroom makes only two. What about the other 2 bedrooms? Also, I would be angry playing that pitching game for only a 2 minute advantage to getting the furniture; at least give them three!
Twins: Music Studio: It’s fun, but has “bedroom doing double duty as an office” vibes I can’t get past. Maybe if there was some division between the sleeping and studio areas? Guitar frames were cute, and I’m crazy about those floor tiles in their bathroom.
K&E: Meditation Room: I have to admit their bathroom was super chill and relaxing. Chocolate is a bold choice of color, but needs to be accompanied by a lighter color because it can be extremely overwhelming in smaller spaces and I’m glad thy used that light, striped wallpaper as a focal wall. I agree with M who said that their bathroom wasn’t as calming as their bedroom/meditation space. I didn’t mind the brown grout but I understand why people felt a certain way about it.
P&M: Social Media Room: Is this supposed to take the place of the at home recording studios of yore? *watches rest of episode* Okay, I get it now, it’s a dedicated space that influencers can have to film their videos at home. Hurray for using color! It looks very comfortable to film in, and the room itself has enough attractive details without being overbearing in the shot. Bathroom was dark, but super cute and fit the rest of the suite.
S&B: Craft/Baby Room: What’s going on here? I don’t know if it’s the way they arranged the room or what, but the sleeping, baby, and craft areas are very well defined. It’s light, airy, and is overall a great use of the space. It would be the idea setup for a visitor with a very young child. Of course they won because while a meditation, music studio, or social media room would only attract certain clientele everyone has relatives/friends with small children that would love to visit. S&B made a very smart choice.

Folks do not need that much space for social media or a music room they normally transform a closet big enough for them to get a desk in, sound proofing, and their recording equipment.

Rock the Block Redemption Season 5 Episode 7 - Final Redemption - April 15, 2024 - Season Finale - 2 hours too longI am a little biased toward Sarah and Bryan and think they should be the winners. It is a very tight race between Sarah & Bryan and Keith & Evan in my opinion. Then Paige & Mitch with The Twin Terrors a far distance last place. Why is this episode two hours long? Yes there was an additional challenge and the teams had to do the upstairs loft and laundry area. Lets us just say the budgets were fake as if us regular homeowners would not be able to get custom bookcases, office desk built-ins, custom hand painted wallpaper, built-in laundry cabinets, sinks, and washers and dryers on the limited budgets that the teams had. S&B - had $19,000, with the extra money from winning last episode. They spent $11,000 on a jet ski so had only $8000 for the both the loft and laundry area and with the washer and dryer costing $1130 that left under $7000 to complete both rooms in a week. K&E - had $8000 left and did a white oak built-in desk and laundry room. P&M - had &9000 left and did a custom bookcase/reading nook and laundry. The Terrors - had $5000 left and did a built-in desk bookcase combination and patterned grass cloth wallpaper, laundry, sink, and dog washing station. This was the third laundry they had installed in the house. With only three bedrooms in the home who are all these people doing all this laundry? Jonathan (property brother) and Ty walked the houses and to be honest I was getting nauseous going from house to house, from floor, to floor, from room to room, my head was spinning. It was overwhelming. Then all four teams were doing tours of their homes and again I was going from house to house, from floor to floor, from room to room, and my head is spinning thinking about it. It was simply TOO MUCH. I do not like that they do not do a house by house breakdown of the assessed values. The homes were valued at 1.7 million to start with a $250,000 renovation budget, and a $25,000 pool budget, not including any extra monies from winning each week. The winning house was valued at $2.3 million. There was a difference of only $20,000 between the winner and second place. I was never so disappointed in finding out Lyndsey and Leslie won this season. I was sick in my mouth, my head hurt, I was gut wrenched. What a load of crap. I am thinking they won based on having the solar panels and battery storage as I felt they were in last place the entire season. The ego of the nasty mouthed one will be impossible to deal with. HGTV needs to burn the digital files and thrown away the ashes. This show was a total disappointment, totally unrealistic timelines. If these homes were really finished in 6 weeks I would sincerely question the quality of all the workmanship. Just a total YUCK Festival.
To top of insult to injury the last couple of minutes was a trailer for the Property Brothers new HGTV show where they invest in peoples property projects. Some of the prices I heard were ridiculous. The idea of spending that much to stay in a property for one night is ridiculous, that is why Hotel 8 and Red Roof Inn are around.

Rock the Block:
Yeah I think Brian and Sarah got ripped off but knew those solar panels would win. Sure wasn’t the house for me.
The boys: I loved their loft area and their laundry from last time.
Paige and Mitch: did not like that big circle thing and they too had another laundry.
The twins: had a good point on the dog wash being upstairs. Wasn’t a fan of the wall paper it was so busy .
Brian and Sarah : I was not a fan of their loft. Did not like the mural it looked washed out. The cabinets were to plain and cheap to me. They must have used to much space in the main bedroom because the laundry looked small. Plus I’m not going to the laundry every day to throw my wash in that cabinet…lol
Again we had one judge so only one option on stuff. I missed who did the appraisal of the houses? We used to see realtors from the area come in an appraise.

Fixer to Fabulous: Italiano: Episode 6 - Unveiling the Villa - April 16, 2024 - Italiano series final. A estimated 6 month renovation took a year. The house was supposed to be finished July 2023. They filmed the last episode in January 2024. I want that house. I never imagined myself in a 300 year old stone house on a hill in Tuscany but there is such a sense of sturdiness, of safety, of security living in an old stone house with walls that are 2 to 3 feet thick with steel doors, and shutters that can come down on all the windows and doors. Using all of those hand made natural materials just resonates in the soul. There is such a sense of calm. I don't like green, and I don't like Jenny's preferred color palette but I do like what the Marrs did in that home. The original house had some nice big pieces of furniture that they reused. Adore the light fixtures, so big (needed in that space) but so simple. Luv the hand made floor tiles, even the handmade tiles in the bathrooms look good. Luv the old wood used for many of the tables. Like that they did some landscaping but also they made it look as if it had always been there. Overall the entire crew, both Italian and American did an excellent job.
I did like the finished sheep shed and the two new sheep that I think Jenny wanted to take home. I liked the hardscape they put down and the eating area they created. The new pergola was nice and Jenny and Dave confirmed the wisteria vine had survived the taking down of the old metal pergola. They also strung up lights under the new wood pergola. I like the outdoor lighting, very American Barn House style but it suited the stone building. I thought the paintings inside the house of the homeowners dog, Frisbee were adorable. The olive wood floors upstairs were stunning. Jenny and her team did a great job of putting together old pieces and new pieces. The walls didn't need too much, the new floors (wood and the hand made terra cotta tiles) the plastered walls, the sand blasted wood ceilings, the new wood doors, all crated a harmonious space, as was the improved flow in the lower and upper floors. Brava Jenny Brava.
This is what I want to see in a series, they way they filmed it, they way they show cased the materials, and the various handcrafts brought such joy especially after watching that car crash of a finale that was Rock the Block season 5 and example of what not to do.
I am also watching Restoring Galveston: The Inn on the Magnolia channel and this another shorter series within a main show that I really appreciate that the couple is restoring a boarding house from the 1930's in Galveston, Texas. I like the balance of restoration and modernization that needs to be done to a building like that and I really like how this couple tires to incorporate old pieces into the build.

Episode 6 Finale: Italiano~
It took a lot longer than expected, but the end results were lovely. I love how all the time, love, and skill went into renovating this villa so it was updated but still had all of the classic charm. The kitchen was absolutely amazing, and even though the marble they picked for the countertops was less expensive it still looked great. The olive wood floors in the bedrooms were lovely but the wood grain on it is a bit busy looking for my taste; you have to go with simple designs in the rooms because it can be overpowering. I'm glad they converted that small room into a wine room (complete with a "wine door") because it fits that whole Tuscan countryside theme; you're going to shop at the markets, tour vineyards and the small nearby villages, and relax in the evenings with a lovely glass or two of wine while getting to know your fellow travelers. I also think they're going to be living there as hosts (which makes the master bedroom with the expensive terra cotta bath make more sense) which is lovely. I'm really wondering how much they are charging for a stay because it looks extremely upscale even for Tuscany, and I imagine a lot of people with deep pockets would LOVE to stay in a renovated Italian villa.
More of this, HGTV. I remember "House Hunters International: Renovation" where they showed different homeowners buying and renovating properties in Spain, Mexico, Budapest, Italy, The Caribbean, etc., and the issues they had to face, but sadly they took it off Discovery +. I would love a one off series every year where the Marrs help a homeowner with their international reno job.

Found it! Unfortunately you can't rent single rooms; you have to rent the whole villa up to 6 nights, and there's a complimentary cheese and olive oil tasting as well as other nearby activities you can book. www.camposasso.com/Fees: Price per night: € 750 (5-6 night stays) Final cleaning: € 250 Refundable deposit x breakables: € 1000 2% credit card booking fee While the rate is somewhat steep, if you're doing a once in a lifetime trip to Italy with good friends/family and everyone chips in it's more than doable. I just looked at their schedule and they're pretty much booked from June-September this year so they're doing something right. I've also seen hotel rooms that cost a lot more without this sort of amenities and space so Campo Sasso is a better deal in a lot of ways.

Rock the Block Redemption Season 5 - Behind the Scenes - April 18, 2024
HGTV aired a one hour Behind the Scenes episodes at 11 am about 2 or 3 days after the season finale.
I did watch but fast forwarded a lot as it was just little tidbits. One night the Terrors decided to TP (toilet paper) Sarah and Bryan's worksite. I do think a lot of the tension we saw was "Made for TV". It makes the Horrors look really bad and I think it is stupid, it does not make me enjoy the show at all.
I think some of these HGTV executives have forgotten who their target audience is.

According to Reddit there's a bunch of stank going on with Rock the Block right now, including:
- Evan unfriending Paige on SM right after the last episode was aired
- Sara saying things like how shooting this season of RTB was "challenging" plus liking people's tweets/insta posts about how unfair it was the twins won and how it should have been either S&B or K&E who won
- Paige arguing with everyone on SM
- Nate and Jeremiah chiming in with their two cents claiming the outcome was fixed
- The Twins, Evan, and Jenny Marrs all having a lovefest on each others socials with Leslie saying that K&E helped them get to the end and Jenny saying that she loved them.
- Paige is STILL arguing with people online and is now saying that K&E were "very nasty" to her and also how hard it was this season "as a woman of faith." Hmmm. There are a few ways to interpret that statement, and none of them are particularly good.
- Overinvested people are on Tys Instagram complaining about the twins and some of them are blaming him for the win and why? He's the host, he's not voting!
- Apparently Paige's team wanted to incorporate the roof as part of their living space and were told that no one could do anything on the roof. She's not the only person salty about the solar panels.
Mess.

I have a hard time picturing K&E being nasty to anyone.
Paige must have been a real pain in the ass this season.
