Brother vs Brother Team Johnathan for the WIN! I didn't really love his house and I was also super surprised at how little the profit was on both houses, 6 for Drew, 14 for Johnathan. I was surprised since he only won 1 of 5 challenges; bet Drew was surprised. His location was stunning, though, and while I did not care for all the odd wall treatments, including the living wall, I loved the angled/tilted front window clad in that beautiful cedar. Did the respective charities get a pre-determined amount? I know Hilary on Love It or List It uses high end stuff so was wondering if the brothers do as well. One cannot help but spend to repair major structural issues but part of the renovation budget goes to furnishings and decor. Perhaps they could have spent less there. Their renovation budgets were huge as was the all in total. Such measly profits!!!

Good Bones - season 3 last episode the Big Purple House
I don't mind the color, it's pretty obvious that the entire area has a bo ho chic vibe and many homes have very strong colors. I was did find it a little hypocritical of the city to sorta side wise ambush the ladies claiming that they are doing "NEW" construction when they had to replace much of the house framing with new timber because either the wood was bad, old, or done poorly as it is a 100 yr old home. So they should have left it as is?
I just wish there had been a timeline as it is obvious it is all over the place considering the size of Mina's baby bump and of puppy Frank.
I do wonder if the basement is usable space considering they rebuilt or reinforced all the walls.
As always their finishes are great, as is the styling/staging of all the rooms. Who does the styling/staging, the ladies or do they have someone do it for them?
I am thrilled that there is a season 4.

I am thrilled that there is a season 4. I'm pretty sure that the ladies do it. Wasn't this last show the one where Karen was out of town at the end, and Mina had the guys do most of the staging under her supervision, because she was too pregnant to be moving/carrying big pieces of furniture. The implication, when she was talking about that, was that the two ladies usually do it by themselves. Of course, they have the delivery guys put things in the general area where the belong, but there's still a lot of moving things around.

I remember on the first season the staging furniture was delivered and Mina and Karen unloaded the truck and carried the items in the house by themselves. With this season (and a bigger budget, I assume) they have the brother, his friends, and some helpers do the moving because Karen can't move everything by herself, and Mina's pregnant. Once the items are in the house and set up where they are supposed to be Mina and Karen do the staging.

Their renovation budgets were huge as was the all in total. Such measly profits!!! The charity gets the difference between what it cost to renovate the house and what the house actually sold for. For other BvB series like NOLA it was a considerable amount, but the price of reno plus the price of housing in the San Fran area brought down their amount.
While I liked Drew's living rooms, baths and Air bnb suite I liked almost everything of Jonathan's house, and really appreciated the fact that it was eco-friendly. People in CA will pay more for those features, so it's no surprise to me that he won.

Flip or Flop - grr. The inside looked just fine, nice colors, liked the floor...but why did they take out the Storybook architecture on the exterior? They basically made it into just another boxy ranch. I've seen Storybooks updated without destroying the look, it can be done. Blah.

My sister finally sold her Storybook house for way less than it would otherwise have been worth, It had been on the market for a year and a half off and on. It's such a specific look that isn't most people's taste, and that makes them harder to sell.

But I really like them! I like the super-fancy Victorians, too, so I think my taste in houses is in the minority. They made a good chunk of money on it, so I guess they're happy.

We used to jokingly call it the Pinocchio house (like at Disneyland), but the people who finally bought it are absolutely in love with it. And I'm sure that the didn't mind getting a $1,000,000 for $750,000 either.

I had to Google Storybook architecture b/c I had never heard that term before wrt to style of homes. How utterly charming they are!

They can be super charming. When I lived in Westchester County in New York, there were some gorgeous ones. My sister's was more on the cartoony end of the genre.

I am about to say something some may find mean but am I the only one that thinks Taylor is unfortunate looking? I have never thought she was a cute child.

I never liked the fact that they allowed her to walk all over and sit on things like the kitchen sink, countertops and island when she was in diapers. Gross. As for her looks, well, she looks a lot like her father...unfortunately the features that look great on him as a man is aesthetically unpleasing on a young girl. :x

Tell me about it. She must be a first born to take after her father. I think I read that first borns look like their fathers to prove paternity. Anyway...

I know we often snark on reality television 'stars' but in my opinion comments about their children are off-limits. FWIW I think there is nothing wrong with Taylor's looks and she looks just like her daddy, who, in my opinion, is a very nice-looking man.
And Ariel, I've never heard that about first-born children looking like their dads; most folks tell me I am the spitting image of my late mother.

And some other styles, like Tudor, or log homes, for example, or Alpine style, etc. Each style is so very specific, as you said, waywyrd, that it's hard to find buyers. But I love so many of the unique homes, and I'm glad that there are still some people who will build them and not totally redo them.

I don't understand how Christina got a show, I don't think her likability factor is high. Most people I know think she is very high maintenance and shrill. After filming 7 seasons she is still not a very relaxed on air person.

Yeah. I read the comment section on that article talking about her new show and a lot of the comments were uncalled for and vicious as hell. IMO neither Christina nor Tarek are likeable people but the vitriol some people have for her...you would think she eats children, the way they act.

I've never been fond of her. She has always seemed high maintenance and entitled to me. She always came off as a spoiled rich girl to me.

On this week's Flip or Flop (July 5th) Christina was just a beyotch in regards to calling Tarek immature and rolling her eyes behind his back. Does she not realize that it is herself that comes across as a bitter, immature brat when she does that. I think some must be scripted as she proposed pink kitchen cabinets with an earthy brown tile as trendy retro ... that has to be totally fake as who would want that???

Post by waywyrd on Jul 6, 2018 11:53:24 GMT
I think the pink cabinet thing was totally made up so they could show Tarek picking the colors SHE usually picks, and Christina conceding that it looks great. Yeah, because those are the colors you use 99% of the time. Eyeroll. I wish they'd stop scripting silly drama into the show and just focus on the houses. I liked the weird dimensional tile in the bathrooms, but I'm glad I didn't have to grout that stuff. And the prices of homes in California still amaze me. For a million dollars I could get a palace on a lake here!

I also don't like that they show they design the house on the fly. Their change order fees would be astronomical if they really did that all the time.

Music City Fix - there were two episodes the July 4th week - I liked them. Did the editing improve? Either that, or they are showcasing the reveal move and letting the hosts explain what they did. I do miss them designing the bathrooms and kitchens and considering they do include the redesign in the Flip Flop shows 30 minute format they should be able to do so for this show. Kortney does amazing kitchens. Interesting that on the one house they did very dark blue and green walls and the trim was either black, dark grey, or green. Read very masculine, very urban, rustic. I don't think a small house could carry that color palette off very well. That and the back end of the house was simply flooded with light. I can understand the bedrooms being darker.
The other house, the semi-flipped house was interesting also as when Kortney suggested the Wonder Woman primary colors scheme I was "like NO". (Yes, at first it was super Patriotic color scheme but the original Wonder Woman costume is red, white, blue, and yellow and that is where my mind went.)Even when she had the family there painting the walls I was like no, this is not a good idea. Then I saw the wallpaper she wanted to use and was thinking, "is this woman insane"??? OK at the end it made sense I personally don't know if I would like all those colors and would prefer one of them as an accent, the solid blue wall and the blue and white wallpaper would be OK. The house did need either some color, or pattern, and or a lot of textures to ground it. While I like white, and the open vaulted ceiling it did look glaring on my TV screen without some color.

There's a new show coming on tonight where two hosts (a man and a woman) renovate someone's home, and then the homeowners decide whether to live in the house, or sell it and buy another. Excuse me, but isn't that the premise of "Love it or List it?" I used to love that show, but now there's way too many homeowners who want to ask for 250k worth of renovations on a 40k budget (and get an attitude with Hilary when she can't give them all that they want) and who only want to live in an area the size of a postage stamp (and also get an attitude with David when he can't find anything in their also tiny budget in that area). They're openly hostile and nasty to the hosts, and I can't stand it.

OK, I was bored and watched that new show "Stay or Sell" and it wasn't half bad! Not as much Love it or List it as I originally thought. The family had an extremely healthy budget (245k) for renovating their 1100ft house outside of Minneapolis. The hosts (a husband/wife team who are very engaging) tour the home, then told them ways they could help improve the home and add extra space. Evem more importantly, they told them when a particular feature wouldn't work, and why. In this case, the reno tag came to 140k or so, and they cautioned them against spending any more because of the real estate values in their area. Them, they took them to another similar house in a different area of their neighborhood, did a tour, and told them what they could do to reno that house (in this case add another floor to the home and an extension in the back).
The homeowners are given 2 options: renovate the house they currently have, or sell that house and reno the other house. They opted to sell, and you get to see all the good and bad that comes with a reno project. At one point there's a snowstorm that stops work for about a week. The wife host reaches out to the twin sister of the homeowner and makes this cool wall sculpture of a mirror and wood from the homeowners family cabin. Then there's the reveal, which was very nice. Loved the non-white kitchen, and the mural in the daughter's bedroom. They even did a fun gender reveal bedroom for the couple's soon to be born baby, and it was nice, despite using traditional colors. Basically, this show has all of the enjoyable features of Love it or List it, and none of the negatives. It's worth a watch.

Thanks! I wanted to watch that but it was passed my bedtime. I love Love it or List it and the new episode last night was really good. Hilary was at her best! She turned this small house into a place I didn't even recognize. I usually am on David's side but I would have had a really hard time choosing this go around.

This is the time HGTV airs one off episodes that act as pilots for potential shows for the 2018/2019 season. In this case Stay or Sell which, I liked because it was in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I like it when they showcase a series in a different part of the country, like Boise Boys is in Idaho. It is nice to see what the trends are in other parts of the country, what the history is in that part of the country and how that affects the house styles. Next week in that time slot they have a half hour show called Seaside Reno which I have set to record.
I liked how Heather Fox explained and displayed some of the Minnesotan turn of phrases "you betcha".
Luv'ed the snow.
For a 3,000 sq ft home I thought the dining room table very small. Did they also change the siding on the garage that sat on the back of the property?
The dark forest green cabinets are not to my taste and I thought would overwhelm the space and I was surprised that they really didn't use that many in the kitchen which was a good decision and it balances the green of the fireplace breast and window seats. The green of the kitchen cabinets actually looked nice, like a dark neutral on my TV screen. I do hate it that many times they do not put up TVs as that is how people live, with TVs.
