Kao, I totally agree that Alison knows how to do bathrooms and kitchens, which makes it so puzzling why her current team on Battle for the Beach fight her so much on design and space planning.

Not sure if this is the case here but some men really have issues with taking orders, advice, suggestions, etc. from women. Alison would have been better served working with Ty's team, to be honest.

Christina on the Coast - I prefer watching these shows on Max the next morning...no commercials and I can fast forward through the nonsense like the baby's birthday party. Cute, but not why I'm watching HGTV. Another couple declares to Christina that "we love color!" and end up choosing white, gray, and a dark muted blue for the kitchen. So colorful. I did really like that grungy blue tile they used in the bar area. Not a fan of the fireplace (that was supposed to be Spanish style??)...why spend big bucks on a designer and then go rogue and hire some rando friend of yours to tile the fireplace?

Battle on the Beach Episode 5 - Exteriors - July 2, 2023
What a blithering disaster this season and this episode are.
They are just now addressing that Team Ty's house has a structural problem with the deck? It is sinking.
No outside shower for any of the houses?
Team Alison and Taniya are twinsies.
How can you not communicate the need for a shower in the shack Team Alison?
Double episode next week...fix the mistakes and extra scenes. Then it is OVER. FINALLY.
Again I don't get the outdoor cooking. They obviously have a lot of bugs. Most folks I know shower and go into town for dinner as it is a chance to explore the neighboring towns, do a boardwalk if one is available. No one wants to cook on vacation.

BotB - I agree, this season is a mess.
Beachfront houses with no outdoor rinse-off showers so you can track all that sand upstairs. Outdoor cooking and eating so you can share with our plentiful southern bugs. Two houses were basically the same green color and the other was black. A black beach house. Have fun trying to keep that cool in summer.
Alison's team are a couple of chuckleheads. Butcher block counter outdoors, in the rain and elements? Come on, guys. Ty's team used their bamboo again, but nobody ever covers the raw cut edges. Just a strip of lattice or a simple 1 x 2 would look so much neater.
I don't cook on vacation, either, so all the fancy kitchens and grills would go unused by me.

Some chips and snacks if needed. Maybe some eggs or cereal for breakfast but mostly going out for breakfast and dinner. I am not going grocery shopping when on vacation.

It is so very windy out on the decks too; if you eat out there, hanging on to your chips, napkins, anything light would be a challenge! It's not fun to eat outside with your hair blowing in your face, things flying away, bugs around you, etc. I liked the screened porch idea a lot, but the black siding was a bad idea, and he wanted a WATERBED outside? Wow.
Alison's guys are a mess -- there's no way they're winning. They seem hard to work with.
I can't believe both teams chose the same colors for their houses and for their storage room/bathrooms, and ombre! So funny. The "communications" challenge was an interesting one, and I liked that it was a surprise when they took the judges in, that they hadn't seen in yet either. I agree about the bamboo edges, waywyrd, it looks unfinished. Kind of cheap too!
So I had been wondering about these huge glaring errors they'd made over the time there, but next week is a fix-it time? I wonder if they get any more money to do these repairs. There's no way they could leave the problems as is, so it's good they're tasked with fixing things. I wonder what the deal is with the sinking deck? That sounds like big money, and beyond the scope of this challenge, so it shouldn't be the team's fault if they don't fix that.

If I spent all day outside I would want a chance to shower and change clothes and have a nice meal out of the sun and wind. Next week two episodes. One fix it and one for behind the scenes. Note: Alison's Team wanted to build a privacy screen. Why the heck are these people concerned about privacy? You are on a public beach with hundreds of people running around and kids screaming all there to see the ocean or in this case the Mexican Gulf. You really think a privacy screen will fix that?

Alison's team has weird priorities. That privacy screen isn't really necessary, there was a decent space between houses so you're not right up on the neighbors. I hope they make them fix that stupid grill area where the wood countertop is directly touching the grill. How much privacy are you going to have when you burn the whole house down?

Battle on the Beach:Being honest here, but I had to watch this episode twice because I remembered pretty much nothing from my first viewing. It's exteriors, and that's not exactly a really interesting thing. Team Taniya: I liked a lot of this. I loved the swings under the porch so you can dangle your feet in the sand, and the way the seating and eating areas were arranged. I especially liked the little prep area with the sink by the porthole (which led to the kitchen inside). Team Ty: Their exterior was kinda a fave because when I think of the beach and the South I think of small flying insects, so having a screened in porch for warm summer nights is a must. I really liked how the screened in area was arranged; the problem was they didn't pay attention to the rest of the porch, and other than that marvelous table it looked pretty bare bones. Team Alison: Why do they have to disagree with her on everything? The arguing for a privacy barrier when you're at a BEACHHOUSE. The view is the draw. Maybe because I'm a city person, but I've never understood the "I need my next door neighbor to be half a block away because of privacy" people, and what really got to me was those houses aren't even that close; I guess acknowledging that you live in a community is too much for some people. They should have known better than to use interior butcher block materials for the deck, and while I liked how it incorporated the bbq in the prep area that untreated wood is a fire hazard. I liked the wooden ceiling that matched the ceiling in their living area in the house. Things I'm wondering about: Was there a sale on green exterior paint? Also, apparently next week is to fix whatever was put together raggedy, and we know which team will benefit the most from that!

Christina on the Coast - another client that says they love color, another client that ended up with white cabinets/backsplash and dark blue island. It looked fine. I do like all the undercabinet lighting they used, I'm going to have to do that one day in my crappy kitchen. New electric fireplace looked nice, though I would still prefer some kind of mantel above it. I had to fast forward through all the dog psychic stuff. Lawd hammercy.

Battle on the Beach finale:
They had one day and $5000 to do any last minute fixes and updates to add value. They're going to bring realtors in, to determine who added the most value overall.
I loved the adding of the screened in porch the guys did! That was amazing. I still didn't like the green interior finishes (except for the tiles which I liked the blues and greens). They still liked the big main bedroom, that bathroom, etc. The granite countertop outside was a nice addition, but I didn't understand why they chose a dark color, because it's going to get hot out there in the sun! Alison really loved their final day decisions, as opposed to most of their other decisions made this season! LOL
Taniya's group re-did their tiny dining table, added storage and some lighting in the kitchen. They finished their under-house bathroom too. I like this house, even with the dark kitchen. Not sure where the $5000 went, though. A table and some cube storage, paint, ??
Ty's group added an outdoor shower and a grill to their big deck. Their kitchen is still beautiful, to me, and they added under-cabinet lighting. They had to explain their handmade tiles in the bathroom, and that's why it looks so uneven, and they tried the shower out to show that the water won't spill out everywhere. Their extra bedroom is still strange with the 2 huge Willy Wonka beds, but that bathroom is beautiful. It was cute to see all the contestants on the beds, having some fun! I liked seeing all the mentors going around to the other houses too, checking out each other's houses.
After the realtors went through, the choice of winner was delivered. The largest return on investment is what they're looking at -- who added the most value. All three houses ended up being evaluated at over $1 million. And the winner is...
Ty's team! They had the most expensive house, and also added the most value. I really thought the 3-bedroom group might take it.
We have a preview of the Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge, where a lot of these same designers will battle it out to makeover a house into a dream house (with lots of pink). Christian looks like he'll be a judge! yay
Now we've got some Behind-the-Scenes, bloopers and outtakes. I hope we don't have to see much more of Kelsey pouting/quitting/sniping.

Battle on the Beach finale.
I am so angry and disappointed and very angry with who the winner was for this season.
Listening to Ty's and later Bryan's scripted dialog explaining about zellige tiles or handmade tiles made in Morocco which have become all the rage in that last 4 years or so was disturbing and the byproduct of a male cow's defecation.
For transparency's sake I do not like zellige tile, I do not like hand made tile. I want clean lines. I also hate stacked square tile with a passion. That being said the glaze on zellige tile is beautiful in how it catches the light.
I cannot believe that the real estate appraisers thought Ty's master bathroom was not a pile of sh*t tiling. Who picks a color of tile that looks like baby diarrhea? 99% of that tile was not set straight. And don't say it was because it was handmade tile. Ty's team used the same kind of handmade tile in the quest bathroom and it looked great. The other teams used similar handmade tile in their baths and showers and it looked great. It did not look great in Ty's master bathroom.
Can't believe those appraisers over looked that half ass micro mini closet that Ty's team built.
Ty's Team was known for not finishing their builds and that they were full of rough edges and splinters.
Can't stand Sarah B saying that Ty's team had the only living room facing the view. How the heck can you see the view, the screened in porch is in the way, as is the furniture, plants and lamps.
Anyone else notice that if you use the shower on Ty's Team's porch it will spray into the screened porch and anyone in that lounger?
I think that Ty's house still looked unfinished and a wreck. Yes it had a nice kitchen but that was it.
That was a really shady win.
What happened to getting a week to correct all the mistakes on rooms that they did in previous seasons?
Alison's Team should have had a shower put in the storage room if they had that extra week and time to fix the wallpaper in the powder room. But they only had one day and it was already after 10:30am per the tag on the screen.
Let's be honest Alison's Team had the best quality craftsmanship and least mistakes. I do think the green in the living room should have been more teal or turquoise like .
This was the worst season EVER.

Bearcata tell us how you really feel! I share the hatred for stacked 4 x 4 tile, but I do love the zellige tile. That said, their "explanation" of how handmade tile caused that garbage install was a bunch of crap. I saw lippage of at least 1/2 inch on some of them, they didn't mix the shade variations up, the lines were ridiculously uneven...no, that's not the tile's fault. It was the installer. As soon as I heard the excuses flying I knew who won. And I still think that double bed is stupid. Disappointing season.

The edging of the tile on the pony wall and that horrid vanity in Team Ty's master was so DYI and the appraisers didn't see that?
One of my neighbors is a real estate agent and has been sending me invites to Open Houses in the local community. I go and visit and keep her company for a bit. I also check out what the neighbors houses look like and what they did to get the house ready for sale. Declutter, declutter, declutter, and clean, clean, clean, fix all the holes in the walls, take down wallpaper boarders, and paint a nice neutral color, does wonders to show off a house for sale. Most neighbors still have the original brass lighting from the late 1990's. I hate inconsistent lighting and lets not get started on those makeup bar lights builders put in bathrooms, they are awful. Most homeowners don't change those out, they don't change out the old crystal handle Delta faucets either. Regardless of what HGTV preaches about upgrades and improvements folks don't do it and the house sells. I will say what I have seen is that if you put in a new higher vanity and new chair height toilet it makes a massive improvement to a bathroom. Refacing kitchen cabinets and new countertops make a huge impression even when I know the kitchen layout is not that great. One of the houses that my real estate neighbor listed had a DYI person as the homeowner and he never finished a project he started. It was so obvious especially on the second viewing of the house. He didn't want to spend the money on stuff he could do himself but it was not done well. He wanted top dollar for his home and it was listed for about $30,000 over what it should have been. In this area houses go the first day or first week for list price or slight over. His house is still on the market and they are doing price reductions. The home owner improved the bathroom tiles in the basement bathroom by painting them black. If he did crap like that what other stuff did he do that you will find later. Who wants to pay top dollar for someones DYI project gone bad. That is what amazes me about the crap bathroom. There is no way professional real estate appraisers would not ding that tile job and why I cry fowl regarding the winner.

Battle Of The Beach:
Hmmm. I just don't know. While I understand why, I'm still of two minds about it.
I'm so glad that people had the opportunity to add on things/clean up mistakes. Glad that Alison's team decided on concrete surfaces instead of that butcher block they had. Glad Ty's team used the opportunity to redo some of their sloppiness. There were things that I liked and didn't like about each property (my dream property would be a combination of the three) I think the reason why Tys team got the edge was not only did it look look something you would find at a nice beach resort, it had a screened in porch, and even with the North African flavor had enough "beigeness" that someone can really come in and put their stamp on things with accessories, furniture, etc without having to massively change things. While I loved Taniya's team's exterior the best the inside was pure European bistro/smokiness that you would associate more with a French apartment in the port city of Marseille than a beach town in the Southern USA. The same goes for Alison's team; that house was bold, vibrant, and unique. It's a bold house for a bold person-- the question is, will they find that person looking for property in that area? If this house was in Savannah near SCAD it would sell quickly because there's a strong creative class that supports that sort of thing. That might not be true where these beach houses are located.
With all that said, I think the horribleness of that damn tile should have knocked Ty's team out of the running. I hated the color, the fact that they stacked it as a rectangular vertical patter, the cauking that was the color of the tile, I hated it. I was excited to see how Ty's team would improve it but nope, they left it the same! I don't understand it. I like Zellige tile a lot; I've seen Erin and Ben use it last season on different properties on Hometown and it always looked fabulous. I rewatched the section where they were showing the bathroom and I think I understand why I hated it so much. First, I greatly dislike rectangular tile that's vertical. Secondly; parts of Zellige tiles are designed to reflect its surroundings, and they made everything matchy matchy (tiles, paint, grouting) and the same color, so those tiles aren't reflecting anything back but dullness. If they picked a contrasting paint color and had smaller tiles it would have popped and looked wonderful. The end result looked sloppy. I liked this team and the North African resort flavor they bought to the table, but their lack of attention to details...I really hope they have a company repair things, especially the sinking front porch.

Taniya's Team used it in their guest bathroom and it looked fabulous. There is simply no world the tiling in Ty's master bathroom is expectable. Their excuse that the tile did not show well because it was hazy due to the team not cleaning off all the grout smear was unbelievable. What that team needed to do was demolish that vanity, remove all the shower wall tile and redo it, and install a nice new vanity with storage. The beige on beige on beige color palette was just not done well.

Windy City Rehab - The Cost of Compromise - July 11, 2023 Alison does her friends new house.
The budget gets blown from $250,000 to $400,000. Not Alison's fault.
To be honest I get fed up with all these people who can afford these huge homes and $17,000 antique French marble fireplace mantels.
I personally do not want to entertain people in my home. I consider my home my sanctuary and not a place for people to tramp through and for me to clean up afterward. Get thee gone, better yet never show up.
I do enjoy how Alison can put together a home as to be honest that second furniture piece she picked for the master bedroom bar looked ugly as heck to me.
I do like that that house was one of her first projects out of college and nothing had really changed in the 20 plus years since she had done it. Interesting to see how her style has evolved. Clean lines, and let the materials speak for themselves. It was a clean and classy home by the time they were done. One note, considering all the entertaining the couple wanted to do I noticed a distinct lack of seating in the living room.

Windy City Rehab:No more Oak Park. We're in NV this week with a really good friend of Alison who wants a refresh for her house. It was one of Alison's first design jobs, and as a creative no matter what the type it's always a good feeling when you revisit past work and see how much your skillset has grown. I was less into this house than some of the others she's done this season, but it was still lovely once finished. I wasn't paying attention; did they get into why the costs ballooned that drastically? Going from 250 to maybe 275 or even 290k I can understand if they stumbled on something electrical or structural but 250 to 400k is a huge jump.

Going from 250 to maybe 275 or even 290k I can understand if they stumbled on something electrical or structural but 250 to 400k is a huge jump. Antique shopping in Paris. A 400 yr old mantle from a French castle that cost $17,000 but they got the price down to $14,000. I am sure shipping that to Nevada cost about the same as the price for the original mantle. The bride to be/Alison's BBF also had expensive tastes. Plus in addition to Alison's Paris shopping the ladies did at least two shopping trips to Chicago for accessories and the one trip cost at least $9000. Those bifolding doors can cost up to $20,000 to $30,000. They were putting in huge trees into the courtyard. That had to be two to three thousand per plant. The house was around 4000 sq ft and they redid the entire ground floor which includes the kitchen, and the master bedroom and bathroom. You know that kitchen was probably a $70,000 plus kitchen and that bathroom close to $30,000. Alison laughed at the budget, which was between $250 - $275 and said right off the bat it would be more like $300 - $330. They also added to the scope of work. The master bedroom and master bathroom were not in the original scope of work.

Thanks, Bearcata. I remember the shopping trips in Paris and Chicago but thought that came from the initial budget. While I remember her laughing and saying the work they wanted would be around 300k my mind completely skipped over the ballooning of the budget until you mentioned it. Anyone else watching the crazy Barbie Dreamhouse show?

Barbie Dreamhouse:
I admit I had my reservations at first, but this is a really delightful show. The basic premise is HGTV bought the most generic McMansion that was ever built in Southern California and hired 8 teams consisting of the usual suspects to Barbie the hell out of it. Too keep things interesting only two teams are competing at a time, and each team is given a room in the house and a certain era of Barbie to work from. They also have access to the Barbie Archives and the dreamhouses across the years for research purposes. To make things easier, each team is given their own team of design assistants to source things, contractors, tilers, etc so this is not a repeat situation of "Battle On The Beach." I think the proceeds are going to the winning teams favorite charity, and in addition each team has an online fan picked from thousands of Barbie fans that will have the opportunity to get flown in and stay at the home for 2 days after it's completed. It's low-stakes, fun, and because of the Era restriction each team's work is completely different.
Who signed up for this hot mess, you say? As I said, the usual suspects:
- Egypt and Mike from We're Married and Love the Real Estate
- Keith and Evan from the Bargain Block
- the Designer Formerly known as Christina El Moussa and someone named James
- Alison and Ty (Seriously though, the last time they were teamed up on a show Alison legit looked like she wanted to knock Ty out so LOL at HGTV for being messy with this)
- Brian and Mika from the 100 Day Dream Home
- Jasmine Roth and Antonia Lofaso (who apparently wandered in from the Food Network to get that HGTV money)
- Johnathan and Kristina from the Farmhouse
- Michel and Anthony (LOL at this but I like them and I can't WAIT to see them Barbie the hell out of their room).
This week, Egypt and Jasmine's teams are up. Egypt gets the foyer/sitting area and the 90s, while Jasmine gets the Kitchen/lounge area and the 60s. Out of the two, I think Jasmine had a harder time because the 1964 Barbie Dreamhouse was made out of cardboard but both teams were more than up for the job.
Seriously though; it's a fun, frothy watch. A+, will watch again next week.

Windy City Rehab - Season 3, Episode 8 - Building on Borrowed Time - July 18, 2023
Still massive supply delays??? This episode must have been filmed 2021 thru 2022 because it looks as if much of the supply chain in building materials has been resolved for 2023. Well, wood is still very expensive.
Anyone get the impression from Alison she thought some of the delays maybe the General Contractor's fault? I did.
First time ever on a final reveal in HGTV history the build it not complete. No cabinets in the kitchen or bathrooms.
I wonder what ever happened to the tenant on the first floor who was supposed to get the new basement?
Luv not everything was BLACK.
I did like the green of the built in cabinet they used in the new living room. The pier mirror and fireplace looked nice in the dark almost black brown.
Girls bathroom in the blues and teals was very nice.
The house cost $777,000.
The renovation budget was $750,000. Kinda gasped on that one and Alison did not blink an eye.
This is the last episode of Season 3. There will be a short 4 episode run of Alison building her dream home in Chicago.
The previews show Alison complaining about running out of money ... mmmm what about the build in Las Vegas, what about all those trips to Paris?

Christina on the Coast - wouldn't it have been a lot easier (and cheaper) to expand the existing bathroom where it was and bump the closet out where it was instead of swapping them? Eh, whatever. It ended up pretty nice, even though I don't like the black square tiles they chose. Christina also redid their little girl's room...the child said she loved purple and got a white and pale pink room.

Christina seems to be really great and a people person. As that is what you need to be in that job.

Barbie Dreamhouse:I admit I had my reservations at first, but this is a really delightful show. As I said, the usual suspects: - Egypt and Mike from We're Married and Love the Real Estate - Keith and Evan from the Bargain Block - the Designer Formerly known as Christina El Moussa and someone named James - Alison and Ty (Seriously though, the last time they were teamed up on a show Alison legit looked like she wanted to knock Ty out so LOL at HGTV for being messy with this) - Brian and Mika from the 100 Day Dream Home - Jasmine Roth and Antonia Lofaso (who apparently wandered in from the Food Network to get that HGTV money) - Johnathan and Kristina from the Farmhouse - Michel and Anthony (LOL at this but I like them and I can't WAIT to see them Barbie the hell out of their room). - I enjoyed it too! I just wish the intro and previews didn't show us all the finished work though. Hints would've been fine, but they sure gave a lot away. I love that they have to work in some "toyetic" feature: things that move, transform, flip, etc. Not sure about that "elevator" though, because it doesn't look very sturdy and I could see kids totally climbing in there! I'm glad they worked out the loud clicking lever though. They got knocked for the big blue empty section of their color blocked fireplace, but I didn't mind that part as much as I did that squiggly (Tennessee? Memphis? What did they call that pattern?) design on top. It looked hokey and hand done. But I loved their windows with the different silhouettes; they were apparently stained-glass looking, but the colors didn't come through as well on camera and they just looked frosted, but with the heads and the frames, it was really pretty. The staircase was fitting, and choosing a shiny lacquer seems like a good idea, since it made it look like plastic. I wonder if that means it's slippery? In the kitchen and family room, I loved the cream colored retro appliances, and even the cupboards. The backsplash was horrendous though, and one of the judges knocked it too for practability - whereas I mostly just thought it was ugly. Their pantry and the door to it was cool. Their toyetic appliance lifts were fun, especially the little switches on the wall that operated them. The couch was fun, how they wanted to copy the cardboard one that was in the old 60s Barbie House, but the curtains matched too well so it took away from the couch being as special. The room looked nice, though. I wish they'd had the TV tables for the other people sitting at the couch too, not just the two end people! Two people had to hold their TV dinners and it looked awkward. My mind kept wondering about how they did this: with each challenge taking a week, did more than one challenge occur at a time? You'd think it would sure take forever for all of them to get through this show, and with TV shows costs, I'd think they would be consolidate the work. There's also no way the planning and ordering of all the things happened in one week, so the teams had to have known which rooms and decades they had before they walked in and we see them pretend to find out. That fake part of the shows throws me off! lol
