What happened to Tarek's Flipping 101? I saw about three episodes and it disappeared from the schedule...

I checked Discover+ and not only did they take it off the "featured shows" selection (ie: the shows that pop up as a suggestion on the site) the last episode aired was 5/18. Hmmm.

But how did you feel about that bathroom, Bearcata ? If the bathroom is Alison's from Windy City Rehab, it is sublime. If it is Team Ty's bathroom from Battle on the Beach, it is vomit inducing.

Aw, what's not to like? The crooked tile, crappy grouting, Fred Flintstone sink with zero storage...

Aw, what's not to like? The crooked tile, crappy grouting, Fred Flintstone sink with zero storage... What is sad is that the floor tile is actually quite nice. I question the baby food colored grout color choice. While the judges praised this teams kitchen in episode one, the beige on beige on beige color palette is getting BORING. The team introducing Moroccan inspired elements with the shutters and wall decoration and using this type of handmade tile in the shower and the shape of the tile in the floor; so where are the vivid colors that with that Moroccan theme? It cannot be all sand. What is truly sad is that on the left side of the shower wall the tile is set correctly. What a waste of time and money. Shows incredibly poor project management and decision making.

I like the stone basin but I want some COLOR. Just having certain elements be either sea green, blue, or spice colors here and there would really elevate their looks. I like the mixture of textures and other things they have going on but their lack of color palette is really getting stale. There was no saving that tile job though; they just ran out of time and tried to rush and it really showed. Also, that space under the sink looks half-finished.
I also want to say that even though they ran out of time and were extremely stressed this team did NOT take it out on each other, which was nice to see.

Battle for the Beach - living room
I got the distinct impression from the judges that there were issues with all the properties and they had to pick one.
Note: Bryan complains about the view all the time. Seriously, if I am on the beach I do not have to look at it 24/7. I do not understand his obsession about the view. I get to the beach, haul my luggage to my room, collapse on the bed tired from the trip, unpack, and take a nap. I walk on the beach every morning and then do other activities. Sitting on the beach all day is not my idea of fun. Maybe take a quick swim, and walk in the evening and that is it. I personally do not like the crowds or noise, the heat, or the sand.
Team Ty - living room and powder room. Lots of beige. Poor quality of workmanship, lots of splinters. Liked the built in bench but it was too high. The overall space plan or finishes felt a bit sloppy.
Team Taniya - best comment was Bryan saying it was like waiting in the dentist's office for a root canal.
Team Alison - I liked it. There is some real communication issues on this team. In the evening it is nice to have a place to relax, drink, talk, play games. Bryan - but it does not have a view. Alison - it's dark outside. I do think she is going overboard with the green.
Next week - guest suite

Oh my goodness all of these people were kinda messy this week. Lots of pros and cons.
Team Ty: I liked a lot of this and it's on theme for them, but my kingdom for some color! I really loved that curvy bookshelf Ashley built, and the curved shape of the seating hutch was awesome. While I understand why they had to make the bench seat higher because of the issues with the outlets it was still kinda high; Ashley said she's around 5'10 and her legs were dangling, I'd hate to see kids and shorter guests on it, lol. And there was no reason for there to be splinters on the wooden areas of the bench; sandpaper that down! When they mentioned mirrors at first I shuddered, thinking about the old "creative mirror" walls of the 80s but the end result was updated and nice. A huge plus for them was the fact out of all of the houses this living room was the one that felt the most like you were at the beach and relaxing, you could imagine yourself with a good book and perhaps a cocktail, reading and listening to the seagulls.
Team Alison: Oh my goodness. Alison is there to help you get to the next level, she's not there to steer you wrong. I can't believe that guy went down to the beach and sulked because he felt like Alison "wasn't interested in collaboration" because she told him his paintings would not give the house value like a good set of built-ins would. Like, c'mon dude. Someone (probably a producer) obviously told Alison about this nonsense, so she had to go down to the beach and get him out of his fee-fees. Mess. I liked the greens, and was really glad that they finally listened to Alison and put built-ins between the mantel, and the green went well with the greens already established in the kitchen, but both Alison and the guys have a very "Midwestern" aesthetic that is a bit too "heavy" for a sunny beachside house. Their craftmanship was amazing, and if it had a lighter touch I believe they would have won.
Team Taniya: I tried to give Kelsey a chance, but oh man, the way she talks to her husband is terrible, and the more pressure they are under the worse she gets. Unlike Ashley and Steve, there is no joy in watching them work together and it's kinda hard to watch at times. While I liked their living room, a bench directly in front of a fireplace is just asking for it, and while the overall design was cute there was nothing outstanding about it and it came across as a bit sterile. Despite all of this, I'm hoping they eke out a win next week because she was absolutely crushed that they didn't win.

Ty's bathroom was seriously the worst room I have ever seen from these shows. It was truly atrocious. I hope they get a chance to redo this before the end of the show to fix that tile. I could do a better job! That said, they are my favourite team this season and I am rooting for them to win. I have to admit that I am not team Alison. There is something about her that I find incredibly grating, even though I like her designs. While I liked their kitchen, using that same Kermit green for the living room was too much. I thought they would pull some of the darker greens from their kitchen tile since they are usually not fans of matchy, matchy. I agree with Kao...that whole kitchen/LR was very heavy and not at all indicative of a beachy design. I wish they would give them a little more time to get stuff done and stop throwing stupid challenges at them.

Team Ty - nice room, the mirror wall wasn't as bad as I'd imagined (I was thinking cheesy 70's mirror wall). But it was still an ocean of beige - some seaglass blues or greens would be SO nice. I liked the bench but there was no excuse not to grab a power sander and smooth it out. Team Alison - imagine being paired with someone who loves and knows how to win, but not listening to her. The guy whimpering over his stupid artwork vs. built-ins, which would add actual value? I'm over him. And I'm tired of that particular green color. Team Taniya - Kelsey is awful. And she needs to learn how to use a tape measure, for crying out loud. The room was okay but a bench right up on the fireplace wasn't needed, they're not in Maine.

I had to laugh when Ashley said their design had a Moroccan vibe and Steve said "Moroccan? I thought we were doing Mediterranean. Make up your mind!" Their back and forth is fun; Kelsey and her husband are not. Didn't at one point she gave him attitude because she was putting in a beam and it was oh so heavy for her to hold, but somehow he was holding it wrong? It would be different if he was snapping at her back but he's pretty much quiet, which makes it worse. She seemed better last week so I thought that maybe it was nerves and stress but no, she's terrible.

Yeah, the beam was too heavy and sanding the wood around the fireplace was just too much for her. Girl, you're only 20-something, quit being so pathetic.
Her husband won't put up with that mess for long unless he enjoys being a doormat.

I get the distinct impression that he's "walking on eggshells" with her, and that's no way to have a marriage. Get some help for your issues, or go to marriage counseling because if she's behaving like this in public it's probably worse in private.

Windy City Rehab Season 4 Episode 5 - A Tale of Two Houses - June 20, 2023
Nice to see Alison work on two projects.
Oak Park Home - running joke was that both her clients were so tall.
I think Alison must have luv'ed these folks as clients as they were both so in sync with her black and white color palette.
I was surprised at Alison painting the front porch ceiling black but it worked.
The house has huge spaces and the lines were kept clean and simple, almost too minimal. I felt their was a lack of texture and color as the sofas were grey or soft white and no patterns on the pillows.
Did like the drama of the green living room to the painted mural dining room walls to the white sun room to the huge black and white kitchen.
Ugly Mansion - that house has some bones on it. Too bad the developers couldn't seem to get a move on with their crews and permits.
Glad to see Alison listen to her gut and say goodbye. It was interesting to see that they had billable hours for the project. I wonder if they got paid or just had to cut their losses.
Note: I wondered why this season would be only 8 episodes long with at least one episode devoted to her new Las Vegas house. There will be a second 3 episode Alison special with her building a new home for herself in Chicago. Alison is also co-hosting Battle for the Beach at the same time as Windy City Rehab is being aired. That is lot of Alison.

Windy City Rehab - I wasn't in love with the black and white palette, but the homeowners sure liked it. Did they show a bathroom? I don't remember seeing one. And I'm not a mural person in general, but what that guy painted was just gorgeous! I wish those dummies in the other house had their stuff together, I would have liked to see it completed. That was once a beautiful old home. I saw an ad for a new season of Christina on the Coast coming up soon (yay?)...still crickets with Flipping 101. I can't find a single thing about what happened to that show. Did Tarek takes his toys and go home after all the bad reviews of The Flipping El Moussas?

Windy City Rehab:
We are still in Oak Park this week, which is nice. I’ve been in these type of buildings in Oak Park and trust me, those ceilings are 9 to ten feet tall, so plenty of room for the couple (I had to laugh at Alison wearing 4 inch heels and still looking like Tiny Tim compared to those two). I love all the Arts and Crafts/Franklin Lloyd Wright features in the house including the windows and the bar hutches. LuvLuv that mural and everything else she put in. Alison managed to make a black and white theme be somewhat homey, which was kinda weird, but nice. The Monroe building….very run down, but the bones are still a looker. This area is west of the West Loop that unfortunately is going thru a nasty form of gentrification as the City opted to double the property taxes in “certain neighborhoods” (generally low-income areas adjacent to higher income areas that people can’t afford), this being one of them. There’s beautiful housing stock to be had in that neighborhood in everything from townhomes dating to the early 1900s, greystones, brownstones, and “mini mansions” with servant quarters in the back (carriage houses). It was a thing of beauty, but so many red flags, and I understand why she passed on this. * NOTE: the following is pure conjecture on my part but knowing what I know about this area and the BS that happens in Chicago I’m willing to bet this is what happened but they can’t legally say this on TV, sooo…* The first clue was when Alison kept calling about the permits and being told that “they were in the works.” Now, that’s not to say that Chicago isn’t slow when it comes to getting work permits for projects (and many a developer “greases the app with some green” to get a permit quicker, but we won’t talk about that ) but there’s slow, and there’s this. Anyone with experience dealing with City Hall would be like “Hmmm…” The second was all the debris/garbage in the yard, which in my experience screams of “I really don’t care about this property or this community” because trust me, if this was a community like Lincoln Park or Gold Coast that debris would NOT be there, and it was there for a long time. The third was the fact that they wanted to make it a “rental,” yet unlike most developers here (who would make this mansion 3 floor thru apartments to maximize profit) according to the house plans it was 6 bedrooms and only one kitchen? This smells of a property being developed into an AirBnb, and they are extremely unpopular here precisely because developers target “up and coming” areas and buy a lot of properties at highly inflated prices, causing a lot of long-time homeowners to sell the houses they’ve lived in for decades because they can no longer afford the property taxes. The Monroe Street property is in extremely close proximity to United Center (home of the Chicago Bulls, The Chicago Blackhawks, and a very popular concert venue) and it will be beautiful when finished but Alison is purely a “I wanna make beautiful homes for people to actually live in” person, not AirBnb. Now the developers creating AirBnb housing know it’s unpopular here so they tend to not shout about it (and it's also a gray area in Chicago legally), so I can see Alison not knowing at first, then doing further research and choosing to kill the job.

Battle for the Beach -Guest Room - June 25, 2023
Team Taniya - mental breakdown, high maintenance wife, potential divorce, they won. The one room was tiny. Only two bathrooms in the house? with potentially seven guests sharing one bathroom?
Team Ty - the guest room was not finished and horribly styled. A mess. Great if you are a swinger or pansexual. At least the bathroom was finished and tiled properly. The closet???? Totally STUPID.
Team Allison - they thought shark themed bedding would win? Liked the magnetic game boards on the wall. Seriously they needed double bunks beds if possible or at least a trundle. Needed more activities. Nice bathroom. What is the designer's problem?

It is borderline embarrassing watching these people, is this the best HGTV casting can do? Alison's emotional needy designer and Taniya's high maintenance wife can go. I really appreciated Scott McGilvery's Vacation Home Rules even more. I do think the building codes are a bit different in Canada than that US as Scott uses a lot of non built in closet systems in the cottages he renovates. I wonder why they can't do that in what are considered vacation rentals?

BoB -
Team Taniya - you can just tell the husband is over the nonsense. That girl needs to find another line of work, she's not cut out for flipping. They won because the other two rooms sucked so much.
Team Ty - did they even show that ridiculous broom "closet" to the judges. The beds were a big no. Headboards were pretty, and hey, they used some color in the bathroom!
Team Alison - her face when she was talking about the shark bedding cracked me up. Whiny artist guy couldn't match the paint color in the challenge? They didn't do enough in this room...nice bath, though.

Battle for the Beach: All I have to say is goodness. While the winning design was good, it was more because of a somewhat flaw that would effect the bottom line in the other units as opposed to it being the best.
Team Ty: Is Ty insane? “Oh, we can put bunk beds in here, but also a Queen bed?” What? This team is like Opposite land because the other week they gave us a decent main bedroom with a raggedy bathroom, and this week they gave us a decent bathroom and a raggedy bedroom (with the exception of that wonderful headboard). They would have been so much better served not having the little closet and having something freeform in the room itself for storage. It’s not the main bedroom, it would have been okay. Besides swingers and poly people I can also see their big bed appealing to families who group sleep due to economical/space available/cultural reasons, so unexpected bonus along with ACTUAL COLOR IN THE BATHROOM ,WHAT!?
Team Alison: This guy…man. Save it for a close friend or someone you pay to listen to you bitch. Their room was a room designed with only children in mind, so I found the sharks kinda fun and whimsical. The bathroom was fantastic and carried the shark theme over; if I was a young kid I would be thrilled with all of this. Their attention to detail is fantastic; the finishings and tile was fantastic. The bad thing is it’s an obviously designed kid’s room, which would limit who you could market/rent this to.
Team Taniya: I’m going to be extremely kind and say that there might be some issues at play here other than “the wife is a nasty wench.” Panic attacks are awful to deal with, and shame on HGTV for showing her meltdown. I hope that if she isn’t currently under care now that she watches these episodes and decides to look into it, because she doesn’t handle stress well at all, and it does not excuse how she treats her husband either. With that said, while I liked the fact that there was a clean division between a “kids” space and a “adult” space I hated the fact that both spaces were so small. Also, there is a lack of bathrooms in this space in comparison to bedroom spaces, which could create a problem.

Team Alison and Team Ty did add powder rooms. Does each bedroom really need a bathroom? The homes were not really built for that.
A couple of summers ago I went to Oak Island North Carolina with family and friends. We rented a cottage on the beach and it was older but had been updated and very nicely. There were two bedrooms downstairs, one with a queen and one small room with double bunk beds that barely fit into the room and a smallish bathroom. Upstairs were another 3 bedrooms and a bathroom. Those two bathrooms served their purpose as did the bedrooms. I don't think we watched TV or played board games the entire time we were there. The teens were on the beach or sleeping or eating. The adults mainly hung out. No one really used the kitchen as we went out to eat. This idea of the kid's bedroom being a play room maybe exaggerated.
I do think that having a projector, and outdoor board games available outside in the evening makes sense, and an area on the deck if it is wide enough or under the deck if possible.

I agree, Bearcata. My partner's sister and BIL have a cabin by a lake that's an older, 70s relic 3 bd/1 bath. It's homespun, but the appeal is in the big front yard, bbq pit, assorted seating areas and stone pathway to the lake. They don't spend a lot of time inside; everyone is either out on the boat, in the yard relaxing, talking, and eating, or on the beach and a lot of their neighbors are the same. While there's a lot of modest properties like theirs there's also McVilla vacation homes with boat slips and everything in between nearby, so it's hard to say. Judging by some of the nearby properties there's a lot of folks who have a lakehouse just to say they have one and they stay inside all day and don't talk to the "summer people." I think next week's episode is going to be the game changer because we're dealing with exterior and we will see who takes full advantage of the surroundings (view, proximity to the beach, etc)

Windy City Rehab - An Expensive Exit - June 27, 2023
A couple on maternity leave asks Alison to help finish the renovation they started on their home. It is the top two floors and must be done in 4 months. The trouble with the timeline is I certainly hope they have an architect, building permits, and supplies already lined up and ready to go. I am seeing permits not being pulled, windows not being ordered, no work done.
Why is there not bathroom on the second floor, but there is a bedroom?
Can someone explain the egress needed from the second floor? That made no sense as it is a single family home.

Windy City Rehab - I'm sure it was required by some kind of city code, but wow those egress stairs were ugly. Alison sure wasn't happy about it blocking the windows/view.
It took them forever with the permit nonsense and supply issues but the house ended up lovely. I've never heard of a Moroccan-MCM theme, but it worked!

Windy City Rehab: Lakeview is a super cute area! Back in the day it was extremely alternative and attracted a lot people who were punk/artist/new wave/hiphop/gay/alternative lifestyle/creative who wanted to be close to the restaurants, nightlife, and small shops but wanted a house/more space. Lots of trees, houses, two and three flats, and has tons of things to do. I was curious about the egress issue so I tried to find more information. Due to some really tragic incidents with fires City ordinance declares that every condo unit in the city have both an entrance and exit to the unit, or an exit per floor for apartment buildings to the ground floor. What those exits look like depends on the type of building; older buildings tend to have external fire escapes, while in the newer buildings/conversions every unit has a balcony that in case of fire can easily be accessed by the Fire Department. It’s the reason why a lot of buildings in the South Loop, River West, and other areas where there’s a lot of “warehouse conversions into living spaces have exteriors that look like this:
Looking at this clients house there was already an egress (the balcony on the third floor) which should have sufficed and was curious as to why another egress was needed. I did some digging around the City of Chicago’s Department of Buildings site and found this information, which basically breaks it down (if you're bored and want to read about this in its entirety it's at: www.chicago.gov/content/dam/city/depts/bldgs/general/Self_Cert_Program/CodesUpdate/SelfCertOneDayAM2.pdf).
I believe this couple purchased what was once a three flat and were converting it to a single family home. I’m guessing that either the total amount of house exceeded 4000sqf, or the Occupant load was exceeded, which would mean two exits. It’s something they should have been aware of even before they bought the house, but hindsight is 20/20, every States rules are different, and it’s entirely possible they weren’t made aware of it until their architect/main contractor told them it would be needed AFTER they bought the house and were in the renovation stage.
I need to check out the Modern Hill warehouse because I like MCM/Space Age Plastic era furniture and I covet that room divider! Also LuvLuv that little window they illuminated and put in the bathroom. The end result in the living room was so clean and pleasing, and gave mid century modern with some funk! That bathroom…Alison knows her kitchens and she knows her bathrooms, and all the Morroccan features in the bathroom was fabulous. I also loved the built in bookshelves in the stairwell leading up to the third floor.
