You did well Fanny, I had no clue. Haven't read the book, but I would have Petranella pretend the baby is her's which would help make claims against her husband seem false.
I have no clue what they will do about the sugar. Why in the heck can't they sell it????

I am loving the Miniaturist! I almost picked up the book beforehand, but I'm glad to be shocked by the show! I wish this was like 8 episodes long and a yearly series!
Johannes is refusing to sell the sugar (while pretending that he is searching for the right buyer) so that the couple that owns it can not become rich because that will then add to their power over him.
I thought the baby was on purpose too; for Nella to pretend that it's hers- Corneila seemed to know; when Marin was doubled over at some point she asked if she was okay and it just seemed like she was in the know.
I want to like Johannes, but he sort of freaks me out. I don't know if his fondness for Nella is real or just pretend. I had the idea that the Miniaturist was a cast off lover/ or used beard trying to warn Nella of him and Marin, like she is in danger with them.

I realized afterward that Petr onella (Nella) is spelled with an o not an a. Anyway, I guess the selling of sugar is not that important in the context of the story...because I did discover that thanks to the Calvinist burgomasters, the people of Amsterdam eat their sugar in secret. Which makes it more understandable why they have trouble selling it.

Well, I sure didn't see a lot of that coming! Well done! The Miniaturist was both observant and intuitive. But, the people just wouldn't leave her alone, & hounded her until she had to leave. Marin loved Otto! Duh, why did I not catch that......she didn't want to kill her child until after Otto left. I bet she thought she had it all, running the house and enjoying Otto. Perhaps that was why she asked her brother to refuse what's-his-name? Or, maybe that happened afterward. There are a lot of questions that still keep popping up, so if anyone read the book and can explain, I would appreciate it! Did the book end and that same place, I wonder? I loved Nella for the strong, compassionate women she was, and for how she was able to keep her head under pressure, and make right decisions. I hated watching that tragic ending for her husband, but what great love she showed him staying there until the end.

I was disappointed with the ending of the miniaturist.I enjoyed it, but I wanted something super creepy and supernatural involving the Miniaturist. Was she supposed to be an albino?

It might not have been romantic love, but they had a true partnership. And oh I cried when he died!! But at least it ended with Nella young enough to find a marriage with a man who loves her in every way - if that is what she chooses. I think in those times, if she had been in a "traditional" marriage, Nella would not have come in to her own and realized how strong and capable she is. I didn't suspect the baby was going to be Otto's until Marin gave birth. It was the look on Cornelia's face. And it definitely surprised me - I got the feeling Cornelia was the one who like Otto! But I'm going to assume they raise Thea together as a family. Because that's what I want to assume

Watched the premiere of Poldark, but I'm not sure how I feel about it. I mean, I was never able to fully believe that both Drake and Sam would be executed. It just seemed like too big a leap since they were such major characters. Yes, I know Francis died unexpectedly. However, when you think about it, there was no real place to go with his character. While his death was tragic, it was also plausible within the story. I just didn't feel that with Drake and Sam.
As for Ross and Demelza, where are we going with this? So we get to look forward an exciting....electoral battle? And since Hugh is dying, anyway, what more is there to say about his affair with Demelza? Even if Ross finds out that Hugh is still writing poems to Demelza, what does it matter? I can't believe Ross would be jealous of Hugh, anymore.

12 books means a lot of moments when Love triumphs and Love is lost; Joy and Sadness, Death and Life. I try to stay a little aloof, because it is to easy to become attached to these characters, and then have to watch them die. I have not read the books, have been told (and hope this is true) that the last book has a good ending. I will be horribly disappointed if that is not the case.

Morwenna's husband is so gross. I can hardly stand to see him in scenes. Did the blond girl really sleep with George's hired thug? I missed the scene where she talks with Sam; I couldn't catch what she told him other than she is leaving to be a lady's maid . Demelza and Ross are starting to exhaust me with their relationship.

I've read all the books. Do you want me to spoil the ending for you?
This season has been disappointing so far. The whole "Drake and Sam almost get executed" plot was not in the books. I don't a little artistic license here and there, but it's like one commenter said over at Vulture. If you're going to invent a plot of whole cloth, couldn't it at least be original? This was nothing more than a reworked version of "Drake gets accused of stealing and almost executed" plot.
For those who havent read the books but would like to: Sam has a chance to win the final wrestling bout, but deliberately throws the match. He decides that he wants the blonde girl to attend chapel out of her own volition, not because of some stupid bet. It really gave some depth to his character. And the blonde girl does attend chapel for a while. There was a real flirtation between her and Sam. In the end, though, she wrote him a letter breaking it off. She told him that she would never be accepted by his Methodist friends and she didn't to lower his reputation in their eyes since his religion meant so much to him. she urged him to marry a good Methodist girl and forget about her, but Sam took it hard. It was a very poignant scene and really added depth to both of their characters.
On a positive note, I absolutely love Rowella. It's probably not politically correct to say so, but she's my favorite character. After all the sighing and crying and earnest conversations, that scene at the end between her and Oswald was just hilarious. I love how she doesn't just sit around moaning about her fate but took control of her life and did something about it. I may not approve of how she did it, but again, it's refreshing.

That look on Oswald's face when she told him she wasn't really pregnant after all was probably my favorite on the show so far. I guess I like this little plot because in a way it's the only one where the partners are equal. Demelza hangs around Nampara while Ross has his adventures. Ditto George and Elizabeth. Caroline sat around while Dwight languished in France and then back home. Morwenna may have one-upped Oswald, but she's still trapped in marriage to him. The Rowella/Oswald plot is the only one where the woman has gotten what she wanted and enjoyed it.

Poldark only has one season left, according to Vulture.
That's a real shame. In the books, it transitions to the next generation of Jeremy, Clowance, and Geoffrey Charles. Trust me, there's still plenty of drama, romance, and tragedy left in this saga. The Napoleonic War heats up, and one of the boys heads off to fight in it. I highly recommend the books if anyone has loved this TV show.
Speaking of tragedy, even though I knew it was coming, I still cried when Dwight and Caroline's baby died.
I have to confess, I'm rather tired of Ross and Demelza's story. It just seems to consist of endless disagreements and trouble at the mine. I find the other plots far more interesting. In fact, I can recall the other plots from the books, but I've been racking my brains trying to remember what happens to our two main characters.
I'm going to modify my old post. Dwight and Caroline are now my favorite characters, followed closely by Rowella. The latter is going to have a new house by the time she's finished with Ossie.

Agree completely, which is a shame; because I was so hopeful Ross and Demelza would win my heart as a great love!

Winston Graham once called his Poldark books "an unromantic romance." How true!
