There was definitely something off about episode 4. Awesome/hilarious musical numbers, and the usual incredible production values, but... WTF was up with Midge? She's turning into this totally unsympathetic character. The way she handled the second show of the expo left me bewildered. So... she's unprofessional and selfish, but hey that's funny right?
With all this money being spent, I wish the story was better.

Watching that episode, I was trying to place myself in Midge's shoes, (struggling and failing); while still balancing that with what we know about the future Midge. It's like she wants this so bad, more than anything, that she is either going to do whatever she wants, or throw in the towel. She goes from anger (because no one who works on the show, can ever be on it as a guest) to indifferent, listlessness, back to anger. Is this a mental breakdown for Midge? Her breaking point?
We know in fast forward that she becomes famous, full of herself......but, will she ever realize that it comes at a huge cost? Or, will we end up hating her? So, I'm guessing this is the beginning of that end for Midge. It looks like she will ruthlessly cut out everyone who cares about her. I hope she eventually experiences regret over what she has lost for the sake of fame, by the final episode.
Yes, FannyMare, I agree this last season is not as funny as past, especially episode 4. There is more of a serious, sad, tone to it. I'm going to trust that the writers know where they are heading with all this. Trusting that the final episode will be full of fun and laughter, and not just regretful reconciliation, and closure.

So we have only seen 2 epi's of which I already posted that we were underwhelmed......now reading here appears as the epi's go on they don't get much better. I absolutely LOVED S1-4 ....LOVED them all. Was sad every time the Season would end. Waited so long for S5 and was hoping S5 would get better and better right up to the last episode.

I haven't lost faith yet momrek! Still hoping it picks up soon. I think we have 6 more episodes left. But, I'm re-watching epi 4, and realize I missed an important scene in the beginning, duh! When I watch shows, I am often doing other things (multitasking); anyway, I do miss key moments sometimes. Like the scene when mob minions get Susie to make Midge do the Expo show, under the threat of letting "the Boss" know Susie is not co-operating. It's a familiar story, Mob sponsors an entertainer, and they will make you famous, but, at what cost? The future split between Susie and Midge makes sense now. Midge won't like being sold off to the Mob.
I have no clue how they will turn this around to leave us feeling satisfied in the end, but with such talented writing, and production for 4 seasons, I trust (hope) they will.

Mikesgirl .... I am so hoping with fingers crossed that with those 6 more episodes left the Series will end with us being thrilled. Sunday night we watched 3 and 4 .... as MFWalkoff posted something was definitely off. And as FannyMare posted this season is not as funny as S1-S4. E4 was especially confusing. And I do not like this " mob" nonsense. Everyone yelling at everyone. And Midge

We enjoyed episodes 5. Loved Susie in her boxer shorts. We're wondering why Joel is in jail..

He said it was because he wanted to protect Midge. But, we don’t know why she needed to be protected. He took the blame for something, or stepped in to protect her from the muscle guys? So wow what a surprise. Joel in jail , and suddenly, Midge is no longer famous and selling wigs……or was that flash forward prior to when she becomes a star? Joel has more grey hair, so I thought it must be after she is a celebrity but I’m confused until more info is disclosed. But, it’s clear Midge didn’t want to hear Susie’s name even mentioned. I love Joel’s mother, under the wedding dress, during the ceremony stitching the rip, just as the minister pronounced their nanny married. The panic that ensued was funny. Mob involvement is clear. Joel referenced overhearing the argument between Susie and mob goons/enforcers….but, it’s all clear as mud to me.

Remember when Midge was being interviewed and she was explaining her wardrobe items, what she wore and when? ….was that for an auction?
I just remembered, Joel wanted early pictures of Midge (from her USO days), so his jail time must be coinciding with her now going through tough times. Selling or auctioning her wardrobes and the selling wigs instead of making appearances on the road, must reflect a ‘fall from grace’ for Midge.

Joel is in jail when the kids are grown, since Midge shows him the photo of their son in the kibbutz (where Midge landed in a helicopter a couple episodes ago). And he's in a minimum-security prison that seemed kind of loose, and from what he said I don't think it's a long sentence.
This ep was interesting, but it was kind of a mixed-bag. It seemed like it was mostly just to set up things that will happen in the rest of the season. So a bunch of semi-connected things happened, and then suddenly it's over.
The boat gig and the piracy was...bizarre? And then it was laughed off by everyone afterward? Were the charges dropped? And I really don't know where they're going with the Midge/Gordon flirtation. It looks like it's going to amount to nothing, but who knows...

The flashbacks are confusing. I agree, it’s a bit messed up. You phrased it well, MFW, a series of semi-connected events and then at the end it will all suddenly make sense. We know she has multiple husbands, but, there she is at the end visiting Joel in jail….do we assume that she is single at that point? I guess we are meant to believe that through life’s ups and downs, they will always be there for each other. Demonstrating that they still care about each other. But, I find it disappointing that neither of them developed a healthy relationship through the years. Their relationship is certainly dysfunctional. In jail Joel tells Midge to tell their grandchild he will see her in what, 6 months? So, Will the next episode be Joel released from jail? Does all of this eventually lead to them ending up together? I don’t know whether to feel disappointed or encouraged. It’s bizarre.

Agree with both of you, MFWalkoff and Mikesgirl . Yes this has been an overall bizarre season. Wondering what Joel did? I also wonder if something will happen with Gordon and Midge?

Well, episode 6 was interesting! We find out how Joel ended up in jail, how Midge and Suzy split, and that Midge was, at one point able to admit that she was still in love with Joel.
The Roast for Suzy was funny, some raw humor, but that's what those Roasts were back then. In the beginning of the episode, I saw a very cynical Suzy, self promoting, an excellent BS'er. But hearing multiple stories, told via "the rumor mill" was intriguing. You still have to piece some things together. But, I especially enjoyed Midge filming her special message for Suzy. A touching piece offering from an older, wiser adult. A clearly emotionally touched Suzy. I'm looking forward to episode 7 now.

I agree FannyMare! I never understood why someone would be mean and rude to someone under the guise of Roasting. It’s a personal belittling of another person.

Another episode with more questions than answers.....well, I guess we have some answers, and then more questions. Who ever heard of a family who doesn't know how to answer the phone, let alone light a gas stove when the pilot light has gone out? Why in the heck do we have a sitcom with Hank Azaria featured at the end? Does he marry her? Give her the "big break". Maybe it just shows us his poaching attempt was legit? WE are down to only 2 remaining episodes. I almost wish I had waited until the entire season had been released, so I could binge stream it. Perhaps the continuity would be better?
This season is not going out with a big bang. (But, at least I have the complete set of Schitt's Creek to always keep me amused. )

The fictional sitcom with Hank Azaria and Sutton Foster was the show that Danny offered Midge the writing job for at Toots Shors. There was a short clip of it at the beginning, and then a longer scene at the end under the famously looooong closing credits.
Yeah, they are all over the place jumping back and forth through time. They want to tell us Midge's whole life story in a handful of episodes. Some of it isn't really crucial, like most of Rose's story this episode, also the silly B-story about Weissman kids being geniuses.
I just want to see Midge make it as an entertainer. They can make TV movies later for all the other future stuff.

I thought that is EXACTLY what Mrs. Maisel was going to be about WITH some thrown in family storylines. But as the seasons went on and on it when off into the direction of MORE family storylines and less of Midge doing her Stand Up's. I totally agree with both of you Mikesgirl and MFWalkoff .... this final season is so hard to follow.

I’m still going to miss Midge when this is over. And, I will rewatch the entire last season binge style, to see if the flow is easier the second time.
But, I don’t care for the unrelated material. Maybe it’s for our amusement, perhaps it will all come together in the end? Maybe, it’s just filler for each episode, so they could get 9 episodes instead of 6 or 7? But, they still failed in the ‘best series final season’ in my book.

I was sort of behind on watching - still hadn't seen season 4 - but I'm finally almost caught up. I'm going to hold out on the next few episodes so I can binge them all together. The flash forwards have been a little jarring and sad for me, but I'm hoping they are satisfying in the end.
Funny though, I was watching this and then switched over to re-watch Walking Dead (yes, again It's like my comfort show). I was in the thick of season 2, with the farm and Randall being held prisoner in the barn and I went "OMG! It's Joel!" Totally didn't connect that it was the same actor playing Randall until right then. How I can like one character so much and just want to smack the other one is a credit to him. Luckily, I think that's how we're supposed to feel about each character

Luckily, I think that's how we're supposed to feel about each character I get that way when I watch the film Brooklyn with Saoirse Ronan (it's my comfort movie). I see Tony's family at the dinner table and point and shout "That's Joel!"
The latest episode was interesting. I liked Susie finally facing Hedy, it was a nice twist toward getting Midge to perform on Gordon's show. I love Nina Arianda (Hedy) as an actress -- she was incredible as Vivian Vance in Being the Ricardos.
Tony Shaloub's monologue about how Abe never appreciated or encouraged Midge... heartbreaking. He's so great.
So Gordon was about to tell Midge she can be on the show, when she got an emergency phone call and ran out. Hmm... sad episode next week?

Notable Moments: Seeing the 1965 flash with Lenny Bruce (Sad outcome for a character I was fond of, almost as much as Joel.)
Watching Midge check with Susie first to get the "tits up", as she was about to take control of her destiny and seize the moment, was satisfying. (She did it, she deserved it and earned it!)
Susie, awww.....having one warm hat, (furry, ear flaps), describing the first love of her life. Made me want to
2005 Midge eating dinner alone, amidst the luxury, tenderly touch and adjust the photo of young Joel and Midge - lovely. (Leaves questions unanswered maybe, or better left to my imagination.)
But, knowing that aged Midge and Suzie still got together to watch Jeopardy in synchrony, sparring and laughing together..... is a fond tribute to a loving and meaningful partnership.
It wasn't the fireworks ending I was expecting, but it was meaningful. So long Midge!

I also didn't know what to expect from the finale, since the season spent so much time jumping back and forth in time. But I think it was good that they focused on the supposed moment that Midge hit the big time. That moment pivots all the past and 'future' scenes we were shown. Same with the final scene with older Midge/Susie. These scenes provided bookends to the rest of the season, which was basically presented in shuffle mode.
I'm really going to miss this show. The care and expense that went into every episode was astounding.
I haven't gone back much to watch past seasons, but now I'm kind of fired up to do just that.

The closer we got to the finale, the more dread I felt about Lenny. I was sure they'd cover his death. Getting to know him, so-to-speak, made his decline and death IRL even sadder. Luke Kirby was excellent in that role.
I waited until the last four episodes were all released and I watched them all in a row. I'll really miss this show. MFWalkoff - I had the same thought about re-watching the whole series. It really was so special.
I loved seeing some of the "Sherman-Palladino players" this season, including Kelly Bishop, Sean Gunn and Sutton Foster.
Those final moments with Miriam and Susie were perfect. I love that, although there were men on the show, the heart of the show was the relationship between those two very different women.

In several episodes, I would mentally do a Gilmore Girls cast head count. I had read at some point that Lauren Graham was supposed to have had some sort of role in the show. Don't know whatever happened to that
