The good liar. I adore Helen Mirren, and she did not disappoint. The movie did, but she didn't..

I watched Reality Bites. Ever since Beetlejuice I have had a soft spot for Winona Ryder & she & Ethan Hawke were both really good in this movie. Ben Stiller was even watchable, I usually bypass anything with his name attached.
On DirecTv this weekend we are getting 60 channels of movies for a trial. HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, Epix & The Movie Channel, all for 5 days. I set the dvr to record about 30 movies over that time.

Ford vs Ferrari. I expected it to do well since the first trailer. It has Matt Damon and Christian Bale in top form. Fast cars. And the story is well told and gripping. You dont need to be a gearhead to enjoy this, the racing scenes are a must on a big screen

The Christmas Movie marathon has started on the ION Network today. I believe it's only on Sundays, at least at this point. I loved this last year, and have had it on since 10:00 this morning. It's now almost 2:30. So far they are ones from last Christmas time, but I've enjoyed refreshing myself in the stories. I hope there's a few new ones, or at least ones I haven't seen, but even if not, these movies really get me in the mood for all Christmas stuff.
These movies are extremely predictable & the storylines mostly seem to be similar: Girl meets guy, usually a "cute meet"; They are attracted to each other; Problems & misunderstandings ensue; They overcome them; They get together in the end. Nowadays the women aren't nearly as helpless, needy, desperate, or need saving as the old ones. Most of these women are independent career women with brains & education & good jobs. Many aren't looking for a man. But love always finds them.
I know, these movies are corny, unoriginal, unrealistic, etc., but I still love them. A little brainless fantasy at Christmas can be fun. However, 1 month of weekly marathons is enough sugar shock for me. By Christmas I'm ready for them to be over. But for now, I'm excited the Sunday marathons are back.

Yeah, I turned on ION for my usual Sunday NCIS: LA marathon and found Christmas feel good movies. Maybe next Sunday I'll commit to a full day and evening of watching.

We watched "Zodiac" on Netflix last night. We saw it in the theater when it first came out, but had forgotten most of it. But it had Jake Gyllenhal, Robert Downey, Jr., and Mark Ruffalo . . . so we decided to give it a shot.
It totally held our interest, although it's a VERY long movie with no car chase scenes, superheros, etc. (Well, it did have Tony Stark and the Incredible Hulk, but I don't think they count as that in this movie.)

Watched "The Irishman" on Netflix last night. Stellar cast but at 3 1/2 hours, I felt it was way too long. Perhaps my interest would not have waned as much as it did if we began watching earlier but we started right after 10 p.m.

I'm not sure how many remakes of movies are needed, but the new Black Christmas was the worst one.

The art of racing in the rain.
This movie was one of the most beautifully crafted movies I have ever seen in awhile. The fact that Enzo ( a beautiful labrador retriever) is the one that narrates most of the movie , is what makes it special. We see life in a different perspective, the story from a dog if you will. ..If you’re a dog person, you will love this movie. It has its ups and downs, as with any other movie, but this movie very much depicts a lot of real situations that go on in our lives that we don't see enough of in other movies.. I rate this 10/10, and two boxes of Kleenex. I never thought I'd sob as much as I did(, we did,) but it really touches your heart.

Molly's Game. The true story of US Ski team member Molly Bloom & her post skiing career. She ran high stakes poker games until the FBI stepped in. It is really a great movie. Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba & Kevin Costner all are really good. I highly recommend this movie if you get a chance.
It was also the directorial debut of Aaron Sorkin.

Yesterday..( finally)
A charming romcom with a twist. Love the twist. Original, fresh, quirky yet likeable characters. We watched the deleted scenes and alternate ending; as well, extra songs performed by Himesh Patel...it's amazing, just how many songs the Beatles wrote.

I have the Criterion Channel so I've been on a foreign film kick. I watched Catherine Breillat's Fat Girl and Peter Greenaway's The Pillow Book (a movie with Ewan McGregor I saw ages ago in a theater and loved). It's not Filmstruck, but the Criterion Channel is still pretty good.

I haven't been to a movie theater in 6 years. I wanted to see Knives Out yesterday and indulge in popcorn. In checking online it was almost sold out for the time slot I had in mind. I knew you could buy tickets on line, but local theaters appear now to all be assigned seating! Is this what is really going on? I'm short. I rely on arriving early and getting an aisle seat, or at least making sure I'm not sitting behind anyone tall. This may not be possible any more.

Landmark theater seats are designed to make everyone comfy, wide seats that recline etc

Getting an aisle seat is even easier with assigned seating. I like to have an aisle seat in the last row because I hate having people sit behind me, and buying tickets online works out really well.

I'm not seeing any aisles on the schematics, and the number of seats appears much smaller than I remember. I wonder if they are only showing the middle seats. Maybe the side seats, which is what I would want, are still available. Phooey, I'll wait until I can borrow it for free from my library.
