We've been picking out movies on our streaming services to watch on Friday nights. Last night we watched "Thirteen Lives."
There are no words to describe how excellent this movie was. Ron Howard is an amazing director. Although a lot of it is done with captioning, it is used in such a way that it helps you realize the challenges that the English-speaking experts faced when working under extreme pressure to save lives in a remote part of a foreign country.
And I never realized before how much Viggo Mortensen and Ed Harris look alike.

Was there a re-created documentary or real time filming of the rescue as it happened? I saw that and was amazed. I don't know if I'll watch this film for awhile because I remember the second hand claustrophobia I had with the other.

I understand when they have to abbreviate for time but I don't like when it bears little resemblance to the actual events.

I understand when they have to abbreviate for time but I don't like when it bears little resemblance to the actual events. The movie is about 2.5 hours long. I was surprised that the portion about the kids and their coach going into the cave and the rain stranding them only took about 15 minutes ago. Pretty much all the rest of the time was involved with the rescue (assembling experts, etc.) . . . and a brief amount of time spent on the winding up at the end.

I watched all three of the Tom Holland-led Spiderman movies. When I did a whole in-order watch of the Marvel movies, the Spiderman movies weren't available on any of the streaming platforms I had. I got 6 months of Starz for $20 a while back and the 6 months is almost up, so I'm watching as much as I can before I cancel. I just happened to see that the Spiderman movies were available on Starz. I enjoyed the movies, but they're definitely not my favorite of the Marvel universe.

I bought all three on digital and placed them in My Movies.
I think what I liked best about them was the Favreau involvement.

I just got back from vacation. I got to spend a lot of hours flying & watching movies. I always like that. It passes the time & I get to see movies that always seemed interesting, if not enough to bother going to the theater for them. This time I watched: House of Gucci:This was good, but not fantastic. Lady Gaga was good, but not fantastic. Definitely worth watching though. Father Stu: I enjoyed this one a lot. It was slow moving, but very good. I expected a bit more, but was still satisfied with the movie. The real Father Stu was a really inspiring man. Mark Walberg was very good, but Mel Gibson was great. Out of all the characters, he was very believable in this part. As libgirl2 said, it reminded us what a good actor he is. Sad ending, but expected & inspiring. Also well worth watching The Eyes of Tammy Faye: I wasn't expecting much, but really enjoyed this one. Like everyone else, I know the Jim & Tammy Faye disaster. I didn't realize though, that the huge fraud/embezzelment/scamming was from Jim, not Tammy Faye. She was a genuinely religious woman who was just along for the ride, and was treated horribly. I came to like her & sympathize with her a lot by the end of it. It also showed just how sexist, bigoted and just all around rotten Jerry Falwell & Pat Robertson were. Not nice men at all. Jessica Chastain was fantastic in the Tammy Faye role. Extremely convincing. She definitely earned the Best Actress Oscar. Again, well worth watching, if nothing else, for Jessica Chastain. I haven't seen House of Gucci but I have seen the other two and enjoyed them, but Tammy Faye was a favorite. WE watched the oddest movie last night, Men. This woman rents a house in a small English village after the death/suicide of her husband. It was weird creepy and not what I expected.

Bodies Bodies Bodies :
“A group of rich 20-somethings plan a hurricane party at a remote family mansion, a party game turns deadly”.
Sooooo, saw this in the theater because my brother interned with the studio as he’s in motion media/animation etc. and he worked on this. The first twenty minutes was a cluster in trying to figure out what was going on but it finally made sense. It’s a horror comedy and there were a few laughs but maybe I’m too old now to get a lot of the references. I’m 40 and brother is 22. A lot of the laughs were because of stupidity. Either way, if it comes up on streaming for free, then recommend it as I didn’t see the twist coming.

Uncharted - on Netflix - standard treasure hunt movie. Mark Walberg and Tom Holland are well cast. While the move looks good with some outlandish stunts it was unmemorable, and easy to fall a sleep to.
DayShift - with Jaime Fox and Snoop Dog - vampire hunter genre - again on Netflix - again easily forgettable and easy to fall asleep to.

House of Gucci: Much better than what I thought it would be. Everyone did well except for Jared Leto's choice to play Paolo as some sort of overweight, balding buffoon. I've seen pictures of the real Paolo during that time period and he was a really dapper older gent that looked nothing like that.

Orphan: First Kill - better than I thought it would be for a prequel, there was an excellent twist towards the middle that made the whole movie. Julia Stiles was great.

Nope: While it had some editing issues I really enjoyed it. I wouldn't call it scary as much as a overwhelming creeping sense of dread that increases as time goes on. I also applaud Jordan Peele understanding nuance and the subtle but crucial difference between "People having horrible crazy things happen to them that just happen to be Black" vs "People having horrible crazy things happen to them because they are Black." I really enjoyed all the performances, especially Keke Palmer and Surprise!Michael Wincott (I recognised his voice instantly) and a lot of the scenes are beautifully shot.
I heard the original cut was 3 hours ten minutes and they cut an hour for the theatrical release. I would really like to see this as Peele originally intended it.

Orphan: First Kill - better than I thought it would be for a prequel, there was an excellent twist towards the middle that made the whole movie. Julia Stiles was great. I actually want to see that. We watched this movie The Last Descent, which was supposed to be the true story of a caver who got stuck in the Nutty Putty cave and rescue was not able to get him out. It is an intriguing story but what a crappy movie. A real lost opportunity. How many shots did we need of him standing in a field looking across at this wife and child?

Last night we watched Black Phone. It was very creepy and well made. I was surprised how much I liked it. It reminded me so much of our generation at that age and "Stranger Danger".

We watched "Jurassic World: Dominion" last night as our in-house Friday date movie.
I loved seeing the original actors who returned, and the little nod as to "how it all began" with the Barbisol can. There were several lines and shots reminiscent of the original movie.
Not an awful movie. Not a great movie. Perfectly good escapism for a couple of hours.
And Laura Dern needs to back away from the Botox.

ELVIS!!!Absolutely amazing!!! Austin Butler is fabulous!!! Elvis is a combination of movie and documentary. Extremely well made!!! Just saw this on HBO last night. I agree that Austin Butler was fantastic! I liked it for the most part, but thought it was a tad too long. It was quite different from what I expected but being that the director was Baz Luhrmann, it kind of made sense.

I'm going to have to watch it again; I kept falling asleep. But, from what I saw was a bunch of forced silliness and stupidity and bad acting. Note: Who picked up the pieces of Moljnor from the bluff in Norway where the sister destroyed it? Who transferred the pieces to the Museum in New Asgard and why didn't Thor acknowledge it was there while drinking himself into a stupor? Would it have coalesced for him rather than a dying Jane (who by the way looked dumb in her Thor get-up.)?
I'll need to watch again with a mind set that it is a nonsense comedy and then, maybe, I can enjoy it.

Today I watched Hocus Pocus, the 1st one. It was on TV a couple of days ago, I think ABC, and I taped it & watched today. Seeing that Hocus Pocus 2 is on Disney Plus, starting today, I figured I'd better watch #1 before I streamed #2. All in all, it was pretty good. It was fun. Kind of predictable, but still fun. Now I'm ready for #2.
