Yay! The French Open quallies were airing today!! Can't wait! Is anyone watching the HBO series about Serena? I think it's called Being Serena. It begins right before her win at the Australian Open when she took the pregnancy test and I think they're up to episode three and the wedding. I'm so impressed with her and her husband and OMG, that baby is SO cute! Anyway, it's a really well done series. Definitely thumbs

I knew that HBO was going to do that, but didn't realize it's started. I am going to spend the holiday weekend catching up on that - thanks Critical!

You're welcome! Episode 4 airs tonight and they're only around 30 minutes long, so it won't take you very long to catch up. As far as I can tell, they only did five episodes, so it wraps up next week. I'm not sure if it's a one time thing or not, but I'd suspect it isn't going to be an ongoing series.

I binged all the episodes that are out last night and absolutely loved it. The scene of her pumping then racing out to the fed cup match was amazing. Made you appreciate that in some ways she’s carrying the weight of working moms on her shoulders during this comeback which is a lot of pressure on her. I love the dynamic between her husband and her. I really didn’t know much about him and really like him. I also am fascinated by the dynamic her coach is working with trying to make tennis her top priority and operating as it is, but knowing it isn’t. Clearly it’s impacting me ... I woke up in the middle of the night last night having one of those stress moments that can wake you up and my thought was “why are all of Serena’s ground strokes going out.” At 2am I decided she’s hitting them too flat and needs more topspin.

I watched the final episode of Being Serena today. During the end when she was reading a letter to her daughter, I bawled my eyes out. Venus is often the sister gives credit for taking the baton from Billie Jean King and fighting for the feminist message in tennis. But I think there is so much about this docu series that does so much for feminism in terms of the realities of working moms. In the conversations she has about her dedication to the game, going to France to train and the impact on her family etc, there is so much that’s easy to say/see in the extremes of her level of tennis, but applies to working moms in all walks of life, what I admire is that there are times she chooses family and times that she chooses her work ... and both choices are right! I don’t know if she intended to deliver that message or not. But I saw it and I was moved by it.

Wow, that Isner - Del Potro match was like "Tennis for Giants!" Isner is 6'10" and Del Potro is 6'6"!
Very sad for Serena that she had to withdraw from the tournament due to injury. She's worked so hard to get back and had been getting better with every match. I can't imagine how frustrating that must be for her.

She seemed to be playing fairly well all things considered. No one wants to withdraw with an injury. I didn't see the Isner-Del Potro match but I can just imagine. So you think this is Nadal's to lose? I am, however, not sure who else will step up? Djokovic is having a tough match and I wonder where he is at.

I think it probably IS Rafa's to lose and the main factor is going to be his health. He's still likely recovering from that hip injury and he had both wrists and forearms taped in that match with Schwartzman. I think Del Potro may give him a lot more of a challenge than he got in his last match. Frankly, I'd love to see someone new win it. It's time to get some new blood in there.
The men's final will probably be Thiem in the bottom half of the draw and, preferably, Del Potro from the top half. That all hinges on how Nadal is feeling, because if his body holds out, I don't know if Del Potro can beat him.
I'm torn about who to root for in the ladies final. Of course, I want to cheer on Sloane Stephens, but Simona Halep is such a hard worker and, even though she's been number 1 for a while, she's never won a major. I'm good with either of them as the champion. I just hope it's a good match.

I am torn too about the women's match. How can I not cheer on Sloane, the future (and kind of now) of American women's tennis? But Halep is due. I always cheer for Nadal but darn I love Del Potro. Even if he doesn't win the semi, he has had one heck of a run and I believe he will move into the top 4 after this. If he makes it past Nadal, its him all the way for the win for me! I look at him as practically someone "new".

I'm so happy for Halep, but disappointed for Stephens. Simona has been at the top of the rankings for a while without a major, so I'm glad she finally got one. I only wish that third set had been more competitive or at least had a score that made it seem more competitive.
ETA: I thought Sloane's speech was so gracious and classy.

I continue to be amazed by what a class act Sloane is. She was so gracious as a winner at the US Open and equally as classy as the runner up today. It makes it very easy to pull for her. Hopefully next year they will be talking about how she too went from up a set and break to losing one year the. Champion the next!

I agree. That last set wasn't very good. And yes Stephens speech was very classy. I don't think she is going away anytime soon.
Now watching Nadal/Thiem

Just finished watching Federer blow through his latest opponent. Was it is last service game that lasted 54 seconds!? Did anyone see Serena in her interview after her round one match? Someone asked how much longer she thinks she'll stay in the game and she said something like she's in it until Roger retires. Then she mentioned that his new Uniqlo clothing deal is for ten years and gave a bit of a whimper
I'm very sad for Wozniacki. She's one of my favorite players, so it's a bummer to see her go out so early.
Has anyone watched Love Means Zero, the documentary on Showtime about Nick Bollettieri? I'm just starting it now. Will report back
ETA: I finished Love Means Zero and I just don't know what to make of Bollettieri. Either he's a total sociopath who just does what he wants with no thought to the feelings of others and genuinely doesn't remember the things he did OR if he remembers everything he did, knows it was sh!tty and is just pretending he doesn't remember. I'm not surprised Andre didn't want to be a part of the movie. I did enjoy the look back at various matches, but it didn't really change my feelings about NB.

Maybe it'll end up on a streaming platform. Well worth the time, but certainly not worth subscribing to Showtime for! Has anyone else seen the new Wimbledon commercial? I LOVE it. www.ispot.tv/ad/dOxt/wimbledon-lawnI'm a little less disappointed for Caroline Wozniacki after she was so snotty following her loss to Makarova. She was so rude about Makarova, saying she'd played above her level and would be surprised if she lasted much longer in the tournament (she has). I can understand her being disappointed, but that was classless. I have to say, I think Serena's tennis dress this time is awful. So poorly-fitted and you know she has them all custom made AND she often has a hand in designing her outfits. It's too loose in the arms and then bunches up oddly under her bust and around her shoulders. Just not flattering. I can't imagine why anyone thought long sleeves were a good idea. I'm glad to see her on the road back, but she should take some fashion advice from her sister, who always looks great on the court. IMO, your outfit shouldn't distract from your tennis.

WOW! What a day to have Centre Court tickets at Wimbledon! First Roger, then Serena, then Rafa, back-to-back! Amazing.
Roger and Rafa are playing so well. Can anyone prevent them from getting to the final? IMO, Nadal's half of the draw is tougher with Del Potro and Djokovic. I don't think Nishikori will be a factor with that arm injury, so I'd guess Djokovic will beat him and get to the semis. Isner's been playing well, if not a bit erratically (so, as he usually plays ) and Kevin Anderson isn't, IMO, good enough to stop Roger.
SO MANY top seeds gone in the women's draw. Can anyone beat Serena? Maybe Kerber?

Its amazing how all the women's top 10 are out and here sits Serena who took time off to have a baby and she is in the semis. Either the women's game is so deep or it is so inconsistent. Amazing. I am work so I can't watch the men's quarters but I'm cheering on Isner right now!

Loved the Nadal - Djokovic match ..... both days of it! I like them both, but I was cheering for Rafa.
Watched a bit of the men's final today. Impressed that a large majority of the men were wearing suits and ties. So very proper (and appreciated). Congrats to Nole on his win and kudos to Anderson for putting up a fight.

Today is the last day of quallies at the US Open. Play starts on Monday! They just finished up with the men's matches now. They also had the exhibition matches. Lindsay Davenport and Michael Chang played mixed doubles (vs. Navratilova and Jan-Michael Gambill) in the exhibition, which seems like such an odd pairing. She towers over him. Annoying that Federer and Nole are in the same quarter of the men's draw. Looks like Serena and Simona Halep are in the same quarter as well.

It was excellent. I'm sure there will be more great matches to come.
I really feel for the players dealing with this heat, but glad the tournament organizers put that heat rule in place so players can get a 10 minute break. They've also got ice towels, which seem to be helping as well. I'm sure ALL of the players are hoping for night matches, although it's currently 95º, so that's not good. That's hot if you're just sitting around. Imagine RUNNING around in it!
Bummer for Halep to get knocked out in the first round for the second year in a row.

I don't even like BEING in that heat. That heat rule is great, but it doesn't kick in until after the third set! IIRC, at least one of the men retired due to the heat before the end of the third set. There are definitely some players who are at a disadvantage with the heat. I know at least one or two have commented on how glad they were to have trained for this event in Florida! Del Potro seems to be cruising through his match today.
