Being a tennis player in Atlanta, there's no question that playing tennis in the heat can be terrible. That said, and I don't want this to come across like I'm not sympathetic to the players, weather factors are part of the outdoor game. A player has to learn how to have a lower toss with a serve if it's windy, and a player has to learn how to manage heat and hydration for summer matches. I've played in summer flex leagues before where certain players will intentionally push for matches at 2pm on a Saturday in high heat because they're in such great shape it gives them an edge. And I've had at least one of those I retired because I was feeling the impact of the heat. It sucks ... but it's also part of the game. After it happened, I learned the importance of pre-match hydration. The thing that gets scary for something like the US Open is that it's their livelihood. For me on a saturday afternoon, I can say "i'm seeing stars, I need to stop" and move on. When a person's income for that tournment as well as future seedings and rankings is at stake, the player may be more resistant to admit to feeling the effects of he heat and stop. Although I'm not sure how that is different than having a knee or shoulder issue and recognizing that pulling out of a match may be the wiser choice than suffering from longer range injuries by trying to ignore the problem.

Del Potro pulled out the win!
Andy Murray's down 1 set to 2 against Verdasco and he is not looking good. He looks like he might keel over at any moment. They just had their heat break too. Verdasco definitely looks like he's got more gas in the tank.

So far so good. I'm at work so I'm getting updates online. I really was hoping it would be a night game. I have to see what are the night games. Nadal, S. Williams, Muguruza, Sock..... I'm sure ESPN will show Nadal and Serena. Of course they were always going to show ALL of the Rafa / Serena matches. They did show a lot of the Sock match and since Muguruza is still playing, I think they'll go back to her match.
Rafa's looking VERY thin on top. I wonder if he'll try another hair transplant (allegedly) or if he'll go full Andre and just shave it. OR will he start playing in a baseball cap?
Happy for Verdasco pulling out that win against Murray, but it wasn't really Murray at full strength. He hasn't played a major since Wimbledon last year.
Anyone else notice that the crowds seem awfully thin? I know it's early in the tournament, but still. Seems odd.

I have noticed the last few years that Rafa is getting kind of thin up there. I don't think he will shave it all. I think he will just let it happen. HAven't heard about a transplant rumor. Interesting. I did notice not a lot of people but maybe the heat has to do with that?

Such a difference in just a few days! From horrid mid-90s heat to low 70s and rain! Matches on the courts that don't have a roof (ie all but two of them) were suspended today.
More upsets in the ladies draw including Wozniacki last night. Sloane Stephens is now the highest seeded player on the ladies side. I'd love to see her win again, but she'll probably have to get through Serena first, if they both win their next few matches.
I wish there wasn't so much focus on what Serena wears. I'm sure she does too!

I really wish I could have made it through to the end of the Nadal/Thiem match! When the first set went 6-0 I said there was no way this could continue but after Federer fell anything was possible. Wow. Not sure if Nadal woke up or what but Thiem put up quite a battle.

I'm not a Nadal fan, but I do like Djokovic. Still, I'm hoping for a Del Potro - Nishikori final too! I'm just not thrilled about yet another match between Rafa and Nole. Been there, done that :down
I'm sad Madison Keys couldn't pull out a win for an All-American women's final, but glad we've got a newbie in there. It seems unlikely that Osaka will be able to beat Serena, but I'd be thrilled to see it happen! If Serena wins, that'll be great too, although I always like to see newbies win.

I agree, I don't want same old same old. Del Potro winning would be such a great "comeback", though his has really been good, a GS is a GS. And Nishikori winning, wow would be fantastic. I think Osaka could be a big surprise, you just never know. I would like Serena to win because she would break the record at 24 and I do think she is the greatest female tennis player of all time, but if Osaka wins good for her.

I did not see the second set at the women's match so I guess I missed all that happened. Having seen the first set, I did think Osaka was going to win regardless. As for coaching, you can't tell me no one does this at all!

It was a tumultuous end, but Serena handled it gracefully giving credit to Osaka for a game well played. Poor young girl didn't know what to do on the podium given the crowd boos. Thank goodness Serena spoke first to calm everyone. Serena's manager did admit to giving a hand signal (that was called) but whether Serena even saw it is open to question. If she didn't see it she was well within rights to yell at the umpire that she isn't a cheater. Then her emotions took over and she broke her racket slamming it into the court - strike two and a point lost. Then she took her argument back to the umpire upon which he took away a game. At that point, the brass of the US Open came out to the umpire chair to hear what was going on. Both Serena and the umpire stated their cases. The game continued and Serena slammed her way through the next game, but lost the set. She hugged Osaka tight and that was that.

Patrick Mouratoglou is Serena's longtime coach, not her manager. He has admitted to coaching her, but a) it was not clear from the video that she even saw him (his hands were pretty low) and b) this is so common in tennis that many are calling for a change in the rules. Osaka's coach was seen doing it during the match too. I was watching Chris McKendry, Chris Evert and Mary Jo Fernandez talking about it yesterday and discussing whether or not they should just relax the coaching rules. Since everyone does it from the players' box, why not just make it legal? There's a big difference between that and having the coach down on the court, which IMO, is a bad idea. Changing the rules about coaching from the box would just acknowledge what everyone already knows is happening. I've felt for a while that maybe Serena and Patrick were not a great fit any more, especially since she had Olympia. They've been together for a long time (at least in tennis), so maybe it's time for Serena to make a change. This isn't the first time Ramos has had a run-in with a player. IIRC, this is the official that Nadal had issues with and swore he'd make sure Ramos never called another of his matches. He's also had issues with Kyrgios and Nole, among others. He's issued warnings, but no matter what those men said to him, you know what never happened? Yep, a game penalty. I'd hope that USTA officials would take a closer look at the situation and Ramos' behavior. Many, including Andy Roddick and Billie Jean King are coming to Serena's defense on Twitter. Meanwhile, she was fined $17K for code violations. Regardless of what happened, Osaka outplayed Serena and deserved the win. It sucks that her first Grand Slam win was marred by this controversy. I was glad Serena did what she could to calm the crowd, but Ramos owes both ladies an apology. Looking forward to the mens final today. GO Del Potro!

It's been illuminating watching the debate online about Serena and the whole dust-up with Ramos. It's amazing to me that there are people who think there's no double standard at work there it's NOT about gender or race at all. Sorry, but Ramos has had white male players say much worse to him and he never slammed them like he did Serena. Yes, she did escalate the situation, but it's certainly not the first time - not even in this event - that a player blew up at a chair ump. I really hope the governing body takes a look at Ramos' history, in particular, and rethinks having him work those big events. As for the "controversy" about Serena's French Open catsuit.... Sorry, but if that thing - which she wore because it's a compression garment and she has issues with blood clots (most recently right after she gave birth) - had been worn by a slim, gorgeous blonde like Sharapova or Azarenka, no one would have said a thing. It feels to me like certain people being intimidated by this powerful black woman. Serena's got a while to train for the fall season and then the Australian Open. I would love to see her come back and win that two years after she last won it. Her career does feel like it may be winding down, but I think she still has it in here to tie Margaret Court's GS record and even surpass it. Oh, and as for the men's final? Meh. I was rooting for Del Potro. Plus, no matter who wins, I want it to be a great match that goes to 5 sets.

I wasn't home for the men's match - I had my own tennis match to play which took a long time. I got home at 7 and turned on ESPN to see if they were still playing. I was surprised they still were, and figured it must be in the fourth or fifth set. I was really surprised to see they were still in the third. They must have played some LONG games!

Wow, when was the last time all of the seeds held through the semis in a Grand Slam? Possibly more recently than I remember? The top four men are in the semis at the French Open. Part of me is happy to see them all there, but the other part of me sort of likes unpredictability......and we're definitely getting that in the women's draw! None of the ladies in the semis have won before and only two are even seeded. The only American woman left is a 17 year old ranked 51 and she just knocked our Simona Halep. Amazing! With the cancellation of play yesterday, I have to think that may give the Nadal and Federer the edge, whichever of them reaches the final, since they got an extra day of rest over the Djokovic and Thiem.
