Whoopi had said a couple of times on The View that they didn't remove Will because they didn't want for things to then be about the removing of a black man. She said there were people strewn through the audience who were there to make those kind of calls, and collectively that is what they'd decided. When I read what libgirl2 found that all made sense. They knew he was not going to go peacefully.

Both men were Black as was WS wife. Oh bother Whoopi.

She never suggested it would be reasonable, just that they didn’t want to open the door for the situation to be perceived that way.

No way to know. And would it have been handled differently if it wasn’t WS? No way to know.
I didn’t mean to start a race discussion. I was just commenting that I was able to better understand why Whoopi said what she did now that we know he refused to leave.

True, we don't know anything really.Whoopi defended Cosby, I don't respect much of what she says. One news station here, said black man, protecting a black woman. Many think because Pfizer was a sponsor, and has come out with a drug for alopecia, that it was all staged... If Cumberbatch had won, like he should have imho, none of this would have happened..

Who are these many people?! I swear the things people come up with! Looney! Staged by Pfizer omg.

How would Cummberbach winning kept Rock from insulting Jada Pinkett Smith? His comments were made before the winner for best lead actor was announced.

I just found it also very telling of Will Smith's character when he was asked to leave the Oscars, and refused. I use to admire his acting skills before this, but he has slipped several notches of my favorite actors. Not interested in watching him.

I thought I read something online that other actors went to talk and/or console WS after the incident, and that’s partly why they didn’t escort him out. I guess that would kind of make sense if they were worried about creating more chaos with many others joining in with their opinions - “let him stay” “don’t remove him” etc.
To be honest, I didn’t watch the show….just read some of the stuff online afterwards.

Apparently, a video shows Jada laughing after the slap when WS is coming back to his chair. I saw it and it is hard to tell for sure. If so, just WTF is going on with these two? I would have been mortified or at best, not reacting.

The video was taken by someone sitting right behind them and you can see her heading motions as she is laughing after the ASSAULT and as WS is dropping F bombs. Ya what is up with them? And WS's mother said she has never seen him act like this..........whatever.

I saw that clip of WS's mom saying that too, momrek06. I saw that video of Jada, too. They said when they showed it, that viewers never got to see that moment.

I use to admire his acting skills before this, but he has slipped several notches of my favorite actors. Not interested in watching him. I saw last night on some show or the other, that Will Smith wasn't asked to leave, nor did he refuse to. Apparently someone associated with the show suggested it, but the Academy said No. So it wasn't Will who refused, it was the Academy. This actually makes some sense if you think about it. Already this put a bit of a stain on the Oscars & this year's ceremony. Just think, if they had hauled Will off kicking & screaming, & then just a few minutes later read the Actor Oscar winner: And the Oscar goes to ...... Will Smith, the same guy they had just removed kicking & screaming. How bad would that have looked to the other attendees & the home viewers? I'll tell you how bad. It would looked way worse than it already did. As is, this will blow over. In fact, personally I think it already should have. I say let it go. It's over. Nobody was seriously hurt. It can't be undone. It was nothing more than an embarrassment. Think about it. This is the same Academy that gave an Oscar to Roman Polansky & everyone cheered. What Will Smith did didn't even come close to comparing. If my above scenario had happened it would have been more than an embarrassment. It would have been a huge humiliation to the Academy that would have lasted much longer than this will. I say let it go & move on. Personally I'm tired of hearing about it & think Will Smith has been verbally beaten up enough. He'll think twice before doing anything like this again, as he should. No reason to try to destroy the man's livelihood or acting reputation. He did enough of this himself. He lost his temper & acted like a jerk. So did Chris Rock. It's over. Let him get back to what he does, work.

I heard on tv that he was indeed asked to leave the premises, and refused. I don't think anyone's intentions are to destroy the man's livelihood or reputation. His actions spoke for themselves. My DH and I still maintain at times some of these actors/actresses feel they can say or do anything. They're not above anyone else, in that regard.

Covid has put a mental or taxing strain on everyone, add that to some personal problems, it's a recipe for disaster. I love movies, the entertainment world is important in my world. I realized how much not going to live theatre for 2 years. I think it will blow over, when the media outlets say it is. ET etc. Meanwhile, I feel sorry for Coda, and all the other winners, that should be in the limelight, and are not. .

I can't help but think that he had a harder time accepting that younger man (and friend of their son) who she was rumored to have slept with. Maybe he isn't okay with all of it but goes along because he adores his wife?

She should probably try to cut back back on certain types of remarks that she says. Whoopi Goldberg was recently suspended a couple of weeks from her own show for racial comments that she had made. Jada seems to still be in love with 2-pac and I think that really gets to Will. I don't think he would have tried to hit 2-pac like that though if he was still alive today.

Everything doesn't have to be about race. Sometimes people act inappropriately. All races. All sexes. I see this as one of those times. First guy said something cruel & inappropriate that was over the line. Second guy acted like a jerk about it & went way over the line. The Academy was put in a no win situation. They didn't know what to do so they let it pass hoping it could blow over. Race had nothing to do with it.

Exactly, and that's why they wanted to keep any viewers who could possibly jump to that conclusion from seeing it that way.

Denzel Washington has made his first public comments about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock during the 94th Academy Awards. While appearing on a panel at pastor T.D. Jakes' annual International Leadership Summit on Saturday, the 67-year-old actor explained why he got up after witnessing Smith's response to a joke made onstage by Rock. "No way I could have sat in my seat," the Tragedy of Macbeth star said during the event live streamed by The Wrap. "That's just not who I am." Washington, Tyler Perry, and Bradley Cooper were among the stars seen speaking with the King Richard actor, 53, shortly after he hit Rock, 57, over a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, appearing in a possible sequel for the 1997 film G.I. Jane (Pinkett Smith, 50, publicly revealed that she has alopecia in 2018).RELATED: Samuel L. Jackson Receives His First-Ever Oscar from Denzel Washington: 'I'm Really Proud' Earlier in the conversation, Washington recalled an old adage that resonated with him in wake of Smith slapping Rock during Sunday's Oscars broadcast, per The Wrap, The Hollywood Reporter, and Variety. "At your highest moment, be careful, that's when the devil comes for you," Smith claimed Washington told him just before his speech. I don't wanna say what we talked about, but there but for the grace of God go any of us," Washington explained. He added, "Who are we to condemn? I don't know all the ins and outs of this situation, but I know the only solution was prayer, the way I saw it, the way I see it."
