Sounds like it starts in Detroit but will show them eventually scouting out the NOLA project: Futon CriticI appreciate that Bargain Block still addresses homes that are reasonably priced and not the million dollar plus homes featured in the "Build the Block" competition shows and the "Beach House" shows. Yes, you still can buy a home in America, it may not be 3000 sq ft and not have air conditioning, or have laundries in each bedroom closet but it is still a home. Don't forget the drink station and fireplace in those closets. Because we all need to sip our espressos in front of a fire while perusing our collection of Louboutins. I can't wait to watch Keith and Evan. I may not love all the crazy designs and colors, but it's something different and attainable for people.

Anyone watching Backed by the Bros?
It's a Jonathan and Drew show on Thursdays that shows them mentoring real estate investors.
I am all for real estate investing but some of these folks, ask for the Bros advice and then totally ignore it, especially when it comes to actually updating items. There are the ones that want to go for cheap and yet want $4000 a month in rent.
The rent the Bros say people should charge is ridiculous. Who are these people that have so much money?
You do get a behind the scenes of the Bros business, that they have a team of project managers slash general contractors and designers. It does not come off sleazy unlike Tarek's operation.
It's interesting to note that some of these investors do not do any research into comparing rents in the area etc... or what would be their ROI, or anything. They don't understand the building process, they don't have building permits, they don't have blueprints, or anything.

Christina on the Coast - the best thing about this episode was seeing Izzy again. Two appearances by douchebag Josh, too bad they didn't edit him out.
Kitchen and living room redo, the homeowners chose dark blue cabinets (color!) with black hardware that didn't look great. Everything else was white or light beige, and it felt like the living room needed something dark to balance out the space. But what do I know.
Interesting that they showed Christina hiring a designer to "help out." I've read that Christina doesn't do much designing at all, other people do and she's just the face for HGTV.

Bearcata James is still there. From what I've read, the "new" girl Kylie has been working for Christina quite a while now, she and James do most of the designing and have for years. I don't know why they just now want to introduce her as a new employee (which is a lie), but maybe she wanted a little credit for her work. I don't know.

HGTV gossip: I see Alison pulled both her Chicago and Atlanta properties off the market since there were no bites. Why not drop the price? Also: I have read blind items about Christina and some new guy. Already.

Also: I have read blind items about Christina and some new guy. Already. Not sure about the Atl property but the Chicago loft is extremely overpriced for the area. For the same price you can get a comparable property in a more accessible area with more amenities; shopping, parks, nightlife, etc.
I would also guess that due to Chicago laws that average out property taxes based on the most expensive property on a block/area, her neighbors probably really hate her. This is an area where the median home price is around 450k. Their taxes have probably gone up quite a bit.

What do they say about flipping a property. Don't design it as if it is your house and you are going to be living in it. That and her constant bragging about flying over to Paris to go antique shopping. I truly think she OVERSPENDS too much on the design part of the homes she renovates and expects the buyer to want to pay for it.
I guess Alison had learned nothing from that debacle she went thru with Donovan.
Humble just does not last long on this girl.

Unlike the ATL loft (which I always had the impression was something she planned to sell anyway) Alison seemed to love the Chicago space and wanted it as a permanent home base for herself and her family. This is just me thinking out loud, but only something really extreme would make her sell that space. My guess is something happened in her personal life in the past year, and she found herself having to liquidate assets to get some cash.

Christina and Tarek NEWS! www.realtor.com/news/celebrity-real-estate/real-estate-scam-christina-hall-tarek-el-moussa-hgtv/This is the same stunt the Trump College pulled and Flip this House's Armando Montelongo, and there was that one other flipping show based near Boston. Everyone thinks flipping is easy, it is not. HGTV has promoted the idea that you can make a lot of money doing this. I don't think it is responsible for destroying the housing market but there are a lot of crappy flips on the market.
Christina and Tarek got their appearance money and ran all the way to the bank. Montelongo was worse as he set it up as a long term business and was on Undercover Boss showcasing it.
Once he really struck it rich, he cut his brother out of the business, and divorced his wife who was partners with him and left everyone behind.

I guess they didn't learn from Montelongo's mess. And who are these dummies paying thousands of dollars for a stupid get rich quick seminar? I've seen some seriously hideous flip attempts around here from people who probably watched a few episodes of something on HGTV and thought they could make a quick buck. It ain't that easy.

I attended a seminar hosted by my credit union on how to stage your home to sale and one of the ladies was a flipper. Not very talkative, unlike Tarek and Armondo who are big braggarts, and she was very much it is a hard business.
I have seen realtor listings in our area and you can tell someone has gone in and redone the floors and painted the walls, and put in a new kitchen but some of the smaller homes desperately need a one or two walls down to make it a better flow but that was never done.

So not only did HGTV not use them, they also effectively cockblocked them from going elsewhere for 3 years, which might have been what put the breaks on the Magnolia show. That is super crappy on HGTV's part, but I'm happy to see Luke and Clint again on their terms. Looking forward to the new show because Clint will be back and the focus won't be on Luke's family.

The Good Bones special started Wednesday.
Part 1 was a bout Mina's Lake Cottage. At the reveal where Mina is narrating and saying this is all about family. I did not see one person I recognized from her Good Bones days. Who are these people?
Oh, remember how Mina was always complaining about money? The House cost $518,000 to buy and they put in a $100,000 to renovate. She had to pull back on the renovation budget. That comes across a tad shady there.
Next week is Karen's beach cottage in Wilmington, NC.

I was kind of bored watching Good Bones: New Beginnings (or whatever it was called). Like, let's cry about money, then buy a mid century lakehouse for half a mil because ~family~, then proceed to do everything in a bland white/light beige because we don't like mid century colors. The final shot of all your ~family~ didn't even include your own mom?
Big fat meh. That little mantel looked lost on the massive stone fireplace, and nothing else really stood out to me. I see she's reopening her failed store in another town nearby with hopefully more foot traffic. It seems like she's trying to copy Chip and Jo's Silo store but nobody's interested...
Next week is Karen's turn, hopefully she hasn't developed an allergy to color too.

Christina on the Coast - whole lot of Josh/Tennessee stuff to fast forward through this week. The house was a boxy 40's place that ended up a generic white stucco/black trim on the outside. Kitchen was redone with white/wood cabinets and sage green island. Color! She even used a darker sage in the dining room, and...wallpaper on the ceiling. Eh. Not a fan.
Hated the kids' bathroom, and why did she take the little girl's bed away and put a daybed in there?
Unpopular opinion, but I kind of liked the weird pebble area by the stairs. I would have loaded it up with plants and not had to worry about the hardwood floor getting wet.

Good Bones Season 9 Episode 2 - Karen's Beach Bungalow - August 21 2024
Realtor link to Karen Laine's home at 807 Russell Aly, Wilmington, NC.
What happened to Karen Laines' (4th) husband? HGTV's Karen E. Laine and her husband, Roger Rominger, have separated after seven years together, Closer can exclusively confirm. The former couple's joint petition for legal separation was filed on April 26, 2022, according to court records viewed by Closer.Nov 2, 2023
Just watched the Karen beach cottage episode of Good Bones. Her husband Roger is not mentioned at all and I thought maybe he died as he did have cancer while Good Bones was airing.
Karen mentioned that her one son, wife and 4 kids moved back to Indianapolis and now live in her house and she lives in the carriage house she built over the garage. This property is right next door to Mina's but they don't speak.
It was a very nice episode with Karen renovating a very old house. I was a bit confused as Karen seemed as if she was very concerned about her money and that this was a very expensive built. Karen you are having a custom mural done, you had a custom metal gate for your new home done. Your budget is about $200,000, I am guessing it will be closer to $300,000 once this build is complete.
The outside of the house is complete. Looks like a cute cottage. Next week they will do the inside.
Glad to see Cory and MJ. At least Karen is maintaining her relationships with the team. They look and act as if they like each other.

Good Bones Season 9, Episode 1 - Mina Takes the Lake - August 14, 2024 This was supposed to be a four part special (2 for Mina, 2 for Karen) and it looks as if Episode 1, Mina's Lake House will be a supersized episode so really 2 episodes aired in a 90 minute spot. The Lake House is located in Martinsville, Indiana, about 30 minutes south of Indianapolis. This is life after Good Bones. Mina and the GB crew were doing about 14 to 15 houses a year so they would have this number of episodes to air. All the finances were on Karen and Mina and not the production company or HGTV. It is a lot and I can understand wanting to pull back after doing this for 8 years. We saw Mina grew the company a bit too fast toward the end of the show with the Store, HQ, and the Charlotte's Place (event center). While we didn't see Mina's relationship with her husband Steve Hawke or her wedding, we did participate a bit with the birth of her first child, and her IVF struggles. Did we really need to see all that? It was a natural story telling part of the show. If Mina wanted her privacy none of that needed to be mentioned. What I find a bit strange is how public Mina made her family drama and pushed everyone out of her life and yet the narration of this special is "I want to simplify my life, I want to slow down my life a bit, I want to enjoy my children while they are small", nothing wrong with that. It was sad to see HQ emptied out, to find out that Mina was down to one employee, the project manager we met in the last season of the show. I think Mina expanded too fast with the Store and with HQ. In one sense they do need a store front to get rid of all the excess staging stuff they buy for staging and they needed a warehouse to store all that stuff, but it just felt too fast, too much, then the event place build, and the pandemic hit. To be honest when the episode showed that Mina had HQ for sale I was smirking. Just feeling "up yours Mina". I was smirking more, when the first sale fell thru and the second sale fell thru and heard abut the fraudulent bank check. Then to find out the entire episode was about Mina's Lake House renovation, that they had been looking for 3 years and they needed the HQ money to buy. Wait, the entire last two seasons of Good Bones was about I don't have money. To be honest I don't know how the ladies made any money from their houses as carrying costs and closing costs were never discussed and their profit margins were small.
Outside: Original color stone and brown siding. Paint the siding black. Paint the garage door black. Paint the double doors a very dark brown. That I don't get. Install new supersize black outside lighting. This was nice. There was minimal landscaping, so they tore out the old stuff, left the river rock and bought 3 huge round black pots in put in some evergreens. Outside done.
Inside: Had a $200,000 budget to refresh the entire house. No sale HQ, revise budget to $100,000 and just do upstairs. Leave the basement, deck and dock for another time. Paint the ceilings and walls white. Install a blond looking vinyl plank. Redo the kitchen, kids bathroom, and primary bathroom. Did like how they expanded the toilet portion of the primary bathroom over the stairwell.
People: was surprised to see Austin and MJ help with the Demo. Steve said he was surprised to see people she used to employ. Mina replied, "well, at least they don't hate me".
Funny how they did entire segment on District Co, with them clearing out the store. I always thought it was a strange place to have a retail store as there was no foot traffic except for the locals walking their dogs. The coffee and wine bar were too high end for the neighborhood and to open in the middle of a pandemic where you were told to stay home. Talk about not reading the business room. It was interesting to hear that while the business did not take off it was not a total fail, it was breaking even. Let's be honest it broke even due to Good Bone fans. Mina had a business offer to move District Co to Noblesville, Indiana, to a storefront in the town square. Mina pulled it as a surprise to her husband to see the space, yet it is obvious the space is being painted and cabinets being installed. Most business's fail within 5 years and District Co was around for what 4?
The house is finished. Mainly it is a white box, with blond vinyl flooring with new bathroom vanities, mirrors, faucets, tubs etc ... The biggest change is the kitchen. Looks huge. Most of the color is from the various wood tones in the furniture pieces. Mina did use Iron Timbers for 3 custom pieces. Funny how she always finds the money to spend on herself.
The family arrives. Steve's mother, father, and sister are dead. Mina is estranged from her mother and most of the Good Bones crew. I see a lot of strangers. I see Brittany the Two Chicks project manager, I see MJ, I see Mina's sister. It's funny how Mina and Steve who don't host parties or family say they are going to host parties and family at the lake.
Much of this episode is Mina talking about the next stage of her life after a very hectic 10 years. Not one word about the Good Bones crew or her mother. It's like Karen and Tad do not exist and both of them helped Mina get to this stage in her life. I did notice a lot that Mina looks way younger. Botox? I know she had under eye surgery. What female tweak has she had not done to improve her post baby momma figure and life.
That's a very slow healing process. Yes, it sounds incredibly snarky.

Just catching up on last week's shows - Karen's little cottage was cute, I loved the colors. I wonder if it wouldn't have been cheaper to just build new, because that poor little house was just rotten. And I thought she was closer to the beach, but she's in the downtown area. The riverwalk is nice. Did I hear her say she had four grandchildren? No mention of Mina's kids? Yikes. I get that her relationship with Mina is shaky, but don't write off the kids like that, they didn't do anything wrong. Not much to say about Christina's show, same old black/white/light wood stuff. Way more modern than I care for. I laughed when they wanted the floor torn up because it was sooo dark - mine is the same color, and I don't think it's dark at all.

The son who moved back and is in her house has the four kids that they showed.
As for Mina's children, Jack and Charlotte. It comes across that Mina is keeping them from seeing Karen. I have plenty of co-workers who had in-laws that have done that. My SIL wanted my sibling to cut of all ties with us/birth family when they got married as "she is his family" and that "we were not his family anymore".
I found it really strange that Mina did not have her brother at her house warming just her sister Kelsey. That is very much on Mina.
Thing is Mina wouldn't have had the success with Two Chicks without her mom's help and money, cause Mina didn't have any at the time. But now ..... that and her complaining about not having money yet somehow she finds enough for her mommy makeover, new boobs, eye surgery, cool sculpture, a half a million dollar lake house plus $100,000 for a renovation. I have a feeling Mina wanted her kids first in Karen's heart not her brothers.

Christina on the Coast - a little too much white for me this week (I don't love white walls), but the kitchen was decent. Light blue/gray lowers with white uppers, the same old white oak looking floor. The rough stone on the fireplace and backsplash was pretty, but have fun cleaning it behind that stove when it gets splattered with something. Yikes. Could have totally done without the clip of her getting the glutathione/magnesium IV. She needs a cheeseburger injection, she's always been thin but her bones are sticking out and she's lost all of her behind.

Good Bones Season 9 Episode 3 - Karen's Beach Bungalow - August 28 2024 Part 2 of Karen's Wilmington NC beach bungalow build. Karen said the build was only 600 sq ft. Karen is a very good narrator. I do miss the dynamic when Mina and Karen bounced off each other. She is not a manic here as she was on the main Good Bones series. Was that for show? Good to see MJ and Austin and Cory. You can tell all three of the Good Bones crew enjoy her and like her company and there is respect all around, especially considering the age range. MJ - helped pick the color palette for the house. Green and blue sea glass, oranges and creams from the sand, grasses, and shells. That translated into Karen dying her newly installed 10" white oak hardwood floors a pale blue. Her Wilmington contractor was horrified. MJ - helped with the final styling. I liked that the entire house was a crisp white as Karen loves color and you need to bounce of that much saturated color off the white. You have the blue stained floor, the plywood countertops painted a sea glass pale green and epoxied, pops of gold, rusts, and oranges, and of course raspberry. Karen may have not kept her front door raspberry but it got inside the house with contemporary paintings, furniture and bed coverings. Loved all the pattern and color. The dark teal toilet is unusual but it works with the white and green color palette in the bathroom. Not so sure about having only two extra beds in the house when Karen's oldest son Casimir has 4 children, Dom, Caz, Benjamin and Alexandria. Karen also noted that her youngest daughter Kelsey also just gave birth to a girl. Karen absolutely adores her grandchildren and it seemed weird that she was moving all the way to Wilmington by herself, but she wanted to winter there. That seemed to be a bit conflicted. I know Karen has another son in Indy who is a doctor but he is not mentioned much and of course no word at all about Mina and her two children. Karen did a road trip with Austin bringing down furniture for the bungalow from Indy. Karen of course took Austin for dance lessons and they learned the North Carolina Shag. Austin surprisingly is very good on his feet. They also included Karen volunteering for "Welcome Home", a charity that helps disabled people organize their homes to suit their needs. Of course she roped in Cory to help her create a collage painting based of a sample the client gave them. It was good to see Cory again. Again, Karen really did a good job promoting this charity. I think the biggest take away from this episode is that Karen is not presented as this kooky, New Age, cackling airhead that was her shtick when Good Bones was on the air.
Overall it was nice to see what happened to Karen and Mina after Good Bones last episode. But there does seem to be unfinished business between the two ladies. The two it really hurts are Mina's children Jack and Charlotte as Karen comes across as a great grandma. I love how Karen talks to the kids when they are painting the birds for her birdhouse.

Good Bones - when did Karen get a nose ring and why did her dog have a purple head? Loved all the colors, really liked the epoxy kitchen counter. I don't know why she spent all that money on nice wide plank white oak only to put blue fabric dye on it, though...I thought it was pretty as it was and some blue rugs would have given plenty of color. Bath was okay, I guess she went with fiberglass for easier cleaning. So is she just going to visit it occasionally and rent it out, or leave it empty when she's in Indy...? And North Carolina doesn't get to claim the Shag, it originated in Myrtle Beach (South Carolina) in the 30's and is our state dance.
