If I win I would just sell the house. Except for the one in Austin they have never had them in a place where I would want to live, and the designer has a nasty tendency to "renovate" old beautiful homes into something...completely different; he does better when they are building a home from the ground up.

The new episodes of Hometown start this Sunday at 7pm CST. I'm wondering how they are going to handle Covid on the show. There's also going to be a sneak peak of Joanna Gaines new cooking show premiering earlier in the day on HGTV, FN, and a few other Discovery channels...probably to get people more interested in Discover+ THANKS Kao just set the DVR!!!

The new episodes of "Property Brothers: Forever Home" is going to be exclusively on Discover+ now. I wonder how many new shows are going to be Discover+ exclusives now? Seriously considering getting it as I don't have Animal Planet and watch a lot of channels in the Discover family.

Yes, but with a difference; all the channels under the Discover umbrella will be under it (ID, HGTV, Food Network, Science, TLC, etc) and besides having access to past shows will also have new content that is not available on their regular programming. For example, Ben Napier is doing a companion show for Hometown where he shows exactly how he makes the furniture for each episode of Hometown but it will only be available on Discover+. It's also looking like a lot of Chip and Jo content is going to be on there as well. I like watching early episodes of Property Brothers and all of them aren't available on Demand, and the same for Season 4 of Halloween Baking also not going to be available. Rumor has it that they are going to remove the feature where you can watch past episodes on Discover sites with a cable password on their sites.
Price is on two levels; $4.99/month with commercials, 6.99/month with no commercials. Pretty reasonable, especially if you watch a lot of Discover channels and want all the new content.

Eastcoastmom I have enough pay channels already. Oh well. Totally agree there is a certain point you just need to forget adding another streaming service. I don't even watch everything on the on the three I do have. Let's face it there is a lot of junk on Amazon Prime, Hulu and Netflix (well not so much) on top of all the crappy sports stations on the regular cable that I pay for and don't watch but subsidize for those who do. I can't stand subsidizing those ridiculous salaries of those athletes who I don't know or care about.

I really wanted to see Joanna's new stuff and Ben's woodworking show, but I don't know if I want to pay for yet another streaming service. Spectrum just bumped me to $220 a month also, which I'm pissed about. The new Home Town last night was sweet, I liked the family tree painting they had done. I didn't know how I'd feel about all that black in the dining room, but it wasn't awful. Still a bit dark for my taste. The big family room with all that wood looked way better after painting the walls and adding the doors to the patio.

Lots and lots of channels with Premier soccer and old football and basketball games, but can't access the Olympic channel. There is only so much North Woods Law, Lone Star Law, and endless Law and Order I can watch. For all that money there is nothing on except for the streaming networks. I think COVID may have killed network tv. Re: Home TownI didn't mine the black wainscoting and trim in the dining room it played off the wallpaper nicely and probably looks way better in person than on TV. What concerns me is the cost of the renovation vs what we see as the result. The renovation was $100,000. They painted the outside of the house, the inside, put in a new kitchen but kept most of the original cabinets. I certainly hope they upgraded any electrical and HVAC as I see the kept the original roof. I didn't see any new windows and I did see window AC unit on one of the upstairs bedrooms. Speaking from personal experience a new HVAC makes a world of difference and that size house needs a two tier system. In addition after I put in a new HVAC I had new windows put in. The difference between builder grade and what I have now is amazing. Considering this series is in Laurel, Mississippi I would want my house to be energy efficient in those areas especially in the summer. I do hope they upgraded the finishes in the entire house for the amount quoted. BTW the family room was amazing, the space was huge. I liked the LVT slate floor in the kitchen.

I pay 252.00 for Cox cable which includes phone, internet and cable but I can't afford to add another 4.99 just to watch a few of these shows on Discovery+. My husband is the one who does all the tv watching.
I liked the new Home Town but there were a few things I wasn't crazy about. THe family room was my favorite part.

I loved everything, especially the mural with the little foxes. That was a really nice touch. We get Sling instead of cable and my partner and I split the streaming services costs; he gets the Amazon, Hulu for free through Spotify, HBOMax, and Criterion while I get Netflix and Disney+. I could add on Discover+, especially since I really like Animal Planet and that's the one Discover Channel Sling doesn't have. I'll also be the main person watching it so it makes more sense for me to get it. Bearcata: I agree with you about a new HVAC system being everything; we recently got a new one and even though we live in an older, non heat efficient building the difference between what we had and what we have now is night and day.

Bearcata : I agree with you about a new HVAC system being everything; we recently got a new one and even though we live in an older, non heat efficient building the difference between what we had and what we have now is night and day. The two things the original builder of my home really messed up on are the horrible window install in the upstairs corner bedroom I use as my office. The Original windows had been installed so badly that the room constantly leaked AC and was the hottest room in the house. I thought I live in a southern state and that side of the house was southern facing and getting sun all day all year long and too bad. Two new windows, double pane, argon gas, UV coating and installed properly made a HUGE difference in how comfortable the entire upper floor of the house felt during the summer. The second thing the original builder messed up was the install of the front door. After replacing the AC, and most of the windows in the house I had a new front door put in as the original never closed correctly, was splitting and the front hall was cold all the time. After the original door was removed I was told the reason it never closed properly was that the door frame was actually too big for the opening the framers had built. If the door installers had simply taken an electric saw and cut into the top sill by about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch the problem would have solved. But no they didn't do that. They forced the door frame to fit into a slightly too small opening and the pressure of the weight of the house on that door framing on a slightly too big door unit caused it to wrap and never close properly and leak. Once the new door was installed again, the difference in the front of the house was amazing. I am sure overall I am saving money from not losing heat or AC to the outside.

HGTV aired a new series this week called Frozen in Time. Maureen McCormich, "Marcia" from the "Brady Bunch is one of the co-hosts. I liked it. The episodes are 30 minutes, and they update homes that have not been updated since they were built. This is not a flipping show, it's a renovation show for the home owners and trying to honor the era the homes are from. There did a good job. I especially liked the second episode where the home owner bought her grandmothers home an updated the kitchen, dining room, and a jack'n'jill shower bathroom into two separate bathrooms. Luv'ed the pops of color.

Home Town: Season 5, Episode 2 - Color Psychology - January 10, 2021
I do appreciate that Ben and Erin are always respective of a clients budget.
Yeah, first time ever did I hear about air conditioning being in the budget.
Pet Peeve, keeping the old leaky windows. I get some folks want to keep the charm of an older home, however after living with very poorly made windows that were not installed correctly I just don't get keeping single pane windows that maybe over 70 years old. Yes, windows can be incredibly expensive but old ones leak heat in the winter and leak AC in the summer, it makes no sense to me as you end up with high heating and cooling bills.
It was interesting that the clients didn't want the house to be too nice just a step up from where the tenants have been.
I liked the colors Erin picked for the house color and for the interior. The kitchen was so much fun.
Luv'ed the backsplash. Who doesn't like lemons.
However, I thought one bathroom was not enough and should have been two full baths or at least an additional powder room.

Yes! I was saying the same thing. I know they were on a limited budget, but just one bathroom in a house with a potential for several moms with kids living there...that's not enough.
I usually don't like yellow, but that shade she used was very pretty.

I had kinda mixed feelings about this episode. I can understand being a non-profit with limited resources but these people came across as very "Make it nice, but not *too* nice" subtext that didn't set right and reminded me of how some people treat foster kids in their households. :/ I'm really glad that Erin and Ben did the most with the budget and created a space that is clean, pretty and uplifting for the people who will be staying there. Not sure how many people will be staying there at a time but they really should have sprung for another bathroom.

I thought Erin did a great job. I fully understand not overdoing the decor. When you are in the situation some of these people are in they are just glad to have a clean bed and a roof over their heads. Kudos to the couple who are doing this.

Flip or Flop - what kind of facial treatments has Tarek been getting? He looked all weird and plastic last night. The house was definitely an improvement over the smelly mess that it started out as, but I always have trouble remembering anything that stood out to me the next day because they're all basically the same thing every week. I do wish Christina would stop wanting to tear down every patio cover, nobody wants to sit in the hot sun and it looked just fine after it was painted.

Watching Hometown right now and OMG, while I can understand why he picked the cabin (nostalgia) this place is raggedy as hell. If Erin and Ben are able to make it beautiful I will be pleasantly surprised because everything is rotten and falling apart.
edit: Am surprised! They worked their magic and took a rustic approach but everything worked out in the end; very masculine (which fits the owner, a single male) and very cosy. The outside looked a million times better than it did initially and I loved the updates to the hardware, paint job, and countertops in the kitchen. The bathroom was also very cute. It was great that the worked the rotten ceiling in their favor by vaulting it.
It seems like a lot of artsy people and others are seeing the appeal of Laurel and I admit, I see it too. Beautiful housing stock, temperate climate, diversity in the sense that a lovely mix of people live together and actually get along, plus a small town feel where folks are in your business but it's because they care and they look out for you. To find all of those qualities in a small town is extremely rare.

The house in “Newport” has been panned by many. The house is actually not in Newport, it’s in Portsmouth. The interior is too Tacky...looks the decorator shopped at Christmas Tree Shop. (For those who haven’t shopped at Christmas Tree Shop, it’s a chain of retail stores on the East coast. They carry decorative stuff for every season. They also carry a lot of shore-themed decor, like crab place mats, crab table cloths, crab sculptures, crab wall decor, and crab flags. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve spent many $ at Christmas Tree Shop. ) The thing I don’t like about the dream home is the number of colors used in the house. Yikes, every room is a bold color. My favorite dream home ever was on Martha’s Vineyard . It was gorgeous and I saved many of the photos from that house as inspiration for my house. Part of the reason I signed on today was to find out if anyone else felt as I did; woodiedog, you are spot on the money. The house looked like a miss-mash of different ideas. A few bold colors are ok, but different bold styles are (imo) not! I saw Early American brick with the metal "rick rack", some traditional and a couple of modern pieces all thrown in together. Each room looks different from the last. I guess that is ok if you like things disjointed. (And I guess the open concept thing is fading out?)
I know what you mean about the shore-themed items getting tiresome. I live in the high mountains, and when I see carved bears, ducks, elk, and moose pictures or doo-dads incorporated in the design, I just roll my eyes. So expected. Looks like they decorated out of a local souvenir shop.
This design house is in a nice place, but I am not a "East Coast Person", so if I won it, I would sell it immediately. Someone would get a really great bargain from me!
But then again, that is "just my thoughts".....

Home Town - I wanted them to choose the mid-century house when I saw it, but was pretty happy with how the Cape Cod they chose turned out. The lime wash turned out better than I thought. The only gripes I had was the wall oven stuffed over in the corner next to the fridge, and the heavy veining on the countertops just isn't my favorite thing. Bathrooms were pretty, I liked the blue glass tile and that patterned floor tile.

Home Town Season 5, Episode 3 - A Musician's Retreat - Air date: January 17, 2021
I must admit I was shocked at the condition of the client's father's cabin. No roof, vulture's nesting in the attic, rot everywhere, it looked one second from falling down. Even Erin and Ben were not hopeful.
I do have to give mucho credit to Erin and Ben and their construction crew to listening to their client and saving the old shack. Again not my favorite colors but Erin knows how to put together a color palette and give their client what they wanted. They also have some great experts on their team as the wood countertops looked fabulous after they were restored. I must say that kitchen also looked great after the team was finished.

Luv'ed the kitchen. Erin "Grandma Millennial" strikes again. Luv that Erin and Ben respect the style of the house and they style of the home owner.
Nice to see that there are homes in Laurel that cost more than $25,000.
Luv'ed the mid-centaury modern home, nice to see that type of home.

Home Town: Season 5, Episode 5 - A Laurel Hug - January 31, 2021
Wow, this is the second episode that featured a young widow where the husband died very young. I think there was one where the husband was part of the filming crew, and now Kendal's husband and in this case Kendel worked for Ben and Erin's company.
I liked the house and what they did. I don't mind the rooms that are compartmented as long as it suits the feel of the house and makes sense for the owner and how they live. Erin simplified the color theme and made it uniform through out the home. I like the painted trim. I do like the colors in the kitchen cabinets, there is color but it is pale enough to be considered neutral. I really liked the sun room and all of the French doors.
What is very confusing is that this was a 3 bedroom 2 bath home and over 2100sq ft and yet they made it a two bedroom 3 bath home. Why? Just to give the owner a master suite with an attached bathroom?
What I don't like:
1. I hate it when folks put handprints in fresh concrete, and they did in very deeply and in the middle of a step. Thank you Erin and Ben for spraining my ankle when my heel lands on an uneven surface.
2. I didn't like the backsplash in the kitchen. The color on the tile make it look old and dirty.
What I like:
1. I appreciate the Erin and Ben try to keep the character of the old homes and are conscious of the owners budget.
2. I like that Erin and Ben go the extra mile to personalize the homes for the owner such as making a coffee table and dog bed and a memory quilt with quotes from the deceased husbands notes to his wife.

One of the things I love the most about Ben and Erin is they like to do something personal for the owners and the quilt embroidered with quotes from her husband's love letters was such a beautiful and thoughtful gift. The idea of being comforted by her husband is a lovely one. I also like the fact that they did NOT remove walls and maintained the cozy compartmental rooms separated by the wide openings and pocket doors; when they were opened it created a nice, easy flow from room to room. I am glad that they removed the wall separating the hutch from the kitchen because it was unnecessary. The bathroom was kinda unnecessary but some people are really sticklers for having an en-suite and she loved it, so as long as she's okay with losing a bedroom it's fine. The en-suite itself was really lovely, and I loved the tile and the industrial steel and glass guard by the tub.
I need that dog bed, lol.
