Farmhouse Fixer - Season 1 Episode 1 - Pilot - March 3, 2021 Jonathan Knight when not on tour with the New Kids On The Block renovates old farmhouses. The house in the pilot was build in 1783 and is located in Hollis, NH. I liked what they did to the house and how they respected the original materials. Using posts from the old barn to case door openings as well as building part of the 9 ft island. I liked the ceiling, opening it up, and leaving the wood raw. Luv'ed the granite steps in the front and side entrances. The landscaping was minimal but graces the style of the farmhouse. The chicken wallpaper in the chicken coop is priceless. I would have liked to have seen the upstairs as well. The bathroom in this house is the proper way to use irregular/handmade subway tile, Leanne Ford needs to take note as well as how the wood elements are incorporated meshing the old and the new. Thanks for letting me know about this show! Loved it! I’m from Massachusetts, I loved everyone’s accent! I especially love that they renovated an old farmhouse. Today so many farms are just leveled and turned into residential developments. The renovation was so well done. I loved the chicken coop, with wallpaper!

Interesting enough, I wonder if those brass shelves Nate put in the kitchen is part of a new trend. I watched the latest Architecture Digest with Daveed Diggs and his partner (Alison from the Umbrella Academy) today showcasing their home and they had similar shelves in their kitchen, only they were connected to the ceiling and walls as opposed to the countertops. I've included the video here because they have such an eclectic, wonderful, fun home. I give extra points for the music room under the stairs and the ottoman she had made from a carpet her mom bought her from Peru.

Those brass shelves I don't mind as they are attached to the wall and do not take space on the countertop. I have seen this type of shelf also on Flip or Flop Las Vegas several times.

Farmhouse Fixer Season 1 Episode 2 - A Farmhouse for a Chef - March 10, 2021
A chef and her husband need their farmhouse fixed. Three doors into the home and a poor layout are the problem. However for the amount of work, fix the porch, paint the house, new roof, new kitchen, new hall bath and rework the flow of the foyer it is costing between $150,000 to $180,000. That seems like a really large amount of money for that work I certainly hope they did the entire house for that budget. We are not talking really high end finishes here.
While I didn't particularly like the layout of the house especially the family room as it felt very narrow and the unused dining and living room was big but unused. The before and after are remarkable and I liked the color palette which looked very green gray to me with charcoal colored paint but maybe it was green.
I did wonder why they didn't fix the garage for the amount of money spent? The one side view they showed looked as if the entire wall was sagging and about to come down. I would want my garage fixed and working especially if I lived in the New England area and get massive amounts of snow in the winter.

Hometown - Season 5 Episode - Woodland Wonderland - March 7, 2021 Cute hobbit house. No one has lived in the house for the last 30 years or so? Scary. . I loved this episode and the darling new homeowners. I liked how they incorporate the felled front yard tree into a support post inside. Using a tree from the Pacific Northwest where they were from, to make that live edge table, was very nice. I liked everything they did in that house.

Finally watched the entire episode. This was a 3 bedroom 2 bath 1900 sq ft home and it seems no one has lived in it since 1978 and it shows. I do wonder who had the house, the children or grandchildren of the named owners? Caution to all folks who want to replicate Ben pulling the garage down with your truck. What videos don't show is that the construction crew detached the garage from the main building. If that had not happened Ben would have potentially damaged the house while he tried to pull down the garage. How do I know this? I was watching a flipping show many years ago and the homeowner did this with the deck and structurally damaged his property because he didn't do the prep work. I was upset that it looked as if he damaged the small tree next to the garage. Tree Killer! Initially when I had just glanced at the episode I thought Oh NO they combined bedrooms to create the master suite. On the second look I realized that Erin and Ben had totally flipped the layout of the home and created the master suite out of the old kitchen and dining area. That was a very nice closet. The living space was wonderful and full of the colors the clients liked as well as their hobbit style. That was a nice kitchen and island it looked so comfortable to sit there. I luv'ed the use of colored cabinets they look so much better than brown wood or all white. As a side note to Leanne Ford and using hand made tile in the shower. This episode of Hometown shows how it should be done. Pay attention Leanne and hire the Hometown tile guy. Oh, the kitchen backsplash stone look tile is normally used for floors. mmmm it looked good.

Rock the Block Season 2 Episode 2 - Front Room, Foyer, Powder Room, and Living Room - March 15, 2021
I like the two person team approach. However in this weeks episode I don't think Mike had much of a voice in the design of the front room. The other teams worked well.
The Judge was something Paige from Flip or Flip Nashville. She did a good job as a judge especially her commentary to each of the teams both pro and con.
Team Alison and Mike: The front room or what would be known as the living room in the good old days was turned into the "Burbon Room". I think this was a missed opportunity and I could see Mike was not on board. I liked the color. I liked the casement and corbels. The concept not so much. Least value added I would say. The foyer was nicely done, with a nice chandelier, new double doors, new wrought iron spindles for the stairs. The powder room was nicely done. The living room or what I would call the family room was exquisite. Why do designers never put TVs in these rooms???? Like normal people. The ceiling beams from the kitchen ran into the living room and were a nice touch as were the new French doors.
Team Mike and Mika: Made the front room an office but added a closet and nice barn doors. Nice powder room but no full bathroom downstairs for the potential bedroom/office/front room. New front door, and chandelier, kept it simple and not too much money. The living room became very much a coastal family room with a fireplace, storage, and French door to the deck. Simple ceiling treatment. Nicely done but the least pricey of the four.
Team Nate and Jeremiah: Is there a pricey finish this couple won't use? Marble black and white tiles in the front room and foyer and part of the front porch. Metal and glass French doors, two in the front room, two in the living room and one in the dining room and double black metal and glass doors for the front door. Lots of glass, hope is it double paned and UV resistant for all the sun in the Carolinas. Just a consideration. They made the front room feel like and atrium/sunroom with direct access to the front and side porch. They also opened the wall to the butler's pantry. I could see your self sitting there with the doors open drinking your coffee at the start of the day. It was beautiful and expensive. I almost feel as if there style is too much for the area and for the potential homeowners. They continued that European feel into the living room.
Team David and Tiffany: Went big with color on the stairs, walls, and wallpaper. A new chandelier and front door. They reconfigured the front room into a bedroom and the powder room into a full bathroom. The tile was lovely but you didn't see much of the build during the episode and it did seem a bit cramped fitting all that into the space. They added a mudroom from the garage into the living room but it seemed as if they made the room feel smaller and chopped up.
Paige did describe David and Tiffany's house a "crazy museum", but they won this week's challenge.

I wasn’t blown away by any of the rooms last night...lol. I also want a place for my tv in a family room. Build me a cabinet or something...lol But of course these days people want a huge tv.
David and Tiffany won because of the extra ensuite and mud room . That bathroom and closet must have been small. Did we even see the finished closet? A downstairs bedroom is a good thing if someone gets sick and can’t do those stairs. That being said their family room ended up really small and choppy. Not liking the dark colours either . Maybe I would have like the dark peacock paper without that art work . Too busy for me.
Alison and Mike...loved the spindles on the stairs. Did not like the green on the shelves and this gold horns. But would love a home office. They sure like those scroll things. I did love the beams going right to the kitchen and the doors out to the deck. The fire looked lonely on the wall. The staging in the room was off to me.
Nate and Jeremiah...loved the black and white floor it is classic. They have a lot of double doors in their house. I think I would wonder what to do with that room if I bought that house. Really didn’t like the old looking fireplace either odd in a new house. That also goes for the sink in the powder room. I thought it was ugly. I guess I have no style..lol
Brian and Mika....liked that they brought the white cabinets into the family room from the kitchen. I think I would want a mantle if I had a fireplace ,where do I hang my stockings....I guess I do like Nate’s fireplace...lol.
Was there a coat closet anywhere in that hall? I prefer a cabinet in the powder room we took our petastall sink out and have a matching cabinet from the kitchen. I can put a whole package of Kleenex from Costco under there and still have room for cleaning stuff in the doors and a tall drawer for a lot of toilet paper and extra towels in there.

I know you always need a coat closet. In the house I lived growing up the downstairs powder room was a good size and had a full cabinet for storage of stuff. My mother would do her hair and makeup there. The under sink cabinet holds toilet paper, cleaner, hair dryers etc... I hate pedestal sinks because they don't have storage. With 5 people in the house and only one full bathroom the powder room has to do double even triple duty. I switched out my powder room pedestal sink in my current home with a half round cabinet and I luv it.

Farmhouse Fixer Season 1 Episode 3 - Third Generation Farmhouse - March 17, 2021
An 1873 house in the town of Ipswich, MA. The couple that owns it bought it from the husbands grandfather. OK my main beef is the cost of the renovation. You redid the first floor and are charging $200,000 to $215,000. For that amount the entire house should be done. Hilary Farr of Love It or List It would go nuts over that kind of budget as would any of the other home improvement designers on HGTV.
I did wish they used the darker gray on the body of the house it would have looked great. Luv'ed the teal door and what they did in the front porch. Luv'ed the interior color palette of light blue, a light aqua, and there were dark teal accents. At first I was a little puzzled at the color palette but it worked so well in the different variations the designer used. In the house it was amazing how removing one wall changed the entire first floor. Luv'ed the banquette seating. The entire first floor felt light, fresh and airy while respecting the traditional architecture.
I do like the nod to farm life and that the wife wanted to keep bees and that Jon's mom gave the background on beekeeping.

Rehab Addict Rescue - the 8 episode run of Nicole Curtis's series has concluded it's 8 episode run. I quiet enjoyed it although at time Nicole can be rather frenetic and too full of nervous energy. I did luv the Indian Village home she helped renovate. The city of Detroit has such wonderful homes. I did like that grandma got her own suite.

Home Again With the Fords: The episode starts with Steve saying “Sometimes, when our clients cry after seeing their houses I cry along with them” while Leanne was next to him doing the worm and I’m like Gurl….are you waking and baking already? Anyway, her cousin Alli is moving back to Pittsburg and has a 30k budget to renovate. Leanne and Steve show her a cute finished cottage with a tiny kitchen, dining, and living room on the ground floor. It was a lot bigger upstairs though with 3 roomy bedrooms and a retro bath. Leanne talks about turning the small kitchen into a wall kitchen with a island in the middle for the sink, knowing down the walls downstairs to make the space bigger, raising the ceiling and exposing the beams in the roof, and rehabbing the bath so it is more of a modern retro. She also mutters something about wallpaper and at that point I had to tune her out because she is messy. During the Reno at some point Steve brings in this beautiful green stove but Leanne says it will “clash with the current theme” and talks about wrapping it in pink vinyl? Also, she painted the walls, then stained them with coffee to get a worn texture.
The end result is…interesting? It looks a lot like an old cottage on the countryside that is worn, yet comforting? Normally I would scream about her painting the white beams in the ceiling white but in this case it complemented the coffee-stained walls, and I have to admit the pink stove looked really good. Not a fan of the wallpaper in the master bedroom, but she was smart enough to only use it on one wall, and another wall was painted grout and plaster on it which was kinda rough but looked very homey. The bathroom was great; she used a stencil to paint an olive green pattern all over the part of the wall that did not have tile, and the whole room honored the retro ness of the old look, yet looked fresh and new. Leanne used her usual “white, black, wood, taupe” themes but had oops of color from the stove and plants that were liberally speed around the cottage. Overall, this was one of her better looks.
Rock the Block: Hands down, I really loved Nate and Jeremiah's overall look; it was just so lux, yet airy! Loved all the double doors and the checked floors. I even loved that fireplace and the crazy stone sink in the powder room. I had reservations about Alison and Mike's smoking room but the end result was marvelous; I don't smoke (cigarettes) anymore, but if I did I would love to cuddle up in that room with a smoke, a stiff drink, and a good book. I didn't like David and Tiffany's wallpaper but I liked everything else; the idea of a mother in laws suite on the first floor was great, plus I enjoyed how they furnished and accessorized the living room. Brian ans Mika's look was...strangely bare? I'm rooting for them for next week.

Woke up to this posting from Luke Caldwell on the Timber and Love Instagram. I hope by "summer" he means "June" because I'm really looking forward to the new show. It's going to be similar to "Home Again With the Fords" except they will be working with Boise families who have outgrown their homes and need a lift.

Please NEVER compare the Fords with any other show on HGTV. The Fords are a mess and Luke is not. The Fords are a minus 10 and Luke and his partner are a ten plus. I would go on but my mind is burned out with the thought of comparing anyone with the Fords. I think I am going to be ill.

LOL!
I meant "similar to" in the sense that they both work with homeowners in their hometowns who want a renovation; in the case of the Fords it's people who have moved back to Philly after being away for a long time/inherited a relatives house there while Luke and Clint's show is mostly families who have outgrown their homes in Boise and need a reno to make it workable again.

Rock the Block...
David and Tiffany: Again with the wall paper . Didn’t like it than they put stuff all over it . I know they needed the yellow banana picture but the placement was weird. Sad walk-in closet too. I would have liked a bigger closet than a sitting room. Not into black bathrooms either I would get tired of the colour and how do you change that easy.
Nate and Jeremiah: I agreed with the judges , the curtains made the room small. The closet looked like storage shelves instead of for clothes. They made a line closet but that shelf was small in there, should have been wall to wall. The bathroom was ok. They kept with the old feel that didn’t match the bedroom. Oh and the light the judges liked in the bedroom looked like a big tooth...lol
Brian and Mika: again agree with the judges need other taps in the shower , don’t like the rain shower heads. Really missed the window in there too. Not sure why people need huge bathrooms . I liked there closet and laundry room I would love all those cabinets in mine. The bedroom was ok but wasn’t my favourite, wished they made it softer looking.
Mike and Alison: loved theirs and they deserved the win. I wasn’t over the moon on the bathroom but it was ok . Loved the his hers closets. That was a dream hers closet right there. I’m guessing there laundry room now is basic washer dryer in the closet but I would be ok with that. The other couple stole from the bedroom would rather have space there but we will see.
Mika really had a break down that they didn’t win. I guess they don’t get to see the other ones house until the end?

Rock the Block - Season 2 Episode 3 - Main Bedroom and Master Bathroom - March 22, 2021
David and Tiffany - Closet - too small for a master suite. Why would you put doors on a closet component that is already behind a door? Makes no sense.
Wallpaper - not my favorite but I thought they totally ruined the look by installing a cheap white shelf to hold little trinkets. How the heck can you display anything against such loud, bold wallpaper. The shelfing unit ruined the look of the wallpaper. The headboard was also less then impressive, almost an afterthought.
Initially I liked there bathroom, the tile is impressive. I didn't like the inside shape of the bathtub. It didn't look comfortable and how do you lean back and relax in that.
Do agree with Egypt the size of the vanity was underwhelming. But at least the couple had multiple shower heads.
While I like color and appreciate what Tiffany and David are doing, it is getting to be too much. I want my home to be a sanctuary, calm and refreshing, not screaming color and pattern and giving me a headache.
I didn't particularly like the sitting room it seemed a waste of space and I would rather have a larger closet.
Mika and Brian - cool, spare, almost sterile. Liked the closet, liked the door to the laundry, liked the laundry room, the bathroom looked impressive, the vanity nice and big, the tub looked comfortable, the tile was nice, the double walkin shower looked great but if you are going to spend that much money go the distance and add multiple shower sprays, that was a HUGE MISS. Overall the bathroom, closet, and laundry, were good and the master bedroom seemed an after thought.
Nate and Jeremiah - bathroom on first look was impressive but there was no hand held shower wand and in the high end bathroom there should be. It looked good. I hate crappy distressed furniture and the linen closet looked as if it was made of rotten wood.
Did not like the curtain wall behind the bed.
The headboard looked too high for the mattresses and it showed. Didn't like the color palette, bed linens looked cheap.
The closet storage system used in the walk in closet and other storage area looked cheap and as if it would wall over. YUCK!
Alison and Mike - I don't think this is an equal partnership. I like them as a team but there might be some dominance issues.
Alison is desperate for a win.
The woman knows how to design and each room had an impact. Let's face it the ombre tile was stunning. Overall as a master suite the room had all the component parts that worked well together. I luv'ed the bathroom and the closets and the antique doors.

Alison and Mike deserved that win, the bathroom tile was gorgeous. I don't know what poor soul had to grout all that, in ombre no less - but they did a fantastic job. I hate grouting. The reclaimed wood wall/ceiling and closets were really nice, too. Hated David and Tiffany's wallpaper, and that wall o' curtains Nate and Jeremiah used. Mika and Brian had a nice laundry room and decent but not terribly exciting bedroom. But they really blew it with the lack of shower heads on the wall. I love top rainfall shower heads, but if I don't want to wash my hair, those make it really hard if that's all there is. Big miss.

Hometown: One of the producers of the show finally decided to put down roots in Laurel and buy a place. She decided on this beautiful Southern Gothic Victorian with wonderful spindles all around the porch and good bones inside. Ben and Erin painted the house a nice coral color outside and left the spindles white. The dining room already was a nice space with a beautiful antique glass window and fireplace so they just painted it a buttercup yellow and added really nice wood furnishings and a table. The rooms in this house are HUGE, and in the office area there was enough room for a couch and table to work at as well as a lovely bookshelf. Erin comissioned a glass blower to make a beautiful glass tortoise because the homeowner's mom loved them, and it sat on a special light on the desk that made it glow. The bedroom was also huge with light green, coral, and gray tones that complemented each other, and Ben made this tall jewelry box from the wood from the old front door that was fabulous. The ensuite...was so rich and fab looking, with rectangle stained glass windows above the sinks, a nice big tub, and I loved that shower especially; it was big enough for two people and had a built in seat so you could shave your legs/put on cream/scrub your feet, etc.
The kitchen was teal and white with a wonderful painting of a tortoise on the wall and a grayish, scratchy backsplash. They also renovated the pool in the backyard. The homeowner was so thrilled with the house she burst into tears. Overall, they did a wonderful job.

I agree, Kao. I loved everything and was even surprised that I liked the exterior house color. I wasn't sure that I would. The glass blown turtle and jewelry box ( similar to her late mom's) and with her nickname "Priss Pot" engraved on a name plate, were nice touches and a nod to her mom. My only quibble was I didn't think the yard and pool area were quite spiffy enough to be that vacation oasis she wanted.

Spot on with the boring bedroom. Spot on with the missing shower heads. Seriously that was a lovely bathroom but if you make a huge walk in shower and no extra shower heads you just wasted all the time, labor, and money that went into that shower. Why make it that big at all. Huge miss. That shower done correctly may have given them the win.

Hometown Season 5 Episode 10 - Retreat Yourself - March 21, 2021
Well the same thing happened on Fixer Upper, the producer decided to buy a home in Waco and the following year Chip and Joanna had their last season.
No I don't think that will happen on Hometown, this show has been so good for Laurel that it will continue for a while.
I do hope everyone is OK in Mississippi as they have had some tornadoes and massive rains this past week.
As for the episode:
Luv'ed the little jokes they were playing on their boss, like the color of the house. I must admit coral then pumpkin was not my first choice but it ended up looking good.
Nice to see a bit of how the show is filmed.
Problems with the front porch railing. They never added extra spindles, the owner's dog could squeeze through any of those porch rails. I was surprised they did not correct that.
It was nice to see how effective a good cleaning, fresh paint, new light fixtures, and furniture can totally transform both the dining room and master bedroom. I was surprised they did not touch the dining room fireplace as both rooms looked fresh and inviting.
The master bathroom was nice. Luv'ed how you can keep the footprint and save on plumbing costs yet make the entire room look different. Erin kept the palette simple, white, grey, and black and let the materials speak for themselves. That shower looked wonderful. It had a nice bench, the tile looked luxurious, and notice the shower heads. There was a rain head on one side of the shower and a regular shower head and wand on the other. (Yes, this is a shout out to Mika and Brian on Season 2 of Rock the Block who blew the master bathroom competition by not including extra shower heads.)
Kitchen was nice. Erin and Ben know how to reorganize a kitchen. It is amazing how closing off a wall and opening another affects the flow of a kitchen. Also for such a large kitchen you would think it would not have problems. I luv'ed the white upper cabinets and lower blue/teal colored ones. I personally do not like a sink or stove top in an island but it was a big island and I liked the seating capacity as well as the furniture type legs. Again I am not a fan of square stacked tile, in fact I may hate it, however the tile Erin picked and how she had it set to look like a basketweave did look nice.
I was surprised that the backyard was not updated more, it looked like an afterthought and not a spa retreat. The house was over 3000 sq ft and had 3 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms which I realized had all be redone, I just wish they would show that, but that would explain why they didn't have that much money to spend on the backyard spa area.
It does seem though while property is always a good investment, in small towns like Laurel it does comes across that many of these homes have if not been abandoned, because of the economy and people going to big towns to work, and lack of population that it takes years for them to sell.

Farmhouse Fixer - A Coastal Farm - March 24, 2021
I absolutely do not understand the budgets on these renovations. This was going to be around $260,000 to $280,000 not including design fees. What I totally do not understand is that this was a one bathroom house before and after the renovation. Why? I hope they did the basement. Then there were the HORRIBLE small doors to small closet space. That made no sense. Both homeowners were overweight and no way would they squeeze into their closets.
No powder room on the main floor. They could have done it.
Overall I did like the coastal theme and they didn't do the standard fishing buoys, nets, anchors, seagulls, thankfully. You could see they basically rebuilt the house, which if they were doing that really makes no sense as to why additional bathrooms were not configured.
I wished the homeowner was more adventurous with the house color. The soft blue did look good as did removing the shutters.
Instead of putting a raised beds put in another bathroom.

Thanks again Bearcata for interesting tidbits! I think the cost of renovation might be because: - it’s Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Tradesmen are very expensive. - cost of lumber has increased a lot recently. I know a couple people who were ready to build/ renovate but had to delay their plans due to lumber costs.
