It's like any other competition show. Some people are great at home, and may even practice their skills using the time limits that the show uses. But once they get there and have to deal with the cameras and the producers and the other personalities in the competition, they can't get out of their own heads enough to excel. This is true. I watched Jamie on Extra Slice and his chocolate biscuits were very pretty and tasted great apparently, unlike those he made in the tent. Nerves, timelines, ovens different than the ones bakers are used to...all can play a role. I still think Jamie is a relatively weak baker overall/in comparison but he was a good sport. Give him a few years an he might be fantastic. I could barely cook a pop tart at the age.

Caught up tonight with my friend. I figured the Technical would be like those Fig Newtons that my parents like, but these were more round, so that was new to me. Some of the creations tonight looked utterly delightful too. Alice definitely earned Star Baker, she did well in all three rounds and her sheep was beyond adorable. Rosie the veterinarian surprised me too, she gave me that kind of vibe of "won't stand out much and will leave early", but she's been doing very well.
It was really between Jamie and Amelia after three rounds, and for a moment i thought they'd keep him due to his Showstopper tasting good. No doubt he's talented, but he did seem way over his head, he almost always had issues with timing, but at least he was a good sport about his elimination. Hopefully Amelia can pull herself together and show what she can really do.
My friend and I were worried for Helena after the first two rounds (we both thought that had she gone for mint rather than matcha green tea for her Signature, her witch fingers might've been better received), since she's become a fast favorite of ours, so we breathed a huge sigh of relief upon her presenting her showstopper, because that was an absolute masterpiece, it'll definitely go down as one of the most memorable bakes for me. And it's not just Helena's unabashed love for the spooky that makes me like her, it's also that she also has such a delightful and kind personality, and I'm really enjoying how much she and Noel are getting along, it's so nice to see he's found a kindred goth spirit in the tent. That's twice in a row that she has issues in the first two rounds but then secures her spot for next week with a fabulous showstopper, so I really hope she can get stronger from here on out and show us more of her spooky bakes.

He came back for the Holiday show and won so even if Helena doesn't win this I hope she comes back for the holidays.

She needs to get on one of the Halloween shows on Food Network.

She would be perfect for the Halloween Baking Championship but I think you have to be from the U.S. in order to be on the show. Then again, they did get that woman from South America to rig the Christmas Gingerbread competition last year so I'm sure if they really wanted her they could make an exception.

I remember them having a Canadian or two on one of the seasonal baking shows beforehand. But, yeah, she’d probably have to get recruited by Food Network and they would have to sort out a visa.

Series 10 Episode 2: Biscuits Baker | Signature | Technical | Showstopper | | (12 Decorated Chocolate Biscuit Bars) | (12 Fig Rolls) | (3D Biscuit Sculpture) | Alice | Honeycomb Peanut Mallow Bars | 1st | Chocolate and Coconut New Zealand Lamb | Amelia | Pistachio, Almond & Raisin Nougat Biscuit Bars | 9th | Swimming with Dolphins | David | Coco-nutty Chocolate Bars | 2nd | Wedding Spray | Helena | Wicked Witch Fingers | 12th | Caught in a Spider's Web | Henry | Coffee, Cardamom & Hazelnut Bars | 6th | Chapel Organ | Jamie | Cherry Caramel Shortbread Biscuit Bars | 11th | Biscuit Guitar | Michael | Lemon & Rosemary Biscuit Bars | 4th | Hamish the Highland Cow | Michelle | Bakewell Bars | 8th | Dewi y Ddraig Gymraeg - Dewi the Welsh Dragon | Phil | Orange, Cranberry & White Chocolate Fudge Bars | 3rd | Tina the Tortoise | Priya | Ruby Barfi Biscuit Bars | 7th | The Beast of Rocky Mountain | Rosie | Virgin Mojito Biscuit Bars | 5th | My Favourite Chicken - A Celebration of Legs | Steph | Chocolate, Caramel Macchiato Biscuit Bars | 10th | Ginger the Cat |
Alice was Star Baker. Jaime was eliminated. Oh my Gosh luv'ed Rosie's My Favourite Chicken Showstopper it truly was a Show Stopper. Alice's New Zealand Lamb was adorable. Helena's Spider, Steph's Ginger Cat, and Phil's Tortoise were also good. Jaime's quitar was too simplistic. I think he make have good overall skills he just does not have the finise the other bakers do. Jaime also had two bad weeks in a row.

This most recent episode, Bread Week, was a bit odd, lots of ups and downs for most of the bakers. Love Helena's continued use of spooky themes. Knew Amelia would be eliminated, she did decently in Cake Week but afterwards it seems her nerves got the better of her and she just could never recover, so that's a bummer. I admit I'm surprised and confused that Michael won Star Baker, as he was definitely up high, but I feel Steph did overall better than him, what with placing higher in the Technical and her Showstopper not having the tear-up flaws like Michael's did. I think it's another time where Paul's favoritism is showing, as he did rave about Michael's Signature bread, wouldn't surprise me if he won Star Baker just because of that.

Michael and Steph were both in the top half for technical so not that far apart there (three places apart - she did not win the technical which is important to note I think. She did do better than him but he didn’t do badly per se, he was middling). They both did well in the showstopper (I think his was somewhat better, or at least it was more memorable for me. I know hers was flowers but I don’t even remember what they looked like, or tasted like. His had a tear in one of the loaves but the others were good, and tasted good as I recall.) His signature was far and away the best, and Paul said it was one of the best breads he’s had in a while. And he was still raving about it on the Extra Slice episode. Based on the above I expected Michael to win. Paul obviously really loved his signature bread so I am sure that helped. But if Michael had done badly on the next two challenges I don’t think the signature would have been enough for him to win the week.
I like Steph, though, so hope she does well this week. Though I am not sure what “dairy week” will entail.

Series 10 Episode 3: Bread Baker | Signature | Technical | Showstopper | | (Tear & Share Loaf) | (8 White Burger Baps & 4 Veggie Burgers) | (Decorative Loaf Display) | Alice | Baklava Tear & Share | 7th | Global Bread | Amelia | Chorizo Brunch Tear & Share | 11th | Caterpillar Transformation | David | Cinnamon Swirl Tear & Share | 2nd | Trio of African Masks | Helena | Frosted Cinnamon and Pecan Tear & Share | 8th | Herb Garden | Henry | Chicken and Pesto Tear & Share | 1st | Chapel Organ | Michael | Keralan Star Bread Tear & Share | 6th | Mediterranean Camp Fire | Michelle | Noson Gaws (Cheese Night) Tear & Share | 5th | Garrd Ni (Our Garden) | Phil | Pancetta and Cheese Focaccia Tear & Share | 10th | Winner's Wreath | Priya | Smokey Jalapeño Tear & Share | 4th | Bird Boules | Rosie | Chilli and Manchego Tear & Share | 9th | Bread Safari | Steph | Sun-Dried Tomato and Pesto Star Tear & Share | 3rd | Hand-Tied Bouquet of Flowers |
Michael is Star Baker. Amelia is eliminated. What I found a bit odd in this episode is the lack of love for bread, the lack of passion for making bread. In previous seasons the bakers all seemed thrilled about baking bread, the joy just oozed out of their pores. This season the attitude is more bread, lets just check it over with and get back to baking. I found the scouring technique interesting especially if there were different colored layers in the bread loaf. Not impressed with many of the showstoppers. Remember the good old days of Paul's lion bread sculpture during season 6?

It seemed like everyone made more of an effort this week. The tearaways for the Signature Bake was especially good because a lot of the bakes. were savory and really interesting combinations that looked delicious. Two of the bakers (Helena and David) opted for American style Cinnamon rolls which was very interesting. I thought that the Technical was rather unfair as they got graded on the Veggie Burgers as well as the bread and this is a baking show. The Showstopper intrigued me because some of the bakers were able to get different colors/patterns from the razor slashes they made in the bread but the only ones that really stuck out to me was the Safari and the African Masks. Poor Amelia tried but ultimately wasn't able to get it together.

They both nailed the flavors in the Signature round, but Michael's was clearly the more flavorful of the two and Steph's tear-away was also overbaked. She did better in the Technical and both again nailed the flavors in the Showstopper, though Michael did have issues with presentations. It sounds very neck and neck but looks like flavor won the day for Michael. I too am very curious about what the challenges will be for Dairy Week. Probably some super cheesy bake, or one where a lot of milk is needed. So many possibilities.

Steph won this week so yay. I continue to love Helena. Everyone is using their fancy curved moulds and there she is making a ghost. And I love her and Noel’s little interactions. Speaking of questionable ousters I thought Priya would be ousted this week. Her showstopper was good but not overwhelmingly so. She got praised on her flavours but complaints about the looks of things. And her technical - I mean, they didn’t even want to taste it! And she wasn’t even close to having it completed. Overall I found dairy week rather meh. On to 20s week.

Strange week. I agree ccl in that I think the shock over the person leaving was real; I was shocked. Michael or Priya or both should have left. From the deliberation it looked like it would be either one or both of them.
Noel sure had marriage on the mind...first with Helena, then with Sandy. What is his deal? He sounded a bit wistful or even a bit angry at times this episode.
Oh, and don't forget Henry's boring balls. Everyone made fun of those. The one liners (and roasts) are coming from the bakers as well as the staff this season.

I must have missed Noel’s bit on marriage with Sandy. He’s been with his partner for several years and they had a child last year, maybe it is on his mind? I do think he views Helena as a bit of a kindred spirit.
Speaking of Noel, his shirt was doing my head in this week.
Henry’s balls...size does matter to him you know. Lol.

No, this was the worst. Paul has never turned and walked away before this. How were they to get the pastry cups higher when they had to leave room for expansion in the holders? Puff pastry rises, correct? Maybe there was something in the scant recipe that threw them for a loop. I can't remember her name, but one had a total pastry meltdown. Did they not have enough time to refrigerate?

That might have been the most disastrous technical challenge in the show's history. Anyone remember another one that went that badly? I like this cast. The Stroopwafels from a couple of years ago. Everyone's syrupy filling had all turned to gritty sugar and some of them were burnt to boot. Paul and Prue literally had to give out a "Best of the Worst" award because they all were bad.

Watched this episode tonight, and other than the Technical, which instantly reminded me of the stroopwafel fiasco, I thought it was a pretty fun week, and there were some superb Signatures and Showstoppers. As we watched, my friend and I thought that it would definitely be between Michael and Priya, but as soon as we saw Phil's Showstopper be judged, we were stunned in that it seemed like this time the Showstopper would really be a firm deciding factor and that Phil would be ousted, and turns out we were right. Checking it, this is how it went:
Michael's Signature was delicious but it was very messy and broken, he came 7th in the Technical but had a great Showstopper. Priya's Signature looked good but tasted so-so, she came last in Technical, and her Showstopper needed more color but was deemed delicious. Phil's Signature was a little messy and not very flavorful, he came 6th in the Technical and his Showstopper was more simplistic, he stamped out two of his three creations (I remember the judges don't care for stamp-outs, reminds me of Dorret's Showstopper in Biscuit Week of season 6), and he used extracts, which overwhelmed everything and made for unpleasant flavors.
Taking all that into account, I knew Phil would go home. Had he had a good Showstopper, Priya would've been the more likely candidate to go home, but Phil ended up dropping the ball and it cost him.
Just four episodes in and Helena is firmly in my all-time favorite contestants of the series. She's still being very weak in Technical challenges, but that's four episodes in a row where she pulls off a fantastic Showstopper, and said Showstopper combined with her fairy garden cake Showstopper in the first episode showcase that while she may prefer the spooky themed bakes, she can still pull off cute and classy too.

I really enjoyed this week's episode. The bakers are getting more comfortable in the tent and it's showing in their bakes.
The Signature bakes made me really, really hungry, lol. The two limocello cakes turned out great, along with Henry's German cake, Steph's chocolate cake, and Helena's almond Ghost cake was adorable and tasted good too. Poor Michael, but honestly, if you bake a cake 10 times and it only comes out right once that's the Universe's way of telling you to do something else. I was glad it at least tasted really good. I'm wondering if he bothered to oil and flour the pan before putting the cake mix in it would make a difference? Everyone's else's cake was either middling or poor.
Technical: Maids of Honor. Everyone did horribly. Bad Pru...she was also the one who set that Stroopwafel Technical a couple of years ago (with equally horrifying results).
Showstopper: 3 different Mishti Doi (a Bengali dessert). I especially noticed that while the people with Indian heritage (Priya, Michael) or friends (David) made more traditionally Indian Mishti everyone else else for some reason decided to make this dessert as British as possible, and while some of the desserts looked really good it was a bit...offputting. Steph decided to roll the dice and make both Indian AND British Mishti to beat David, while Henry decided for some odd reason to make one of his Mishtis out of ice cream?
Steph earned Star Baker, while Helena, David, and a few others had a relatively good week. Michelle had a rough week but I knew no way would they send her home so it was poor Phil. My vote would have been for Priya except she had a decent Showstopper. So far there's been a different person for Star Baker and I like that; it gets boring when one person dominates. We're going into the 5th week and with the exception of David (who has been above average) I have no clue who the finalists might be.

We're going into the 5th week and with the exception of David (who has been above average) I have no clue who the finalists might be. I agree, one of the thing I'm enjoying most so far is that we haven't had any repeat Star Bakers yet, it's very enjoyable when that happens, makes for a more exciting competition. My friend and I kept getting so frustrated with Henry and his ice cream. The lack of both ice cream machine and blast chiller meant that it would already be a daunting task, but then they showed him opening the freezer so many times, and we kept saying "Stop opening the door, let it sit there and chill as much as possible and get them out when there's only a couple minutes left!" And I agree also on Michael's mishap on the Signature round. One time out of ten is the kind of odds that should make one say "I'll just do something else". There's also the fact that no two ovens work alike, so what works at home may not work at the tent, so that only enhances his bad decision. Next episode is a 20's theme, so I'm curious already what old timey bakes they'll have to do.

Series 10 Episode 4: Dairy Baker | Signature | Technical | Showstopper | | (Cultured Dairy Cake) | (12 Maids of Honour) | (Display of Mishti) | Alice | Leafy Yoghurt Cake | 8th | Afternoon Tea | David | A Kick of Limoncello Cake | 2nd | Flavours of India Mishti | Helena | Ghost Cake | 9th | Ye Olde English Sweet Shoppe Mishti | Henry | Ode to a German Breakfast Cake | 3rd | Seaside Mishti | Michael | Cheesecake Surprise | 7th | Flag of India Mishti | Michelle | Homely Rhubarb Cake | 5th | Home Comforts Mishti | Phil | Trucking Lovely Rose Cake | 6th | A Corner of My Garden Mishti | Priya | Choc-chip Banana Cake | 10th | Flavours of My Childhood Mishti | Rosie | A Good Dose of Limoncello Cake | 4th | Cocktails & Canapés Mishti | Steph | Answer to Everything Cake | 1st | Pink and Pretty Mishti |
Steph is Star Baker. Phil is eliminated. During the signature judging both Paul and Prue were looking at decoration, texture, and taste. These were the top bakes of the signature challenge as both judges had positive comments on decoration, texture and taste/flavor. Henry - "looks great", "delicious" + 3rd + Rosie - "spot on", "light and airy", "lemon comes thru" + 4th + Helena - "lovely color", "it's good" + 9th + David - "neat", "beautiful structure", "light", "fantastic", "love it" + 2nd + Steph - "lovely light sponge", "rich", "well done" + 1st + Then came the rest of the bakers: Phil - the decoration was "messy" and "disappointing", the texture was good, the rose "flavor not strong" + 6th + Alice - "really pretty", "texture is good", "cake is bland" + 8th + Priya - "decorating is good", "outside tough" (talking about the chocolate part), "banana bread is good" + 10th + Michelle - "looks good", texture "not as loose and open", "it's claggy" + 5th + Michael - "looks a mess" (the cake cracked & decorations were poor), "tastes great" + 7th + After the signature Phil, Michelle, Michael & maybe Priya are at the bottom. Table discussion: Top: Steph, David, Henry Bottom: everyone else If you combine the signature and technical challenges Steph, David, Henry, and Rosie are doing well, the rest not so well. Showstopper: Steph - "clever with the flavor", "you have done well" David - "very neat, very precise, very accurate", "excellent" Alice - "look great", "very pleasant", "thank you, well done" Helena - "love the look", "lemon - good" Rosie - "looks good, colors match", "really delicious", "Rosie, be proud of yourself" Michelle - "look nice, good color", Paul does not like the rice pudding *one hitHenry - "didn't finish", "bit melted", "nice vanilla", "texture is wrong", "tastes OK" **two hitsMichael - "stylish", "really delicious", "lemon done well" Priya - "more color", "flavors good" *is more color a hit?Phil - "very colorful", "tastes slightly fake", "overboard with flavors", "pretty samey" **two hits, didn't like flavors, or design
Table discussion: Star Baker is between Steph and David Elimination is between Michael and Priya and Phil My take on the 5 potential eliminated: Name | Signature | Technical | Showstopper | Alice | tastes bland | 8th | all positive comments | Michael | looks a mess | 7th | all positive comments | Michelle | texture not loose and open, tastes claggy | 5th | Paul did not like the rice pudding | Phil | decoration disappointing, flavor not strong | 6th | tastes slightly fake, overboard with flavors, pretty samey (design) | Priya | tough outside (the chocolate part) | 10th | more color in the food |
Alice saved herself with her showstopper. Michael saved himself with his showstopper. Michelle saved herself with her showstopper. I think it came down to Phil and Priya for elimination. At first watch I didn't think Phil would go home, he seemed middle of the pack and I liked his showstopper but on second look and creating a chart. After the technical I think Phil was ahead of Priya but Phils simple showstopper design and poor flavors in addition to his poor decoration and poor flavor on the signature bake did him in.

When none of the signature bakes can be called good, it means they didn't give enough directions. I think it's stupid to give them so little to go on they none of them can do well. Paul can walk away all he wants, it's their own fault.
I too was yelling at my TV to quit opening the freezer. Letting in that warm air was never going to help them freeze. I also told my daughter that after 5 times of something not working out at home it was time to pick something else. She said she would have started over after 3 times. 90% failure rate is not good odds in your favor.
