I don't mind the younger cast this year, partly because they're all so adorable. They have a different, slightly looser attitude to the competition, but it's with a sense of fun and wonder. And I was happy with the first elimination. When in doubt, always get rid of the man-bun.

I was surprised Dan went before Jaime (the really young kid who had a twin).

Yeah, I think Jamie was the more obvious ouster. I wonder if his youth helped him there, if they felt sorrier for him as he was young and thought he should get a second chance.
I am not opposed to young contestants (some of them have been favourites, like Martha) but I do think they have skewed too much to the young side this go round. I like more varied contestants age-wise.
I have never heard of angel slices. They looked like they should be called neopolitan slices or something. Fruit cake...meh. I did like the last challenge. Lot of nice looking bakes, especially the treasure chest and the fairy ones.
Too many contestants yet for favourites. Maybe the vet and the teacher and the student at Durham.
Also, loved Noel’s sweater.

I don't have any faves yet but I kinda like the Halloweeny lady That's definitely the impression I got, which is why I was angry. He should have went home.

Dan went first because his signature bake was raw in the middle, his technical was rubbery and he placed ninth. When it came to his Showstopper, a pirate island cake, lacked the promised passion fruit curd.
Jamie's signature was deemed delicious, though he was last in technical and his puppy dog Showstopper was too sweet...though he did have the promised salted caramel and a surprise biscuit treat in the center.
When in doubt, raw goes home; if I remember correctly from previous shows.
Next week it will probably be Jamie or the veterinarian.
Ah, Angel Food cake. That was always the birthday cake of my childhood (done in a tube pan). They've done portioned cake before and called it slices, though I have never seen Angel Food dyed different colors. In the end, it is always about the sponge, no matter the hue.
My childhood fantasy cake would have been chocolate with chocolate frosting covered in sugar plum fairies, or ballet dancers dressed as sugar plum fairies.
I cracked up when the clash of the accents happened and Paul thought one baker said "furry" rather than "fairy".

So I stayed up until 2am to watch and...yeah. :/ If you're used to watching GBBO the age thing is glaring. With the exception of 2 bakers EVERYONE is early to mid-twenties. Channel 4 tends to cater to younger viewers and I really hope they didn't do this on purpose to match their demographic. While I enjoyed some of the bakes I'm pretty neutral on the bakers (unlike last season when I liked quite a few off the bat). I liked who they made Star Baker but was furious over who they sent home, especially since there was another baker that did much worse (came in dead last for the technical and had a rubbery, nasty cake for the showstopper) that somehow got a pass. And yes, it was an older contestant that got the chop. Really disgusted right now and think I'll wait until Friday afternoon to watch for now on.
*edit* Okay, read the recap from The Independent and there's a few thirty year olds and one 40-something and a 50 year old, but the majority of the bakers are early to mid twenties. So it's not as bad as I initially though, but still bad.
I really thought he was going to go first. So far I'm not in love with anyone but I'll see how it goes.

Dan Chambers was eliminated. Michelle Evans-Fecci was Star Baker. Comments: The bakers seemed nervous. Prue was wickedly cruel with her choice of technical challenge. Was not that impressed with the quality of baking, I think due to massive time management and nerves none of the bakes were completed and decorated as they could have been. I think Jaime could be in trouble as he had to redo all his bakes, and the one who bakes vegan. Two of my co-workers have been bringing in brownies and cakes that are vegan. Stodgy, thick, sawdust are good adjectives to describe the bakes. I do appreciate the diversity that normally composes the bakers in this series, and was rather surprised at the lack of age range. Well, yes there is a 40 yr old and a 56 yr old it is that normally there are more folks representative of life and experience.

My friend and I caught it during the weekend and liked it, especially the Showstopper challenge and all the cool cakes, our personal favorite being Helena's stunning fairy garden cake, we found it to be the prettiest. While it's too early to pick favorites, we booth took an instant liking to Helena due to her unabashed love for Halloween and spooky stuff. Finally there's a goth in the tent, and we hope she can bring it with some fun spooky themed bakes.
My friend and I didn't much mind that this is mostly a relatively young cast, namely because nobody annoys us. Not yet anyway, as we were both pretty ticked off when last year's winner was announced. We are a bit wary that Jamie could get annoying, he's a bit too hyena-like, laughs a lot, but so far we don't mind him. We were surprised at first that he stayed and Dan got eliminated, but then we remembered that he did have a very good Signature round and Dan was bad in the first two rounds and middle ground in the Showstopper, so it ultimately did make sense.
And I feel weird asking this, but am I and my friend the only ones whose minds went to a dirty place when Phil was... well, "fondling" his Showstopper to get the cone shape? Honestly, we burst out laughing so bad, the way the camera focused on it for a bit longer than was necessary.

Oh, thank goodness. Now I don't feel so bad that we had a Beavis & Butt-Head moment. It was such an unusual moment for the very family friendly Bake Off. And I'm so looking forward to this next episode, the preview showed what seemed to be a spider's nest with a big spider, eggs and cobwebs made of spun sugar, and it's clearly Helena's Signature or Showstopper. It looks awesome and I hope she nailed it.

My daughter and I also miss Mary, Mel and Sue. Sandi and Noel are fine. Their off-the-cuff remarks are much funnier when they are reacting to the contestants, than their scripted non-funny lines. I don't mind Prue's baking knowledge but I don't like that she's more harsh than Mary. Mary's sweetness was such a good counterbalance to Paul's meanness. It's not that Mary didn't criticize them; it's that she was so sweet with her delivery.

I'm really loving Noel's sweaters this season. This week he wore one that looked like Sandy with elf ears! The lack of experience in the tent is really beginning to show as several people can't seem to get it together. This week's theme was biscuits. The signature bake was to make decorated chocolate biscuit bars. While one person in particular made a wonderful biscuit bar that Prue called "exquisite" and some others followed with good showings, there were a lot of broken bars, runny chocolate, and unset bars under the tent. Technical bake: Make 12 fig rolls. Poor Helena ended up only making 11, while someone else put an egg gloss on theirs (which wasn't necessary and gave Paul fits). There were an awful amount of smashed looking fig rolls, or those that had the wrong texture but there was two people who was easily heads above all the others. Showstopper: 3D biscuit sculpture. At this point it seemed like people stopped playing in the tent and actually started producing good things. The chicken, sheep, flowers, dragons (from two separate bakers) and spider in a egg were highlights, while others were a bit of a disappointment either in looks or taste. Star Baker was well-deserved. The ousted baker IMO had no business being on the show in the first place, so no loss there. Next is bread week, and considering how some of these folks are struggling I can't begin to guess what's going to happen.

With all the people applying every year, it is strange that they have such a number of very unprepared bakers....maybe the push toward youth?

Post by Kao on Sept 6, 2019 15:31:55 GMT
Well, according to an online source Channel 4 is claiming that "a record amount of young people applied this year!" Which may or may not be true but that channel slants young and I can see them trying a younger contestant pool to attract more viewers. What they probably didn't count on was the backlash; one of the nice things about GBBO was the fact that you had all of these people from wildly varying demographics which really represented a cross-section of the U.K. And even with this young batch I'm not seeing any Marthas or Liams (who ironically also had a biscuit bar as one of the signature bakes in his season that he aced) or Julias or Benjiminas or Rubys. So far, there's a couple who are consistently good and the rest are up and down. Maybe this was one of the reasons why they supposedly dumbed down the bakes this year because they felt Prue and Paul were assigning bakes that were too hard?

Interesting points, Kao, I'll be interested to see how this plays out. I was expecting a bad week for the vet, but she showed up in the showstopper round with her chicken. Jaime (who left) managed to have somewhat good bakes, but his decorating and timings were horrible.
I'm enjoying the banter more this year, but will it make up for lack of experience and creativity?

Alice was great this week, wanted to try her first biscuit and I loved her sheep. Also loved Rosie’s hen. I’m glad Helena had a good showstopper as I am enjoying her as a contestant. The showstopper challenge did seem the most successful this week.
Jamie seems like a nice person but he seems really new to baking based on his tent bakes. Maybe should have applied a couple of years from now.

Helena is just fun to see what she comes up with. The rest of the bakers doesn't seen to be that good as we have seen on the series before. Jamie was really in over his head.

It's like any other competition show. Some people are great at home, and may even practice their skills using the time limits that the show uses. But once they get there and have to deal with the cameras and the producers and the other personalities in the competition, they can't get out of their own heads enough to excel.

I watched Jamie on Extra Slice and his chocolate biscuits were very pretty and tasted great apparently, unlike those he made in the tent. Nerves, timelines, ovens different than the ones bakers are used to...all can play a role. I still think Jamie is a relatively weak baker overall/in comparison but he was a good sport.
