I got to watch the UK premiere from Tuesday, and I say . There are no spoilers below, but I'll put my thoughts in spoiler tags in case people want to watch on Friday with no background info: {Bake Off Thoughts}They've managed to make it classic Bake Off in spite of filming in a bubble. They do make mention of it, but once they do, they kick off as if it's any other season, and you wouldn't know the difference.
Matt Lucas is funny, he and Noel play off each other well. It's less cutesy, no more repetitive 'tiny Sandy in a sack' jokes. Nobody will ever be better then Mel and Sue for me, but so far I think Matt was a good 'new flavor' to add to the mix.
The bakers themselves are fine. A lot of them have senses of humor, overall they feel like a slightly more subdued bunch than the last couple of years. We'll see what several weeks in isolation does to their demeanors in future episodes...

I am so excited I just noticed it on Netflix last night. Now I have something for Friday nights.

I think you all have talked me into watching this. I envy anyone who hasn't watched the show before, and gets to watch it all from the beginning and it's all new...

I think you all have talked me into watching this. Oh you need to start at the very beginning. I still miss Mary Berry.

New show - one episode down. So far I prefer Sandi over new guy, but the tent looked the same set in a verdant rolling landscape on estate lands with the estate house in the distance.
One thing I do wonder about though, how do they practice bake if they don't go home between shows Are they set up in a suites type hotel with a kitchen set up?
Enjoyed seeing the age mix this go around.
Oh, Paul told Prue in the judging tent that he had never eaten pineapple upside down cake before - but he had...Darn, can't remember the season, but it was a first episode cake and the man who made it thought it was too simple, but it earned him high praise from Paul.

One thing I do wonder about though, how do they practice bake if they don't go home between shows Are they set up in a suites type hotel with a kitchen set up? I read an article that said they filmed an episode in 2 days, then took 2 days break for the bakers to practice bake. They set up mini-kitchens for each of them in the place they were staying. They basically switched to how the American version is filmed. The UK version normally films on weekends, and the bakers go home and practice and live their lives all week.

I laughed so hard seeing some of those cake busts. The Lupita and Freddy Mercury busts were especially heinous. I was not in agreement over who went home so I was very glad Paul explained exactly why that individual got the chop. I like the new guy so far; he seems very engaged with the bakers and seems really happy to be there.

I don't think I "caught" it . . . and I don't think you and I are the only ones who were shocked at the elimination. Some of the others who were low on the chopping block seemed surprised, too. I absolutely LOVED Matt Lucas. Self-deprecating humor without making the show all about himself. I literally laughed out loud several times. Also: When we watched it early yesterday (Friday) morning, the opening was different. Folks in Britain had been treated to an opening of Matt impersonating the British Prime Minister, but that was not on the Netflix episode yesterday. It's there today - and quite funny!

Okay, I love this show. I'll have to work on the previous seasons in between new episodes of this one. AZChristian I remember Paul saying that person was eliminated because of overbaking and over-flavoring.

I wasn't surprised by who got eliminated because I thought she was near the bottom every time. But, yes, Paul's explanation made sense. So far I like the new host. Regarding practicing, I thought they must be doing the show the same way they do for the American version. Several of those showstopper cakes seemed like they belonged on Nailed It, not GBBS!

That is what I like about it. When you fail, you really fail and shake your head about it. We even had our first accident when most of one baker's technical cakes slid off to the floor. What surprised me was when one of the bust cakes started to slip and slide while they were outside on break, the baker was allowed back into the tent to try and save it - they haven't done that before. I do like that she placed a dowel under the neck portion and claimed he was sleeping.
There was a lot of humor and I'll warm to Matt - it's just I miss Sandi and her shortness right now.

The only thing that saved that other person who was also swirling the drain was the fact that her bust cake was tasty despite looking crazy. I've noticed that when it comes down between looks and taste on this show taste almost always wins.

I thought Paul said that he used to have pineapple upside down cake at school dinners (aka lunches) when he was doing the tasting discussion with Prue? Loving Matt Lucas. Too many bakers to remember everyone’s name right now but Sura is my early favourite. Her devastated look at the judging when she came in first (after accidentally knocking over the other baker’s cakes) when she should have been elated tugged my heartstrings but I also liked her little comic moments with Noel. Plus she has a cat she walks on a leash so points for that. And her bakes were good. I also like Rowan whose ambitions so far don’t match the outcomes but he still carries on.

Just discussing the episode with my sister. I really felt bad for Sura knocking those cakes over. However, it is ironic that they really were upside-down cakes in a very literal sense!

I'm re-watching the previous season and, barring the young age of bakers, am finding it to be quit delightful. Lots of humor from everyone and challenging bakes.

Really side-eying the decision over who went home this week. Let's see, you have someone who has so far refused to listen to the judges and constantly under delivers on their projects vs someone who is really trying who just had an off week and they send the latter home? Ugh.
Also, love Noel's sweater this week and I'm going to hunt it down.

Ugh. Also, love Noel's sweater this week and I'm going to hunt it down. I agree. It was REALLY close as to who should have gone home this week. I love Noel, but thought his sweater looked like something a younger family member "made" from things purchased at the Goodwill, then painted the happy face on it. As much as it's not my cuppa tea, I will concede that Noel's got a unique style!!!!

Since it was so close I wonder if what tipped the scales was that the one who went through followed the brief a little better - because they had a molded bisquit and the other didn't?

I was a little surprised but not shocked at who left. Rowan is a little bit silly and will be gone soon enough, but he's failing to execute some very creative ideas. This week Mak didn't make real Florentines in the signature bake, and his admitting that he had to simplify his vision for the showstopper probably set off a red flag with Paul, especially since it still didn't come out well.

Honestly, these sweater designers should pay Noel for advertising. $800+ sweater--and completely sold out thanks to the show.

It was Rowan's imagination vs. Mak's staidness. With Mak I felt his eyes bored into one to be kinda scary; with Rowan I enjoyed the laugh he had at himself, though I hope he does rein it in as he promised. In the end, Mak was shown to be a lovely guy and Rowan flippery.
I really thought the one who put together a haggis would win as Prue could hardly get the word delicious out...or was that a fake out.
Finding Matt's silliness more laugh out loud and Noel's style is beginning to make its way in...remember Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz outfit...I mean who doesn't like gingham?
Another fun outing which is just what I needed in between every real world drumbeat today.

I don’t know if anyone watches An Extra Slice, the companion show to Bake-off. I don’t believe it is on Netflix but you can find it online. Anyhow, they showed a short video of them practicing in this week’s show. The set-up was up exactly like the tent (the baking stations (counters and ovens) looked the same) but they had more “stuff” around each bench - boxes, storage totes etc - and there were floor to ceiling curtains pulled around each work area so the bakers could have privacy.

BREAD WEEK!I have to admit that I laughed when Matt said "Is it really important for bread to taste good?" and got a filthy look from Paul lol. Now that it's the third week we've gotten to know the bakers better and I'm really enjoying Hermoine with her infectious laugh, Sura and her attention to detail, Lottie and her Vikingism, and Linda's cheerfulness. I especially liked Linda's sweet-looking cow on her showstopper. I'm glad that Hermoine's experiment in the first round paid off and it turned out beautifully in both taste and looks. I was very happy for Star Baker this week because it was well-deserved. The person leaving had been circling the drain for a while but they took it in good spirits, and at least their showstopper was beautiful even though it didn't taste great.
edit: Apparently some of the bakers have family members quarantining with them on site which is really nice; especially for those who have children.
